Abstract:Background For dental implants, early infection and peri-implantitis after implant restoration are major reasons for implant failure. Plaque biofilm formation is the initiator for implant-related infection. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a new antibacterial implant materials or treatment methods. Aim/Hypothesis In this study, Sr- and Zn- incorporated micro nano-structured titanium surface with nanorods (MNT-Sr Zn) was fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal process, aiming to improve osseointegration and reduce implant failure caused by implant-related infection and broaden new ideas for the future research Material and Methods The Mod Ti surfaces were used as a control. The characterization of different surfaces was detected by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectra (EDS) detector, x-ray diffractometer (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Meanwhile, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was selected to evaluate antibacterial properties through Live Dead Staining and watching the adhesive bacterial morphology under FE-SEM. What's more, rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) were cultured on the surfaces to detect their early osteogenic properties, like the alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity and the expressions of osteogenesis related genes. Results The results confirmed that nanorod-like particles with a diameter of about 30-50 nm of MNT-Sr Zn composed of well-crystallized ZnO and SrTiO3 phases. In the EDS spectra, the elements of Zn and Sr were evenly distributed, and approximately 1.49 ± 0.16 wt% and 21.69 ± 2.74 wt% respectively. Besides, the release of Sr2+ and Zn2+ was a controlled and long-term process. More importantly, Zn-containing nanorod-like particles and the morphology could work together, slightly decreasing adhesion of S. aureus but increasing the proportion of dead cells, thus inhibiting subsequent biofilm formation, compared with the controlled group. In addition to this, MNT-Sr Zn could enhance the osteogenic differentiation via the upregulation of the transcription of osteogenic related genes and the expression of ALP in vitro. Conclusion and Clinical Implications This research provides a new surface modification method on titanium substrate for multi-functional implant material development. Due to the co-doping of Sr and Zn in the coating, biomechanical stability, antibacterial capability and early osteogenic inductive effect are enhanced, which has the potential to be applied in dental implantation in the future.

Abstract:Bioactive fixation between bone substitutes and their surrounding tissues is mostly studied in the nearest decade. The key of bioactive fixation is the high bioactivity of the biomaterials. To coat the titanium surface with a layer of bioceramics through physical deposition, solgel, electrochemical deposition and biomimetic process etc, promotes the bioactivity of titanium effectively. Another approach to obtain a bioactive titanium surface is the chemical modification of titanium with sodium hydroxygen or hydrogen peroxide solutions to induce titanium dioxide films on the surface. The titanium dioxide films derived by the surface modification should be abundant in Ti-OH functional groups, and also, in crystalline structure, which may effectively induce epitaxial growth of hydroxylapatite nuclei. This paper provides a brief review of various techniques and their corresponding mechanisms for obtaining a titanium surface with bioactivity.
Surface Modification of Titanium by Hydroxyapatite/CaSiO3/Chitosan Porous Bioceramic Coating

Abstract:In this study, hydroxyapatite(HA)-CaSiO3-chitosan(CS) composite bioceramic coating was applied to the surfaces of pure titanium by using the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. The mechanism of EPD of HA/CaSiO3/CS composites is discussed. The composite bioceramic coating was followed by heat treatments in a controlled atmosphere to made coatings porous and enhance their mechanical properties due to CS and CaSiO3 particles. The composition, structure, and surface morphology of these coatings are characterized through fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), Xraydiffraction(XRD), field emission scanning elec-tronmicroscopy(SEM) and transmission electron microscope(TEM). Our results confirmed that this approach is especially attractive for the fabrication of porous bioceramic coatings.The adhesive force between the HA/CaSiO3 porous coatings and pure titanium is approximately 26.6 MPa. The porous HA/CaSiO3 coatings provide improved bioactivity and biocompatibility of pure titanium in the simulated body fluid solution.

