Abstract:The solid complexes of phytic acid with trivalent rare earth metals in aqueous solution were synthesized and characterized by means of elementary analysis, IR and thermoanalysis. The composition of complexes [(C6H6)H-4(PO4)(6)](3) . RE(I)(8) . C2H5OH . xH(2)O (x=10 similar to 15, RE=Y, Pr, Gd, Tb, Er, Yb) was determined. The IR specra of complexes show that RE(I) is coordinated by O-P-O bridging group of phytic acid to form polynuclear polymer. In addition, the thermal decomposition kinetics of the complexes was investigated as well.

Abstract:The molecular symmetry in rare earth (RE) coordination chemistry is critically important for controlling the electronic structure of the RE ion and resulting magnetic and photophysical properties. Here we report a family with unusual C3 point symmetry, [REIII(Br4catH)3(tpa)] (Br4catH− = tetrabromocatecholate, tpa = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine). The synthesis and solid-state characterisation of eleven analogues (RE = Y, Sm to Lu) were performed, enabling a systematic investigation of the effect of symmetry on various physical properties across the RE series. The crystal structures reveal a unique cooperative coordination motif, featuring a cyclic hydrogen-bonding network between the atypical monodentate monoprotonated Br4catH− ligands. Electrochemistry reveals a single oxidation process that suggests a concerted three-electron oxidation of all tetrabromocatecholate ligands to semiquinonate. Furthermore, single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour was investigated, revealing unexpected in-field slow magnetic relaxation for both Dy and Yb analogues, which can be rationalised by the effect of C3-symmetry. Finally, luminescence measurements were performed to probe the CF splitting of the Yb analogue and quantify the error in the overall CF splitting suggested by ab initio calculations. The governing effects of C3-symmetry are consistent observations in all RE3+ metals studied in this work, manifesting in the concerted three-electron oxidation, SMM behaviour, ground state composition, and luminescence properties.

Abstract:Isostructural compounds RE3Sb3Co2O14 (RE=La, Pr, Nd, Sm–Ho) with an ordered pyrochlore structure were synthesized. The structure of La3Sb3Co2O14 was solved ab initio based on powder XRD data, and refined by combining with high resolution neutron diffraction data. La3Sb3Co2O14 crystallizes in the space group R-3m with the unit cell parameters a=7.52954(2)Å and c=17.59983(6)Å. The structures of other members in this family are confirmed by Rietveld refinement using powder X-ray diffraction data. The cations (RE, Sb and Co) in RE3Sb3Co2O14 are orderly distributed, presenting as [RE3Co][Sb3Co]O14 formula, and giving rise to two distinctive Kagome lattices constructed by RE3+ and Sb5+, respectively. Co2+ occupies 8-coordinated and 6-coordinated environments, showing low spin (S=1/2) and high spin (S=3/2) states respectively. The magnetic susceptibility and UV–visual spectroscopy supports the magnetic observation. TDDFT calculation was performed to interpret the electronic states. The compounds [RE3Co][Sb3Co]O14 provide a profound example in which the ideal 2D Kagome lattice is derived from the 3D pyrochlore-type structure by an ordered distribution of the metal cations.

Abstract:The rare earth (RE) based alloys or compounds with excellent cryogenic magnetocaloric performance have received much research interest recently due to their potential applications of environmental friend magnetic refrigeration (MR) technology. Herein, three ternary RE-based carbide compounds RE2Cr2C3 (RE = Er, Ho, and Dy) were synthesized, an investigation of combined experimental and theoretical has been performed with regard to crystal structure, magnetic properties, magnetic phase transition as well as the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and magnetocaloric performance. All the RE2Cr2C3 carbide compounds are crystallized in the orthorhombic type crystal structure (C12/m1 space group). The magnetic ground state was confirmed to be ferromagnetic (FM) for Er2Cr2C3, whereas antiferromagnetic (AFM) for Ho2Cr2C3 and Dy2Cr2C3 compounds by density functional theory calculation in addition to experimental observation. Large cryogenic MCE has been observed with the maximum isothermal magnetic entropy change (triangle S-M(max)) of 15.20, 13.98 and 9.04 J/kgK for Er2Cr2C, Ho2Cr2C3 and Dy2Cr2C3 under the magnetic field change (triangle H) of 0-5 T, respectively. Additionally, low field table-like MCE has been achieved in the Er2Cr2C3/Ho2Cr2C3 composites, which is benefit for active applications. These results assess and highlight the potential applicative interest of RE2Cr2C3 carbide compounds in the field of cryogenic MR.

