Abstract:Motivated by applications in DNA storage, we study a setting in which strings are affected by tandem-duplication errors. In particular, we look at two settings: disjoint tandem-duplication errors, and equal-length tandem-duplication errors. We construct codes, with positive asymptotic rate, for the two settings, as well as for their combination. Our constructions are duplication-free codes, comprising codewords that do not contain tandem duplications of specific lengths. Additionally, our codes generalize previous constructions, containing them as special cases.

Abstract:Solid codes can be used in information transmission over a noisy channel because they have remarkable synchronization and error-detecting capabilities in the presence of noise. In this paper, we focus on combinatoric properties of solid codes. We begin by characterizing solid codes by means of infix codes and unbordered words. Then, we discuss the decomposition of solid codes (in particular, the maximal solid codes). And finally, we investigate several properties of the products of the solid codes and some other kinds of codes. Our results given in this paper significantly enrich the theory of solid codes.

Abstract:Data storage in DNA is developing as a possible solution for archival digital data. Recently, to further increase the potential capacity of DNA-based data storage systems, the combinatorial composite DNA synthesis method was suggested. This approach extends the DNA alphabet by harnessing short DNA fragment reagents, known as shortmers. The shortmers are building blocks of the alphabet symbols, consisting of a fixed number of shortmers. Thus, when information is read, it is possible that one of the shortmers that forms part of the composition of a symbol is missing and therefore the symbol cannot be determined. In this paper, we model this type of error as a type of asymmetric error and propose code constructions that can correct such errors in this setup. We also provide a lower bound on the redundancy of such error-correcting codes and give an explicit encoder and decoder pair for our construction. Our suggested error model is also supported by an analysis of data from actual experiments that produced DNA according to the combinatorial scheme. Lastly, we also provide a statistical evaluation of the probability of observing such error events, as a function of read depth.

Abstract:In wireless networks with distributed computing, the computational performance is limited by stragglers. To mitigate the stragglers’ effect, coded computation is adopted through computational redundancy. Moreover, in wireless transmission, transmission errors may occur due to noise, channel fading and so on. Existing works design coded computation and error detection separately. However, this leads to frequent encoding and inefficient allocation. In this paper, we propose a joint computation and transmission coding (JCTC) scheme to design coded computation and error detection jointly. The coded computation is based on Luby transform (LT) code and linear error-detecting codes are applied for the re-transmission mechanism. To achieve the low dynamic encoding, two-layer encoding is adopted. Then, the performances of JCTC scheme are analyzed in terms of latency and computation reliability. Finally, in order to achieve efficient task and redundancy allocation, the wireless LT coded computation with error detection (WLTCC-ED) algorithm is given from both iterative and low-complexity perspectives respectively. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, it shows that our proposed JCTC scheme has significant advantages over separate designs.

Abstract:In this correspondence, we study the probability of undetected error for binary constant-weight codes. First, we derive a new formula on the probability of undetected error for binary constant-weight codes. Second, using this new formula and linear programming, we give two new lower bounds on the probability of undetected error for binary constant-weight codes. These two new lower bounds improve on previously known lower bounds in certain cases. Furthermore, we show that these two lower bounds are tight if and only if the binary constant-weight codes are generated from certain$t$-designs in combinatorial design theory. This means that these binary constant-weight codes generated from certain$t$-designs are uniformly optimal for error detection. Along the way, we determine the distance distributions of such binary constant-weight codes. Finally, several examples are given to illustrate the results obtained in this correspondence.

Abstract:In this correspondence, we study the probability of undetected error for binary constant weight codes. Finally, we study the exponent of the probability of undetected error for binary constant weight codes. We derive some bounds on the exponent of the probability of undetected error for binary constant weight codes. These bounds enable us to extend the region in which the exponent of the probability of undetected error is exactly determined
Efficient Arithmetic Code Error Detection Algorithm with Multiple Forbidden Symbols

Abstract:Arithmetic codes are powerful entropy coding tools, but they are very vulnerable to transmission errors. Analysis of the error propagation characteristics of a definite precision arithmetic coder was used to develop an arithmetic code error detection algorithm with multiple forbidden symbols. Three different assignment schemes for the forbidden symbol probability intervals were studied to identify the best method. The best method achieves greater error detection capability with the same redundancy in terms of bit and symbol error detection distance. The number of errors detected immediately after the error occurring is about twice that of the single forbidden symbol method. The algorithm is an automatic repeat request (ARQ) based error detection method that reduces possible branches in arithmetic code probability decoding algorithms.

Abstract:Rate-compatible error-correcting codes (ECCs), which consist of a set of extended codes, are of practical interest in both wireless communications and data storage. In this work, we first study the lower bounds for rate-compatible ECCs, thus proving the existence of good rate-compatible codes. Then, we propose a general framework for constructing rate-compatible ECCs based on cosets and syndromes of a set of nested linear codes. We evaluate our construction from two points of view. From a combinatorial perspective, we show that we can construct rate-compatible codes with increasing minimum distances. From a probabilistic point of view, we prove that we are able to construct capacity-achieving rate-compatible codes.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we propose a new class of error-detecting codes based on quasigroups using automorphisms of the finite field [math] and the additive group [math]. We demonstrate that these codes are effective in detecting burst errors caused by hardware damage or noisy transmission. We also explore the codes ability to detect various types of double errors, including transposition errors, twin errors, and phonetic errors. Our analysis extends beyond bit-level errors to include block-level errors. Finally, we provide a comparative analysis and demonstrate the real-world applications of our code.

Abstract:Function-correcting codes are a class of codes designed to protect the function evaluation of a message against errors whose key advantage is the reduced redundancy. In this paper, we extend function-correcting codes from binary symmetric channels to symbol-pair read channels. We introduce irregular-pair-distance codes and connect them with function-correcting symbol-pair codes. Using the connection, we derive general upper and lower bounds on the optimal redundancy of function-correcting symbol-pair codes. For ease of evaluation, we simplify these bounds and employ the simplified bounds to specific functions including pair-locally binary functions, pair weight functions and pair weight distribution functions.

Abstract:To combat errors effect occurring in arithmetic code streams, a forbidden symbol is added to the symbol set to accomplish error detection ability in the arithmetic codes. Specially, through splitting the subinterval occupied by the forbidden symbol into two parts, and placing each at one end of the encoding interval, the error detecting capability is improved without compression efficiency loss. Simulated tests show this algorithm may detect errors more quickly than previously proposed methods.
