Abstract:With 135 references, this review presents the recent application of various preconcentration and separation techniques in atomic fluorescence spectrometry for the sensitive determination and speciation of various elements and their species. It focuses on sample pretreatment, separation, and enrichment-related techniques, including liquid–liquid extraction, solid-phase (micro)extraction, microwave/ultrasound-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, as well as chemical vapor generation. In this review, the historical development and overview of these preconcentration and separation methodologies are briefly discussed, together with a comprehensive collection of application of these methods in combination with atomic fluorescence spectrometry for determination of ultratrace amounts of elements and their species in various sample matrices (liquids and solids).

Abstract:Recent progress in flow injection on-line separation and preconcentration techniques for electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) are reviewed, stressing the advancements made within the past 2 or 3 years. Important trends and potentials for future development are discussed, including the use of air-transport and air-segmentation in on-line separation systems, the use of knotted reactors as a sorption medium, and other designs for on-line coprecipitation and solvent extraction systems to improve the robustness and efficiency of on-line separation systems for ETAAS. Abstract:Flow injection (FI) on-line separation and preconcentration systems for electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) are reviewed, highlighting the main developments in the field since 1990 and work achieved in the authors' laboratory. These include developments in on-line preconcentration systems based on column techniques, solvent extraction, coprecipitation and hydride sequestration. Advantages, limitations and potentials of the FI-ETAAS combination are discussed.

Abstract:Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) as an innovative technique has been widely used in biological research and it offers unique opportunities to visualize distribution and transportation of proteins in various media. For protein chromatographic purification studies, CLSM can further provide direct and detailed information about protein adsorption behaviors. This review highlighted the application of CLSM in investigating protein adsorption processes including single-component and multi-component studies in finite bath adsorption and real-time observation of protein adsorption in the micro-column with various adsorbents. Factors such as liquid phase conditions and the limitation of CLSM application in protein adsorption were discussed. The adsorption profiles in different adsorbents, such as the widely observed shrinking core profile, the overshoot adsorption profile as well as some special profiles were compared and discussed. Abstract:Various improvements in flow-injection systems involving on-line separation and preconcentration by gas diffusion, ion-exchange and liquid—liquid extraction are reviewed and their merits are discussed. On-line preconcentration systems based on gas diffusion are described for the spectrophotometric determination of cyanide, fluoride and ammonia. Different gas/liquid separation devices for hydride-generation and cold-vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (a.a.s.) are compared. Systems are outlined for on-line column preconcentration of cobalt, nickel, vanadium, beryllium and cerium for inductively-coupled plasma/atomic emission spectrometry, and for combinations of column preconcentration with hydride-generation and cold-vapour a.a.s for the determination of ultratrace selenium and mercury. An on-line liquid—liquid extraction/flame a.a.s. system capable of achieving 60-fold enhancement for lead is reported; the limit of detection is 0.02 μg ml−.

Abstract:Analytical atomic spectrometry is a well-established and widely-used analytical technique for the sensitive detection of inorganic elements in diverse samples. Sample pretreatment methods are still a critical part of elemental analysis, which are usually used to remove interfering matrix components and preconcentrate the targets of interest before analysis. Significant advances in the development of sample separation and preconcentration techniques for elemental analysis have been made in recent years. This review focuses on the applications of sample separation and preconcentration techniques for analytical atomic spectrometry, including liquid phase (micro)extraction, cloud point extraction, solid phase (micro)extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, chemical vapor generation as well as hyphenated techniques. This review presents several applications of the above sample pretreatment methods in recent years, whose advantages and drawbacks were also discussed.

