Abstract:Four new complexes of rare earths with a triaza-crown ether (L) derived from N3O2-macro cycle 1,12,15-triaza-3, 4: 9,10-dibenzo-5, 8-dioxacycloheptadecane were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, molar conductance, TG-DTA analysis and fluorescence spectra. The composition of the complexes determined as [RE(NO3)3L*3H2O]*H2O (RE=Sm, Eu, Tb and Dy). It is found that Sm3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+ complexes all show strong fluorescence emission in the solid state. Among these complexes, Tb3+ complex has the strongest luminescence intensity. It shows that the ligand L triplet state energy matches 5D4 energy level of Tb3+. In the Eu3+ complex, η(5D0→7F2/5D0→7F1) is 2.6, which indicates that Eu3+ locates at the asymmetric coordination field.

Abstract:Three novel complexes containing ligand of N-phenyl norcantharidin acylamide acid (HL = 3-phenyl carbamoyl-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] heptane-2-carboxylic acid, C14H15NO4) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, conductivity measurement, IR spectra, and thermogravimetric analysis. The general formulas of the complexes were [RE(L)(NO3)(H2O)(2)]NO3 center dot 2H(2)O, (RE = Y(III), Gd(III), Dy(III)). The results indicated that the oxygen atoms of carbonyl, cyclic ether, and carboxylate coordinated to RE (III), and there was also one nitrate taking part in coordination. RE(III) and HL formed 1:1 chelate complexes and the suggested coordination number was eight. The interactions between the complexes and DNA have been investigated by means of fluorescence spectra, viscosity, and agarose gel electrophoresis. The results showed that the complexes could bind to DNA by the modes of partly intercalation. The binding abilities of the complexes with DNA follow the trend:Dy(III) complex > Gd(III) complex > Y(III) complex. The results of the agarose gel electrophoresis showed that all the complexes are capable of cleaving pBR322 plasmid DNA at physiological pH and temperature.
Studies on the Solid Complexes of Re(Iii) with Phytic Acid

Abstract:The solid complexes of phytic acid with trivalent rare earth metals in aqueous solution were synthesized and characterized by means of elementary analysis, IR and thermoanalysis. The composition of complexes [(C6H6)H-4(PO4)(6)](3) . RE(I)(8) . C2H5OH . xH(2)O (x=10 similar to 15, RE=Y, Pr, Gd, Tb, Er, Yb) was determined. The IR specra of complexes show that RE(I) is coordinated by O-P-O bridging group of phytic acid to form polynuclear polymer. In addition, the thermal decomposition kinetics of the complexes was investigated as well.

Abstract:Rare earth metal complexes have attracted great attention due to their special physical and chemical properties. In this paper, a series of complexes of rare earth nitrates with N,N′-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-ethylenediamine ligand (L) were synthesized from the acetonitrile solution. The obtained new complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that all the complexes have 1∶1 molar ratio of metal salt to ligand with general formula of [RE(NO_3)_3L]·nH_2O [RE=La(Ⅲ), Nd(Ⅲ), Eu(Ⅲ), Tb(Ⅲ), Er(Ⅲ), n= 2.5, 1.5, 1]. The luminescent properties of Eu(Ⅲ) and Tb(Ⅲ) complexes were also studied at room temperature in the solid state and it is found that the Eu(Ⅲ) and Tb(Ⅲ) complexes show characteristic emissions of Eu(Ⅲ) and Tb(Ⅲ) ions, respectively.

Abstract:Some novel binary and ternary complexes of rare earth(Gd, Eu,Tb) with N-Phenylanthranilic acid and 1,10-Phenanthroline were synthesized by homogenous precipitation and their compositions were characterized by,elemental analysis, IR spectra and UV-Vis spectra, The triplet state energies of N-Phenylanthranilic acid was determined to be 24 330 cm(-1) with the phosphorescence spectra of its gadolinium complexes and the energy match between the ligand and the central rare earth ions was studied. The photophysical properties such as luminescence properties and intramolecular energy transfer match between rare earth ions and ligands and between ligands were discussed. The result indicates that terbium complexes with N-Phenylanthranilic acid and 1,10-Phenanthroline have excellent luminescence properties.

