Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method for dynamic three-dimensional (3-D) shape measurement based on Fourier transform profilometry. A sequence of dynamic deformed fringe images can be grabbed by a CCD camera and saved on a disk rapidly. By a Fourier transform, filtering and inverse Fourier transform, a sequence of phase-maps can be obtained. By unwrapping these phase maps in 3-D phase space, we can obtain the shape of the dynamic object at different times. In this paper we also propose the algorithm of a phase difference between two deformed fringes, and the 3-D phase unwrapping method based on the phase difference algorithm. The computer simulation and experiment results show that this method can efficiently deal with the dynamic 3-D shape measurement.

Abstract:Summary Fourier transform method has been widely sued on fringe analysis in optical metrology, including the structured illumination metrology and the interference metrology. The Fourier transform profilometry is one of the popular non-contact 3-D shape measurement methods, where a Ronchi grating or sinusoidal grating is projected onto a 3-D diffuse surface, and the resulting deformed grating image is detected by a CCD camera and processed by a computer. This method requires only one frame of the deformed fringe pattern to retrieve the surface of measured object, so it has obvious advantage for real-time data acquisition and 3-D measurement of dynamic process. In this paper, we review some dynamic 3-D shape measurement methods mainly proposed in our Lab based on Fourier fringe analysis, discuss some important problems, including sampling and frequency spectra overlapping, phase calculation, phase unwrapping, and 3-D reconstruction of dynamic process. When the measured dynamic object is spatially isolated or breaking into several isolated parts (e. g. an impact process), it will bring some difficulties for phase unwrapping. We embedded a special mark into the projected sinusoidal gratings to identify the fringe order, and at the same time the mark will not affect the Fourier spectra of the deformed fringe. In this paper we discuss some applications in the different fields. The applications include 3-D shape and deformation measurement of rotating object, the measurement for the vibrated shape, dynamic measurement of vortex shape, the 3-D shape measurement for breaking object surface and so on. With the development of computer hardware and software and availability of high frame rate CCD camera, the dynamic 3-D shape measurement using Fourier method will be a promising one for acquiring 3-D data of dynamic object.

Abstract:Fourier Transform Profilometry (FTP) has been applied to three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement for decades and then been also used to dynamic 3D measurement for a couple of years. For dynamic process, a sequence deformed fringe patterns, which involved the 3D data of a shape-changing surface, were recorded by high speed CCD cameras. To figure out the surfaces about the dynamic objects, the patterns form this sequence is calculated with 2D Fourier Fringe Analysis (FFA) frame by frame during the years. As been collected sequentially in a relatively short time, those dynamic deformed fringe patterns have certain similarities and closed connections with each other. It will be a benefit for 3D phase calculation, so this sequence deformed fringe patterns can be fully taken into account rather than be spoiled in that frame by frame 2D FFA processing. In this paper, the entire set of fringes is treated as a whole by 3D FFA. As 4D information, the 3D Fourier frequency components have their own peculiarities along the spatial dimension and the temporal dimension. Lots of information, like how fast the surface changes, and how wide scope the surface mostly swings, will influence the 3D Fourier frequency components distribution. In order to save all those useful information from the dynamic surface models during the Fourier transform, a cylinder filtering window is applied to extract what we are interested in two dynamic models. After the 3D fringe analysis, the creditable phase information will be drawn out for the following shape reconstruction within a shorter time. And the difficulties of this reconstruction process will be reduced by 3D fringe analysis. All of those advantages have been proved by the computer simulation and the actual experiment.
Improve Temporal Fourier Transform Profilometry for Complex Dynamic Three-Dimensional Shape Measurement.

