Abstract:Magnetotransport properties of a two-layered La2-2xCa1+2xMn2O7 (x = 0.2) polycrystal have been studied as function of temperatures and applied fields. It was found that the variation of the resistivity with temperature at high temperatures obeys the variable-range hopping law under various applied fields. Two maxima of magnetoresistance (MR) were observed under applied fields of I and 0.15 T, while no MR peaks were found under applied field of 0.1 T. At 10 K, the MR attain as large as -17%. -25% and -30% under applied fields of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15 T, respectively. The large low-field MR at low temperatures can be attributed to the effects of the nearly fully spin-polarized carriers' tunneling through the insulating (La,Ca)(2)O-2 layers between the adjacent MnO2 bilayers. Abstract:An effective tunneling Hamiltonian including spin-flip effect is proposed to account for the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in mixed-valence manganite tunnel junctions and the current-perpendicular-to-plane TMR in layered manganite crystals. It is found that the electron spin-flip tunneling plays an important role in diminishing the amplitude of the TMR ratio. The theoretical results are in agreement with the recent experimental observations in the magnetic trilayer junction structure La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and the bulk crystals La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7. It is suggested that reducing electron spin-flip tunneling is a potential way to gain larger TMR in the manganite tunnel junctions. [S0163-1829(98)02225-5].

Abstract:Magnetotransport properties of a two-layered La1.6Ca1.4Mn2O7 polycrystal have been examined as a function of temperature and applied field. It was found that the magnetic transition temperature (Tc) is about 70 K higher than the insulator–metal transition temperature (Tp). Two peaks were observed on both the temperature dependence of the imaginary part of the ac magnetic susceptibility χ′′(T ) and that of the magnetoresistance MR(T). One is slightly below Tp∼107 K and the other is near Tc∼170 K. Below 70 K, the MR ratio increases with decreasing temperature. Around and above Tp but below Tc, the magnetization shows some indication of saturation, whereas the MR ratio shows no indication of saturation. The magnetotransport properties can be explained by considering the anisotropy exchange interactions along the a–b plane and the c direction, and the low-temperature MR can be attributed to the effects of the nearly fully spin-polarized carriers’ tunneling through the insulating (La,Ca)2O2 layers between the adjacent MnO2 bilayers.

Abstract:The electrical resistivity ( ρ ) and magnetoresistance of polycrystalline pellets of La1-xCaxMnO3 were measured in the 10—300K range in magnetic fields up to 1.8T. It was found that when x increases, both the peak of the electrical resistivity and the peak of magnetoresistance occurs at lower temperatures.The authors suggested that the change of x results in the change of proportion of Mn4+ ions.Variation of the proportion of Mn4+ ions leads to the change of magnetic structure of La1-xCaxMnO3.Zener's model of double exchange coupling can be used to explain the experimental results.

Abstract:We present a manganite-titanate junction composed of a 5 nm La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 film and a 1 wt% Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrate, which exhibits a considerable magnetic field effect. The magnetoresistance (MR = (R-H-R-0)/R-0) of the junction is weak in the forward direction but large in the reverse direction. At 300 K, a 5 T magnetic field can lead to a MR larger than-15%. Under a 5 T field, the MR at -1V is no less than -10% in a wide temperature range from 10 to 310 K. As a comparison, the MR in the junction based on the 150 nm La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 film is weak and the MR in the junction based on the 2 nm La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 film is large only at relatively low temperatures. These results provide a unique possibility of fabricating junctions with large room-temperature MR by tuning the thickness of the manganite film.

Abstract:A junction composed of ultrathin La0.9Ca0.1Mn3+delta (LCMO) film and 1 wt.% Nb-doped SrTiO3 was fabricated and its magnetoresistance (MR) was studied and compared with LCMO film. It was found that the resistance of the junction has a similar dependence on magnetic field as that of the LCMO film: the curvature of R H curves is upward above Curie temperature (T-C) and downward below T-C. These behaviours strongly suggest that the rotation of ferromagnetic clusters in manganite also causes MR in the corresponding junction. This MR can be qualitatively understood by the change of the width of the barrier induced by the rotation of ferromagnetic clusters. These results suggest a possibility to obtain junctions with large low-field MR.