Abstract:Yb3+ complexes with two nitrilotriacetic acid molecules were prepared and their compositions were determined as K3[Yb(nta)2(H2O)]*5H2O and Na3[Yb(nta)2]*6H2O by elemental analyses. Their structures were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. In complex K3[Yb(nta)2(H2O)]*5H2O, the YbN2O7 part forms a nine-coordinate monocapped square antiprismatic structure. In complex Na3[Yb(nta)2]*6H2O, the YbN2O6 part forms an eight-coordinate square antiprismatic structure. It can be seen that the outer cations (K+ and Na+) greatly affect the coordination number and coordinate structure from these results.

Abstract:Five lanthanide complexes are synthesized from Ln(NO3)3·6H2O(Ln=Sm,Gd,Dy,Ho,Tm) and a schiff base,2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)imino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propanic acid.The latter is derived from salicylaldehyde and L-tyrosine.These complexes are characterized with element analysis,infrared spectroscopy,ultraviolet spectroscopy,molar conductivity measurements,thermogravimetric analysis),and differential thermal analysis.The stoichiometry is deduced to be \(C2H5OH)(NO3),and the possible structure is proposed.The thermal decomposition reaction kinetics of Dy complex is studied by thermogravimetry.

Abstract:Some new complexes RE2(EDODA)3��3H2O, where RE=La, Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Er, Yb, Lu and Y, EDODA=ethylene-1,2-dioxydiacetate, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR spectra, UV spectra, TG-DTA, 'H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. Various analyses indicate that the complexes are of nine-coordinated binuclear structure. The carboxylates are bidentate ligands and the ether oxygen atoms also coordinate to rare earth ions. Three water molecules are crystalline water. In addition, the influence of concentration on the chemical shift has been studied through the 1H NMR spectra of the complex Lu2(EDODA)3��3H2O in different concentrations.

Abstract:A new ligand, N,N'-Bis(6-methyl-2-pyridine-N-oxide)-1,3-propane (L), and some binary lanthanide complexes (Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+) were synthesized and characterized in detail. The composition of the binary complexes was determined as LnL(NO3)(3). They are 1: 1 electrolytes in DMF. The complexes have strong characteristic line fluorescence emission spectra, and it is also found that TbL(NO3)(3) complex has stronger luminescence intensity than EuL(NO3)(3) in solid state and in methanol.

Abstract:Three new isostructural rare earth metal coordination polymers, [Re (L)(H2O)2]•n H2O (Re=Y, n=1 for 1; Ho, n=2 for 2; and Er, n=0 for 3), have been successfully synthesized via solvothermal reactions with three rare earth metal nitrates and a semirigid multi-carboxylate ligand H3L [H3L=4-(2-carboxyphenoxy)isophthalic acid]. Single crystal X-ray analysis reveals that complexes 1-3 are isostructural and show 2D layer frameworks connected by O atoms of the carboxyl group from H3L ligand. The near-infrared luminescence properties of complexes 2 and 3 were initially explored, which provided a possibility for further development of near-infrared photoluminescence materials and their exciting use in biomedical field.

