Abstract:Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and battery energy storage (BES) have been increasingly employed in power systems for the reliable and economic operation of power transmission. However, the transient interaction between the electrical power of synchronous generator (SG) and the active power of STATCOM with/without BES is still misunderstood and treated incorrectly. This paper presents an analysis of this interaction and investigates the control and optimal placement of STATCOM with/without BES for the purpose of improving SG's damping, and thus enhancing system's oscillation damping performance. The results show that (1) the deviated electrical power of SG is not equal to the active power of STATCOM. Instead, it is related to STATCOM's current, placement and SG's electrical states, (2) with the increased damping as the index, the optimal location for STATCOM with BES is at the terminal of SG, while it is at the electrical mid-point of the transmission line for STATCOM without BES. Non-linear simulations and eigenvalue analysis are performed to validate the correctness of the above results.
A Hybrid Static Compensator for Dynamic Reactive Power Compensation and Harmonic Suppression

Abstract:This paper presents a combined system of a small-capacity inverter and multigroup delta-connected thyristor switched capacitors (TSCs). The system is referred to as a hybrid static compensator (HSC) and has the functions of dynamic reactive power compensation and harmonic suppression. In the proposed topology, the load reactive power is mainly compensated by the TSCs. Meanwhile the inverter is meant to cooperate with TSCs to achieve continuous reactive power compensation, and to filter the harmonics generated by nonlinear loads and the TSCs. First, the structure and mathematical model of the HSC are discussed Then the control method of the HSC is presented. An improved reduced order generalized integrator (ROGI)-based selective current control method is adopted in the inverter to achieve high-performance reactive and harmonic current compensation. Meanwhile, a switch control strategy is proposed to implement precise and fast switching of the TSCs and to avoid changing the time delay needed by the conventional switch strategy. Experiments are implemented on a 20 KVA HSC prototype and the obtained results verify the validity of the proposed HSC system.

Abstract:In traditional high-voltage direct current systems, alternating current system faults can lead to commutation failures, which may further induce the blocking of converters. After the faults are cleared, the fast recovery of commutating voltage, as one key factor to avoid converter blocks, is closely related to dynamic voltage support. The dynamic voltage behaviour considering the reactive power characteristic of converters is analysed, where the polynomial approximation is applied to facilitate our studies. Focusing on the synchronous compensator, the transient voltage support ability is analysed, and then the steady state output of synchronous compensators is regarded as a parameter to take parametric analysis. Case studies show that the steady state VAR output of synchronous compensators has influence on the countering of commutation failures, and an optimal allocation can be found by analysing the results in the form of polynomials.

Abstract:This paper presents theoretical analysis and experimental verification of voltage regulation stability problems of static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). The basic application of STATCOM is to supply fast voltage support to the power system. Therefore maximum response rate of the voltage regulation loop is always expected. However, through theoretical analysis, digital simulation and experimental investigation on a real STATCOM model, it is found that the voltage regulator of STATCOM may tend to be unstable under some circumstances. The factors influencing the stability margin of the STATCOM voltage regulation loop include the strength of the power system viewed from STATCOM, the inherent resonance of power network the operation point of STATCOM, the synchronizing method and the load. All these aspects are described in details in this paper. To enhance the stability of STATCOM voltage regulating loop, this paper applies the phase compensation method to achieve larger phase margin of the control loop. The stability of the current regulation loop of STATCOM is also studied in this paper.

Abstract:Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) has been proved to have a number of advantages over other techniques available at present in stabilizing power transmission systems. To improve the stability of the power transmission system of China's Henan province, the Henan Electric Power Company and Tsinghua University have jointly investigated and developed a 20 MVA STATCOM employing GTO inverters. The STATCOM consists of four six-pulse voltage source inverters (VSIs) unit rated 5 MVA which use 48 GTOs rated 4500 V, 4000 A. The STATCOM has been installed in a 220 kV substation and has been put into operation successfully since April 1999. The field tests have been carried out to verify the performance and the long-term reliability of the installation. The outline, technical features and field test results of the 20 MVA STATCOM are given in this paper

Abstract:This paper introduces application of 35 kV chain type hanging static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) in 220 kV substation in Zhejiang. A filed test is conducted on the device, including pre-charg-ing test, constant reactive power test, synthetic control of voltage and reactive power and transient voltage sag. The test result is in conformity with the requirement of performance index , and the test method can pro-vide relevant units with reference for STATCOM commissioning and acceptance tests.

Abstract:A Cascaded transformerless Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) of 35kV/8Mvar has been successfully developed and putted into application. The STATCOM is self-excited and in star configuration, each phase consists of twenty-one units, which employees 3.3kV IGBTs. With power supply by itself and the adjacent one, each unit can be bypassed and thus implement N-1 redundant running. By optimized Carrier Phase-Shift PWM method, the frequency of STATCOM can be dropped as low as 275Hz with the efficiency as high as 99%. Based on high speed distributed digital processors and instant current control method, the device has realized synthesized voltage and reactive power regulation and VQC/AVC coordination. The response time of STATCOM is below 10ms when voltage sag detected, thus strongly sustain the power system voltage. The experimental data and the field operation results both show that the performances of the developed transformerless 35kV/8Mvar STATCOM are satisfied, which provides a new solution for voltage and reactive power control for electric power substation.

Abstract:This paper describes a method for time-domain electromagnetic modeling for a±50 Mvar static compensator (STATCOM) using a 21-level cascaded converter.The real-time digital simulation algorithm based on the time average method is also presented.Based on digital signal processors (DSPs) and field programmable logic gates (FPGAs),a real-time digital simulator is designed and implemented for the±50 Mvar STATCOM system.By comparing with the simulation results from PSCAD/EMTDC,the real-time digital simulation results are verified.The designed real-time digital simulator has been used to test the actual controller when commissioning the±50 Mvar STATCOM in Shanghai Xijiao Substation.

