Abstract:A novel process for the deposition of a hydroxyapatite (HA) coating on a smooth implant surface has been developed. Specimens were firstly subjected to electrodeposition at −1.8V (versus Ag/AgCl) in a mixed solution of 0.042M Ca(NO3)2·4H2O and 0.025M NH4H2PO4 at 85°C for 5s, and then post-treated in 1M NaOH solution for 30min. The experimental results showed the specimens prepared by the designed process to have better adhesion properties than those prepared by the traditional electrodeposition process.

Abstract:Features of electrophoretic deposition are introduced in this paper. The stability of ceramic suspensions, mechanisms of electrophoretic deposition and kinetic theory were discussed. Numerous applications of electrophoretic deposition were described, including production of coatings on solid substrates, porous ceramic structure, laminated and complex materials, films for solid oxide fuel cells and nanomaterials and nanostructures.

Abstract:Metallic implant, as a common repair material for orthopedics, has good biocompatibility and mechanical strength, but is unable to bring about osteogenesis. The implant surface will be greatly activated by modification with biologically functionalized coatings, and consequently come out with the desired osteointegration. Electrochemical deposition, as a simple, mild approach for coating preparation, has been utilized in bio-coatings. This paper reviewed recent development of biologically functionalized coatings prepared by electrochemical deposition, and introduced the mechanisms and the existing problems of the coatings. Also, the clinical application of electrochemical deposition aided biologically functionalized coatings was prospected.

Abstract:Al-Cr-Fe coatings have been widely used in the surface engineering field of materials, due to their excellent corrosion resistance to water vapor and fused salt deposits. In this study, a new two-step approach was developed to prepare Al-Cr-Fe coatings on surfaces of SUS430 stainless steels. First, the Cr/Al composite coatings were prepared by electrodepositing Cr from aqueous solution then electrodepositing Al from AlCl3-1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride (AlCl3-EMIC) ionic liquid on SUS430 stainless steel substrate. In the second, heat treatment of the Cr/Al composite coatings was carried out to acquire Al-Cr-Fe coatings. Effects of the thickness of Cr/Al composite coatings, the time and temperature of heat treatment on composition and phase structure of alloy layers were studied by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), backscattered electron (BSE), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The structure transformation process and formation mechanism of Al-Cr-Fe coatings were discussed.

Abstract:In this article,preparing technology and properties of the particulate reinforced metal matrix composites coatings are reviewed.Development history,current status,microstructures and mechanical properties of the composite coatings prepared by the electro-thermal explosion ultra-high speed spraying technology and the electro-brush plating technology are described in details.Finally,the engineering applications and the development prospects of those coatings are discussed.

Abstract:Ceramic coatings have been widely used in aerospace, mechanical and chemical engineering industries because of their excellent physical, chemical and mechanical properties. Accordingly, the constituents of ceramic coatings and their fabrication technologies are improved continuously. In this paper, current fabricating methods of ceramic coatings are introduced and the effect of fabrication process parameters on the general properties of the ceramic coatings is discussed. The current development trends of fabrication technologies toward the combination among the laser beam, electron beam, ion beam deposition and the other fabricating methods, and the trends of developing high quality coatings toward the multicomponent coatings, gradient composite coatings and the nanocomposite coatings are elucidated.

Abstract:Bio-ceramic hydroxyapatite (HA) coating has been commonly used to repair the bones or as the functionalized surface of bone substitutes due to its excellent biocompatibility, superior osteo-inductivity, and great corrosion resistance. Among many other methods for synthesizing HA coating, coating via the electrochemical deposition has a high degree of crystallinity and purity, which fits the nonlinear, complex, and rugged substrates. Furthermore, HA coating can be adjusted in terms of coating morphology, thickness, and chemical component via changing the parameters, such as electrolyte ion concentration, electrolyte composition, deposition current density, and deposition time, etc. Nevertheless, the properties of electrodeposited HA coating highly pertain to the bubbles generated by water electrolysis on the substrate surface as well as the concentration polarization of electrolyte ions near the cathode during the electrodeposition process. In this study, the critical factors and mechanisms of HA coating using the electrochemical deposition method are comprehensively evaluated, thereby examining the effects of parameter optimization (i.e., current mode, ultrasonic treatment, and postprocessing). Finally, the influences of ion substitution and HA composite coating on the surface structure and properties of the HA-based coatings are also discussed.

Abstract:Added arc glow discharge method is to deposit Cu metal electrode on ferrite ceramic chips in a vacuum atmosphere. A lot of phenomena, different from usual printing silver electrode method occurred during the deposition, as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the microstructure of electrode joints and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Interfacial migration and diffusion occur within the metal layer and the ceramic matrix, respectively. The effect of different deposition procedures on the electrical and magnetic properties of the ceramic samples (chip and toroidal) was also investigated. The results show that, through an optimized procedure, the joint quality of deposited Cu electrodes and the properties of the relative components can significantly improved.

