Abstract:Stress analysis of flat steel ribbon wound pressure vessels (FSRWPVs) is very difficult because they have a special discrete structure and complex pretensions exit in the flat steel ribbons, which are wound around the inner shell layer by layer. An analytical multilayered model for stress analysis is presented in this paper, which involves the effect of prestress in every flat steel ribbon layer as well as in the inner shell. Based on this model, an optimal design method for FSRWPV is suggested, which can assure a reasonable stress level and distribution along the wall thickness during the operation. A practical example of a large FSRWPV is finally given for illustration.
Stresses Controllable Analysis and Optimal Design of Unique High Pressure Vessel Applied in Hydrogen Charge Station

Abstract:High pressure hydrogen storage vessels are the key equipment in hydrogen charge stations. Hydrogen environment embrittlement (HEE) is always the associated problem that is inescapable and difficult to be solved completely. In order to decrease the harmfulness of HEE, a unique flat steel ribbon wound pressure vessel (FSRWPV) is designed, whose inner shell material is austenitic stainless steels 0Cr18Ni9 (304) and the steel ribbon material is 16MnR (SA516Gr70). The residual stresses in FSRWPV are analyzed and a stress controlling model is put forward. Through this model, the stress distribution in the FSRWPV wall can be controlled by adjusting the pretension in flat steel ribbons. After optimal designing, the stresses in flat steel ribbon layers are uniform, and that in the inner shell is low or negative. This kind of stress distribution can effectively prevent HEE and stress corrosion cracking (SCC), therefore the FSRWPV has good properties of bearing HEE and SCC. Furthermore, as flat steel ribbon layers are a discrete structure, the online monitoring of FSRWPVs can be conveniently realized, so they have performance of “leak only no bursting”. At the end, an applied example of high pressure hydrogen FSRWPV is given.

Abstract:Flat Steel Ribbon Wound Pressure Vessels (FSRWPVs) are used in many important industry areas. There is no such kind of pressure vessel exploding on operation for its reasonable structure design. Many explosion experiments on Flat Steel Ribbon Wound Pressure Vessel showed that their limited load pressure is related to the winding angle of the steel ribbons. FSRWPVs with reasonable winding angle have better security and lower cost. Reasonable angels given at the end of this paper facilitate engineering design.

Abstract:This paper presents a mechanical analysis method of carbon fiber wound aluminum lined high pressure hydrogen storage vessel. Based on simplifying the carbon fiber wound layer on the cylinder, two submodels are created. The stress formulas of carbon fiber wound layer on the cylinder are obtained by the submodels and the basic principle of elastic mechanics. In manufacturing process, the tensile force of fiber will be controlled in order to get prestresses in the aluminum liner. The prestress can lower the stress of aluminum liner under operating pressure and reduce the probability of stress corrosion accordingly. It can also improve the fatigue life.

Abstract:The reasonably prestressing of carbon fiber wound on composite material vessel, which have great influence on vessel's capability, can improve the integrated performance of composite material vessel. When a carbon fiber wound high-pressure hydrogen storage vessel with aluminum alloy liner works under high pressure (eg 70 MPa), the stresses may exceed aluminum alloy's allowable stresses if not taking into account of the prestressing of carbon fiber. However, it can lower stresses of aluminum liner when carbon fibers are wound in some prestressing. In order to simplify the computation, this paper takes the whole cylinder as an isotropic body through simplifying the carbon fiber wound layer and supposing the liner as the carbon fiber. By optimizing the distribution of prestressing for every carbon fiber wound layer, an optimal wound prestressing distribution are obtained at last, which makes the stresses of aluminum liner lower, while the stresses of carbon fiber close to uniformity.

Abstract:The carbon fiber resin composite (CFRC) wound high-pressure vessel is the key equipment of high-pressure hydrogen storage technology. High pressure includes high energy in operation, so it is important to analyze the mechanics of this type of vessel. The constitutive performance of CFRC wound layer is anisotropic, and the layer arrangement is complexity, so it is difficult for mechanics analysis on a cylinder. Considering that the internal pressure in a cylinder is loaded by the aluminum alloy liner and the CFRC wound layers together, two models are built: The first model is the cylinder loaded by internal pressure in the hoop direction only. In this model, total hoop direction load is distributed into every layer under internal pressure. The second model is the cylinder loaded with the internal pressure on axial direction only. In this model, total axial load is distributed into all cylinders under internal pressure. Taking the boundary condition of continuous displacement between layers into account, a group of equations is built. From the equations, we can obtain the solutions of the internal pressures in hoop direction and axial direction loaded by every layer. After stresses are obtained, the optimal design can be done through this method. An example is given.

