Abstract:A high temperature three-body abrasive wear tester has been designed and made. In order to exhibit the effect of oxidation on the wear amount of specimen and to simulate various service conditions, the oxygen content in atmosphere, the time of exposing specimen in atmosphere and the intensity of abrasion can be controlled in the tester. In the temperature range 20–900 °C, both the discriminability of wear resistances of materials and the data reproducibility of the tester are quite satisfactory. Moreover, an intermittent oxidation-abrasion test procedure has been established for investigating the interaction of oxidation and abrasion at elevated temperature. By comparing the result of test performed in argon atmosphere with that in ambient atmosphere, the respective effects of oxidation and abrasion on volume loss of specimen can be clearly distinguished.

Abstract:To evaluate the abradability of gas seal coating materials under extreme conditions, a high-temperature and highspeed abradable tester was developed, which can be used to simulate the high-speed rubbing behavior between seal coatings and rotating components in aero-engines. The simulated disk and blade were able to run stably at high speed connected with a shaft driven by an AC motor with high power and a gear increaser. The feeding movement of the coating sample in radial and axial directions was completed by a XY feeding platform with high precision to simulate the rubbing interaction with the highspeed rotating blade. The coating sample was heated by a supersonic flame to simulate the high temperature environment. Rubbing forces, impact acceleration and friction heat were measured using the multicomponent dynamometer, acceleration sensor and infrared thermometer and the data was collected and analyzed through a high-speed data acquisition system. Test results show that abrasion tests can be conducted stably using this tester with reliable results when the blade tip velocity varied from 20 to 450 m/s, incursion rate from 2 to 2 000 mu m/s, and heating temperature from RT to 1 200 degrees C.
Enhancing High-Temperature Wear Resistance by Constructing the Amorphous-Crystal Heterointerface Structure in WO3/TiO2 Composite Coatings

Abstract:The WO3/TiO2 composite coatings with varying amorphous content were fabricated in electrolytes with varying addition of tungsten source, and their tribological properties were tested from 25 ℃ to 600 ℃. The results indicated the composite coatings showed better mechanical and tribological properties at room temperature and exhibited superior wear resistance at high temperatures especially for 400 ℃. The enhanced high-temperature wear resistance was attributed to the formation of nanocrystals and the establishment of amorphous-crystal heterointerface, which effectively impedes dislocation movement and makes them accumulate dispersed along the interface because of the small size of nanocrystals. This work offers a theoretical foundation for enhancing the wear properties of the coatings under high-temperature conditions through the construction of an amorphous-crystal structure.
An Ultra-High Temperature Testing Instrument under Oxidation Environment Up to 1800 °C.

Abstract:A new testing instrument was developed to measure the high-temperature constitutive relation and strength of materials under an oxidative environment up to 1800 °C. A high temperature electric resistance furnace was designed to provide a uniform temperature environment for the mechanical testing, and the temperature could vary from room temperature (RT) to 1800 °C. A set of semi-connected grips was designed to reduce the stress. The deformation of the specimen gauge section was measured by a high temperature extensometer. The measured results were acceptable compared with the results from the strain gauge method. Meanwhile, tensile testing of alumina was carried out at RT and 800 °C, and the specimens showed brittle fracture as expected. The obtained Young's modulus was in agreement with the reported value. In addition, tensile experiment of ZrB2-20%SiC ceramic was conducted at 1700 °C and the high-temperature tensile stress-strain curve was first obtained. Large plastic deformation up to 0.46% and the necking phenomenon were observed before the fracture of specimen. This instrument will provide a powerful research tool to study the high temperature mechanical property of materials under oxidation and is benefit for the engineering application of materials in aerospace field.

Abstract:For the extreme environmental conditions caused by high and low temperature,alternating temperature,high-speed,heavy load in the field of aerospace,and the typical characteristics of bearings and gears,the high-speed sliding-rolling contact friction testing machine was developed.The structure and capability were introduced.The surface failure experiment was carried out by using the tester.The experimentation shows this tester can simulate the extreme conditions.With sensitive response to experimental parameters,it gives real-time monitoring and stores experimental datas of material limiting.