Abstract:Three novel complexes containing ligand of N-phenyl norcantharidin acylamide acid (HL = 3-phenyl carbamoyl-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] heptane-2-carboxylic acid, C14H15NO4) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, conductivity measurement, IR spectra, and thermogravimetric analysis. The general formulas of the complexes were [RE(L)(NO3)(H2O)(2)]NO3 center dot 2H(2)O, (RE = Y(III), Gd(III), Dy(III)). The results indicated that the oxygen atoms of carbonyl, cyclic ether, and carboxylate coordinated to RE (III), and there was also one nitrate taking part in coordination. RE(III) and HL formed 1:1 chelate complexes and the suggested coordination number was eight. The interactions between the complexes and DNA have been investigated by means of fluorescence spectra, viscosity, and agarose gel electrophoresis. The results showed that the complexes could bind to DNA by the modes of partly intercalation. The binding abilities of the complexes with DNA follow the trend:Dy(III) complex > Gd(III) complex > Y(III) complex. The results of the agarose gel electrophoresis showed that all the complexes are capable of cleaving pBR322 plasmid DNA at physiological pH and temperature.

Abstract:Highlights • Three new rare earth metal compounds are synthesized and single crystals are obtained. • 1D and 2D structures of compounds are formed by different types of hydrogen bonds. • The thermal behavior of the compounds is studied by TG/DSC-FTIR. • Compound 3 can emit orange-red light and has outstanding fluorescence properties. Three new rare earth coordination compounds [REL 3 Ph] 2 (RE = Pr(1), Sm(2)); [ErL 3 Ph] 2 ·4C 2 H 5 OH(3); (L = 2,6-dimethylbenzoate, Ph = o-phenanthroline) were synthesized. The crystal structures of the three compounds were measured by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. From the results, we made out that compounds 1–3 were binuclear structures, and 1D chain-like structures could be formed by hydrogen bonding. The thermal degradation data of the compounds and the three-dimentional infrared cumulative spectra of the gaseous decomposed products were obtained by TG/DSC-FTIR technique, and the thermal degradation patterns were explained. The isobaric molar heat capacity of compounds 1 and 2 in the low-temperature region was obtained by the DSC technique and the thermodynamic parameters were derived. The fluorescence spectrum of compound 2 was determined, showing that it had potential application value in the orange-red luminescence region. Abstract:Effect of an internal chemical pressure on structural, optical, magnetic and electrical properties in Bi0.9RE0.1FeO3 Ceramics (RE =Gd3+,Tb3+,Dy3+)has been studied extensively. Some of the highlights are as follows; 1. Coexistence of orthorhombic Bragg reflections along with the R3c phase.(Structural Phase separation revealed from XRD and Raman spectroscopy) 2. Selective softening of phonon mode corresponding to oxygen motion suggests a significant destabilization in the FeO6 octahedra. 3. Three Charge transfer transitions (Fe1 3d\rightarrow Fe2 3d, Op \rightarrow Fed,Op \rightarrow Bip) and a doubly degenerate d-d transition (6A1g \rightarrow 4T2g) have been observed through optical studies. 4. The suppression of spiral spin structure release the macroscopic magnetization so called weak ferromagnetism in RE-BFO samples and expalined by presence of DM interaction 5. Heat flow measurement reveals a decrease in Neel transition temperature (TN) with RE3+-ion substitution endorses the suppression of antiferromagnetic ordering. Present results also provide an 6. Abstract:A series of carboxylate-bridged heteronuclear 3d-4f complexes have been prepared by reaction of REL3 (HL = CH2 = C(CH3)COOH) with Cu(NO3)2. A family of air-stable 2-D complexes [RECuL4(H2O)4]nLn (RE = La (1), Ce (2), Eu (3), and Gd (4)) have the same crystal system (monoclinic) and space group (P21/c). The chains which are made by the carboxylate-bridged alternating Cu(II)-RE(III) fragments spreading along the c-axis are linked through hydrogen bonds by uncoordinated carboxylates to form a 2-D network structure along the bc planes. Magnetic measurements showed that 1 and 2 have antiferromagnetic interaction between RE and Cu, but 4 exhibits ferromagnetic interaction. Eu ions show van Vleck behavior in 3.
A Class of Compounds Featuring Frustrated Triangular Magnetic Lattice CsRESe$_2$ (RE=La-Lu): Quantum Spin-Liquid Candidates

