Abstract:Based on the encircled-power criterion, the focal shift of off-axial Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beams passing through an apertured lens is studied and illustrated with detailed numerical examples. The dependence of focal shift on the beam and optical system parameters is discussed.

Abstract:Helico-conical beam is attractive for its phase front is nonseparable helical and conical phase function, which produces a spiral intensity distribution occurs at the focal plane. In this letter, the focal properties of cosh-Gaussian beam with helico-conical wavefront were investigated to show that helico-conical phase front does not always produce spiral intensity distribution. On increasing decentered parameters in cosh parts of the beams, the spiral focal pattern evolves into multiple intensity peaks with center main strongest peak. Under condition of higher decentered parameters, the focal spiral curve disappears. In addition, the topological charge also affects the focal pattern considerably.

Abstract:Focusing properties of Bessel-Gauss beam with radial varying polarization are investigated based on vector diffraction theory in this article. The polarization angle formed by polarization direction and radial coordinate is the function of the radial distance in pupil plane, and one polarization parameter indicates the speed of change of polarization angle. It was found that the intensity distribution in focal region can be altered considerably by the beam parameter and polarization parameter. For a small beam parameter, the focal spot broadens transversely, distorts into ring focus, and then evolves back into focal spot on increasing polarization parameter. When beam parameter gets higher, focal pattern becomes complicated and the focus evolution principle with increasing beam parameter also changes significantly. Some novel focal patterns may appear, including multiple intensity rings, dark hollow focus, cylindrical crust focus.

Abstract:Half-space amplitude modulation was introduced into the linearly polarized cosh-Gaussian beams with sine-azimuthal variation wavefront, and corresponding tunable focal patterns were investigated in detail. Simulation results show that focal pattern can be changed remarkably by the amplitude modulation. And under condition of different beam parameters and phase parameter that indicates the sine-azimuthal variation wavefront, the focal pattern evolution also differs considerably. Some novel focal shape may appear, including cross-shape, multiple-peak focal pattern, multiple intensity lines, wheel focal pattern, bell shape, and swallowtail focal spots. Symmetry of the whole focal pattern can be altered remarkably, the whole focal pattern evolves into uniaxial symmetry about perpendicular axes for odd and even phase parameter, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, the focal shift of hollow Gaussian beams (HGBs) passing through a thin lens is investigated in detail. An analytic expression of the location of the axial maximum intensity for the HGBs is derived. It is found that, both the relative focal shift and the relative location of the axial maximal intensity of the HGBs is strongly affected by the ratio α (where α=s/f, here s is the axial distance from the input plane to the lens plane and f is the focus length of the lens), and it is also greatly affected by the changes of both the effective Fresnel number Nw and the order n of HGBs.

Abstract:We study the nonparaxial propagation behavior of Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beams under the tight focusing condition by using the Rayleigh–Sommerfeld integrals. We obtain an analytical formula and show the focal shift with respect to the geometric focus of a high numerical-aperture objective. An analytical expression for the focal shift of a tightly focused LG beam increases with the focal length while decreases with the beam waist. This approach can be extended to deal with the tight focusing field and the focal shift of LG vector fields with space-variant polarization distributions or other focusing behaviors such as the 4π focusing and the Fresnel zone plates.

Abstract:On the basis of diffraction integral and the expansion of the hard-aperture function into a finite series of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate expression for spatially fully coherent polychromatic hollow Gaussian beams passing through aperture lens is obtained. Detailed numerical results indicate that remarkable spectral changes always occurs near the points where the field amplitude has zero value. The effects of truncation parameter, Fresnel number and the beam order on spectral shifts and spectral switches are investigated numerically.

Abstract:It is shown that when a generalized astigmatic elliptical Gaussian beam (EGB) propagates in a focusing optical system with an elliptical aperture, the effect of focal shift and focal switch can appear. An analytical propagation expression for an EGB through an axially nonsymmetrical optical system with a thin lens and an elliptical aperture is derived. Some numerical simulations are illustrated for its focal shift and focal switch, and some physical explanations are also given.