Abstract:A high temperature test rig for corrosion-wear in molten metal has been developed to investigate the corrosion-wear mechanism in molten metal. The key technological parameters include rotating main axis speed of 0~150 r/min and loading in range of 0~200 N, measuring frictional force in range of 0~100 N, testing temperature at 25~1000°C as well as temperature-control precision at ±1°C Corrosion-wear behavior of H13 steel in liquid aluminum was measured with the rig. The results indicate that the rig can simulate the interaction behavior of corrosion-wear of the material in molten metal accurately, and can carry out the data acquisition of friction stably.

Abstract:Rock mechanical property testing under high-temperature true triaxial compression conditions is significantly important to understanding the stability of deep underground engineering rock masses where high temperature exists. This article presents the development, calibration and application of a self-designed true triaxial test system for investigating rock mechanical behaviors under coupled high-temperature and high-pressure conditions with cuboid rock samples. The test system is consisted of four independent parts, respectively for mechanical loading in three axis, thermal loading up to 250 °C, deformation and temperature measurement, and the data acquisition center. The key technology and calibration method of the measurement sensors were introduced. The primary testing results of Jinping marble, Bayu granite and Longchang sandstone under high-temperature and high-pressure coupled true triaxial conditions were obtained. It shows that the peak strength, elastic modulus and fracture mode vary with rock types and temperatures. The mechanical property of Jinping marble increases with the increase of temperature in the tested temperature range, while Longchang sandstone shows a decreasing trend, and the change of Bayu granite is relatively small. The fracture mode of Jinping marble, Bayu granite Longchang sandstone at different temperatures is compressive-shear fracture. The results verify the reliability of the test system, and provides a new platform for understanding the mechanical properties of rocks of deep underground engineering with high temperatures.

Abstract:Abstract The movement pattern of abrasive particles plays an important role in the three-body abrasion of tribomaterials. If the attack angle of a particle is greater than the critical attack angle, the particle cuts the materials during sliding. However, when the particles are rolling, the materials are no longer subject to cutting, but to plastic deformation. Therefore, an evaluation of the movement pattern of abrasive particles would be very important for both theoretical research and practical use of three-body abrasion. Based on this idea, a new wear tester was developed which could be used to monitor directly and record the state of movement of the particles. At the same time the friction coefficient could be measured. Using this tester the rolling to sliding ratio could be evaluated statistically and the range of probability of cutting wear could be evaluated.

Abstract:An experimental method for measuring dynamic behavior of materials at high temperatures (up to 1600 degrees C) was proposed in this work. The experimental system includes a classical split Hopkinson pressure bar, a MoSi2 heating source for achieving high temperature, and two piston rods added to complement the double-synchronous assembled system. During the experiments, the specimen can be supported by asbestos and semi-Alumina ceramic tube. To estimate the thermal conduction of the tested specimen during the cold contact time (CCT), the time during which the hot specimen is in contact with the cold bars before being compressed, the CCT was measured experimentally based on an on-off circuit, and the finite element method (FEM) was also employed to calculate the thermal conduction of the tested specimen. High speed camera was employed to record images of the specimen during testing through a window in the heating furnace. For better understanding of the influence of oxidation of specimens, the system was also equipped with an argon supply system to prevent the specimen from oxidation at the high temperatures. To Verify the ability of the proposed method to operate at high temperatures, experiments were conducted on an TC4 alloy at test temperatures ranging from 20 to 1400 degrees C at the strain rate of 2000 s(-1), and on SiC at temperatures ranging from 20 to 1600 degrees C at the strain rate of 250 s(-1). Abstract:Serious wear phenomena occur in mining machinery under complex working conditions, and the wear of machine parts is primarily caused by the synergistic effect of adhesive wear, abrasive wear, corrosive wear, etc. However, the existing friction and wear testing equipment cannot be used to carry out wear tests under complex working conditions. To simultaneously meet the test requirements of adhesive wear, abrasive wear, and corrosive wear, a novel sliding friction and wear tester that can simulate complex working conditions was developed in the present research. The tester is composed of a loading mechanism, a speed-regulating mechanism, a corrosion chamber, and a control and display system. Wear tests of the middle plate of a scraper conveyor, a key equipment of coal mining, were carried out to verify the consistency and effectiveness of the tester. The test results were consistent, and those under the same test conditions were similar with a maximum standard deviation of 2.4 mg. The wear condition of the middle plate specimens was close to the actual wear condition of the middle plate. Moreover, the surfaces of the middle plate specimens after grinding exhibited obvious adhesive, abrasive, and corrosive wear characteristics, and the wear degrees of the specimens under the same test conditions were similar. The quality loss of the middle plate specimens was found to increase with the increase of coal gangue percentage, and the main wear mechanism was the synergistic action of abrasive, adhesive, and corrosive wear.