Abstract:A polycrystalline La-2/3 (Ca0.60Ba0.40)(1/3) MnO3 was prepared by standard solid reaction method. Magnetization(M) and magnetoresistance of the sample were measured between T= 77 K and 350 K. It is found that some correlations exist in the external field dependency of the magneto resistance magneto resistance and M in the low and high temperature regions. Moreover, there are different magnetic field dependence of magneto resistance and magnetization in different temperature ranges, which indicates the presence of different magnetoresistance mechanisms. Based on the models of spin-polarized tunneling and percolation model, the simulated magneto resistance obtained using Monte Carlo method well explains the experimental fact.

Abstract:Summary form only given, as follows. Giant tunneling magnetoresistance effect (TMR) as large as 1280% at 4.2 K and 158% at 300 K was observed in Zn/sub 0.41/Fe/sub 2.59/O/sub 4/-/spl alpha/-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ polycrystalline sample. The Zn/sub 0.41/Fe/sub 2.59/O/sub 4/ grains are separated by insulating /spl alpha/-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ thin layer boundaries. The nanostructure pattern has been verified by TEM and HREM and the thickness of /spl alpha/-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ boundary is about 6-7 nm. The huge TMR is attributed to the high spin-polarization of Zn/sub 0/./sub 41/Fe/sub 2.59/O/sub 4/ grains and the insulating antiferromagnetic /spl alpha/-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ thin layer. The conductivity is found to depend exponentially on reciprocal temperature that means the electronic transfer is dominated by thermally activated tunneling from grain to grain. The Zn/sub x/Fe/sub 3-x/O/sub 4/ ferrite is a new type half-metallic material and the huge TMR at room temperature is a new breaking advance.

Abstract:La 0.55 Er 0.05 Ca 0.4 MnO 3 in bulk form was prepared both by solid-state reaction and by a sol–gel method. Samples prepared by both methods showed a moderate magnetic entropy change near its Curie temperature, this spread to a large temperature span upon the application of a magnetic field of 1.8 T. The material prepared by the sol–gel method exhibits a large magnetoresistance below its Curie temperature, which is considered to result from the interfacial spin-dependent tunneling.

Abstract:. Amorphous/crystalline mixed La 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3 (LSMO) thin films on quartz wafers are prepared at different depositing temperatures using laser ablation and their low-field magnetoresistive property is investigated. It is argued that the insulating amorphous layers separating the magnetic microcrystalline grains may act as the barriers for electron tunneling. The rapid decay of magnetoresistance with increasing temperature is explained by the spin-polarized inter-grain tunneling. Given the spin-polarized inter-grain tunneling as the probable mechanism, it is believed that the spin flip during inter-grain tunneling reaches a minimum at the optimized depositing temperature of 600 °C and consequently the maximal low-field magnetoresistance is obtained.

Abstract:Polycrystalline two-layered La2.5-2xK0.5+2xMn2O7+delta (x = 0.075) and ABO(3)-type La1-xKxMnO3+delta (x = 0.075) have been prepared by a modified sol-gel method and comparisons between their structures and magnetic and electric properties have been made. Compared with the La1-xKxMnO3+delta compound, a large deviation between the metal-insulator transition temperature (T-rho) and the magnetic transition temperature (T-c) and a characteristic low-temperature magnetoresistance effect under a relatively low magnetic field have been observed in the polycrystalline two-layered La2.5-2xK0.5+2xMn2O7+delta compound.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline La0.7Sr0.3Mn0.9M0.1O3 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu) powder samples were prepared by a sol-gel method. In the samples Mn atoms were partially substituted by a transition metal M. Pure perovskite phase nanocrystalline grains (similar to60 nm in diameter) were confirmed for all the samples through XRD and SEM observations. Magnetization and magnetoresistance of selected samples were investigated over a temperature range of 5 to 350 K, under a magnetic field of up to 5 T. Strong low field sensitive magnetoresistance was detected in Fe and Ni substituted samples. Spin polarized tunnelling and substitution modified non-balance magnetization processes are believed to be the origin of the enhanced low field sensitivity.