Abstract:The high-speed three-dimensional (3-D) shape measurement technique has become more and more popular recently, because of the strong demand for dynamic scene measurement. The single-shot nature of Fourier Transform Profilometry (FTP) makes it highly suitable for the 3-D shape measurement of dynamic scenes. However, due to the band-pass filter, FTP method has limitations for measuring objects with sharp edges, abrupt change or non-uniform reflectivity. In this paper, an improved Temporal Fourier Transform Profilometry (TFTP) algorithm combined with the 3-D phase unwrapping algorithm based on a reference plane is presented, and the measurement of one deformed fringe pattern producing a new 3-D shape of an isolated abrupt objects has been achieved. Improved TFTP method avoids band-pass filter in spatial domain and unwraps 3-D phase distribution along the temporal axis based on the reference plane. The high-frequency information of the measured object can be well preserved, and each pixel is processed separately. Experiments verify that our method can be well applied to a dynamic 3-D shape measurement with isolated, sharp edges or abrupt change. A high-speed and low-cost structured light pattern sequence projection has also been presented, it is capable of projection frequencies in the kHz level. Using the proposed 3-D shape measurement algorithm with the self-made mechanical projector, we demonstrated dynamic 3-D reconstruction with a rate of 297 Hz, which is mainly limited by the speed of the camera.

Abstract:In recent years, the fringe projection profilometry (FPP) technique has shown great prospects in the field of dynamic 3D measurement of microscopic surface shape. However, under dynamic conditions, it is desirable to use fewer projected patterns to minimize the sensitivity to motion. The commonly used phase-shifting method needs at least three fringe patterns to retrieve the wrapped phase, which depends heavily on the high-speed hardware to alleviate the effect of motion. Besides, to achieve an unambiguous measurement, at least two wrapped phase maps are required to obtain the absolute phase map, resulting in six pattern projections. In this paper, we propose the marker-embedded Fourier transform profilometry (MEFTP), which extends the modified Fourier transform profilometry with two embedded markers suited to assist the phase-unwrapping process. Combining the embedded markers with temporal phase difference information, the absolute phase can be reliably reconstructed with only two projected patterns. Furthermore, since the phase information is only encoded within a single high-frequency fringe, MEFTP is more suitable for measuring fast-moving or surface-changing objects compared with the phase-shifting method. Experiments on both static and dynamic scenes are performed, verifying that our method can achieve an accurate and robust measurement of a vibrating diaphragm at the speed of 200 frames per second.
Fast 3D Shape Measurement of Complex Objects Combining S-transform Profilometry and Sub-Pixel Refinement

Abstract:Abstract In the fast 3D shape measurement of complex objects, the process of phase unwrapping affects the measurement accuracy and measurement speed. To omit phase unwrapping, a fast 3D shape measurement method is proposed based on S-transform profilometry and sub-pixel refinement. In this work, Deformed fringe pattern is analyzed based on S-transform to get wrapped phase. To reduce the effect of phase unwrapping, a stereo vision system is employed. Firstly, a deformed fringe pattern is directly used and a hybrid function is proposed to get an initial parallax. Secondly, a phase slope algorithm is proposed to confirm edge point. At last, sub-pixel parallax is refined fromIcoordinate. Experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility and advantage of the proposed method. Results verify that the proposed method can provide fast and accurate 3D shape measurement of complex objects, especially for discontinuous objects and shiny objects.

Abstract:In the dynamic 3D shape measurement phase distribution has 3D character, in which phase changes along x and y directions in space and also along t direction in time. 3D phase unwrapping plays a very important role in the dynamic 3D shape measurement. In the dynamic 3D shape measurement methods based on the structured illumination, Fourier transformation profilometry (FTP) is particularly fit for dynamic 3D measurement, because of only one fringe pattern needed and full field analysis. In this paper some 3D phase unwrapping techniques for dynamic 3D shape measurement mainly in our Lab. are presented and reviewed. The basic methods and algorithm design are introduced. The basic methods include direct 3D phase unwrapping, 3D diamond phase unwrapping, 3D phase unwrapping based on reliability ordering, 3D phase unwrapping based on marked fringe tracing. The advantage of the phase unwrapping based on reliability ordering is that the path of phase unwrapping is always along the direction from the pixel with higher reliability parameter value to the pixel with low reliability parameter value. Therefore, in the worse case the error is limited, if there is any, to local minimum areas.