Abstract:A triangular lattice selenide series of rare earth (RE), CsRESe2, were synthesized as large single crystals using a flux growth method. This series stabilized in either trigonal (R-3m) or hexagonal (P63/mmc) crystal systems. Physical properties of CsRESe2 were explored by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements down to 0.4 K. Antiferromagnetic interaction was observed in all magnetic compounds, while no long-range magnetic order was found, indicating the frustrated magnetism. CsDySe2 presents spin freezing at 0.7 K, revealing a spin-glass state. CsCeSe2 and CsYbSe2 present broad peaks at 0.7 K and 1.5 K in the magnetization, respectively, suggesting the short-range interactions between magnetic rare earth ions. The lack of signature for long-range magnetic order and spin freezing down to 0.4 K in these compounds (RE = Ce, Yb) implies their candidacy for quantum spin liquid state.

Abstract:Anionic ancillary ligands play a critical role in the construction of rare earth (RE) metal complexes due to the large influence on the stability of the molecule and engendering emergent electronic properties that are of interest in a plethora of applications. Supporting ligands comprising oxygen donor atoms are highly pursued in RE chemistry owing to the high oxophilicity innate to these ions. The scarcely employed bis(acyl)phosphide (BAP) ligands feature oxygen coordination sites and contain a phosphide backbone rendering it attractive for RE-coordination chemistry. Here, we integrate bis(mesitoyl)phosphide (mesBAP) as an ancillary ligand into REIII chemistry to generate the first dinuclear trivalent RE complexes containing BAP ligands; [{mesBAP}2RE(THF)(μ-Cl)]2 (RE=Y, (1), Gd (2), and Dy (3); THF=tetrahydrofuran). Each RE center is ligated to two monoanionic mesBAP ligands, one THF molecule and one chloride ion. All three molecules were characterized through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, 31P NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. 31P, 1H and 13C NMR on the diamagnetic yttrium congener 1 confirm asymmetric ligand coordination. DFT calculations conducted on 2 provided insight into the electronic structure. The magnetic properties of 2 and 3 were investigated via SQUID magnetometry. The GdIII ions exhibit weak antiferromagnetic coupling, corroborated by DFT results.

Abstract:Three new isostructural rare earth metal coordination polymers, [Re (L)(H2O)2]•n H2O (Re=Y, n=1 for 1; Ho, n=2 for 2; and Er, n=0 for 3), have been successfully synthesized via solvothermal reactions with three rare earth metal nitrates and a semirigid multi-carboxylate ligand H3L [H3L=4-(2-carboxyphenoxy)isophthalic acid]. Single crystal X-ray analysis reveals that complexes 1-3 are isostructural and show 2D layer frameworks connected by O atoms of the carboxyl group from H3L ligand. The near-infrared luminescence properties of complexes 2 and 3 were initially explored, which provided a possibility for further development of near-infrared photoluminescence materials and their exciting use in biomedical field.