Abstract:Based on the design and manufacture of 70 MPa hydrogen environment fatigue test system,a 80 MPa flat steel ribbon wound pressure vessel for storing higher pressure hydrogen was researched.The low stresses of vessel inner shell and reasonable distribution of steel ribbon layers stress were achievde through adjusting prestress of the flat steel ribbon.Meanwhile,the control system of fatigue test system was designed with manual and automatic run methods to satisfy different needs.This system is the only one that can detect fatigue life under hydrogen environment,and it has been put into application.

Abstract:Basing on the theory of classical laminated plates and the theory of the grid,the model of filament wound metal-lined pressure vessels were simplified,and the orthotropic assumption was proposed,including the viewpoint that the material stays at linear elasticity and the fiber can withstand the stress;Having the coupling of tension stress and shear stress of enhancement layers in composite pressure vessel ignored to get stress distribution of the model with internal or external pressure.Fiber-preload control was put forward to optimize the stress distribution.The experimental model proves the rationality of both theoretical derivation and control method.

Abstract:Elastic buckling of stiffened steel plate walls (S-SPWs) under combined compression and shear was studied focusing on the stiffness demand on stiffeners to implement subpanel's buckling mode. Flat-bars and closed form stiffeners were considered. Threshold stiffness of stiffeners is presented for elastic buckling of subpanels of SSPWs in pure compression, pure shear and combined compression and shear. The effect of stiffeners' torsional stiffness has been included. Then the elastic-plastic (E-P) buckling of S-SPWs under combined compression and shear was studied. A criteria was established to identify the E-P shear buckling stress under a prescribed compression stress for SSPWs with given stiffness of stiffeners. Threshold stiffness of stiffeners was taken on the buckling stress - stiffness curve at the transition point as the E-P buckling shear stress reaches a plateau. The demand of keeping stiffeners straight when stiffeners are compressed simultaneously has been incorporated in such defined threshold stiffness. Equations for threshold stiffness of flat-bars and closed form stiffeners are proposed separately and comparisons with finite element results show good accuracy.

Abstract:The current design formula for the critical shear stress in JGJ99-98(Technical specification for steel structure of tall buildings) is applied mainly to the design of closely-stiffened plates.However,in practice,the steel shear walls are often stiffened with 1 or 2 longitudinal stiffeners.This paper presents a new study on the elastic buckling of the sparsely-stiffened plates under shear loading.More than 1,600 models are analyzed with the 3-D finite element method(FEM).The plates transversely stiffened with only 1 and 2 longitudinal stiffeners are analyzed.Formulas are presented,comparisons with the numerical results show that the accuracy is good and the formers are reasonably conservative.And the formulas can be applied to practical engineering.
New concepts on the interfacial friction behaviour between flat steel ribbon layers

Abstract:Flat steel ribbon wound pressure vessels are widely used in chemical, petrochemical, and other industries. However, no satisfactory theoretical formulae are available to estimate the additional strengthening induced by the friction between the layers. Effective normal stress in the ribbon wide direction and shear stress are new concepts for describing such strengthening effect. These concepts are analyzed further to obtain expressions for both axial and circumferential bursting pressure, and stresses of the vessel. Comparison with one set of experimental results shows excellent agreement.

Abstract:By investigating into the bursting pressure, steel ribbon winding angle, suitable inner core thickness and load carrying characteristics of the unique flat steel ribbon wound pressure vessels which have been extensively used in the People's Republic of China, the authors who have worked in this field for many years think that it is desirable to adopt the design criterion of bursting failure, to choose 100% for joint efficiency, 2.5 for bursting safety factor and 15 to 30 degrees for winding angle, and that the thickness of the inner core should not be less than 1/6 of the total wall thickness.

Abstract:Based on characteristics of the whole manufacturing process enclosed the winding, cure and autofrettage processes for the composite filament wound vessel with metal liner, a methodology for the prediction of the induced process stress field has been developed. Firstly, a finite element approach combining the temperature parametric method with real fictitious elements scheme was proposed for simulating the winding tension process; secondly, in accordance with the cure kinetic and heat transfer theory, a corresponding finite element method was employed to calculate the distributions of temperature, cure degree and thermal stress fields during the cure process. Finally, a nonlinear finite element method on the basis of the classical plastic theory was introduced to analyze the distribution of residual stress field in the filament winding layers and metal liner after the autofrettage process. Numerical examples for a typical high pressure vessel were given for illustrating it. The results show that the vessel loading capacity can be improved by selecting the appropriate process parameters.

The author has worked in this field for more than 10 years and describes the design philosophy of the flat ribbon wound layered pressure vessel through four parts: strength calculation, fatigue strength, engineering design, and nozzle reinforcements. A new joint construction between ribbon wound shell and hemispherical head thinner than shell and comments on the Code Case are also given.

