Abstract:We give in this note some new bounds on rho(c)(G) in terms of sigma(c)(G) for several classes of finite groups, in particular, we prove that rho(c)(G) less than or equal to 4 sigma(c)(G) for any finite solvable group G, which improves some known results. We also pose some related open problems.

Abstract:In 2003, Héthelyi and Külshammer proposed that if $G$ is a finite group and $p$ is a prime dividing the group order, then $k(G)\geq 2\sqrt{p-1}$, and they proved this conjecture for solvable $G$ and showed that it is sharp for those primes $p$ for which $\sqrt{p-1}$ is an integer. This initiated a flurry of activity, leading to many generalizations and variations of the result; in particular, today the conjecture is known to be true for all finite groups. In this note, we put forward a natural new and stronger conjecture, which is sharp for all primes $p$, and we prove it for solvable groups, and when $p$ is large, also for arbitrary groups.

Abstract:For n is an element of N, we denote by pi(n) the set of prime divisors of rt. Let G be a finite group, denote by cl(G(p')) the set of p-regular conjugacy classes of G. Set rho(p') (G) = {q prime : q parallel to C vertical bar, C is an element of cl(G(p'))} and sigma(p)' (G)= max{pi vertical bar C vertical bar)vertical bar : C is an element of cl(G(p'))}. For a solvable group G, we prove that rho(p)' (G)I is bounded by sigma(p)' (G) if p = 2, or p is a Fermat prime, or G has a cyclic Sylow p-subgroup.

Abstract:Let $G = K \rtimes \langle t \rangle $ be a finitely generated group where $K$ is abelian and $\langle t\rangle$ is the infinite cyclic group. Let $ R $ be a finite symmetric subset of $K$ such that $S = \{ (r,1),(0,t^{\pm 1}) \mid r \in R \}$ is a generating set of $G$. We prove that the spherical conjugacy ratio, and hence the conjugacy ratio, of $G$ with respect to $S$ is $0$ unless $G$ is virtually abelian, confirming a conjecture of Ciobanu, Cox and Martino in this case. We also show that the Baumslag--Solitar group $\mathrm{BS}(1,2)$ has a one-sided Følner sequence $F$ such that the conjugacy ratio with respect to $F$ is non-zero, even though $\mathrm{BS}(1,2)$ is not virtually abelian. This is in contrast to two-sided Følner sequences, where Tointon showed that the conjugacy ratio with respect to a two-sided Følner sequence is positive if and only if the group is virtually abelian.

Improved covering results for conjugacy classes of symmetric groups via hypercontractivity

Abstract:We study covering numbers of subsets of the symmetric group $S_n$ that exhibit closure under conjugation, known as \emph{normal} sets. We show that for any $\epsilon>0$, there exists $n_0$ such that if $n>n_0$ and $A$ is a normal subset of the symmetric group $S_n$ of density $\ge e^{-n^{2/5 - \epsilon}}$, then $A^2 \supseteq A_n$. This improves upon a seminal result of Larsen and Shalev (Inventiones Math., 2008), with our $2/5$ in the double exponent replacing their $1/4$. Our proof strategy combines two types of techniques. The first is `traditional' techniques rooted in character bounds and asymptotics for the Witten zeta function, drawing from the foundational works of Liebeck--Shalev, Larsen--Shalev, and more recently, Larsen--Tiep. The second is a sharp hypercontractivity theorem in the symmetric group, which was recently obtained by Keevash and Lifshitz. This synthesis of algebraic and analytic methodologies not only allows us to attain our improved bounds but also provides new insights into the behavior of general independent sets in normal Cayley graphs over symmetric groups.

Denote by IBrp(G) and cl(Gp′) the set of irreducible p-Brauer characters and the set of p-regular conjugacy classes of G, respectively. Set ρp(G) = {q prime: q|ϕ(1), ϕ ∈IBrp(G)}, , σp(G) = max{|π(ϕ(1))|: ϕ ∈IBrp(G)}, and . For a solvable group G, we prove that |ρp(G)| and are bounded by σp(G) and , respectively, if a well-known Diophantine equation has finite integer solutions.
Rational cohomology and Zariski dense subgroups of solvable linear algebraic groups

Abstract:In this article, we establish results concerning the cohomology of Zariski dense subgroups of solvable linear algebraic groups. We show that for an irreducible solvable $\mathbb{Q}$-defined linear algebraic group $\mathbf{G}$, there exists an isomorphism between the cohomology rings with coefficients in a finite dimensional rational $\mathbf{G}$-module $M$ of the associated $\mathbb{Q}$-defined Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g_\mathbb{Q}}$ and Zariski dense subgroups $\Gamma \leq \mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Q})$ that satisfy the condition that they intersect the $\mathbb{Q}$-split maximal torus discretely. We further prove that the restriction map in rational cohomology from $\mathbf{G}$ to a Zariski dense subgroup $\Gamma \leq \mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Q})$ with coefficients in $M$ is an injection. We then derive several results regarding finitely generated solvable groups of finite abelian rank and their representations on cohomology.