Abstract:This study presents the research and application of multiple static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) in the China Southern Grid (CSG) to enhance the stability of its receiving-end power system. In this research, a practical methodology is developed for the optimal allocation of STATCOMs in a complex power system through both static and dynamic approaches. The allocation scheme for installing multiple STATCOMs in the CSG is determined using the proposed process. +/- 200 MVAr STATCOMs are developed based on cascaded H-bridge converters connected in the delta structure. A special system-level control strategy for fast voltage recovery applications is introduced in this study, and field test results and application effects are presented. Results of the real-time digital simulation are introduced to verify the application effects in the case where multiple STATCOMs are connected to the grid. Field test results and analysis of the recorded data for the system faults during actual operation also verify the application effects of multiple STATCOMs in the CSG.

Abstract:Despite the tremendous advantages of the static synchronous compensator using cascade multilevel inverters, its open-loop time constant for reactive power is too large to meet the required response speed. A ±50Mvar STATCOM using cascade multilevel inverters is projected to be installed at Xijiao substation in Shanghai city, and this paper focuses on the closed-loop dynamic var control for the cascade-inverters based STATCOM. A p-q (real and reactive power) decoupled model for the cascade-inverters based STATCOM is proposed. Then the multivariable nonlinear control method based on inverse-system is introduced. Consequently a pseudo linear p-q decoupled system is obtained and the fast and decoupled closed-loop control for reactive power is achieved. The experimental results on a laboratory prototype show that a fast response of reactive power within 10ms is achieved using the proposed dynamic control method.

Abstract:This paper discusses modeling,simulation and control strategy of a novel 10kV transformerless static synchronous compensator based on a 15-level modular multilevel converter(M-STATCOM).The new shunt compensator,with the characteristics like modular design,high front-end flexibility,low generation of harmonics,etc.,is well suitable for medium or high-voltage utility grid without line-frequency transformers.Its topology,principle of operation under static var generating condition and control system are described comprehensively.Besides,a new corresponding control scheme called phase opposition disposition(POD) is proposed for fast compensation of reactive power and harmonics and for making the three-phase source side currents balanced.The results obtained from various simulated waveforms in the MATLAB / SIMULINK environment validate that the MSTATCOM is capable of reactive power compensation,harmonic cancellation and simultaneous load balancing.

Abstract:The voltage control stability of STATCOM (static synchronous compensator) was analyzed. Maximum response rate of STATCOM is always expected to meet the power system performance requirements, but its control loop might become unstable under certain circumstances. The factors influencing the stability margin of the StATCOM voltage control loop were described, including the strength of the power system viewed from STATCOM, the inherent resonance of power network, the operation point of STATCOM, the phase lock loop and the load. Abstract:This paper discusses the integration of a static synchronous compensator (StatCom) with an energy storage system in damping power oscillations. The performance of the StatCom. a self-commutated solid-state voltage inverter, can be improved with the addition of energy storage. In this study, a 100 MJ SMES coil is connected to the voltage source inverter front-and of a StatCom via a dc-de chopper. The dynamics of real and reactive power responses of the integrated system to system oscillations are studied using an electromagnetic transient program PSCAD (TM) /EMTDC (TM) and the findings are presented. The results show that, depending on the location of the StatCom-SMES combination, simultaneous modulation of real and reactive power can significantly improve the performance of the combined compensator, The paper also discusses some of the control aspects in the integrated system.

Abstract:A direct power control strategy based on virtual flux linkage is proposed.Combining with space vector pulse modulation(SVPWM) the proposed control strategy can implement direct power control of three-phase static synchronous compensator(STATCOM).Based on current sampled values of voltage and current and computed values of active and reactive power,the voltage control value of STATCOM's output can be calculated to make the errors of active and reactive power becoming zero while the control process is completed.The influence of the degree of grid voltage unbalance on operation stability of STATCOM is researched in depth,thus the maximum degree of voltage unbalance that STATCOM can endure during its normal operation is determined.Having no need of transformation of rotational coordinates and PI control,the proposed control stratagem simplifies the design of controller.Both feasibility and availability of the proposed control strategy are verified by simulation results.

Abstract:The feasibility of circuit topology of controlled rectifier type of static var compensator (SVC) is theoretically analyzed, that is, the cutoff or over-current will not occur when the DC side of the controlled rectifier is short-circuited through an inductance while the trigger angle is close to 90°. The mechanism of reactive power compensation of controlled rectifier type of SVC, i.e., the reactive power absorbed by rectifier bridge is in direct proportion to the average current at DC side approximately, is analyzed. The controlled rectifier type of SVC and its control system are modeled and on this basis the basic requirements for the design of the controller are made. The circuit of controlled rectifier type of SVC is simulated and through prototype experiments the feasibility of this device is verified. The controlled rectifier type of SVC is not restricted by the value of reactance and its structure is compact, it makes the numbers of AC reactor as well as the active power loss reduced by a wide margin, therefore it is worthy to be further researched for the controlled rectifier type of SVC.

Abstract:The control strategy of MMC(Modularized Multilevel Converter)-based STATCOM(STATic synchronous COMpensator) is studied.The operating characteristics of MMC are analyzed and the equivalent mathematical model of STATCOM is derived.The exact feedback linearization is adopted to decouple the control of active power and reactive power and the sliding mode control law is applied to the degraded linear system.The numerical simulation proves the rationality and feasibility of the derived equivalent model.The active power and reactive power are independently adjusted with good dynamic response.
