Abstract:The nanocrystalline ferrites Zn0.4Ni0.6Cr0.5LaxFe1.5-xO4 (x=0 similar to 0.10) were prepared with citrate precursor by sol-gel process. The thermolysis process of translating citrate precursor into crystalline was analyzed by means of DSC-TG. The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of the obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The results show that the temperature and the content of doped La have an obvious effect on the crystallite sizes, lattice parameter and morphology of samples. The magnetic properties of the samples can be also tailored by varying the content of La.

Abstract:Single-crystalline and well-dispersed barium strontium titanate (Ba1−xSrxTiO3, x=0–1, BST) nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized in a shape- and composition-controlled manner using a facile solvothermal route. The microstructure and composition of the as-synthesized samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). All the samples were identified as cubic perkovsite phase by XRD. The average particle sizes, morphologies and compositions of all the as-synthesized samples significantly depend on the Ba/Sr molar ratio in the initial reactants. The particle size gradually increases and the morphology ranges from irregular sphere to cube as the strontium proportion increases in the BST. It has also been found that, in all cases, strontium is more readily incorporated into the BST nanocrystals compared with barium. Further experiments display that highly dispersed BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanocrystals could also be obtained with an acceptable crystallinity at room temperature by this solvothermal method.

Abstract:A novel solvothermal method has been successfully developed to obtain nanocrystalline Sn4P3 in an autoclave based on the reaction of SnCl2 · 2H2O with yellow phosphorus at 160°C for 10 h, with potassium borohydride (KBH4) used as the reducing agent and ethanol as the solvent. XRD, TEM, and XPS examinations investigated the phase, grain size, morphology, and purity of the product, respectively. The product is spherical nanocrystalline Sn4P3 with a hexagonal structure. Potassium borohydride and ethanol played important roles in the formation of nanocrystalline Sn4P3. A possible mechanism is proposed as: under the solvothermal condition, Sn2+ was steadily reduced by KBH4 to atomic Sn; subsequently these newborn active atoms homogeneously combined with yellow phosphorus to form nanocrystalline Sn4P3.

Abstract:Y2O3 nanomaterials have been widely used in transparent ceramics and luminescent devices. Recently there are many studies focusing on controlling the size and morphology of Y2O3 in order to obtain better materials performance. In present study, yttrium oxyhydroxide precursor was synthesized via a facile solvothermal process through the dissolution-recrystallization mechanism of Y2O3 raw powders in the ethylenediamine solvent, then nanosized yttrium oxide crystal was prepared from the precursor through post heat treatment process. The effects of solvothermal treatment temperature, holding time, solvent kinds and post heat treatment parameters on crystalline structure, grain shape and size of nanocrystal were investigated by XRD, TEM and TGA-DTA measurements. TEM images reveal that the morphology of product after post heat treatment at 460 °C for 12 h is rice-like nanocrystal. XRD shows that this product is pure cubic Y2O3 cphase. Present study reveals that high purity Y2O3 with rice-like morphology can be easily prepared with average size around 30 nm under suitable post heat treatment parameters. In addition the effects of solvents such as water and ethanol etc. on the crystal structure and morphology were also investigated. It is suggested that dissolution-recrystallization process may be the main mechanism for the formation of nano-sized YOOH precursors under solvothermal reaction condition, and the ethylenediamine solvent is likely to play an important role in controlling the transformation process of yttria precursors to the Y2O3 nanocrystal.

Abstract:A model coupling first principles and thermodynamics was developed to describe the thermal stability of a nanograin structure in solid solution alloys. The thermodynamic functions of solute segregation and conditions for thermal stabilization were demonstrated for both strongly and weakly solute-segregating systems. The dependence of segregation behavior on the grain size, solute concentration and temperature was quantified, where the parameters to control destabilization of the nanograin structure at a given temperature were predicted. For the first time it was found that there exists a transformation from the single-extreme to dual-extreme rule of the total Gibbs free energies of the solid solution systems with the decrease of solute concentration or increase of temperature. The model calculations were confirmed quantitatively by the experimental results, and a nanocrystalline W-10 at%Sc solid solution with a highly stable grain structure in a broad range from room temperature to 1600 K was prepared. The universal mechanism disclosed in this study will facilitate the design of nanocrystalline alloys with high thermal stability through matching of the doping element and the initial grain size.

Abstract:In this report, many nanocrystalline transition metal sulfides were synthesized through a simple novel reaction between metal salts and sulfur powders under solvothermal conditions at low temperature. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Some factors important for the formation of the product and their morphologies are discussed.

Abstract:The preparation of nanocrystalline Cu2SnS3 at synthetic conditions of low temperature (<180°C) was first reported. Nanocrystalline Cu2SnS3 was directly synthesized from the reaction of CuCl2·2H2O with elemental tin and sulfur through a solvothermal process in ethylenediamine at 140–180°C for 15 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, transmission electron microscope (TEM) images, and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were used to characterize the products. The mechanism of the formation of the Cu2SnS3 nanocrystals in the solvothermal process was proposed. The UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and the electric conductivity of products were also studied.

Abstract:A novel solvothermal method has been successfully developed to prepare nanocrystalline CuSbS2 and Ag3SbS3 by the reactions between CuI and AgNO3 with SbCl3 and elemental sulfur in ethylenediamine at 140°C for 12 h, respectively. XRD, TEM and XPS examinations investigated the phase, grain size, morphology and purity of the products, respectively. Ethylenediamine played important roles in the formation of the ternary sulfides. A possible mechanism is proposed and expected to explain similar reactions.