Abstract:In this paper a novel 3D shape measurement technique based on color fringe projection is proposed to solve the spectrum aliasing and phase unwrapping issues existed in Fourier transform profilometry. Set the RG components of the color fringe to two different frequencies of sinusoidal pattern and the B component to the average value of R or G component. Then project the pattern to the object. Separate these RGB components of the captured color pattern and use our method to process these three gray patterns. By using the proposed method, the background and high frequency noises can be eliminated during FTP process, also the accurate unwrapped phase which contains the height information can be got by using two frequencies of wrapped phase to unwrap the phase. Only one frame color pattern is needed to get the 3D information of an object. Experiment results show that the 3D information of an object can be obtained rapidly and accurately using the proposed method. And also the object can be measured dynamically.

Abstract:Fourier-transform profilometry (FTP) and phase-shifting profilometry (PSP) are two mainstream fringe projection techniques widely used for three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement. The former is well known for its single-shot nature and the latter for its higher measurement resolution and precision. However, when it comes to measuring the dynamic objects, neither approach is able to produce high-resolution, high-accuracy measurement results that are free from any depth ambiguities and motion-related artifacts. Furthermore, for scenes consisting of both static and dynamic objects, a trade-off between measurement precision and efficiency has to be made, suggesting that using a single approach can yield only suboptimal results. To this end, we propose a novel hybrid Fourier-transform phase-shifting profilometry method to integrate the advantages of both approaches. The motion vulnerability of multi-shot PSP can be overcome, or at least significantly alleviated, through the combination of single-shot FTP, while the high accuracy of PSP can also be preserved when the object is motionless. We design a phase-based, pixel-wise motion detection strategy that can accurately outline the moving object regions from their motionless counterparts. The final measurement result is obtained by fusing the determined regions where the PSP or FTP is applied correspondingly. To validate the proposed hybrid approach, we develop a real-time 3D shape measurement system for measuring multiple isolated moving objects. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves significantly higher precision and better robustness compared with conventional approaches where PSP or FTP is applied separately.

Abstract:Phase-unwrapping is one of the most important and difficult steps to retrieve object correctly in optical measurement based on structure light projecting.In this paper,we analyze three dimension unwrapping phase algorithms based on Fourier transform profilometry for measuring dynamic object,including direct phase unwrapping algorithm,phase unwrapping algorithm based on the phase difference and phase unwrapping algorithm based on modulation ordering.Especially,the phase unwrapping algorithm based on modulation ordering is good for phase unwrapping in isolated area existed in deformed fringe pattern.

Abstract:A method of three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement and visualization of object during impact based on Fourier transform profilometry (FTP) is proposed and verified by experiment. A sequence of dynamic deformed fringe images on the surface of object is grabbed by high speed CCD camera and saved on disk rapidly. Than processed them by Fourier transform, filtering, inverse Fourier transform and unwrapped these phase maps in 3D phase space, the shape deformation of object during impact can be recovered. This method is suitable for wide use in studying such high-speed motion as explosion, expansion, contraction and even shock wave. Based on the phase difference between two neighborhood frames, we propound a 3D phase unwrapping algorithm, which will be of great benefit to 3D phase unwrapping in speed and accuracy. The results of our experiment indicate that the method, presented in this paper, can efficiently deal with the surface shape measurement for rapid motion object and will be a promising one with the development of high-speed frame grabber.

