Abstract:Based on the technique of matrix optics, the ray transfer matrices for divergent or convergent axicons are, to our knowledge, first defined in this note. They can be described by 3x3 augmented matrices.

Abstract:The axicon was regarded as a misaligned system at the condition of the cone angle5° and the 4×4 augmented matrix of the misaligned system has been gotten.Propagation properties of Gaussian beams through an axicon have been studied by using the misaligned diffraction integral.The expression and the region of the hollow and solid of the output beam also have been studied.The transformation condition of the beam from solid to hollow or from hollow to solid has beam realized through combining the axicon and the lens has been investigated.

Abstract:One kind of constant deviation prisms which can invariably transform the propagating direction of a ray or a beam is analyzed in this paper. Its transfer characteristics could be described by 2 x 2 matrix and its misaligned transfer characteristics could be described by 3 x 3 augmented matrix. Under the condition of manufacturing tolerance, its transfer matrices are also given. And it is shown that the constant deviation prism is a two-dimensional insensitive component.

Abstract:The focal performance of the micro-axicon and the Fresnel axicon (fraxicon) are investigated, for the first time, by the rigorous electromagnetic theory and boundary element method. The micro-axicon with different angle of apex and the fraxicon with various period and angle of apex are investigated. The dark segments of the fraxicon are explored numerically. Rigorous results of focal performance of the micro-axicon and the fraxicon are different from the results given by the approximation of geometrical optics and the scalar diffraction theory. The scattering effects are dominant in the fraxicon with small size of feature. It is expected that our study can provides very useful information in analyzing the axicon in optical trapping systems.

Abstract:Axicon lenses are versatile optical elements that can convert Gaussian beams to Bessel-like beams. In this letter, we demonstrate that axicons operating with high efficiencies and at large angles can be produced using high-contrast, multilayer gratings made from silicon. Efficient beam deflection of incident monochromatic light is enabled by higher-order optical modes in the silicon structure. Compared to diffractive devices made from low-contrast materials such as silicon dioxide, our multilayer devices have a relatively low spatial profile, reducing shadowing effects and enabling high efficiencies at large deflection angles. In addition, the feature sizes of these structures are relatively large, making the fabrication of near-infrared devices accessible with conventional optical lithography. Experimental lenses with deflection angles as large as 40° display field profiles that agree well with theory. Our concept can be used to design optical elements that produce higher-order Bessel-like beams, and the combination of high-contrast materials with multilayer architectures will more generally enable new classes of diffractive photonic structures.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a ray tracing method in 3-D space. This method, based on ABCD ray transfer matrices in 2-D spacey, is deduced to establish the matrix expression for ray tracing in 3-D space. In order to solve the attitude control problem of the plan mirror in image stabilization system, we construct a mathematical model to describe the ray passing process from incident plane, mirror reflection, to the next optical plane. Two 2*2 ABCD submatrixes, for two 2-D subspaces, have been used to describe the propagation rules of ray in a 3-D space. Furthermore, the stabilization formula has been deduced. In this way, the offset angle for stabilization and coordinate of ray in space can be got. With the simulation experiments, we verified the effectiveness and accuracy of this mathematical model. The method we put forward has the characteristics of universal and simple. This 3-D ray tracing method could be further applied to other optical area.

Abstract:Abstract Ray transforms for vector or tensor fields have been studied for a long time, also in connection with Doppler or polarization tomography. In contrast to the classical Radon transform or X-ray transform their known inversion formulae are rather complicated, and represented, for example, using series expansions or singular value decompositions. Recently, applications of the approximate inverse have been studied. In this paper we present a new class of inversion formulae for compactly supported fields similar to those of the X-ray transform. The derivation is based on two observations. First, we apply Derevtsov’s formula relating the ray transforms of vector or tensor fields to a derivative of the X-ray transform of a generating potential, [3]. Second, we apply the calculation of derivatives of a scalar function from its X-ray transform, as it is realized in feature reconstruction, [15, 16]. Generalizations complete the presentation.

Abstract:An analytical expression describing the vectorial field distribution of Gaussian light beams diffracted by an axicon is obtained. The theoretical analysis and simulation calculation show that for the linearly x-polarized light incident on an axicon, the y-component of the diffraction field is very small and the x-component dominates. The intensity of the z-component along the propagation direction is related with the open angle and index of axicon. The open angle plays the more important role in determining the polarization than does the index. For a small open angle, the z-polarized effect can be neglected and the scalar method is simple and valid to evaluating the diffraction field distribution of axicon. However, the vectorial method has to be used for great open angle.

Abstract:It is shown that every ray transfer matrix, often called the ABCD matrix, can be written as a similarity transformation of one of the Wigner matrices that dictate the internal space-time symmetries of relativistic particles, while the transformation matrix is a rotation preceded by a squeeze. The implementation of this mathematical procedure is described, and how it facilitates the calculations for scattering processes in periodic systems is explained. Multilayer optics and resonators such as laser cavities are discussed in detail. For both cases, the one-cycle transfer matrix is written as a similarity transformation of one of the Wigner matrices, rendering the computation of the ABCD matrix for an arbitrary number of cycles tractable.

Abstract:Risley systems and tilting orthogonal double-prism systems are optical systems consisting of two prisms in series. The analysis of such systems typically involves both direct and inverse problems. Problems of the former type can be easily solved using ray-tracing equations. However, inverse problems are comparatively more difficult if the search direction is not properly given prior to iteration. In the present study, the two optical systems are modeled using the homogeneous coordinate notation. A method is then proposed for solving the direct and inverse problems of both optical systems using a ray-tracing approach and the first- and second-order derivative matrices of the skew rays. In addition, four optimization methods based on the two derivative matrices are proposed for determining the search direction in the inverse problem. Eight illustrative examples are given. It is shown that the proposed method can not only determine the scan patterns and sensitivity coefficients in the direct problem, but also determine the search direction in the inverse problem.

Abstract:This paper reports a simple, low cost method to fabricate millimetre-scale refractive axicons utilizing electrostatic force. The axicon consists of a SU8 droplet and a commercial biconcave lens. UV light is employed to cure the droplet when the droplet shape evolves into a cone shape due to nonuniform electrical pressure along the liquid⿿air interface. Both numerical analysis and experiments show that the proposed axicon images a point source to a continuous line and improves the uniformity of the axial intensity compared to linear axicons.

Abstract:This paper present an efficient matrix inverse algorithm of the recent iterative adaptive approach (IAA) in the application of real beam superresolution (RBS). Based on the inherently band structure of the covariance matrix, the computational complexity of inverse can be reduced by avoiding the computation of zero elements. To achieve this, the divide and conquer (D&C) method will be introduced to fast inverse the covariance matrix. Numerical simulations illustrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
