Abstract:In the simulation of hydrodynamics lubrication using CFD based methods ,cavitation model has remarkable influence on the simulation results .In this paper ,a full‐cavitation model is introduced to improve the current CFD based methods .The influences of different cavitation treatment methods on the distributions of pressure and temperature are studied .Further ,the applicability and accuracy between Reynolds and CFD based methods are compared .The results show that the accuracy of the maximum pressure is improved up to 12 .1%,and the overall pressure distribution is also more close to the experimental data .The temperature distribution with the full‐cavitation model is more realistic . However ,in modeling the bubble collapsing process ,the current full‐cavitation model needs to be improved w hen calculating the temperature distribution in the cavitation area .

Abstract:Finite element method(FEM)was applied to simulate the sound radiation of compressor's shell based on fluid structural interaction(FSI),by which the distribution of pressure could be calculated considering the influence of lubrication oil sound radiation of shell.The structural modal of shell was calculated with different volumes of oil,and far-field was calculated under unit motivation.According to the analysis,the 5th and 10th natural frequencies moved to low frequencies region with increasing the volume of lubrication oil.The major influence of lubrication oil to noise radiation of compressor shell was located between 1000Hz and 2000Hz.Peak value of sound radiation aggrandized as the volume of oil grows in the frequency domain,and the corresponding frequency also moved to high frequencies region.Finally,this conclusion was roughly confirmed by ex- periment,which could provide reference for design of refrigerator compressor.

Abstract:For middle-pressure and high pressure gear pumps, the temperature failure problem of bearings is now of considerable concern due to their heavy loads. A self-circulating oil bearing system has been developed for gear pumps in this paper to solve this problem. A test rig has been designed and built to carry out a series of tests for variable loading directions and rotational speeds. An experimental investigation and numerical model development to predict the behaviour of the self-circulating bearing subjected to different loading directions is described. The experimental and numerical results agree well. It was found that the variation of loading directions has a strong effect on the oil flow rates of the system. The maximum oil flow rate can be achieved when the loading direction is along the hole axis direction and a considerable part of the friction heat can be carried away by the oil. The lubrication of the bearing will also be improved.

Abstract:The transient oil flow field of journal bearing was calculated by using a new mesh movement approach for variable flow calculation based on structured grid in order to reveal the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of rotor-bearing coupling system. A quasi-coupling calculation method of transient fluid dynamics of oil film in journal bearing and rotor dynamics based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was proposed to realize the fluid-structure coupling calculation of rotor and journal bearing. The influences of oil inlet pattern and pressure on flow field of journal bearing were analyzed. The calculation results indicate that the whirling center of the journal relates not only to the rotation speed and static load but also to the vibration amplitude or dynamic load. When increasing the aspect ration or decreasing the clearance ration of journal bearing, the whirling center of the journal is floated upward, which in lead to the instability of rotor-bearing system.

Abstract:According to 1st order slip velocity boundary, Reynolds equation for micro gas journal bearings was given with consideration of effective viscosity under rarefied gas condition. Modified Reynolds equation was solved using the finite difference method. The non-dimensional pressure distribution, load capacities and attitude angles for different reference Knudsen numbers, bearing numbers and eccentricity ratios were obtained. Numerical analysis shows that the effect of effective viscosity on the performance of micro journal bearings is significant and the reference Knudsen number is its crucial factor. When the bearing number is constant, the pressure and load capacities decrease and attitude angle changes inversely with the reference Knudsen number increasing due to the effect of effective viscosity. The larger the eccentricity ratio, the larger the attitude angle gets. When the eccentricity ratio is less than 0.6, the effect of effective viscosity is unobvious. When the eccentricity ratio is constant, decreasing load capacities and increasing attitude angles are resulted from the effect of effective viscosity with increasing bearing numbers. The effect of effective viscosity is unobvious for smaller bearing numbers.
Numerical Investigation for Characteristics and Oil–air Distributions of Oil Film in a Tilting-Pad Journal Bearing