Abstract:Digital fringe projection (DFP) method has been widely used in three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement. Lots of studies have been conducted to enhance the measurement accuracy and speed by modulating the patterns. However, it is still hard to acquire enough number of 3D results to ensure the continuity of dynamic 3D shape measurement when phase shifting profilometry and temporal phase unwrapping algorithm is adopted. Besides, object motion can introduce phase error and thus measurement error for phase shifting profilometry. To this end, a dynamic 3D reconstruction framework based on modified three-wavelength phase unwrapping algorithm and phase error compensation method is proposed to solve this problem. By redefining the order of fringe patterns projected by the digital light processing (DLP) projector, the number of required patterns for 3D reconstruction can be reduced and the speed of dynamic 3D shape measurement can be improved. And using phase error compensation method based on Hilbert transform, the accuracy of 3D reconstruction can also be improved. Experiments were carried out to demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed framework. And the modified algorithm successfully improved the speed of dynamic 3D shape measurement by 1/3.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach to fringe pattern profilometry. In this paper, a generalized model describing the relationship between the projected fringe pattern and the deformed fringe pattern is derived, in which the projected fringe pattern can be arbitrary rather than being limited to being sinusoidal, as are those for the conventional approaches. Based on this model, what is believed to be a new approach is proposed to reconstruct the three-dimensional object surface by estimating the shift between the projected and deformed fringe patterns. Additionally, theoretical analysis, computer simulation, and experimental results are presented, which show how the proposed approach can significantly improve the measurement accuracy, especially when the fringe patterns are distorted by unknown factors.
A Novel High-Speed 3d Profilometry for Complex Surface Measuring

Abstract:Phase unwrapping is an important process in Fourier Transform Profilometry (FTP). Algorithm based on twice different precision measurements is one of the efficient solutions. But it requires at least two wrapped phase maps, which make impossible to apply in dynamic and real time 3D measurement. To overcome the obstacle, we present a novel method, in which FTP and colour fringe projections are combined to acquire two wrapped phase maps by a single snapshot of object. Thus algorithm based on twice different precision measurements can be accomplished with one exposure and dynamic 3D contouring can be implemented.

Abstract:The circular sinusoidal fringe has a constant phase (encoded as zero phase) at the circular center, and its center can be used as a reference point for phase unwrapping to obtain absolute phase for calculating the height information of the measured object. As the carrier phase of the circular fringe is a non-linear function, the existing Fourier transform method based on circular fringe projection needs to solve a quadratic equation, judge roots, and fit to obtain the pixel displacement corresponding to height information of object surface. The robustness of the algorithm is not good in fact. In this paper, an improved circular fringe projection profilometry based on Fourier transform is proposed and investigated. By projecting another fringe with horizontal movement, the calculation of pixel displacement in circular fringe profilometry is simplified, and the calculation of pixel displacement is changed from solving a first- order equation to solving a quadratic equation. The robustness and surface reconstruction accuracy of circular fringe profilometry based on Fourier transform are improved. Computer simulation and experiments validate the effectiveness of proposed method in 3D measurement, which is especially suitable for out-of-plane measurement of the whole plane.

Abstract:The phase unwrapping is a significant and difficult procedure for profilometry based on fringe. A new algorithm based on coded phase is proposed in this paper. It identifies the order of the fringe by projecting fringes with coded phase onto the object and performs fast phase unwrapping. The computer simulation and the experiment are presented to prove the feasibility and validity of the new algorithm.

Abstract:An efficient approach for three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement is proposed. Phase distribution is obtained directly by filtering deformed fringe pattern with complex coefficient finite impulse response (FIR) band-pass filter. Firstly, a FIR low-pass filter is designed; its bandwidth is half of that of the deformed fringe pattern. Secondly, the complex coefficient FIR band-pass filter is gained by moving the frequency spectrum of low-pass filter to the position where the frequency spectrum of deformed fringe pattern located. Finally, the phase distribution is obtained by filtering the deformed fringe pattern with designed filter and calculating the argument of the filtered pattern. The experimental results reveal that a high resolution 3D image with texture can be obtained. Compared with conventional Fourier transform profilometry (FTP), the standard deviation of phase difference between these two methods reaches only 0.75%. As a result, this approach provides a new way to obtain phase distribution of deformed fringe pattern in spatial domain instead spatial frequency domain.
