Abstract:The non-equilibrium phase transitions of vortex matter in type II superconductor are studied within three-dimension anisotropic XY model by resistively-shunted junction(RSJ) dynamics.It is found that the static vortex glass phase can be transformed into the moving vortex glass in the presence of external current.At low temperature,the system undergoes three phase transitions.With the increase of the current,from the moving vortex glass,the system is first driven to the moving Bragg glass,then to the moving Smectic,and finally melts to the moving liquid.

Abstract:Large-scale simulations on the three-dimensional (3D) frustrated anisotropic XY model have been performed to study the nonequilibrium phase transitions of vortex matter in weak random pinning potential in layered superconductors. The first-order phase transition from the moving Bragg glass to the moving smectic is clarified, based on thermodynamic quantities. A washboard noise is observed in the moving Bragg glass in 3D simulations for the first time. It is found that the activation of the vortex loops plays the dominant role in the dynamical melting at high drive.

Abstract:Starting from a two-dimensional model approximating the dynamics of cubic-to-tetragonal and tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transformations in shape memory materials, it is shown that the Falk model in the one dimensional case is a special case of the formulated model. Computational experiments based on a conservative difference scheme are carried out to analyse thermomechanical wave interactions in a rod with shape memory effect.

Abstract:The authors study the large-time behaviour of global smooth solutions to initial-boundary value problems for the system of one-dimensional nonlinear thermoviscoelasticity. It is found that the solution may possess phase transition phenomena when the material is nor, monotone, and the solution may decay to a stable state for the monotone case.

Abstract:Evolution of a phase transition system is an important topic with many applications. The crucial difficulty lies in the instability of ellipticity. In this paper, we briefly discuss two types of approaches to resolve this difficulty, i.e. to employ generalized entropy conditions, or to include dissipation mechanisms. For the latter one, we review some recent progresses for systems with both high-order and low-order dissipations. Theoretical and numerical investigations reveal the mechanism and the complex pattern evolving from the nonlinear interaction between dissipations and ellipticity.

Abstract:Phase transition in the aperiodic quantum Ising models were studied, in which the transverse magnetic fields are uniform and the couplings are arranged according to the aperiodic sequences that are generated by two types of two-tile inflation rules with initial condition {ApBq}: A → A′=Am11Bm12, B →B′=Am21Bm22, m12, m21≠0, and A → A′=Am11Bm12, B → B′=Bm21Am22, m12, m22≠0. When the inflation rules have the Pisot–Vijayaraghavan (PV) property in number theory, the generated aperiodic systems undergo phase transition at the critical points. When the inflation rules do not have the PV property, it is found that only by changing the initial conditions, the inflation rules can produce aperiodic systems exhibiting phase transition as well as aperiodic systems which do not exhibit any phase transition.

Abstract:Diffusive nature of thermal transportation fundamentally restricts topological characteristics due to the absence of a sufficient parametric space with complex dimensionalities. Here, we create an orthogonal advection space with two advective pairs to reveal the unexplored topological transitions in thermal material. We demonstrate four types of configurable thermal phases, including the nontrivial dynamic-equilibrium distribution, nonchiral steplike π-phase transition, and another two trivial profiles related to the anti-parity-time symmetry nature. Our findings provide a recipe for realizing a topologically robust thermal system under arbitrary perturbations.

Abstract:This article is concerned with an initial–boundary value problem for an elliptic–parabolic coupled system arising in martensitic phase transition theory of elastically deformable solid materials, e.g., steel. This model was proposed in Alber and Zhu (2007) [4], and investigated in Alber and Zhu (2006) [3] the existence of weak solutions which are defined in a standard way, however the key technique used in Alber and Zhu (2006) [3] is not applicable to multi-dimensional problem. One of the motivations of this study is to solve this multi-dimensional problem, and another is to investigate the sharp interface limits. Thus we define weak solutions in a way, which is different from Alber and Zhu (2006) [3], by using the notion of viscosity solution. We do prove successfully the existence of weak solutions in this sense for one-dimensional problem, yet the multi-dimensional problem is still open.

Abstract:Nonlinear phenomena such as instability, hysteresis and complicated microstructures are often observed during solid-solid phase transitions. Due to the lack of stability, the solution of the dynamical equations become to be very difficult. Take the martensitic transformation in shape memory alloys as an example, the Young's modulus becomes negative during the phase transition process. This makes the classical dynamical equation ill-posed and can not be solved directly. Certain kind of regularization is required. The observation of hysteresis and microsturctures implies also that the classical elastic theory cannot apply any more. New energy terms have to be added to characterize these new phenomena.Within the frame of nonlinear elasticity, the strain gradient dependent interfacial energy and displacement dependent inhomogeneity energy were considered. One dimensional dynamical model was then obtained by means of the variational principle. The additional higher order term improves very strongly the mathematical properties of the equation. Its numerical simulation becomes possible. Our numerical results indicate that both the lack of stability and the microstructures of phase transitions can be simulated quite well by the present model.

Abstract:The full quasistatic thermomechanical system of PDEs, describing water diffusion with the possibility of freezing and melting in a visco-elasto-plastic porous solid, is studied in detail under the hypothesis that the pressure-saturation hysteresis relation is given in terms of the Preisach hysteresis operator. The resulting system of balance equations for mass, momentum, and energy coupled with the phase dynamics equation is shown to admit a global solution under general assumptions on the data.