Abstract:The friction and wear behavior of cutting tool materials keeps an issue. In this study, an high temperature tribometre (UMT-2) was used to investigated the tribology properties and mechanism of two kinds of typical cutting tool materials. Commonly used cemented carbide (ZU5) and ceramic (AT) were chosen. The characteristics as to wear rate, friction coefficient and worn surface were studied. From the results, we found that the ceramic had better wear resistance than the cemented carbide. The friction coefficient of cemented carbide decreased with the increase of ambient temperature while the ceramic exhibited an inverse tendency. Finally, the probable wear mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:The tribological behavior and wear mechanism of pure tungsten carbide (WC) is researched in this study. In order to simulate the actual work condition, the experimental temperature increases from room temperature to 800°C under air and vacuum conditions, respectively. XRD, SEM and Raman laser surface scattering tests are used to investigate the worn surfaces of WC after different sliding friction tests. In this study, it is found that the atmosphere has a significant influence on the tribological properties of pure WC. In vacuum, pure WC can maintain phase stability at the temperature till to 800°C. However, the oxidation behavior have a significant effect on the tribological properties of tungsten carbide under air environment and the critical oxidizing temperature is between 500°C and 550°C.

Abstract:High temperature wear tests for 3Cr2W8V steel were performed by a pin-on-disk high temperature wear apparatus.The effects of quenching temperatures on wear resistance of 3Cr2W8V steel were studied.The compositions,images and structure of worn surfaces were analyzed using SEM,EDS and XRD.The wear mechanism was discussed.The results show that quenching temperature has apparent influences on wear rate of 3Cr2W8V steel.The 3Cr2W8V steel quenched at 1 050～1 150 ℃ exhibits lower wear rate.As quenched at lower or higher temperatures,the wear rate of the steel is marginally increased.The apparent deformation is found to exist in matrix under oxide film,accompanying with crack and oxide.The mechanism of high temperature wear for 3Cr2W8V steel is fatigue delamination of oxide.

Abstract:A reciprocating tribo-tester integrated with multi-functional components was developed for the purposes of studying the scuffing failure of piston ring/bore parts in engine. The apparatus, equipped with heating and temperature controlling devices, can measure the temperature of contact region using tiny thermocouple. Lubrication status can be indicated real time by the dynamic contact resistance between ring and bore using full-bridge circuit. Experiments show the designed tester with good stability to measure multiple parameters, can be used to study the mechanism of scuffing failure reliably.

Abstract:The high temperature oxidation and wear behaviors of Ti-35V-15Cr-0.3Si-0.1C fireproof titanium alloy were examined at 873 and 1073 K. The oxidation weight gain after oxidation at 1073 K for 100 h was significantly larger than that at 873 K. Based on the analyses of the oxidation reaction index and oxide layer, the oxidation process at 1073 K was mainly controlled by oxidation reaction at the interface between the substrate and oxide layer. Dry sliding wear tests were performed on a pin-on-disk tester in air conditions. The friction coefficient was smaller at 1073 K than that at 873 K, while the volume wear rate at 1073 K was larger due to formation of amount of oxides on the worn surface. When the wearing temperature increased from 873 to 1073 K, the wear mechanism underwent a transition from a combination of abrasive wear and oxidative wear to only oxidative wear.