Abstract:This paper analyzes the effects of air in the oil film of a tilting-pad journal bearing on oil–air distributions and characteristics. With a gaseous cavitation model and shear stress transport model with low-Re correction included, the air backflow from the outlet boundary is analyzed in numerical simulations of a titling-pad journal bearing at 3000 r/min rotation speed and under 180 kN load. The simulated bearing load, pressure, and mechanical loss are in good accordance with the experimental data, indicating that the simulation results of the air backflow from the outlet boundary can catch the hydrodynamic characteristics accurately. Based on the turbulence viscosity ratio analysis, the turbulence effect cannot be ignored at the high rotational speed. With the comparison between the unloaded area and the loaded area, the boundary layer and turbulent flow develops with the film thickness increasing. Based on the analyses of simulated air volume fraction and pressure distribution, the gaseous cavitation occurs around the center part of the unloaded area, following the gaseous cavitation mechanisms. The backflow air flows into the low-pressure unloaded area from the outlet boundary and has a clear interval with the air from the gaseous cavitation. The air volume fraction increases with these two air sources and affects the mixture viscosity significantly, eventually influencing the shear stress on the rotor-side wall and bearing mechanical loss.

Abstract:A calculation method for cavitation in journal bearing's oil film was presented based on finite volume method, which could include JFO(Jakobsson, Floberg, Olsson) boundary condition (namely mass conserving boundary condition) automatically, and which was accurate, with good convergence and easy to be solved by programming. By comparing the numerical result of this algorithm with experimental data of previous researchers, it is found that this algorithm can accurately determine the cavitation region and full film region and it is fitted to the fact. At the same time, by means of this calculation method, the influence of the length-diameter ratio, eccentricity and cavitation pressure on the cavitation and pressure distribution is further analyzed, the calculating results indicate that when increasing the length-diameter ratio and eccentricity, the cavitation region and film pressure are increased, the cavitation does not always decreasing the load-carrying capacity of bearings, the pressure value in the cavitation has great effect on the bearing performance.

Non-dimensional pressure distribution, load capacity and attitude angle for microscale gas journal bearings under different reference Knudsen number (the ratio of molecular mean free path to the minimum of gas film thickness), bearing number and eccentricity ratio are obtained. Numerical analysis demonstrates that when the bearing number is constant, the pressure and load capacity decrease and attitude angle changes inversely with the reference Knudsen number increasing. The larger the eccentricity ratio, the larger the change of attitude angle from effective viscosity. When eccentricity ratio is less than 0.6, attitude angle changes softly and the effect of effective viscosity is unobvious. When eccentricity ratio is constant, the influence of effective viscosity on non-dimensional load capacity and attitude angle becomes large with bearing number increasing, and this influence is more prominent with larger reference Knudsen number.

Abstract:Taking a small pressure change in the gas film of self-acting gas-lubricated journal bearings into account, the corresponding nonlinear Reynolds equation is linearized through appropriate approximation and a modified Reynolds equation is derived and solved by means of the finite difference method (FDM). The gas film pressure distribution of a self-acting gas-lubricated journal bearing is attained and the load capacity is calculated. The numerical solution has a better agreement with experimental data than a direct numerical solution for different values of the bearing number. It is of interest to note that the eccentricity ratio, at which the new numerical solution is in better agreement with experimental data, is different when the bearing number is changing. The new numerical solution is slightly larger when the eccentricity ratio is smaller, and becomes slightly smaller when the eccentricity ratio is larger.

Abstract:A numerical study of the non-Newtonian behavior for a finite journal bearing lubricated with micropolar fluids is undertaken considering both thermal and cavitating effects. The modified Reynolds equation and energy equation are derived based on Eringen's micropolar fluid theory. The solution to the modified Reynolds equation is determined using the Elord's cavitation algorithm. The effects of the size of material characteristic length and the coupling number on the thermohydrodynamic performance of a journal bearing are investigated. It is shown, compared with Newtonian fluids, that micropolar fluids exhibit the increase in load capacity and temperature, but the decrease in coefficient of friction and side leakage flow. It is also indicated that, in the full film region, micropolar fluids increase the values of non-dimensional density, while in the cavitated region, both micropolar fluids and Newtonian fluids yield the same values of the fractional film content.