Abstract:Fundamental consideration and practical points in the development of on-line preconcentration flow-injection with atomic spectrometric detection are discussed, with emphasis on overall efficiency and accuracy. The terms concentration efficiency (CE) expressed as the enrichment factor achieved per minute by the system, and retention efficiency (%E), together with recovery studies on real samples, are recommended as criteria for the evaluation of the efficiency and reliability of such systems. Time-based sampling and double-column systems without intermediate column washing are recommended for improving efficiency. Large columns (3 mm i.d., 45 mm long) with high sample-loading rates of 9.5 ml min−1 are proposed for achieving high efficiency and accuracy with atomic absorption detection; more careful optimization of column dimensions is needed for detection with inductively-coupled plasma/atomic emission spectrometry. A procedure for the on-line preconcentration of cobalt in water samples was developed under the guidelines presented. An enrichment factor of 48 was achieved at a sampling frequency of 60 h−1 with good recoveries for all the water types studied. The precision was 1.7% r.s.d. at the 40 μg1−1 level, and the detection limit (3σ) was 0.2 μg1−1.

Abstract:Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) has emerged as a powerful analytical technique in estimating various atoms by the measurement of light energy of specific wavelength. This employs usually three different analytical techniques such as atomic emission, atomic absorption and atomic fluorescence. The AAS can measure even trace concentrations of various elements with higher degree of sensitivity and precision. Therefore, AAS possesses considerable position in the modern analytical laboratories. The present review highlights the various components of atomic absorption spectrophotometer, different types of AAS and applications of atomic absorption spectroscopy in various fields such as pharmaceuticals, food, biological, geological, metallurgical, environmental, forensic and marine applications.

Abstract:Membrane technology has been broadly used in environmental and biological fields due to the advantages of low cost, short time, and simple operation. It can be utilized to separate metal ions, small molecules, nanomaterials, and biomolecules. In recent years, many efforts have been made to expand atomic spectrometry (AS) based on filter-assisted separation. This article reviews recent advances in filter membranes including cellulose-based membranes, octadecyl silica membranes, and liquid membranes assisted separation combined with AS. The applications of the filter-assisted procedure in AS were classified and reviewed, including the detection of trace metal ions, nanomaterials, and biomolecules. We also discuss the future perspectives of filter membrane separation by combining AS.

Abstract:Combinations of flow-injection techniques with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (a.a.s.) and inductively-coupled plasma/atomic emission spectrometry (i.c.p./a.e.s.) are reviewed in the general context of agricultural and environmental analysis. The flow-injection systems are valuable for sample introduction; appropriate dispersion control allows the analysis of solutions containing as much as 40% (w/v) urea or phosphate in fertilizers. A study on the determination of cadmium in soil extracts by on-line ion-exchange preconcentration and flame a.a.s. detection is described. The interpolative standard-addition method with i.c.p./a.e.s. detection is outlined. Improvements in the determinations of selenium in environmental samples by hydride-generation a.a.s. and of mercury by cold-vapour a.a.s. are reported.

Abstract:The technique of separation and enrichment for floatation has been widely regarded due to lower cost,simple operation,better selectivity,high enriched multiple.The floatation analytes can be determined directly by spectrometry.In this paper,the research of separation and enrichment technique for floatation was anatomized based on the statistical result of literatures.The theory of key processes of floatation,like contact angle,surface potential and air bubble adsorptive capability was explained.The main factors influencing the floatation results,including pre-separated substance,pH of solution,surfactant,floatation addition agent,floatation temperature,air flow speed,ionic intensity and organic solvent,etc.were concluded.The current information on floatation of internal and overseas application was showed.The future research direction was mentioned.

Abstract:Atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) is a commonly employed method for elemental analysis employed with chemical vapor generation procedures due to its low cost and high sensitivity. Advances in AFS are reviewed for 2014 and 2015 involving instrumentation and novel applications. Major advances include novel applications of diffusive gradients in thin films, photochemical vaporization, and novel atom cells. Significant applications were reported in the fields of food, bioanalytical, materials, and environmental analysis. Atomic fluorescence was employed for elemental speciation, with emphasis on the determination of mercury and arsenic.