Abstract:In recent years, alloy and alloy-ceramic coatings have gained a considerable attention owing to their favorable physicochemical and technological properties. In this review, we investigate Ni, NiCo alloy and NiCo–ceramic composite coatings prepared by electrodeposition. Electrodeposition is a versatile tool and cost-effective electrochemical method used to produce high quality metal coatings. Surface finish and tribological properties of the coatings can be further improved by the addition of suitable agents and control of deposition operating conditions. In this review, Ni, NiCo alloy and NiCo–ceramic composite coatings prepared by electrodeposition are reviewed by critically evaluating previous researches. The use of the coatings and their potential for future research and development are discussed.

Abstract:In the present study, Al2O3 (insulator), ZrO2 (ionic conductor) and (ZnO semiconductor) coatings were prepared by cathode plasma electrolytic deposition (CPED) method on stainless steel substrates. The surface morphologies and cross sections of the coatings were analyzed. The contributions to the electric current densities during the CPED process were studied. A double dielectric layers model was proposed to systematically study the effect of the electrical conductivities on the coating structures. The results showed that the coating structures and the electrical breakdown mechanism were closely related with the electrical conductivities of the coatings and the gas film. The different structures of the coatings can be attributed to the electric conductivity difference between the coatings and the gas film.

Abstract:The main goal of this research is to prepare Ni-Zr composite coatings with different amounts of Zr microparticles by using electrodeposition technology. Different characterization techniques including X-ray diffractometer (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersive Xray Spectroscopy (EDX) were used to investigate the effects of Zr micro-particle contents on the surface morphology, texture, grain size, residual stress and hardness of the Ni-Zr composite coatings. The electrochemical impedance and potentiodynamic polarization measurements were also used to examine the corrosion resistance. As the Zr contents in the Ni-Zr composite coating increased, the (200) texture changed to the (111) texture, the grain size decreased, the residual stress and hardness increased. The anti-corrosion properties of the Ni-Zr composite coatings could be linked to several reasons such as the amount of Zr micro-particles in the deposits, a decrease in grain size, and a change in the texture of the deposits. Abstract:The research progress of multifuctional ceramic coatings formed by microarc oxidation (MAO) technique on metals are reviewed from the views of scientific mechanism, technological design fabrication and applicable performance. The growth phenomenon and formation mechanism of the MAO coating are first introduced. The effects of key process parameters (such as electrolyte composition and electrical parameters) and chemical composition of metal substrate on the coating growth and interface bonding strength are discussed. The strategies on how to fabricate the multifuctional ceramic coatings including wear-resistance, anti-corrosion, thermal protection, dielectric, catalysis and biological performances by tailioring the composition and structure of coatings are extensively reviewed. Finally, the challenges of MAO technique are figured out, and the special attention is dedicated to future developing trends in the view of basic principles, coating processes and engineering applications.

Abstract:Due to the unique properties of titanium (Ti) and its alloys, it has a particularly wide range of applications in aerospace, automotive, medical and other fields. However, the problems of low surface hardness, high friction coefficient and low wear resistance of Ti alloys limit its development to a certain extent. The destruction of Ti and its alloys often occurs on the surface of materials such as wear damage, corrosion, and oxidation resistance. Therefore, the exploration and application of surface strengthening technology is particularly important. The cathodic plasma electrolytic deposition (CPED) technology, as a surface modification technology, can achieve better adhesion and facilitate the material to achieve better comprehensive performance. This paper briefly introduces the basic concepts, principles and development progress of CPED. Starting from the preparation of ceramic coatings, metal coatings, diamond-like carbon films and composite coatings, it summarizes the application of CPED in Ti and its alloys. Applications in alloys to improve thermal oxidation resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and film-based adhesion. At the end, its development in the new era environment is prospected.

Abstract:Plasma electrochemical surface ceramic coating (PECC) is an enhanced electrochemistry technique accomplished by means of plasma arc discharge in an electrolyte medium obtain coating structures on valve-metal surfaces. Oxide films of titanium obtained by PECC in the electrolyte of sodium phosphate were investigated. The film was composed mainly of TiO2 in the form of anatase and rutile and enriched with Na and P elements on their surfaces. Their apatite-inducing ability was also evaluated in a simulated body fluid (SBF). When immersed in SBF for over 30 days, an oriented hydroxy-carbonate-apatite was induced on the surface of the films, which suggests the PECC-treated titanium has the promising positive biological response.