Abstract:Polymorphic rare-earth disilicates RE2Si2O7 (RE = La–Lu, Y, and Sc) are attractive materials as thermal barrier coatings and scintillators; however, the orthorhombic E(δ)-type (RE = Eu–Ho and Y) and the triclinic F-type (RE = Sm and Eu) remain structurally controversial hitherto. In this work, we revisit the crystal structures of E(δ)-RE2Si2O7 (Pnma), F-RE2Si2O7 (P1̅), and the monoclinic G-La2Si2O7 (P21/n) by X-ray single-crystal/powder diffraction. The second-harmonic generation (SHG) and/or the local-structure-sensitive VUV–UV–vis luminescence of Ce3+/Eu3+ validate the structure determination. E(δ)-RE2Si2O7 (RE = Eu–Ho) crystallizes in the centrosymmetric Pnma instead of the previous noncentrosymmetric Pna21 (a subgroup of Pnma). Increasing the RE3+ radius results in structural transformations of the reconstructive-type E(δ) ↔ F and translationengleiche subgroup–group relationship F ↔ G (RE = La–Nd). More importantly, we perform a complete survey of 17 structure-types over 63 compounds of RE2Si2O7 and their related transformations depending on the radius of RE3+. On the basis of these studies, one could (i) predict the potential polymorphs of RE2Si2O7, including the high-pressure phase and the RE2Si2O7 solid solutions; (ii) correlate the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) with the crystal structure, and (iii) understand the unusual radioluminescence of (Gd,La)2Si2O7:Ce3+ high-temperature scintillators.

Abstract:The development of new ligands is crucial for the functional application of REEs(III), because the coordination compounds of rare-earth elements (REEs) have many important applications in pharmaceuticals and nuclear medicine. In this paper, a novel ligand (Cr6-Bz-DGA) with the aza-crown ether and diglycolamide (DGA) units was designed to coordinate with light, medium, and heavy REEs(III). It was found that M/L┬Ā=┬Ā2:2 species (aza-crown ether-REEs(III)-DGA connection) was the thermodynamically stable complex. The stability constants of Nd(III), Eu(III), and Ho(III) complexes were determined by UVŌĆōVis and fluorescence titration, respectively, which were log ╬▓ Nd ┬Ā=┬Ā7.49┬Ā┬▒┬Ā0.019, log ╬▓ Eu ┬Ā=┬Ā7.10┬Ā┬▒┬Ā0.013 and log ╬▓ Ho ┬Ā=┬Ā8.27┬Ā┬▒┬Ā0.032. The variation of fluorescence lifetime suggested that the Eu(III) ion was exclusively coordinated by the ligand with coordination number 9 in the inner sphere of the Eu(III) ion. The shifts of 1 H NMR revealed that there are different coordination between the ligand and REEs(III). For larger ionic radii La(III), three O atoms of the DGA unit and five O and one N atoms of the aza-crown ether unit were supplied. While, for Y(III)/Lu(III) with smaller ion radii, the ligand supplied three O atoms from the DGA and one N atom and only two O atoms from the aza-crown ether. The displacement experiment of REEs(III) combined with ligand and the fitted stability constants prove that the smaller ionic radii REEs(III) more strongly bind with ligand than larger ionic radius REEs(III). These results may help understand the coordination behavior of REEs(III) and expand their potential applications.

Abstract:A new series of quaternary CsRE2Ag3Te5 (RE = Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd-Er) and RbRE2Ag3Te5 (RE = Sm, Gd-Dy), which have been synthesized from the elemental mixtures in ACl flux (A = Rb, Cs) and crystallized in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm, with a = 4.620(2)-4.504(2) Å, b = 16.232(8)-16.027(8) Å, c = 18.84(1)-18.32(2) and Z = 4, are isostructural to RbSm2Ag3Se5. These isostructural ARE2Ag3Te5 feature a three-dimensional tunnel framework constructed by ionically bound RETe6 octahedron and covalently bound AgTe4 tetrahedron in which tunnels are filled by A. Typical semiconducting behavior is revealed by the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, optical band gap measurement, and the theoretical calculations. The undoped sintered polycrystalline pellets of CsRE2Ag3Te5 (containing 1.1-1.7% CsCl impurity) show very low electrical conductivity (σr.t. = 0.5-2.4 S/cm), very low thermal conductivity (kr,t = 0.66-0.53 W/(m·K)), and moderate Seebeck coefficient (160-200 μV/K at 700 K).