Abstract:Three novel rare earth complexes, [Ln2(DCA)2(phen)2](NO3)2·6H2O (Ln(III)=Sm(III)(1), Er(III)(2), Yb(III)(3); DCA2−=demethylcantharate, 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1] heptane-2,3-dicarboxylate, C8H8O52−; phen=1,10-phenanthroline, C12H8N2) were synthesized. The structures were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR and TGA. The results suggested that the structural features of the complexes were: in each DCA2−, one carboxylate group, as bidentate bridging group, connected two rare earth ions; the other carboxylate group, as bidentate chelate group took part in the coordination with rare earth ion. And cyclic ether oxygen of DCA2− and nitrogen atoms of phen took part in the coordination. The probable coordination number was seven. The interaction of the complexes with DNA was studied by UV-spectra, fluorescence spectra and viscosity measurements. Following increasing the concentration of DNA, the UV absorption bands nearby 265 nm of the three complexes appeared hypochromism and red-shift phenomena. And the values of binding constants Kb were 1.89×105 L/mol (1), 3.54×104 L/mol (2) and 3.83×104 L/mol (3). The complexes could quench the fluorescence of EB-DNA system, and the values of equilibrium constants Ksq were 1.72(1), 0.56(2) and 1.09(3). The relative viscosity of DNA steadily decreased with increasing the concentration of complexes. So, we could infer that the complexes may partially insert into DNA. The study of agarose gel electrophoresis showed that the complexes could cleave plasmid DNA, and the process of the reaction was through unclassical redox mechanism.

Abstract:The oxygen-bridged dinuclear rare earth complexes (Ln = Nd (1), Y (2)) bearing N-heterocyclic olefin moieties were synthesized by treating the imidazolidinium salt [SIMes-H]Br with potassium amide and rare earth bis(trimethylsilyl)amides. Complex 1 was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and complex 2 was characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. Both complexes were characterized by elemental analysis. Crystal data of complex 1: C74H138O2N8Si8Nd2, M-r = 1685.12, orthorhombic, space group Pbca, a = 25.1105(7), b = 11.9188(2), c = 29.6151(7) angstrom, V= 8863.4(4) angstrom(3), Z = 4, D-c = 1.263 g.cm(-3), mu = 1.311 mm(-1), F(000) = 3544, the final R = 0.0418 and wR = 0.0770 for all data. The ring-opening of tetrahydrofuran molecule was proven, the possible mechanism for the formation of N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO)-rare earth complexes was speculated and the electronic and steric properties of SIMes and rare earth amides were discussed. This work provides a better understanding of N-heterocyclic carbene rare earth chemistry.

Abstract:Three complexes, Na4[DyIII(dtpa)(H2O)]2 · 16H2O, Na[DyIII(edta)(H2O)3] · 3.25H2O and Na3[DyIII (nta)2(H2O)] · 5.5H2O, have been synthesized in aqueous solution and characterized by FT–IR, elemental analyses, TG–DTA and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Na4[DyIII(dtpa)(H2O)]2 · 16H2O crystallizes in the monoclinic system with P21/n space group, a = 18.158(10) Å, b = 14.968(9) Å, c = 20.769(12) Å, β = 108.552(9)°, V = 5351(5) Å3, Z = 4, M = 1517.87 g mol−1, D c = 1.879 g cm−3, μ = 2.914 mm−1, F(000) = 3032, and its structure is refined to R 1(F) = 0.0500 for 9384 observed reflections [I > 2σ(I)]. Na[DyIII(edta)(H2O)3] · 3.25H2O crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with Fdd2 space group, a = 19.338(7) Å, b = 35.378(13) Å, c = 12.137(5) Å, β = 90°, V = 8303(5) Å3, Z = 16, M = 586.31 g mol−1, D c = 1.876 g cm−3, μ = 3.690 mm−1, F(000) = 4632, and its structure is refined to R 1(F) = 0.0307 for 4027 observed reflections [I > 2σ(I)]. Na3[DyIII(nta)2(H2O)] · 5.5H2O crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with Pccn space group, a = 15.964(12) Å, b = 19.665(15) Å, c = 14.552(11) Å, β = 90°, V = 4568(6) Å3, Z = 8, M = 724.81 g mol−1, D c = 2.102 g cm−3, μ = 3.422 mm−1, F(000) = 2848, and its structure is refined to R 1(F) = 0.0449 for 4033 observed reflections [I > 2 σ(I)]. The coordination polyhedra are tricapped trigonal prism for Na4[DyIII(dtpa)(H2O)]2 · 16H2O and Na3[DyIII(nta)2(H2O)] · 5.5H2O, but monocapped square antiprism for Na[DyIII(edta)(H2O)3] · 3.25H2O. The crystal structures of these three complexes are completely different from one another. The three-dimensional geometries of three polymers are 3-D layer-shaped structure for Na4[DyIII(dtpa)(H2O)]2 · 16H2O, 1-D zigzag type structure for Na[DyIII(edta)(H2O)3] · 3.25H2O and a 2-D parallelogram for Na3[DyIII(nta)2(H2O)] · 5.5H2O. According to thermal analyses, the collapsing temperatures are 356°C for Na4[DyIII(dtpa)(H2O)]2 · 16H2O, 371°C for Na[DyIII(edta)(H2O)3] · 3.25H2O and 387°C for Na3[DyIII(nta)2(H2O)] · 5.5H2O, which indicates that their crystal structures are very stable.