Abstract:The offset between the light beam focal plane and the geometrical optical focal plane was defined as the focal shift of converging spherical waves, and the analytical expression of the focal shifts was derived by using Fourier transforms and reverse Fourier transforms. Based on the theory of hydrodynamics model of optics (HMO), it is pointed out that the focal shifts are attributed to the intrinsic movements of the light beams, meanwhile, as the expression of the focal shifts is obtained under the approximation of paraxial condition, it is suitable only for paraxial light beam.

Abstract:We theoretically investigated on the focal shift of flat-topped beams (FTBs) passing through a lens system with or without aperture. We find that the position of on-axis peak intensity of focused FTBs strongly depends on the Fresnel number, the flatness order of FTBs, the truncation of the aperture, as well as the relative incident distance. The results indicate that the focal shift away from the geometrical focus of the focused FTBs appears when the relative incident distance does not equal to 1 and increases with the decreasing of the Fresnel number or the beam flatness order for both the apertured and unapertured lens systems. In the lens system with aperture, the focal shift effect decreases with the increase of the truncation parameter.

Abstract:The focusing properties of azimuthally polarized hyperbolic-cosine-Gaussian (ChG) beam are investigated theoretically by vector diffraction theory. Results show that the intensity distribution in focal region of azimuthally polarized ChG beam can be altered considerably by decentered parameters, and some novel focal patterns may occur for certain case. On increasing decentered parameters, ring shape of focal pattern can evolve into four-peak focal pattern, and azimuthal field component affects focal pattern more significantly than radial field component. Optical gradient force is also calculated to show that the focusing properties may be used in optical tweezers technique.

Abstract:Spectral changes of a twisted electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model (EGSM) beam focused by a thin lens are investigated by using a tensor method. It is shown that the spectral shift is mainly determined by the degree of polarization, twist phase and correlation coefficients of the initial beam. Generically the blue shift occurs at on-axis points, while the red shift can occur at off-axis points.

Abstract:Abstract By introducing the hard-edge aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate analytical expression of the relative phase shift for an off-axial Gaussian beam passing through an apertured and misaligned paraxial ABCD optical system has been derived. It is shown that it is related with the off-axial beam parameters, the aperture size, the ABCD matrix elements and misaligned parameter. Some numerical simulations are also illustrated for its application. The obtained results could be extended to the two-dimensional case.

Abstract:To improve the abruptly autofocusing property of circular Airy beam, we propose a method to generate multiple circular Airy beams (MCAB) carrying lens phase factors using a spatial light modulator (SLM). The propagation dynamics of this kind of beam is theoretically simulated, as well as experimentally verified. It is shown that four identical beams are produced symmetrically and they can move toward the center simultaneously. By changing the lens phase information encoded in the SLM, we can achieve different focal positions and focal intensities as we want. With the same parameters, compared with a single circular Airy beam (SCAB), there are two focal planes and the abruptly autofocusing property can be greatly enhanced. It may have some applications in various fields.

Abstract:Based on the fact that a hard aperture function can be expanded by an approximate sum of complex Gaussian functions with finite numbers, the approximate analytical expressions for the off-axial Hermite–cosh-Gaussian beams and off-axial cosh-Gaussian beams passing through an apertured paraxial ABCD optical system have been derived. By doing some numerical simulations the results obtained by the approximate analytical expression are compared with those obtained by the diffraction integral formula directly. It is shown that the former has good consistency with the latter and that our method can significantly improve the numerical calculation efficiency. The approximate analytical expressions for the kurtosis parameter and beam radius of an off-axial Hermite–cosh-Gaussian beam through an apertured paraxial ABCD optical system are also derived.

Abstract:Based on the Collins formula in a cylindrical coordinate system and the method of introducing a hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate three-dimensional analytical formula for oblique and off-axis Gaussian beams propagating through a cat-eye optical lens is derived. Numerical results show that a reasonable choice of the obliquity factor would result in a better focus beam with a higher central intensity at the return place than that without obliquity, whereas the previous conclusion based on geometry optics is that the highest central intensity could be obtained when there is no obliquity.

Abstract:We investigated the propagation and autofocusing properties of three Airy-related beams, which are generated by three holograms with unique conjugation and symmetry. Beam patterns are simulated by using angular spectrum formalism and observed experimentally. The autofocusing behavior of black Airy beam is accompanied by formation of eight intensity peaks in the transversal plane. We find that the effect of non-ideal boundary condition is reflected in the diffraction fringes, and the affected ranges are different for different beams.