Abstract:On the basis of induction heating, radiation heating and liquid nitrogen refrigeration, high-temperature, medium-temperature, normal-temperature and low-temperature heating/refrigeration furnaces were designed, respectively. An apparatus with a wide temperature range and high accuracy applied to test oxidation resistance of materials has been developed based on the thermogravimetric method and the heat transfer principle. The apparatus consists of four heating/cooling systems, a specimen fixture positioning unit, a laser positioning unit, vertical and horizontal moving guide rails, and a high-precision weighing balance. The apparatus, based on the thermogravimetric method, is able to test oxidation resistance of materials. In the test, the temperature range was -180 similar to 3000 degrees C (the highest temperature is determined by material properties). The temperature control accuracy was +/- 5 degrees C. The accuracy of on-line weighing was +/- 0.1 mg. The measurement uncertainty was 0.2 mg. Compared with other relevant devices, this apparatus has its own advantages: simple operation, wide heating/cooling temperature range, sufficient specimen heating, high sensitivity and precision, and short heating/cooling time. The experimental results show that the developed apparatus presented in this study not only can be used for isothermal thermogravimetric tests, but also for thermal cycling tests and multi-step oxidation tests. With the effective integration of multiple heating apparatus and refrigeration apparatus, the apparatus breaks through the limitations of the heating/cooling temperature range of the existing devices, accomplishes the high-precision oxidation resistance test of materials in a wide temperature range, and will play a great role in improving the research of materials.

Abstract:The abnormal local friction and wear phenomena usually generate during the service of the titanium alloy rotor /stator parts of the aero engine compressor under high temperature conditions. This phenomenon is the main cause of the occurrence of titanium fire failure and has great harm. In the present investigation the friction and wear behavior of the combustion resistant titanium alloy at high temperature was studied by finite element numerical simulation and experimental verification of the pin-on-disk model. Firstly, the geometrical model of the round bottom pin-on-disk contact was established. Then, the friction process was simulated by the Coulomb friction model. The ALE technique of ABAQUS was applied to move the contact nodes and update the grid. The finite element simulation of the ARCHARD wear model was realized. In order to deal with the increasing contact area, a simplify wear direction was proposed. Finally, the wear depth and volume was calculated and the wear law at 500 °C -900 °C was revealed. The results show that the wear process is gentle at the temperature of 500-700 °C, and the wear depth is within 0.08mm when the sliding distance reaches 1800m. When the temperature exceeds 800 °C, the wear rate increased sharply and the wear depth beyond 0.1mm, the FE result is consistent with the test results.

Abstract:The wear under high-temperature condition is one of the die failure patterns. Therefore, the wear resistance at high temperature is an important parameter for selecting die materials. In this work, the wear resistance of SDHA steel and 4Cr5Mo2V steel at 400 - 700°C were evaluated by a friction and wear tester. The wear behaviors and oxide types were investigated through a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the oxides on the worn surface are Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 at the test temperatures. The wear volume of two steels first decreases and then increases, reached the minimum value at 500 °C. Besides, SDHA steel has better wear resistance compared with 4Cr5Mo2V steel, which is attributed to the excellent hardness stability at high temperature. The coarse M7C3 carbides in 4Cr5Mo2V steel cause the peeling and delamination of oxide layer to damage wear resistance at 700 °C.

Abstract:Using a pin-on-dish wear tester friction and wear behavior of W9Gr4V high speed steel with different diameter and distance of concaves treated by laser texturing methods was investigated at 25 ,200 , 350 and 500 respectively. Semi-sphere-shaped concaves have three different diameters of 150,250,350 microns. Two concaves distance at rows is 250 microns. Distance between concaves at ranks has three classes of 150,250,350 microns. Result shows that samples with concaves exhibited lower wear resistance with increasing of temperature when temperature is ranging from ambient to 500 , and its wear increased slowly when temperature was lower than 200 , but its wear increased sharply when temperature was over 200 . Size and distribution of concaves did affect wear and it is found that the larger the concave diameter and space between two ranks, the lower the concaved sample's wear. Concaved samples exhibited lower friction coefficient with increasing of temperature. The results are helpful for investigating bionic texturing of high temperature anti-wear materials.
Numerical simulation on hard and brittle material grinding of complex surfaces parts

Abstract:A heat transmission model of hard and brittle material parts during surface grinding by diamond grinding wheel was established. Based on the finite element method, the grinding temperature distribution was calculated with the aid of ANSYS software, the distribution rule and changing course of temperature field were achieved. The research results showed that under current dry grinding parameters, the highest grinding temperature was 316 °C, and the heat was mainly distributed within the depth of 2 mm, which has no much effect on the surface; quality of the workpiece. The change rules of temperature in pace with the heat source and temperature change in different depth were found. The temperature field and course can be simulated based on finite element method to predict the grinding process, and the grinding parameters can be optimized. Thus the experiments cost and time can be reduced.