Abstract:Nanoscale layered-perovskite La2.5-xK0.5+xMn2O7 (0 < x < 0.5) have been prepared by the modified sol-gel method, and their structural, magnetic and electric properties have been studied. The experimental results show that these materials exhibit paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transitions at 183, 216, 230, 238 and 249K for x = 0.05, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35 and 0.45, respectively. For all compositions of La2.5-xK0.5+xMn2O7 investigated here, we have observed no metal-nonmetal transition phenomena for the whole temperature region (80 - 300 K). The nanoscale samples exhibit highly enhanced magnetoresistance (MR) effects especially at low temperatures (< T-C). The MR behaviour can be explained by taking into account the two-dimensionality with anisotropy of the Mn-O networks and nanoscale grain size effect in the layered manganese perovskites.

Abstract:We report an observation of anomalous anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in bilayered La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 single crystals. A giant AMR is found to be 80% under a magnetic field of 1 T near the metal-insulator transition temperature, where AMR is defined as AMR=[ρ(H⊥c)−ρ(H∥c)]/ρ(H⊥c)×100%, and ρ(H⊥c) and ρ(H∥c) are the resistivity with the magnetic field perpendicular and parallel to c-axis, respectively. The AMR effect shows strong temperature and magnetic field dependences, and indicates a close interrelation with the anisotropic field-tuned metal-insulator transition.

Abstract:The grain-size-dependent transport properties in the granular perovskite ${\mathrm{La}}_{0.85}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{0.15}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{3}$ have been investigated. A giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect, similar to that observed in granular transition metals, and a crystal intrinsic colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) have been simultaneously observed. With grain growth, the GMR effect gradually weakens and the intrinsic CMR effect becomes prominent in the present granular system. A resistivity formula originating from interfacial tunneling is obtained and the theoretical calculation is found to be in good agreement with our experimental results.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic (FM) La-2/3(Ca0.6Ba0.4)(1/3)MnO3 and antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiO nanoparticles were synthesized using sol-gel method, respectively. La-2/3(Ca0.6Ba0.4)(1/3)MnO3 (1 mol)/ x NiO (x= 0, 0.05 and 0.15mol) composites with the coated NiO were prepared. The experimental results indicate that, both phases of LCBMO and NiO coexist clearly in the composites and the sizes of the NiO nanoparticles in the intergranular region between the LCBMO particles are very small; the interface of NiO influences evidently the value of MR and it is found that the tunneling MR for x=0.05 is the largest in three samples. The magnetoresistance behavior has been explained by two-level model of tunneling magnetoresistance and percolation model well.

Abstract:Using mechanical alloying we have successfully prepared polycrystalline samples of ferromagnetic La0.7(SrxCa1−x)0.3MnO3 which exhibit a giant magnetoresistance (MR) effect. The influence of preparation on resistivity and the MR behavior has been investigated. Upon increasing the annealing temperature from 973K to 1473K, the compactness, grain size and metal–insulator transition temperature Tρ increase for the samples with x=0.2, whereas the Curie temperature Tc is found to be less affected. All the La0.7(Sr0.2Ca0.8)0.3MnO3 samples exhibit a large magnetoresistance ratio Δρ/ρ0 at 77K and a second maximum around the Curie temperature. For the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 samples, with increasing temperature from 77K to room temperature, the resistivity increases and the MR ratio decreases monotonically.
