Abstract:HFC161 is an environmentally friendly refrigerant which is not destructive to the ozone layer and has a very low global warming potential. It has a high cooling capacity and an excellent energy efficiency, offering tangible economic and social benefits. But this refrigerant is flammable if used alone. Refrigerant mixtures with HFC161 are considered to be new and promising alternative refrigerants. We proposed and studied a series of refrigerant mixtures of HFC161. In this paper, we will report vapor pressure and P-V-T behavior of pure HFC161, vapor-tiquid equilibrium of HFC161 mixtures, cycle performance of the refrigerant mixtures and some results of the flammable behaviors of the new refrigerant mixtures. The studies show that the proposed new mixtures have great potential to be as excellent refrigerants. But there are still some key technology barriers to be surmounted before using such refrigerants, such as refrigerant-lubricant compatibility, materials compatibility and other issues.

Abstract:An experimental apparatus for testing the explosion limits of flammable refrigerants was established following the standard of American Society for Testing Materials(ASTM) E681-01.Factors affecting the explosion limits of refrigerants were analyzed.Experimental results show that the physical characteristics of HFC-161/125/32 are similar to those of HCFC-22,its ozone depleting potential(ODP) is zero,and its global warming potential(GWP) is smaller than that of HCFC-22,therefore the new refrigerant HFC-161/125/32 can be considered as a promising alternative refrigerant to HCFC-22.The explosion limits of the flammable binary refrigerants of HFC-161/125/32 systems were tested.Based on the experimental data,the critical flammability line of the mixtures HFC-161/125/32 was plotted.Analysis result shows the importance of explosion limits to the safety of flammable refrigerants in manufacture and application.

Abstract:The research status on refrigerant substitute for the freeze and cold storage system is reviewed.Based on this,a new ternary non-azeotropic mixture of HFC-161/HFC-125/HFC-143a(15/45/40) as a promising mixed refrigerant to HFC-404A is presented.The ODP of the new refrigerant is zero and its basic thermodynamic properties are similar to those of HFC-404A,and its GWP is much smaller than that of R507A or HFC-404A.The cycle performance between the new mixture refrigerant and HFC-404A is theoretically analyzed and compared.The results show that the cycle performance and environmental performance of the new mixture refrigerant are better than those of HFC-404A.The new mixture refrigerant may be a promising alternative refrigerant for HFC-404A.

Abstract:HFO-1336mzz-Z with low global warming potential (GWP) was considered as a promising alternative of HCFC-123, HFC-245fa in air conditioning (AC) and heat pump (HP), respectively. In order to understand the operation performances of HFO-1336mzz-Z and HCFC-123, HFC-245fa in different working conditions, an experimental setup for testing the refrigeration cycle performance was built. The cycle performances of HFO-1336mzz-Z and HCFC-123 in AC conditions, HFO-1336mzz-Z and HFC-245fa in HP conditions were investigated by experiment. It was found in AC conditions, the discharge temperatures for the systems with HFO-1336mzz-Z and HCFC-123 were lower than 115 °C, the cooling capacity of the system with HFO-1336mzz-Z was 27% less than that with HCFC-123 at least, and the coefficient of performance (COP) of the system with HFO-1336mzz-Z was 0.1 lower than that with HCFC-123; in HP conditions, the discharge temperature with HFO-1336mzz-Z was lower than that with HFC-245fa, the former was never over 115 °C while the latter was up to 126 °C, the power input to the compressor with HFO-1336mzz-Z was 20% less than that with HFC-245fa in the same HP conditions, the heating capacity of the system with HFO-1336mzz-Z was 30–40% less than that with HFC-245fa.

Abstract:CFCs and HCFCs, widely used in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, have been or will be phased out according to the revisions of the Montreal Protocol because they deplete the ozone layer. Many substitutes have been proposed, but no one has perfectly replaced the CFC and HCFC refrigerants. New generation alternatives are being investigated worldwide. According to the industrial and environmental requirements, many factors should be considered in the screening and evaluation of refrigerant alternatives. A new method is proposed using the soft algebra method—fuzzy multiple evaluation. The weights for different factors are determined mathematically and criteria values for all the objects are made dimensionless to quantitatively compare the different alternatives. A new long-term drop-in mixture alternative THR02 is developed and evaluated in a series of theoretical and experimental evaluations. THR02 is proved to be an environment-friendly, nontoxic, inflammable, drop-in alternative to CFC-12 and HFC-134a. The thermal performance of the compressors and refrigerators with THR02 as a drop-in is equal to or higher than with CFC-12 and HFC-134a. The compressor and refrigerator using THR02 perform reliably after long-period running.