Abstract:Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) have been widely employed in practical engineering projects. The steel plates inevitably endure axial loads due to the gravitational forces and structural settling. However, vertical pre-compressive loads have detrimental effects on the buckling behavior and shear resistance of the steel plates. Instead of strengthening the SPSWs to resist the vertical loads, a new type of vertically-flexible stiffened steel plate shear wall (VFS-SPSW) is proposed to minimize these adverse effects. The incorporation of hollow steel tube reduces the vertical compressive stiffness of the VFS-SPSW, leading to a decrease in the proportion of axial compressive loads transmitted to the steel plate wall from the boundary frame. Consequently, this feature facilitates the installation of VFS-SPSW without the necessity of awaiting the completion of the upper structure. In this paper, finite element (FE) analysis is conducted to obtain a threshold out-of-plane bending stiffness ratio for the stability of the VFS-SPSW. Subsequently, a formula for threshold out-of-plane bending stiffness ratio is proposed, including parameters of the ratio of torsional to bending stiffness and aspect ratio of the subpanel. Then, the anchoring mechanism of hollow steel tube to the tensile field of the steel plate is investigated. The threshold in-plane anchor stiffness ratio is defined to ensure the full development of the tension field in the steel plate. A formula for predicting this ratio is proposed by theoretical and numerical analysis. Finally, the reduction factor of vertical compressive stiffness for the VFS-SPSW at the threshold in-plane anchor stiffness ratio is calculated. The results indicate that the vertical compressive stiffness of the VFS-SPSW, which meets the threshold stiffness design requirements, can be decreased to below 50% of the traditional stiffened SPSW, while ensuring that the reduction in ultimate shear stress remains within the limit of 5%.

Abstract:Based on the finite element method and the design criterion,the complex stress distribution of some profiled pressure piping was analyzed.In order to verify the accuracy of the finite element calculation,the stress intensity of some special parts of this pressure piping under 0.43 MPa and 0.55 MPa pressure were studied by using the method of comparing strain test with finite element calculation.It’s found that the finite element calculation result was in accord with strain test result.The research results show that membrane stress and bending stress at the tip of ribbed plate of trigonum are the maximum when this profiled pressure piping is under 0.8 MPa pressure.But they are both in the allowable range of JB4732-1995 Steel Pressure Vessels-Design by Analysis,and have no influence on pipeline operation.

Abstract:The dynamic response of two-walled long pressure vessels with flat-wound ribbons subjected to an internal pressure with rectangular shape has been analyzed with the rigid-plastic model. The models of plastic deformation are given under middle and high loadings, respectively. The formulas of the limit pressure, response time and residual displacement of the vessels are proposed. Numerical results show that the static limit pressure of the vessel is less than that of monolithic vessel, the residual displacement of the vessel is more than that of the inner shell and monolithic ones, and the shock-resistance of the vessel is greater than that of monolithic vessel under loading pressure less than 24.5 MPa.
Study on CFRP-Strengthened Welded Steel Plates with Inclined Welds Considering Welding Residual Stress

Abstract:Welded steel plates are widely used in various structural applications, and the presence of inclined welds is often encountered in practical scenarios. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been proven to be effective for strengthening steel structures. However, the behavior of CFRP-strengthened welded steel plates with inclined welds, particularly considering the influence of welding residual stress, is limited. This paper aims to investigate the tensile behavior of CFRP-strengthened welded Q355 steel plates with inclined welds considering welding residual stress (WRS). First, WRS data were obtained by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method at different locations. The maximum tensile and compressive residual stresses are 0.39 and 0.14 times the yield strength of the steel, respectively. Then, finite element models were established to investigate the effects of weld angles, weld width, and height on the WRS distribution of welded steel plates. Finally, the tensile performance of CFRP-strengthened welded plates with WRS was studied by numerical simulation. The results showed that the weld angles have little effect on the distribution pattern of residual stress but significantly affect the peak tensile WRS. When the weld angle changes from 0° to 60°, the peak tensile WRS decreases significantly from 0.32 to 0.06 times the yield strength of steel; furthermore, the influence of weld width and height on WRS is relatively limited. Under tension loading, the maximum stress occurs near the weld. The ends of the weld enter the yielding state later than the middle part of the weld due to the distribution of the WRS. As the weld angle increases and the length of the weld increases, the stress in the weld zone decreases, while the stress in the base material zone correspondingly increases. In addition, CFRP strengthening can reduce the magnitude of stress. This study provides preliminary references for understanding the tensile behavior of CFRP-strengthened welded steel plates with inclined welds.

Abstract:Stress and damage analyses are performed on a composite pressure vessel with aluminum liner under internal pressure through numerical simulations. The variational thickness and wound angle of the head is reflected in the finite element model in accordance with the actual structure. A progressive damage model considering four failure modes are adopted for the composite, i.e., the fiber tension and compression, the matrix tension and compression. The regularities of the initiation and distribution of the various damages are studied, and the effects of the damage evolution on the determinations of the burst pressure and the autofrettage pressure are analyzed. The effects of the autofrettage pressure on the mean stress and the stress amplitude of the liner under zero and service pressures are also discussed. The conclusions in this paper are helpful to the design and use of composite pressure vessels.
