Abstract:In the related report by authors, suitable heating conditions are discus from the aspect of the temperature distributions. In this report, optimum heating conditions are discussed from the residual stress point of view using the thermal-visco-elastic-plastic finite element method. The whole history of the stress relaxation during the local PWHT can be clarified through the FEM analysis. Present investigations show that the transient and the residual stresses induced by the local PWHT are significantly affected by the creep behavior and the temperature dependence of Young's modulus. Stresses decrease quickly in the heating stage. They continue to decrease slowly according to the creep law in the holding stage and suddenly increase due to the recovery of Young's modulus when the cooling stage starts. The maximum residual stress after PWHT decreases with the increase of heated band width. When the heated band width is large enough, the residual stress after the local PWHT becomes almost the same as that for the uniform PWHT. Thus, the critical heated band width based on residual stress can be defined as the heated width which gives the residual stress close to that of the uniform PWHT. Through the comparison with the existing codes, it is found that the heated band width of 2.5 √Rt on either side the weld seems reasonable from the residual stress point of view. The Hi criterion based on the through thickness temperature gradient is also discussed in this study.