Abstract:Due to the unique properties of titanium (Ti) and its alloys, it has a particularly wide range of applications in aerospace, automotive, medical and other fields. However, the problems of low surface hardness, high friction coefficient and low wear resistance of Ti alloys limit its development to a certain extent. The destruction of Ti and its alloys often occurs on the surface of materials such as wear damage, corrosion, and oxidation resistance. Therefore, the exploration and application of surface strengthening technology is particularly important. The cathodic plasma electrolytic deposition (CPED) technology, as a surface modification technology, can achieve better adhesion and facilitate the material to achieve better comprehensive performance. This paper briefly introduces the basic concepts, principles and development progress of CPED. Starting from the preparation of ceramic coatings, metal coatings, diamond-like carbon films and composite coatings, it summarizes the application of CPED in Ti and its alloys. Applications in alloys to improve thermal oxidation resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and film-based adhesion. At the end, its development in the new era environment is prospected.
Research Progress in Electrospark Deposition Coatings on Titanium Alloy Surfaces: A Short Review

Abstract:The development process of electrospark deposition (ESD) technology is reviewed, and the principles and differences of ESD technology are discussed in this review. Based on the research status regarding the ESD of titanium alloys, the promotion effect of ESD technology on wear resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance at high temperatures, and the biocompatibility of titanium alloys was elaborated on. For example, with the use of ESD technology to prepare Ti–Al, TiN, Ni–Cr, and other hardening coatings with high hardness, the maximum hardness of the deposited layer is six times higher than that of the substrate material, which greatly reduces the loss of the material surface in the process of friction in service, and has a high wear–resistance effect. The preparation of a single–phase lamellar coating is more beneficial for improving the oxidation resistance of the substrate. Carbide and a nano–porous coating can effectively enhance the bone integration ability of implants and promote biocompatibility. The application of ESD technology in the surface modification of titanium alloys is reviewed in detail. Finally, the development direction of ESD technology for titanium alloys is proposed.

Fabrication and evaluation of porous coatings doped with bioactive elements on titanium surfaces

Abstract:Objective: Although pure titanium (PT) and its alloys exhibit excellent mechanical properties, they lack biological activity as implants. The purpose of this study was to improve the biological activity of titanium implants through surface modification. Materials and methods: Titanium was processed into titanium discs, where the titanium discs served as anodes and stainless steel served as cathodes, and a copper- and cobalt-doped porous coating [pure titanium model (PTM)] was prepared on the surface of titanium via plasma electrolytic oxidation. The surface characteristics of the coating were evaluated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and profilometry. The corrosion resistance of PTM was evaluated with an electrochemical workstation. The biocompatibility and bioactivity of coated bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were evaluated through in vitro cell experiments. Results: A copper- and cobalt-doped porous coating was successfully prepared on the surface of titanium, and the doping of copper and cobalt did not change the surface topography of the coating. The porous coating increased the surface roughness of titanium and improved its resistance to corrosion. In addition, the porous coating doped with copper and cobalt promoted the adhesion and spreading of BMSCs. Conclusions: A porous coating doped with copper and cobalt was prepared on the surface of titanium through plasma electrolytic oxidation. The coating not only improved the roughness and corrosion resistance of titanium but also exhibited good biological activity.
Preparation and biological evaluation of Nano-HA coating on tatinium surfaces

Abstract:Objective This study applied an electrochemical technology to prepare a nano-hydroxyapatite(nano-HA) coating and evaluated the effects of the nano-HA coating on osteoblast biological ability.Methods Titanium plates were roughened.Nano-HA coatings were deposited by the electrochemical technology.FSEM,FTIR and XRD analysis were used to observe topography and chemical composition of coatings.The biological activity was evaluated by the BMSCs cell culture.Results FSEM observation showed the rod-like crystals uniformity covered the porous surfaces,the diameter of which was 70～80nm.XRD and FTIR analysis showed this coating consisted of HA.Nano-HA coatings improved expression of ALP and OC.Conclusion Nano-HA coatings were deposited on rough titanium surfaces by the electrochemical technology and improved BMSCs into osteoblast.

Abstract:Plasma electrochemical surface ceramic coating (PECC) is an enhanced electrochemistry technique accomplished by means of plasma arc discharge in an electrolyte medium obtain coating structures on valve-metal surfaces. Oxide films of titanium obtained by PECC in the electrolyte of sodium phosphate were investigated. The film was composed mainly of TiO2 in the form of anatase and rutile and enriched with Na and P elements on their surfaces. Their apatite-inducing ability was also evaluated in a simulated body fluid (SBF). When immersed in SBF for over 30 days, an oriented hydroxy-carbonate-apatite was induced on the surface of the films, which suggests the PECC-treated titanium has the promising positive biological response.

