Abstract:Based on the concept of classical phase, we formulate a new explanation for the quantum phase from the quantum mechanical point of view. The quantum phase is the canonically conjugate variable of an angular momentum operator, which corresponds to the angular position φ in an actual physical space with a classical reference frame, but it takes a complex exponential form e iφ≡cosφ+i sinφ in the abstract Hilbert space of a quantum reference frame. This formulation is simply the famous Euler formula in a complex number field. In particular, when φ = π/2, the correlative quantum phase is a unitary pure imaginary number e iπ/2≡cos(π/2)+i sin(π/2) ≡ i. By using a photon state-vector function that is the general solution of photon Schrödinger equation and can completely describe a photon’s behavior, we discuss the relationship between the angular momentum of a photon and the phase of the photon; we also analyze the intrinsic relationship between the macroscopic light wave phase and the microscopic photon phase.

Abstract:In this paper, the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory is generalized for the study of systems with non-Hermitian time-dependent Hamiltonians. It is then used to study the nonadiabatic cyclic evolution and the Aharonov-Anandan phase. It is shown that the study of noncyclic evolution can be reduced to the study of cyclic evolution. The two-level dissipative system and the classical time-dependent harmonic oscillator are discussed as illustrative examples.

Abstract:In this paper, the exact solution and time-evolution operator for the system with a su(1,1)(+(s)h(4) Hamiltonian are found by making use of Lewis-Riesenfeld quantum theory. The time-evolution operator is then used to derive the Aharonov-Anandan phase. Finally, the noncylclic evolution is discussed with the help of the Aharonov-Anandan phase and the Berry phase is calculated by taking the adiabatic limit.

Abstract:On the assumption that a Cooper pair acts as a Bose particle and based on the newly established representation, which is the common eigenvector of two particles' relative position and total momentum, we introduce a mesoscopic Josephson junction Hamiltonian constituted by two-mode Bose phase operator and number-difference operator. The number-difference-phase uncertainty relation can then be set up, which implies the existence of Josephson current.

Abstract:An alternative concept of the basic invariants is introduced. The Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory is extended to obtain a generalized invariant formulation. The formulation is then used to establish four facts: (i) Any invariant for a quantum system can be constructed in terms of the basic invariants. (ii) It is possible to introduce a solution-generating technique by making use of the basic invariants. (iii) The path integral in the generalized invariant formulation reduces to an ordinary integral. (iv) The study of noncyclic evolution of a quantum system reduces explicitly to the study of the cyclic evolution. Finally, phase factors and general solution for the driven generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator are studied as an illustrative example.

Abstract:With the aid of |η〉 representation (see Eq. (8a)), which is the common eigenvector of (âs + âi †) and (âs † + âi), we demonstrate that the nonlinear phase operator √âs+âi †/â s †+âi proposed by Hradii for the Sharpiro-Wagner phase measurement scheme is actually equivalent to Ban's phase operator based on his relative number states. In other words, we reveal that Ban's phase operator is identical to the SWH phase operator, though they appear in completely different forms. Remarkably, it is shown that the action of the nonlinear SWH phase operator on a two-mode twin-photon state can make up the relative number state. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract:Based on Feynman's explanation that a Cooper pair is "a bound pair act as a Bose particle", we propose a bosonic phase operator formalism and a bosonic Hamiltonian model for Josephson junction. The Cooper pair number - phase uncertainty relation is thus established. The corresponding minimum uncertainty state is derived which turns out to be a phase state.

Abstract:We show that the newly found complete and orthonormal representation [lambda\, which is constructed in terms of guiding centers and canonical momenta of an electron moving in a uniform magnetic field, also helps us to establish a systematic phase operator theory. The unitary phase operator, interpreted as a quantity canonically conjugated to the electron angular momentum, manifestly exhibits in the [lambda\ representation its phase behavior. As a byproduct, the phase distribution function, in the correct sense of probability in quantum mechanics, can also be defined by the [lambda\ representation.

Abstract:Recent theoretical insights into the possibility of non-Abelian phases in nu = 2/3 fractional quantum Hall states revived the interest in the numerical phase diagram of the problem. We investigate the effect of various kinds of two-body interlayer couplings on the (330) bilayer state and exactly solve the Hamiltonian for up to 14 electrons on sphere and torus geometries. We consider interlayer tunneling, short-ranged repulsive/attractive pseudopotential interactions, and Coulomb repulsion. We find a 6-fold ground-state degeneracy on the torus when the interlayer hollow-core interaction is dominant. To identify the topological nature of this phase we measure the orbital-cut entanglement spectrum, quasihole counting, topological entanglement entropy, and wave-function overlap. Comparing the numerical results to the theoretical predictions, we interpret this 6-fold ground-state degeneracy phase to be the non-Abelian bilayer Fibonacci state.

We discuss the interference condition between condensates and the visibility of the interference pattern reflecting the interaction between the condensates.

Abstract:In the present paper, we investigate the Berry phase and the Hannay angle of an interacting two-mode boson system and obtain their analytic expressions in explicit forms. The relation between the Berry phase and the Hannay angle is discussed. We find that, in the large-particle-number limit, the classical Hannay angle equals the particle number derivative of the quantum Berry phase except for a sign. This relationship is applicable to other many-body boson systems where the coherent-state description is available and the total particle number is conserved. The measurement of the classical Hannay angle in the many-body systems is briefly discussed as well.

Abstract:A constructive reversed index theorem concerning the polar decomposition of an operator into a product of a unitary exponential phase operator and a Hermitian amplitude operator is investigated. Its applications to the construction of Hermitian phase operators of fermions and phase-difference operators between bosons or fermions are presented. Specifically, a Hermitian operator is constructed for the phase difference between a single-mode fermion and boson, which is justified by the fact that it is exactly the interaction part of the Hamiltonian of the Jaynes-Cummings Model. Furthermore, a Hermitian phase operator of a single-mode boson can also be defined referring to a single-mode fermion. All those quantized phases and phase-differences are found to obey a quantum addition rule instead of the ordinary commutative addition rule.

Abstract:We present a method for calculating the Aharonov-Anandan phase for time-independent Hamiltonians that avoids the calculation of evolution operators. We compare the generic method used to calculate the Aharonov-Anandan phase with the method proposed here through four examples; a spin-1/2 particle in a constant magnetic field, an arbitrary infinite-sized Hamiltonian with two known eigenvalues, a Fabry-Perot cavity with one movable mirror and a three mirrors cavity with a slightly transmissive movable middle mirror.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize Dirac’s phase operator \(\frac {1}{\sqrt {N}}a\) by defining a new phase operator \(\sqrt {\frac {a+\tilde {a}^{\dagger }}{a^{\dagger }+\tilde {a}}}\) in doubled Fock space, where \(\tilde {a}\) is a fictitious mode which annihilates the fictitious vacuum state \(\left \vert \tilde {0}\right \rangle \). It turns out that \(\sqrt {\frac {a+\tilde {a}^{\dagger }}{a^{\dagger }+\tilde {a}}}\) corresponds to a classical phase in the entangled state representation and is unitary. Remarkably, \(\left \langle \tilde {0}\right \vert \sqrt {\frac {a+\tilde {a}^{\dagger }}{a^{\dagger }+\tilde {a}}}\left \vert \tilde {0}\right \rangle \) is just the Paul’s phase operator whose antinormally ordered form is \({\vdots } \frac {1}{\sqrt {N}}a\vdots \). We also employ the method of integration within ordered product of operators to obtain the Fock representation of Paul’s phase operator, from which one can see how it deffers from Susskind-Glogower’s phase operator.