Abstract:Some new complexes RE2(EDODA)3��3H2O, where RE=La, Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Er, Yb, Lu and Y, EDODA=ethylene-1,2-dioxydiacetate, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR spectra, UV spectra, TG-DTA, 'H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. Various analyses indicate that the complexes are of nine-coordinated binuclear structure. The carboxylates are bidentate ligands and the ether oxygen atoms also coordinate to rare earth ions. Three water molecules are crystalline water. In addition, the influence of concentration on the chemical shift has been studied through the 1H NMR spectra of the complex Lu2(EDODA)3��3H2O in different concentrations.

Abstract:The ternary rare earth RECoSi2 (RE = Er and Tm) intermetallic compounds were synthesized by means of arc-melting technique and their crystal structure, magnetism and magneto-caloric effect (MCE) were studied systematically. Both ErCoSi2 and TmCoSi2 crystallize in a CeNiSi2-type structure (Cmcm space group) confirmed by FULLPROF Rietveld refinement. Magnetization data indicates the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state for both RECoSi2 compounds, and a magnetic field-induced ferromagnetic (FM) transition occurs below the Neel temperature T N ∼6.9 K for ErCoSi2 and ∼5.4 K for TmCoSi2. Considerable reversible MCE in ErCoSi2 and TmCoSi2 was observed. The MCE performances of RECoSi2 are evaluated by -ΔS M max (maximal magnetic entropy change), TEC(3) (temperature averaged entropy change), and RCP (relative cooling power) with the values of 7.1 J/kg K, 6.8 J/kg K and 165.9 J/kg for ErCoSi2, as well as 8.7 J/kg K, 8.5 J/kg K and 152.9 J/kg for TmCoSi2, respectively, under ΔH (field change) of 0–50 kOe.

Abstract:The novel rare earth monosilicates (xRE 1/x ) 2 SiO 5 (RE=Yb, Tm, Er, Y, Dy and Tb, x=2-6) were prepared in order to establish the relationship between configurational entropy and lattice distortion, and the effect of configurational entropy on their properties was investigated. The results showed that the lattice distortion of (xRE 1/x ) 2 SiO 5 increased gradually with the increase of configurational entropy, but the multi-principal component solid solution tended to form a highly symmetrical crystal structure when the configurational entropy was large enough, thus inhibiting the lattice distortion. (5RE 1/5 ) 2 SiO 5 had a maximum lattice distortion, which leaded to a relatively low thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion, and good CMAS corrosion resistance.

Abstract:In this work, a series of multicomponent rare-earth zirconate (RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 , RE=La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd or Yb) ceramics were synthesized using solid-state reaction method. The phase stability and key factors affecting the thermal conductivity and mechanical performances were investigated. These materials possess pyrochlore-fluorite dual-phase structure and show excellent high-temperature phase stability. (La 1/2 Yb 1/2 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 displays a lower amorphous-like thermal conductivity (1.39–1.67 Wm −1 K −1 , 25–1000 °C), while other specimens present a 1/T-like dependence at low temperatures. (La 1/5 Nd 1/5 Sm 1/5 Gd 1/5 Yb 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 exhibit higher hardness (11.37 ± 0.35 GPa) and fracture toughness (2.10 ± 0.11 MPa·m 1/2 ) in comparison with others. Size disorder shows stronger correlations with the thermal conductivity of multicomponent dual-phase RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 ceramics, while the influence of configurational entropy is more significant for mechanical properties. A synergistic increase in configurational entropy and size disorder is an effective strategy to enhance the comprehensive performance of multicomponent dual-phase rare-earth zirconates.

Abstract:A triangular lattice selenide series of rare earths (RE), CsRESe2, were synthesized as large single crystals, using a flux growth method. This series stabilized in either trigonal (R3m) or hexagonal (P6(3)/mmc) crystal systems. Physical properties of CsRESe2 were explored by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements down to 0.4 K. Antiferromagnetic interaction was observed in all magnetic compounds, while no long-range magnetic order was found, indicating the frustrated magnetism. CsDySe2 presents spin freezing at 0.7 K, revealing a spin-glass state. CsCeSe2 and CsYbSe2 present broad peaks at 0.7 and 1.5 K, respectively, in the magnetization, suggesting the shortrange interactions between magnetic RE ions. The lack of signature for long-range magnetic order and spin freezing down to 0.4 K in these compounds (RE = Ce, Yb) implies their candidacy for a quantum spin liquid state.