Abstract:Refrigerants are largely produced and consumed in China currently, and the new agreement on the 19th meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol accelerated the phase-out of hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), so the alternative to refrigerants has become more urgent in China. Europe countries promote actively the natural refrigerants as the alternatives to HCFCs, and US mainly uses HFCs as the alternatives to HCFCs. The Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Alternative Refrigerants Evaluation Program (AREP) of the United States Air-conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and Technology & Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) Reports of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are introduced in order to provide guidance of alternatives to HCFCs in various fields.

Abstract:A lot of test methods,test conditions and research results about the compatibility between alternative refrigerant/oil and materials since 1990's are reviewed.The materials include plastics,rubbers,metals,motor materials and desiccant used in refrigerators.By reviewing these research results,it is found that many alternative refrigerants are compatible with the materials in the original refrigerators.However,there are still some materials which are not compatible with some refrigerants in some times.The reference are provided for manufacturers to select materials for new refrigeration equipment using alternative refrigerants,also some suggestions are about for the alternative refrigerants.

Abstract:The ternary mixture HFC-32 + HFC-125 + HFC-161 was considered as a potential alternative refrigerant to HCFC-22 and HFC-410A for the environmentally friendly and excellent thermodynamic properties. Vapor liquid equilibrium data are necessary for the mixed refrigerant to evaluate its optimal composition and the cycle performance in the refrigeration cycles. On the basis of this, the vapor liquid equilibrium data for the mixture HFC-32 + HFC-125 + HFC-161 were investigated by the experiment. The vapor liquid equilibrium data were correlated with the Peng-Robinson (PR) equation-of-state combined with the LCVM (linear combination of Vidal and Michelsen) mixing rule and the NRTL (nonrandom two liquid) excess free energy model. The correlated results revealed a good agreement with the experimental data. The average value of the absolute relative pressure deviations was 0.9 %, and the average values of the absolute composition deviations (abs (y(1) - y(1,cal)), abs(y(2) - y(2,cal))) were 0.0098 and 0.0105, respectively. The results further suggested that there was no azeotrope for the ternary mixture. In addition, on the basis of the interactive parameters obtained by correlating the ternary mixture, the predictions for the binary mixtures HFC-32 + HFC-161, HFC-32 + HFC-125 and HFC-161 + HFC-125 at temperatures of 283.15 K, 293.15 K were conducted. The predicted results were analyzed and discussed by comparison with experimental data from the literature.

Abstract:Fluoroethane (HFC-161) is one of the most promising alternative refrigerants because of its excellent environmental and thermodynamic properties. It was considered as one of the most promising absorption working fluids in the absorption refrigeration. To make a better application of the refrigerant in absorption refrigeration systems, suitable absorbents should be selected for matching HFC-161. Vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data is the key of the chemical engineering simulation and the refrigeration cycle calculation. On the basis of these, the vapor-liquid equilibrium data for the mixture of HFC-161 + dimethyl ether triethylene glycol were obtained at temperatures from 293.15 to 353.15 K by using a recirculation apparatus. The VLE data were then correlated by the Peng-Robinson (PR) equation of state combined with the modified Huron-Vidal first order (MHV1) mixing rule and nonrandom two liquid (NRTL) model. The experimental results had a good consistency with calculated values. Phase behaviors of HFC-161 combined with different absorbents were compared in this paper.

Abstract:Refrigeration and Air conditioning technology plays a significant role to pro-mote the civilization progress in human society.But the heavy use of CFCs and HCFCs as refrigerant destroys the ozone layer,as well as increasing global warming.HFCs,the al-ternative to CFCs and HCFCs,have 0 ODP,while most of which have higher GWP.CFCs have been phased out,HCFCs and HFCs are being or will be phased-down.Refrigerant with 0 ODP and lower GWP would be the only choice in the future.This kind of alterna-tives is environmental friendly;however,safety issues like flammablility,toxicity and high pressure are still exsiting,which causes concerns.In fact,these refrigerants have been used in RAC sector for a long time.Long-term operation experience,lots of scien-tific researches and risk evaluations carried out at home and abroad show that if safety measures taken strictly,the alternatives could be used safely.
Thermodynamic Investigation on Low GWP Drop‐in Alternatives to HFC‐245fa in Ejector Refrigeration Cycle for Air Condition Application