Abstract:Titanium implants have the risk of loosening or even failure, especially the force generated by chewing is not conducive to the use of conventional titanium bioactive coatings in the oral environment. In this work, a BCZT/TiO 2 bio-piezoelectric coating was prepared on titanium surface. The force generated by chewing is cleverly converted into the piezoelectric charge on the coating surface, and the formation of the combination of implant and alveolar bone is accelerated by its promoting effect on bone repair. The formation mechanism of the coating was studied. The BCZT/TiO 2 bio-piezoelectric coating showed good piezoelectric properties. The calcium deposition results of BCZT/TiO 2 coating with static, physiological loading and low-frequency ultrasonic conditions were compared. Interestingly, the effect of polarized BCZT/TiO 2 coating applied with low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on promoting calcium deposition was similar to that applied with physiological loading, suggesting that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound has the potential to stimulate piezoelectric effects. In addition, the BCZT/TiO 2 coating was non-toxic and has good biocompatibility and bioactivity. The polarized BCZT/TiO 2 coating showed the best proliferation results, and the osteoblast adhesion morphology on the coating surface was extended. The results provide data support for the application of titanium bio-piezoelectric coating on dental implants.

Abstract:Bioactive coatings play a crucial role in enhancing the osseointegration of titanium implants for bone repair. Electrodeposition offers a versatile and efficient technique to deposit uniform coatings onto titanium surfaces, endowing implants with antibacterial properties, controlled drug release, enhanced osteoblast adhesion, and even smart responsiveness. This review summarizes the recent advancements in bioactive coatings for titanium implants used in bone repair, focusing on various electrodeposition strategies based on material-structure synergy. Firstly, it outlines different titanium implant materials and bioactive coating materials suitable for bone repair. Then, it introduces various electrodeposition methods, including electrophoretic deposition, anodization, micro-arc oxidation, electrochemical etching, electrochemical polymerization, and electrochemical deposition, discussing their applications in antibacterial, osteogenic, drug delivery, and smart responsiveness. Finally, it discusses the challenges encountered in the electrodeposition of coatings for titanium implants in bone repair and potential solutions.

Abstract:This study presents a dipcasting method that can deposit both porous and dense bioceramic coatings onto 3D Ti-mesh made from commercially pure Ti-mesh for surgical applications. First, a dense bioglass coating was deposited onto the 3D Ti-mesh, which is to seal off the Ti-mesh. Second, a microporous HA/bioglass coating was deposited on top of the dense bioglass coating, which is to promote bone regeneration into the 3D Ti-mesh. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to analyze the bioceramic coatings and cross-sectional microstructures. Vickers microhardness across the interface between bioceramic coating and Ti-substrate was measured.

Abstract:Compared with stainless steel and Co–Cr‐based alloys, Ti and its alloys are widely used as biomedical implants due to many fascinating properties, such as superior mechanical properties, strong corrosion resistance, and excellent biocompatibility. After briefly introducing several most commonly used biomedical materials, this article reviews the recent development in Ti alloys and their biomedical applications, especially the low‐modulus β‐type Ti alloys and their design methods. This review also systemically investigates the recently attractive progress in preparation of biomedical Ti alloys, including additive manufacturing, porous powder metallurgy, and severe plastic deformation, applied in the manufacturing and the influenced microstructures and properties. Nevertheless, there are still some problems with the long‐term performance of Ti alloys, and therefore several surface modification methods are reviewed to further improve their biological activity, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. Finally, the biocompatibility of Ti and its alloys is concluded. Summarizing the findings from literature, future prediction is also conducted. This paper reviews the recent development in Ti alloys and their biomedical applications, including additive manufacturing, porous powder metallurgy, and severe plastic deformation applied in the manufacturing and the influenced microstructures and properties. Nevertheless, some problems exist in long‐term performance of Ti alloys. Abstract:Hydroxyapatite is one of the best bioceramics with the excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity,but its mechanical properties of low strength and poor toughness limit its wide applications.Medical titanium and its alloys have good mechanical properties,but the wear resistance is poor.Medical titanium and its alloys belong to biological inert materials,and it interlocks mechanically with bones.Fabrication of hydroxyapatite bioceramic coatings on medical titanium is a domestic and foreign hot research topic at present,which has the important theoretical and practical significance.This paper reviews the research status and progress of the synthetic methods of the hydroxyapatite coating on medical titanium,and makes a prospect of the development of the technology and theory.

