Abstract:An ABCD matrix for describing the hard aperture under the incidence of spherical Gaussian beam is defined in this note based on the focal shift concept. It is useful for analyzing focal shift or transformation of spherical Gaussian beam in complicated optical systems with hard apertures.

Abstract:By expanding the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, approximate analytical expressions of Wigner distribution function for fundamental mode Gaussian beam through an apertured and misaligned ABCD optical system are derived. Compared with the aligned case, results show that the misaligned optical system will introduce in the output Wigner distribution function a coordinate shift in space-frequency plane. To examine the analytical results, some numerical simulations are carried out and the absolute errors between analytical results and numerical integral ones are presented. It is shown that the approximate analytical results are proper and ascendant.

Abstract:The propagation behavior of the multi-Gaussian Schell-model source through ABCD optical systems and its spreading in the turbulent atmosphere are investigated. We obtain the analytic expressions for the cross spectral density and spectral degree of coherence of such beams in misaligned ABCD optical systems and beam width in atmospheric turbulence. Numerical results show that when the beam is focused, it still has the flattened intensity profile around the optical axis. However, the degree of coherence of field in the focal plane assumes Gaussian-like profile. The turbulence inner scale and correlation width and index M of the source have some effects on beam spreading through atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:When a Gaussian beam is apertured, it undergoes a phase shift as well as a focal shift. The relative phase shift of an apertured Gaussian beam through an axisymmetric optical system written in ABCD matrix is analyzed by applying Collins' diffraction integral formula. And, more important, the condition of dispeling the relative phase shift is obtained, which is related with the Fresnel number. At last, some extensions are given.

Abstract:By expanding the aperture into complex Gaussian functions, the approximate analytical impulse response function of apertured and misaligned ABCD optical system in phase-space is determined, which allows us to formulate the input–output relation completely in terms of Wigner distribution functions. Its shown that the hard-aperture placed before the optical system will change the shape of output signal Wigner distribution and the misalignment of optical system will introduce the output Wigner distribution function a coordinate shift in phase-space. For examining the analytical results some numerical simulation are done and the graphical results as well as the absolute errors between analytical results and numerical integral ones are presented.

Abstract:A deterministic beam-forming approach aiming at synthesising differently shaped beams for a partial, spherical-surfaced conformal aperture is presented. It is mathematically shown that current distribution on such an aperture can be expanded into a Fourier series, and its far-field radiation pattern can be further expressed in a concise closed form. If the aperture distribution satisfies a weighted zeroth-order or first-order spherical Bessel function, one can easily achieve various shaped beams such as pencil, flat-topped and bimodal beams by simply tuning a single weighting coefficient of the Bessel function. The proposed approach is deterministic and intuitive, making it possible to achieve fast, real-time beam-forming for spherical conformal arrays.

Abstract:By introducing a method that a hard-edged aperture function can be expanded into an approximate sum of complex Gaussian functions with finite numbers, the analytical expression of Wigner distribution function for a Gaussian beam passing through a cylindrical symmetric and paraxial ABCD optical system with a hard-edged aperture is obtained. Numerical calculations show that the effect of an aperture on the Wigner distribution function is prominent. The analytical results are also compared with the integral calculation results and they show that this method of expanding a hard aperture into Gaussian functions with finite numbers is proper and ascendant. This method could also be extended to studying the Wigner distribution functions of other light beams passing through a paraxial ABCD optical system with a hard-edged aperture.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an analytical beam-forming approach capable of synthesizing differently shaped beams for circularly symmetric conformal apertures with axisymmetrical excitations. Closed form formulas of far-field radiation are mathematically derived in order to obtain rotationally symmetric radiation patterns for typical conformal apertures frequently used in satellite and flight vehicle applications, such as the cone-surfaced, truncated cone-surfaced, hybrid disc-cone and sphere-cone apertures. Based on these formulas, various shaped beams, including pencil, flat-topped and bimodal beams can be rapidly achieved by adjusting either the geometric parameters or the excitation distributions of the conformal apertures. The deterministic approach proposed in this paper provides an efficient method to synthesize specified beam shapes for the aforementioned conformal apertures. Collaborating with conventional optimization based beam forming approaches, the proposed approach can effectively shorten the time-consuming optimization in the beam forming of circularly symmetric conformal arrays, especially large conformal arrays.

Abstract:Based on the fact that a hard aperture function can be expanded by an approximate sum of complex Gaussian functions with finite numbers, the approximate analytical expressions for the off-axial Hermite–cosh-Gaussian beams and off-axial cosh-Gaussian beams passing through an apertured paraxial ABCD optical system have been derived. By doing some numerical simulations the results obtained by the approximate analytical expression are compared with those obtained by the diffraction integral formula directly. It is shown that the former has good consistency with the latter and that our method can significantly improve the numerical calculation efficiency. The approximate analytical expressions for the kurtosis parameter and beam radius of an off-axial Hermite–cosh-Gaussian beam through an apertured paraxial ABCD optical system are also derived.

Abstract:Using the fact that a hard-edged rectangular aperture function can be approximated by a two-dimensional multi-Gaussian series, analytic formulas for the elements of the cross-spectral density matrix of a random electromagnetic beam truncated by a rectangular aperture and passing through an axially nonsymmetrical optical system is derived. The analysis is illustrated by numerical examples relating to changes in the spectral degree of polarization of electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beams propagating through free space, focal system and dual-focus system. In particular, the effect of the size of the hard aperture on the spectral degree of polarization of the beam along its optical axis is discussed.

Abstract:The propagation property of flattened Gaussian beams (FGBs) is studied based on the Collins formula, and analytical propagation equations for FGBs with and without an aperture are derived. It is shown that the closed-form expressions for the FGB of order N passing through paraxial ABCD optical systems without an aperture can be written as the combinations of Confluent Hyper-geometric Functions, and that the analytical equations for the FGB of order N passing through apertured paraxial ABCD optical systems may involve Error Functions. The proposed algorithms for the considered beams can save computing time, provide intuitive physical insights, and help to design optical systems. Our results are confirmed and illustrated with numerical examples.

Abstract:Beam profiles that consist of a sum of complex-Gaussian functions, a sum of polynomial-Gaussian functions and a sum of multi-Gaussian functions offset by some fixed amount are proposed as three types of model for a hard-aperture function. By expanding an aperture function into these models, approximate analytical propagation equations for a Gaussian beam through an apertured AB CD optical system are obtained. Comparison among these models themselves and among propagation characteristics of a Gaussian beam through these models are made. It is shown that the first and third types of model for a hard-aperture function are more suitable than the second type, in terms of calculation efficiency and simulation results, for application to such diffraction problems.