Abstract:The ejector refrigeration cycle (ERC) with HFC-245fa can achieve high efficiency and reliability for air conditioning applications. However, because of its high global warming potential (GWP), HFC-245fa needed to be phased out according to recent relative regulations. In this study, four promising alternatives to HFC-245fa were investigated and evaluated, including HC-600, HCFO-1233zd(E), HFO-1336mzz(Z), and HCFO-1224 yd(Z). Besides their low GWP, these alternatives also have similar vapor pressure curves to HFC-245fa, which represents a possibility for refrigerant drop-in replacement in ERC. Thermodynamic real gas modeling of the ERC was adopted in this study for more accurate results, and a critical performance evaluation and comparison with those candidates in ERC were carried out. The results indicate that HCFO-1233zd(E) and HCFO-1224 yd(Z) are outstanding candidates for ERC according to the higher coefficient of performance, entrainment ratio, exergy efficiency, and lower pump power consumption, and the COP relative differences of these two refrigerants would reach 5.5% and 4.6%. HFO-1336mzz(Z) consumes 33% less power at the pump than HFC-245fa under the same conditions and refrigeration capacity. Minimal pump power consumption is its advantage. Although HC-600 is prominent, with the largest coefficient of performance and entrainment ratio, its flammability is not conducive to its popularization. Machine learning is available to predict the performance of ejectors employing different refrigerants. This paper helps to properly select refrigerants for ERC and to pre-evaluate the refrigerants' application under different working conditions.

Abstract:The Copenhagen revision to the Montreal Protocol states that CFC-12 should be phased out by 1996 (in developed countries). But the alternatives now used have some shortcomings. By using the multiple objective decision making methods, mixture THR02 is proposed as a new alternative to CFC-12 and HFC-134a. This paper presents the screening of alternatives, characteristics of THR02, the thermal performance and long-period tests of compressors, and the domestic refrigerator test. Also, the modeling evaluation of varied working conditions is described. THR02 has characteristics: zero ODP, low GWP value, nonflammable, nontoxic, good thermal performance. It is adaptable to existing system without modifying lubricant oil and compressor. THR02 is one of the prospective long-term refrigerants as drop-in alternative.

Abstract:In this paper, the refrigerant HFC-161 as an alternative refrigerant to HFC-410A is presented in a small scale refrigeration system. Theoretical cycle performances of HFC-410A, HFC-32 and HFC-161 are calculated and analyzed under the rated working condition. The results show that the COP of HFC-161 is 10.0% and 17.8% higher than that of HFC-32 and HFC-410A, respectively, and the discharge temperature of HFC-161 is the lowest among these refrigerants. Experimental tests were also performed on a vapor-compression refrigeration system with a rotor compressor which was originally designed for HFC-410A to compare the cycle performance of the HFC-410A, HFC-32 and HFC-161 under different working conditions. Experimental results show that the HFC-161 can achieve higher COP by 15–25% than HFC-410A and HFC-32, and the discharging temperature of HFC-161 is much lower than that of HFC-410A and HFC-32. The power consumption and cooling capacity of HFC-161 are the smallest among these refrigerants. The cooling capacity and COP of HFC-32 is very similar to those of HFC-410A, but discharging temperature and power consumption of HFC-32 are slightly higher those of HFC-410A under most working conditions. These results show that HFC-161 is a promising alternative refrigerant to HFC-410A for small-scale refrigeration systems, which supply a very valuable reference for the actual system of HFC-161.

Abstract:With the development of the alternative refrigerant technology, the thermophysical properties of hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants have attracted much attention. Among these thermophysical properties, the thermal conductivity of refrigerants is a key parameter of phase change and convective heat transfer process of refrigeration cycle and also an important basis for the selection of alternative refrigerants. Therefore, studies on the thermal conductivity of refrigerants are of great significance. At present, many studies emphasized on the thermal conductivity of refrigerants, but there is no public report on the investigation of the saturated liquid thermal conductivity of HFO-1336mzz(E). On the basis of the current state, the thermal conductivities of HFO-1336mzz(E) by means of the general models were first predicted, then the thermal conductivities of the saturated liquid phase of HFO-1336mzz(E) in the temperature range of 253.15-353.15 K were measured based on the transient hot wire method. A comparison of prediction and experimental data was developed, and a special equation of the saturated liquid thermal conductivity for HFO-1336mzz(E) was recommended.

Abstract:<p>High global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants for refrigeration and heat pump systems or organic Rankine cycle systems are being phased out because of their impact on climate change, such as R134a, R410A and R404A. So it is urgent to find the refrigerants with excellent environmental protection performance. Firstly, nearly 40 alternative refrigerants, including pure refrigerants and mixed refrigerants, are classified according to their environmental and safety characteristics. Secondly, the performance parameters of some typical alternatives, such as refrigerating capacity, COP, safety and environmental protection, are comprehensively compared. It can be concluded that R513a and R466A have good comprehensive performance as alternative refrigerants of R134a and R410A respectively, while those alternatives to R404A have both advantages and disadvantages. The application and technical characteristics of R32, some typical HFOs, natural refrigerants and mixtures are summarized and analyzed. In addition, our group has carried out experimental and theoretical research on the flammability of low GWP and flammable refrigerants such as R1234yf, R161, R290, R600a and R1150, and found that hydrocarbons are more difficult to be inhibited than halogenated hydrocarbons. Finally, a new research idea on the risk of refrigerant explosion is put forward, which can cover the refrigerant leakage, combustion and risk aversion.</p>