Abstract:The (NH4)(3) [Yb-III(ttha)]center dot 5H(2)O (I) (H(6)ttha = triethylenetetramine-N,N,N',N ",N"',N"'-hexaacetic acid) and (NH4)[Yb-III(pdta)(H2O)(2)]center dot 5H(2)O (II) (H(4)pdta = propylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid) complexes are synthesized by heat-refluxing and acidity-adjusting methods, and their structures are determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. These two complexes are all mononuclear structures. The complex I crystallizes in ttha monoclinic crystal system with the P2(1)/c space group. The central Yb-III ion is nine-coordinated only by one the ligand, and one non-coordinate carboxyl group is left. The crystal data are as follows: a = 10.321(4) angstrom, b = 12.744(5) angstrom, c = 23.203(9) angstrom, beta = 91.082(6)degrees, V = 3051(2) angstrom(3), Z = 4, D-c = 1.754 g/cm(3), mu = 3.150 mm(-1), F(000) = 1636, R = 0.0357, and wR = 0.0672 for 6203 observed reflections with I >= 2 sigma(I). The YbN4O5 part in the [Yb-III(ttha)](3-) complex anion forms a pseudo-monocapped square antiprismatic polyhedron. The complex II is coordinated with one pdta ligand and two water molecules, which form an eight-coordinate structure, and crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with the P (1) over bar space group. The YbN2O6 part in the [Yb-III(pdta)(H2O)(2)](-) complex anion makes a pseudo-square antiprismatic polyhedron. The crystal data are as follows: a = 9.8923(9) angstrom, b = 10.9627(10) angstrom, c = 12.2618(11) angstrom, alpha = 67.284(5)degrees, beta = 70.956(6)degrees, gamma = 68.741(5)degrees, V = 1115.97(18) angstrom(3), Z = 2, D-c = 1.843 g/cm(3), mu = 4.264 mm(-1), F(000) = 618, R = 0.0177, and wR = 0.0409 for 4036 observed reflections with I >= 2 sigma(I).

Abstract:Two novel ternary rare earth complexes [Ln(3,4-DEOBA)(3)DIPY](2)DIPY (Ln = Er (1), Gd (2); 3,4-DEOBA = 3,4-diethoxybenzoate; DIPY = 2,2'-bipyridine) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray single crystal diffraction. The experiments show that the two complexes are isomorphous with dinuclear structures, and adjacent structure units are stitched together through pi-pi interactions to form 1D chains and 2D-layered supramolecular structures. Simultaneous thermal analysis and Fourier transform infrared detection (TG-FTIR) was used to study the process of the thermal decomposition of the complexes. The molar heat capacity of the two complexes was obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The smoothed values of the average molar heat capacity and thermodynamic functions of the complexes were calculated by the fitted polynomial and thermodynamic equations.