Abstract:Given two conjugate mapping classes f and g, we produce a conjugating element w such that |w| < K(|f|+|g|), where |.| denotes the word metric with respect to a fixed generating set, and K is a constant depending only on the generating set. As a consequence, the conjugacy problem for mapping class groups is exponentially bounded.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group. A subset $S$ of $G$ is said to normally generate $G$ if $G$ is the normal closure of $S$ in $G.$ In this case, any element of $G$ can be written as a product of conjugates of elements of $S$ and their inverses. If $g\in G$ and $S$ is a normally generating subset of $G,$ then we write $\| g\|_{S}$ for the length of a shortest word in $\mbox{Conj}_{G}(S^{\pm 1}):=\{h^{-1}sh | h\in G, s\in S \, \mbox{or} \, s{^{-1}}\in S \}$ needed to express $g.$ For any normally generating subset $S$ of $G,$ we write $\|G\|_{S} =\mbox{sup}\{\|g\|_{S} \,|\,\, g\in G\}.$ Moreover, we write $\Delta(G)$ for the supremum of all $\|G\|_{S},$ where $S$ is a finite normally generating subset of $G,$ and we call $\Delta(G)$ the conjugacy diameter of $G.$ In this paper, we determine the conjugacy diameters of the semidihedral $2$-groups, the generalized quaternion groups and the modular $p$-groups. This is a natural step after the determination of the conjugacy diameters of dihedral groups, which were recently found by the first author (finite case) and by Kedra, Libman and Martin (infinite case).

Bounds for Characters of the Symmetric Group: A Hypercontractive Approach

Abstract:Finding upper bounds for character ratios is a fundamental problem in asymptotic group theory. Previous bounds in the symmetric group have led to remarkable applications in unexpected domains. The existing approaches predominantly relied on algebraic methods, whereas our approach combines analytic and algebraic tools. Specifically, we make use of a tool called `hypercontractivity for global functions' from the theory of Boolean functions. By establishing sharp upper bounds on the $L^p$-norms of characters of the symmetric group, we improve existing results on character ratios from the work of Larsen and Shalev [Larsen M., Shalev A. Characters of the symmetric group: sharp bounds and applications. Invent. math. 174 645-687 (2008)]. We use our norm bounds to bound Kronecker coefficients, Fourier coefficients of class functions, product mixing of normal sets, and mixing time of normal Cayley graphs. Our approach bypasses the need for the $S_n$-specific Murnaghan--Nakayama rule. Instead we leverage more flexible representation theoretic tools, such as Young's branching rule, which potentially extend the applicability of our method to groups beyond $S_n$.

Abstract:For $$n\in \mathbb {N}$$ , we denote by $$\pi (n)$$ the set of prime divisors of n. For a block B of a finite group G, let $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ be the set of irreducible complex characters of G belonging to B. Let $$\rho (B)$$ be the set of those primes dividing the degree of some character in $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ , and let $$\sigma (B)$$ be the maximal number of primes dividing such a degree. For a solvable group G, we prove that $$|\rho (B)|\le 3\sigma (B)+1$$ . This provides a block result in the spirit of Huppert’s $$\rho $$ - $$\sigma $$ conjecture.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $\sigma_1(G)=\frac{1}{|G|}\sum_{H\leq G}\,|H|$. Under some restrictions on the number of conjugacy classes of (non-normal) maximal subgroups of $G$, we prove that if $\sigma_1(G)<\frac{117}{20}\,$, then $G$ is solvable. This partially solves an open problem posed in \cite{9}.

Abstract:The gonality conjecture, proved by Ein–Lazarsfeld, asserts that the gonality of a nonsingular projective curve of genus g can be detected from its syzygies in the embedding given by a line bundle of sufficiently large degree. An effective result obtained by Rathmann says that any line bundle of degree at least 4g−3 would work in the gonality theorem. In this note, we develop a new method to improve the degree bound to 4g−4 with two exceptional cases.

Abstract:G. Navarro and P. H. Tiep, among others, have studied groups with few rational conjugacy classes or few rational irreducible characters. In this paper we look at the opposite extreme. Let $G$ be a finite group. Given a conjugacy class $K$ of $G$, we say it is irrational if there is some $\chi \in \operatorname{Irr}(G)$ such that $\chi(K) \not \in \mathbb{Q}$. One of our main results shows that, when $G$ contains at most $5$ irrational conjugacy classes, then $|\operatorname{Irr}_{\mathbb{Q}} (G)| = | \operatorname{cl}_{\mathbb{Q}} (G)|$. This suggests some duality with the known results and open questions on groups with few rational irreducible characters.

Abstract:We develop new and precise geometric descriptions of the conjugacy class $[x]$ and coconjugation set $\operatorname{C}(x,x') = \{ y \in \overline{W} \mid yxy^{-1} = x' \}$ for all elements $x,x'$ of any affine Coxeter group $\overline{W}$. The centralizer of $x$ in $\overline{W}$ is the special case $\operatorname{C}(x,x)$. The key structure in our description of the conjugacy class $[x]$ is the mod-set ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w) = (w-\operatorname{I})R^\vee$, where~$w$ is the finite part of $x$ and $R^\vee$ is the coroot lattice. The coconjugation set $\operatorname{C}(x,x')$ is then described by ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w')$ together with the fix-set of $w'$, where $w'$ is the finite part of $x'$. For any element $w$ of the associated finite Weyl group $W$, the mod-set of $w$ is contained in the classical move-set ${Mov}(w) = \operatorname{Im}(w - \operatorname{I})$. We prove that the rank of ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w)$ equals the dimension of ${Mov}(w)$, and then further investigate type-by-type the surprisingly subtle structure of the $\mathbb{Z}$-module ${Mod}_\overline{W}(w)$. As corollaries, we determine exactly when ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w) = {Mov}(w) \cap R^\vee$, in which case our closed-form descriptions of conjugacy classes and coconjugation sets are as simple as possible.