Abstract:In this work, experiment was conducted to examine the thermo-physical properties of an alternative refrigerant to HCFC-22 in the presence of polyol ester (POE). The new alternative refrigerant is a mixture of HFC-32/125/161, whose physical properties are similar to HCFC-22 but has a lower global warming potential (GWP) than that of R407C. POE is used as the tested lubricating oil in the experiment. The saturated vapor pressure data and vapor–liquid equilibrium data of nine different mass fractions of the new refrigerant and polyol ester (POE) in the temperature range of 253–323K were measured by single-phase cycle method. The experiment results showed that there was no stratification, no sediment generation in the liquid phase of the mixture, and the color of liquid phase of the mixture had no change in the equilibrium cell before and after the experiment with the POE concentration greater than 20% and the temperature higher than 258K; with POE concentration lower than 20% and temperature lower than 258K, stratification began to appear. Meanwhile, when POE and the refrigerant were miscible, the saturated pressure data of the mixture (HFC-32/125/161+POE) revealed that POE had a very small impact on saturated vapor pressure of the mixture (almost negligible) when POE was less than 10% of the mixture; POE has an obvious effect on the saturated vapor pressure of the mixture when there is more than 10% POE in the mixture, especially when the temperature is higher than 283.15K. Experimental data were correlated by Flory–Huggins model, Heil model, NRTL model and Wilson model. The results showed that to the average and maximum pressure deviation, the results were better with considering the effects of temperature on the energy parameters. Among the above models, the NRTL activity coefficient model was the best, the Heil and Wilson models followed and the Flory–Huggins model had the largest deviation from the experimental data.

Cycle Performance Studies on a New HFC-161/125/143a Mixture As an Alternative Refrigerant to R404A

Abstract:In this paper, a new ternary non-azeotropic mixture of HFC-161/125/143a (0.15/0.45/0.40 in mass fraction), as a promising mixed refrigerant to R404A, is presented. The ozone depletion potential (ODP) of the new refrigerant is zero and its basic thermodynamic properties are similar to those of R404A, but its global warming potential (GWP) is much smaller than those of R507A and R404A. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations show that, under the working condition I (the average evaporation temperature: −23 °C, the average condensing temperature: 43 °C, the superheat temperature: 28 °C, the subcooling temperature: 5 °C), the volumetric refrigerating effect and specific refrigerating effect of the new mixture are 2.33% and 15.48% higher, respectively, than those of R404A. The coefficient of performance (COP) of the new mixture is 5.19% higher than that of R404A and the pressure ratio of the new mixture is 0.82% lower than that of R404A. Equally, under the working condition II (the average evaporation temperature: −40 °C, the average condensing temperature: 35 °C, the superheating temperature: 30 °C, the subcooling temperature: 5 °C), the volumetric refrigerating effect and specific refrigerating effect of the new mixture are 2.24% and 20.58% higher, respectively, than those of R404A. The COP of the new mixture is 4.60% higher than that of R404A and the pressure ratio of the new mixture is similar to that of R404A. The performances of the new mixture and R404A are compared in a vapor compressor refrigeration apparatus originally designed for R404A under several working conditions (condensing temperatures: 35–45 °C, evaporation temperatures: −40–−20 °C). Experimental results show that the new mixture can obtain a higher COP, by 6.3% to 12.1%, and a lower pressure ratio, by 1.8% to 6.6%, compared to R404A; although the discharge temperature of the new mixture is slightly higher than that of R404A. The advantages of the new mixture will be further verified in the actual system.

Abstract:Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and so-called hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) are used as refrigerants in air conditioning, refrigeration, chillers, heat pumps and devices for dehumidification and drying. However, many HFCs, including R-134a and R-125, have a high global warming potential and some of the HFCs and HFOs degrade atmospherically and form persistent degradation products. Thus, there is an urgent need to replace fluorinated refrigerants with non-fluorinated working fluids to avoid direct emissions due to leakage, incorrect loading or removal. It is important, however, also to select refrigerants with high efficiencies to avoid indirect CO2 emissions due to a (too) high energy consumption during the use phase. The present study investigates the available non-fluorinated alternatives to fluorinated refrigerants and shows that a transition to non-fluorinated refrigerants, in general, is possible and has happened in many sectors already. Technically, there are only slight barriers to overcome to replace fluorinated refrigerants in almost all newly developed systems conforming to existing standards. Additionally, we show that alternatives are available even for some use cases for which derogations have been proposed in the PFAS restriction proposal and suggest making these derogations more specific to support bringing the use of non-fluorinated refrigerants into practice.