Abstract:Titanium and titanium alloys are receiving widespread attention due to their excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, corrosion resistances, and biocompatibilities. However, titanium metal itself is biologically inert in physiological environments, and after implantation, it is surrounded by a layer of encapsulating fibrous membrane, making it difficult to form solid bonds with the tissue. Plasma electrolytic oxidation is a new technology used to prepare bioactive porous ceramic membranes on the surfaces of titanium and titanium alloys. It has application prospects for biomimetic surface modifications of titanium alloys. In this study, a cobalt, strontium and fluorine codoped oxide film (TAM-CSF) was prepared on a titanium surface via plasma electrolytic oxidation. The surface characteristics of the film were evaluated with field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy spectrum analyses, atomic force microscopy, profilometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, the corrosion performance of the material was evaluated with an electrochemical workstation. The biocompatibility and bioactivity of the film were tested with in vitro cell experiments. The results showed that the TAM-CSF on the titanium surface had a porous morphology, and the CSF was uniformly doped on the film surface. TAM-CSF improved the surface roughness of the titanium. This film exhibited good biocompatibility and promoted the extension and proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells. It was possible to prepare TAM-CSF on titanium surfaces via plasma electrolytic oxidation. The film exhibited a good morphology and good biological activity and has clinical application prospects.

Abstract:Titanium and titanium alloys have widely been used in biomedical applications as main substitutes for hard human tissues. To better meet the needs of safety, comfort, and durability of titanium and titanium alloys after implantation in the human body, the surface modification treatment of titanium and titanium alloys has become a research hotspot. In this review, based on the basic properties and existing problems of titanium and titanium alloys, the methods of surface modification for titanium and titanium alloys are introduced to improve their mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and bacteriostatic/antibacterial properties. Furthermore, the current challenges and prospects have been presented in this paper.

Abstract:Titanium implants are surface-modified to achieve bioactivity and often antibacterial properties. Such surface coatings may increase corrosion degradation and be weakly attached to the substrate. In the present research, biodegradable composite coatings, investigated so far as smart environment-sensitive, slowly releasing silver to the implant neighborhood, were produced as a combination of chitosan (CS) with Eudragit E 100 (EE100) or poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) polymers incorporating mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs). Such coatings were designed to positively affect corrosion resistance, bioactivity in vitro , and the bonding to the surface. The coating was obtained in a single electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process on the surface of chemically etched grade 2 titanium. The deposition was carried out using an ethanol-based suspension for 5 min at 60 V. Suspension stability was assessed through the quantification of zeta potential. The fabricated coatings underwent microstructural analysis, chemical composition profiling, surface roughness measurement, wettability assessment, thickness determination, evaluation of corrosion resistance, and investigation of their adherence to metallic substrates. Additionally, an immersion test extending up to 14 days was employed to assess the coatings' capacity for calcium phosphate formation. The resulting coatings tightly covered the metallic substrate; the CS/EE100/MBGNs coating exhibited superior uniformity, which can be attributed to the increased stability of this suspension, indicated by a higher zeta potential value. The deposited MBGNs showed a diameter of <100 nm. The prepared coatings have contributed to improved corrosion resistance of the system and facilitated the deposition of calcium phosphates. All investigated surfaces showed hydrophilic properties. Substrate-coating adhesion was notably enhanced for the CS/EE100/MBGNs coating. The proposed coatings, after in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity studies, can successfully be applied on long-term load-bearing titanium bone implants.

Abstract:Powder mixed-EDM is a newly emerging proposed manufacturing process which can simultaneously shape and coat the surface of conductive materials. Transformation of machined surface is occurred through melting and chemical reactions of the added powders, tools materials and dielectric fluid due to elevated temperature generation during the operation. Though the biomaterials such as titanium alloy, magnesium, 316 L SS and Co-Cr alloy attribute to higher mechanical strength, corrosion and wear resistance, and enough biocompatibility, these are limited to apply directly because of releasing the toxic elements and having inferior biological responses. Surfaces of bio-implants made from these biomaterials are therefore protected using bioactive and biocompatible coating. Hydroxyapatite is a bioceramic that possesses bone like element composition and excellent biocompatibility. The PM-EDM process with hydroxyapatite can enhance not only adhesion strength and roughness but also biocompatibility of the treated surface. It is proposed in this paper that carbide and oxide coating formation can improve the microhardness, bonding strength and roughness of surface of the substrates. This study comprehensively reports the current status of adhesion and surface coarseness of bio-ceramics based coating through PM-EDM process. A comparative critical analysis of employing bio-ceramic powder using various deposition techniques is presented in this review.