Abstract:Isothermal compressible two-phase flows with and without phase transition are modeled, employing Darcy's and/or Forchheimer's law for the velocity field. It is shown that the resulting systems are thermodynamically consistent in the sense that the available energy is a strict Lyapunov functional. In both cases, the equilibria are identified and their thermodynamical stability is investigated by means of a variational approach. It is shown that the problems are well-posed in an $L_p$-setting and generate local semiflows in the proper state manifolds. It is further shown that a non-degenerate equilibrium is dynamically stable in the natural state manifold if and only if it is thermodynamically stable. Finally, it is shown that a solution which does not develop singularities exists globally and converges to an equilibrium in the state manifold.

Abstract:Thermoelastic martensitic transformations in shape memory alloys can be modeled on the basis of nonlinear elastic theory. Microstructures of fine phase mixtures are local energy minimizers of the total energy. Using a one-dimensional effective model, we have shown that such microstructures are inhomogeneous solutions of the nonlinear Euler–Lagrange equation and can appear upon loading or unloading to certain critical conditions, the bifurcation conditions. A hybrid numerical method is utilized to calculate the inhomogeneous solutions with a large number of interfaces. The characteristics of the solutions are clarified by three parameters: the number of interfaces, the interface thickness, and the oscillating amplitude. Approximated analytical expressions are obtained for the interface and inhomogeneity energies through the numerical solutions.

Abstract:The essence of fluid phase transition is the jump of physical properties distinctly induced by shock waves in the hard-sphere model. Due to the strong impact of the wave, the internal freedoms of molecules are stimulated, releasing tremendous energy that commonly triggers the phase transition. Conversely, typical thermal and dynamic jumps can be described by the Rankine–Hugoniot conditions based on the Euler equation. In the theoretical simulation, the initial density and rotational freedoms of molecules are directly regarded as the primary factors to affect processes of phase transition. However, the influence of vibrational freedom in molecules has not been discussed yet. As the increasing temperature can gradually excite the affection of vibrational freedom, it is unwise to assume that the temperature element is constant in the theory. What would be a suitable model that accurately reflects the relationship between temperature and affection from vibrational freedom? The non-limited model has been courageously attempted with the temperature range from T0 to 6T0 (T0 is unperturbed temperature). We have found that the vibrational freedom can have a great effect on properties during phase transition processes.

Non-isothermal diffuse interface model for phase transition and interface evolution

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a thermodynamically consistent non-isothermal diffuse interface model for phase transition and interface evolution involving heat transfer. This model is constructed by integrating concepts from classical irreversible thermodynamics with the energetic variational approach. By making specific assumptions about the kinematics of the temperature, we derive a non-isothermal Allen-Cahn equation. Through both asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations, we demonstrate that in the sharp interface limit, the non-isothermal Allen-Cahn equation converges to a two-phase Stefan-like problem, under a certain scaling of the melting/freezing energy. In this regime, the motion of the liquid-solid interface and the temperature interface coincide and are governed by the mean curvature, at least for a short time. The result provides a justification for the classical Stefan problem within a certain physical regime.

Abstract:Both one-way and two-way shape memory effects induced by crystallization and melting transitions have been recently demonstrated in several semi-crystalline polymers. The paper proposes a novel thermoviscoelastic phase transition model accounting for the underlying mechanisms of the material. The nonlinear Adam-Gibbs model of structural relaxation and a modified Eying model of viscous flow are incorporated to characterize the thermomechanical behaviors of the amorphous phase. Another main feature of the model lies in the characterization of the formation and melting of the crystalline phase based on a theory of multiple natural configurations. Comparisons with uniaxial shape memory experiments show that the model can well reproduce the stress-strain-temperature responses in different loading conditions.

Abstract:Extended thermodynamics commonly uses polynomial moments to model non-equilibrium transportation, but faces a crisis due to sub-shocks, which are anomalous discontinuities in gas properties when predicting shock waves. The cause of sub-shocks is still unclear, challenging the validity of extended thermodynamics. This paper reveals, for the first time, that sub-shocks arise from intrinsic limitations of polynomials leading to a discontinuous phase transition. Therefore extended thermodynamics necessitates alternative moments beyond polynomials to avoid sub-shocks.

Abstract:We present a non-isothermal mesoscopic model for investigation of the phase transition dynamics of thermoresponsive polymers. Since this model conserves energy in the simulations, it is able to correctly capture not only the transient behavior of polymer precipitation from solvent, but also the energy variation associated with the phase transition process. Simulations provide dynamic details of the thermally induced phase transition and confirm two different mechanisms dominating the phase transition dynamics. A shift of endothermic peak with concentration is observed and the underlying mechanism is explored.

Abstract:Inspired by Conti and Zanzotto \cite{Conti2004A}, we reformulate a simple variational model for reconstructive phase transitions in crystals arising in continuum mechanics in the framework of Landau's theory of phase transition(with slight modification). We provide and prove that this class of modular invariant functions admit exactly hexagonal-square lattices minimizers without passing through rhombic lattices, being the first rigorous result in this regard. Our result gives an affirmative answer to an open problem by in \cite{Conti2004A}. In addition, our result has independent interest from number theory.

Abstract:Within the framework of the mean-field theory, we study the phase transitions of transverse spin-1/2 Ising ferroelectric superlattices formed from two alternating materials. By the transfer matrix method, we derive a nonlinear equation for the phase transition temperature of the superlattice with arbitrary layer-number in one period and arbitrary exchange constants. The dependence of the transition temperature on the layer-number and the interface exchange constant was calculated numerically. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