Abstract:The knowledge of elemental speciation and interaction between elemental species and ligands (including biomolecules) can provide an understanding of their transport, transformation, bioavailability, metabolic pathways and toxicity in organisms. By taking advantage of the powerful separation capabilities of capillary electrophoresis (CE) in capillaries/microchannels, and the atomic specificity, multi-elemental characteristics and extremely high sensitivity of inductively coupled plasma spectrometries (ICPs), the CE-ICP hyphenation is one of the most preferred choices in elemental speciation and element-ligand/element-biomolecule interaction as well as the indirect determination of non-metallic compounds. This article provides an overview of electrophoresis in capillaries and microchannels coupled to an ICP with respect to interfaces and applications from elemental speciation, element-ligand interaction to indirect determination.

Abstract:X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy has been widely used for decades in a wide range of scientific fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, materials sciences, environmental sciences, etc. This review article is devoted to the applications of XAFS in nanomaterials. The basic principles of XAFS are briefly described from the view point of practical application, including its theory, data analysis and experiments. Using selected examples from recent literatures, the power of XAFS in determination of local atomic/electronic structures is illustrated for various nanomaterials, covering metal and semiconductor nanoparticles, catalysts, core/shell structures, ultrathin nanosheets, and so on. The utilization of time-resolved XAFS technique is also briefly introduced, for in-situ probing the nucleation/growth processes of nanomaterials and identifying reaction intermediates of nanostructured catalysts under operando conditions.

Abstract:An efficient flow injection system with on-line ion-exchange pre-concentration for the determination of heavy metals by flame atomic absorption spectrometry is described. The system features low sample consumption of only 1.6 ml per determination and a high sampling frequency of 120 h–1 which is comparable to conventional flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Enrichment factors (EF) of 25–31 (concentration efficiency = 50–62 EF min–1) were obtained for Cu, Cd and Pb. Relative standard deviations were 1.2–2.8. Low elution flow-rates were used with high nebuliser uptake rates in order to improve the nebulisation efficiency. Conical ion-exchange columns, short, small-bore conduits and three-dimensionally disoriented (3-D) reactors were used to limit the dispersion of the eluted sample zone and/or to improve the precision. Column capacities and elution flow-rates were optimised for the CPG/quinolin-8-ol ion exchanger chosen in order to achieve high enrichment factors and to overcome interferences encountered in sea water analysis.

Abstract:Separation is an essential aspect in analytical chemistry or chemical measurement science. With the capability to separate components within a sample into individual bands or zones distributed spatially or/and temporally, separation makes the analysis or measurement more accurate through separating different components into individual fractions and reducing or even eliminating the interference from sample matrix species. Such a power also makes separation an important tool to purify components of interest from mixtures or natural products for further investigations. Meanwhile, separation can make a subsequent analytical method more sensitive through enriching or concentrating the components of interest in the samples to be tested. Modern separation science and techniques have been well established and are quite mature, making them widely employed in routine scientific research and practices. However, due to the increasing complexity and challenge of analytical tasks that we are facing, advanced separation science and techniques are still in high demand. This inspired us to organize this themed collection to reflect some trends and features of this practically useful, technically diverse and forever progressive area.

Abstract:Chip-based capillary electrophoresis (chip-CE) is under rapid progress due to its high efficiency, fast separation, little sample consumption and integration. Due to the short optical path (30-50 microm), the conventional UV absorbance cannot satisfy the chip detection needs. Atomic fluorescence spectrometer (AFS) is a selective and sensitive detector for hydride-forming elements. With the strong points of low cost and easy operation, AFS is attractive as an ideal detector of chip-CE for mercury, arsenic and selenium, etc. A few important practical aspects of coupling chip-CE to AFS are critically discussed. These include the design of the chip, chip-AFS interface, gas-liquid separator, AFS atomizer, and elimination of the effect of backpressure on separation. The application of the developed chip-CE-AFS to the mercury speciation analysis is highlighted.