Abstract:A novel solvothermal method has been developed-to obtain nanocrystalline Cu2-xSe at low temperature; CuI and Se were placed at 90 degrees C for 4 h in an autoclave with ethylenediamine as solvent and the product was characterized by XRD, TEM and XPS, The results revealed that as prepared Cu2-xSe grains were, nearly homogeneously spherical and the average grain size was ca. 18 nm, Ethylenediamine coordinated to Cu+ probably plays an important role in the formation of nanocrystalline Cu2-xSe; It is reasonable to expect that this simple one-step solvothermal route can be extended to obtain other nanocrystalline materials.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline α-NiS and β-NiS were synthesized through a solvothermal reducing process at 110 °C with ethanol and pyridine as solvent, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectra (ICP-AES) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the samples. In this reaction, due to the different properties of the solvents, solvent determines the phases of as-prepared NiS. And it was found that the as-prepared α-NiS had higher phase stability than the normal NiS.

By using organic solvents under supercritical conditions as reaction media, chemical reaction and crystallization can be synchronously realized. Materials including diamond, carbon nanotubes, a series of carbides, nitrides, borides, phosphides, III-V and II-VI group semiconductor nanomaterials have been prepared via this method at conditions milder than those of traditional methods. As a low-temperature and convenient synthetic technique, solvothermal process is an exciting, promising approach for designing and preparing advanced materials.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Cu7Te4 was directly synthesized by the reaction of CuCl2·2H2O and tellurium in an autoclave with ethylenediamine as solvent at 160°C for 10 h. X-ray powder diffraction patterns, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and transmission electron microscope images show that the products are hexagonal Cu7Te4 phase and well crystallized with an average size of about 15 nm. The solvent ethylenediamine played an important role in the synthesis of nanocrystalline Cu7Te4. The reaction mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:Nanocrystallines CdSe semiconductor was synthesized through a novel solvothermal process, in which CdCl2, Se, and Na reacted at 120°C for 6h in an autoclave, and ethylenediamine was used as a solvent. An XRD pattern indicated a hexagonal CdSe phase. TEM imaging showed that the product consisted of homogeneous granular particles with an average size of about 7 nm. Photoluminescence spectra of the 7-nm CdSe showed a 0.3-eV blue shift compared with that of the bulk materials, indicating its quantum confinement.

Abstract:5 nm thiospinel FeIn2S4 nanocrystallines were prepared through a solvothermal process at 280 °C. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveal that the product was nanocrystalline FeIn2S4, with cubic cell, and uniform spherical particle morphology. The factors to the formation of uniform FeIn2S4 nanocrystallines with a narrow size distribution were discussed also.

Abstract:ZrS3 nanocrystallites have been synthesized via a solvothermal route by the reaction between ZrCl4 and thiourea at relatively low temperature. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope, X-ray fluorescence, Raman spectrum, and photoluminescence (PL). X-ray diffraction pattern shows the monoclinic cell of ZrS3 with the lattice constants a=5.128 Å, b=3.611 Å, c=9.012 Å, β=97.13°. The result of X-ray fluorescence gives a Zr(Hf):S mole ratio 1:2.97. The Raman spectrum of the ZrS3 nanocrystallites has a slightly red shift in comparison with that of ZrS3 single crystals. The room temperature photoluminescence of ZrS3 nanocrystallites is also reported.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse CdS semiconductor nanocrystals have been successfully fabricated by a simple solvothermal route using cheap and low-cost normal inorganic compounds as precursors. The reaction temperature is demonstrated to be critical for the fabrication of the monodisperse nanocrystals. The nanocrystals were characterized by XRD, TEM, UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra. Without involving special conditions, this method can be expected to make considerable contribution to the fabrication of various nanocrystals and nanocrystals-related research.

Abstract:A novel low temperature solvothermal pathway to CdSxSe1−x nanowires (0≤x≤1.0) was successfully developed. It was found that both temperature and solvent have important effects on the formation of CdSxSe1−x nanowires and their incorporating process via the solvothermal process in ethylenediamine. The morphology of CdSxSe1−x nanocrystallites was well controlled by choosing the appropriate solvent.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Bi2Se3 was synthesized by a novel solvothermal method at low temperature. During the solvothermal process, BiCl3, Se, and NaI were kept in an autoclave at 130°C for 4 h. NaI was used as the reductant. Ethylenediamine was selected as the solvent and played an important role in the formation of nanocrystalline Bi2Se3. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As-prepared nanocrystalline Bi2Se3 consisted of nearly homogenous and spherical grains; the average size was about 25 nm.

Abstract:A general approach has been developed to synthesize high-quality Cu-In-S based multicomponent solid-solution nanocrystals (NCs) of Zn-2x(Culn)(1-x)S-2, (Culn)(1-x)Cd2xS2, and (ZnS)(x)(CuInS2)(CdS)(z) at relatively low temperature. This was achieved in a noncoordinating solvent system (toluene) by a simple solvothermal process using metal diethyldithiocarbamate complexes as the precursors. The composition, crystalline structure, size, and bang gap of the NCs could be readily tuned by the precursors used and synthesis conditions. This work provides useful understanding for the synthesis of solid-solution NCs that are of interest for photocatalyst, solar cell, and other applications.