Abstract:The pressure distribution of oil film and the size and position of cavitation zone for a double oil grooved round slid bearing were obtained exactly with Fluent and its cavitation model.They were compared with the results under other boundary conditions.Effects of oil inlet pressure on the flow field and loading capacity of the bearing were discussed.The influence of journal disturbance velocity on flow patterns and oil film pressure were computed unsteadily with an improved dynamic mesh.The results showed that the influence of oil inlet pressure on oil film force is larger;the pressure of oil film changes greatly because of the influence of journal disturbance velocity;the oil film force varies nonlinearly with journal disturbance velocity;the dynamic performance of the bearing can be analyzed better with the improved dynamic mesh.The results provided a basis to analyze nonlinear properties of a rotor-bearing system with a big disturbance and provided a theoretical basis for design of sliding bearings.

Abstract:A numerical study of the performance for a dynamically loaded journal bearing lubricated with couple stress fluids is undertaken. First of all, on the basis of micro-continuum theory, the generalized Reynolds equation for dynamic loads is derived. Then it is simultaneously solved with the force balance equation of the journal, thus obtaining the transient oil film pressure, the transient position and velocity of the journal center. Results from this analysis are presented for a typical engine crankshaft bearing. It is shown, compared with Newtonian lubricants, that under a dynamic loading lubricants with couple stress yield an obvious increase in oil film pressure and oil film thickness, but a decrease in the side leakage flow. Moreover, the effects of couple stress on friction force and friction coefficient vary considerably with time.

Abstract:The addition of the additives to the lubricant oil to enhance the characteristics of the lubricant will influence the performance of the bearings. Based on the theory of micropolar fluids, the tribological characteristics of a dynamically-loaded journal bearing are numerically studied. Comparisons are made between the Newtonian fluids and the micropolar fluids. It is shown that for a dynamically-loaded journal bearing, the micropolar fluids yield an increase not only in the friction force, but also in the friction coefficient. In addition, the oil film pressure and the oil film thickness are obviously higher than that of Newtonian fluids.

Abstract:A theoretical study of a finite grooved journal bearing lubricated with couple stress fluids is made considering both thermal and cavitation effects. On the basis of the Stokes couple stress fluid model, the modified Reynolds equation and the energy equation are derived and then numerically solved together with the heat conduction equation. The solution to the modified Reynolds equation is determined using the Elrod cavitation algorithm. The effects of couple stress on the performance of a journal bearing are investigated. It is observed that the lubricants with couple stress, compared with Newtonian lubricants, not only yield an obvious increase in load capacity and decrease in coefficient of friction but also produce a slight increase in the temperature of lubricants and bush and a slight decrease in the side leakage flow.

Abstract:Cavitation phenomenon in lubricants significantly influences the performance of associated machinery. In this paper, the cavitation mechanism of an oil-film bearing is attributed to gaseous cavitation, and a new gaseous cavitation model based on air solubility in the lubricant is presented. The model is validated using the Reynolds equation algorithm for fixed-geometry oil-film journal bearing, and the predicted results at different eccentricity ratios show good agreement with published data. The analyses show that gaseous mechanism can explain the cavitation phenomena that occur in the bearing except for very heavy load cases. In particular, this new model is compatible with the Jakobsson–Floberg–Olsson condition. Therefore, the new model has an explicit physical meaning, can produce good results, can identify whether vaporous cavitation occurs, and more importantly, can provide a novel means of developing cavitation models for low-vapor-pressure lubricants.

Abstract:The lubricating effectiveness of micropolar fluids in a dynamically loaded journal bearing is studied. On the basis of the theory of micropolar fluids, the modified Reynolds equation for dynamic loads is derived. Results from the numerical analysis indicated that the effects of micropolar fluids on the performance of a dynamically loaded journal bearing depend on the size of material characteristic length and the coupling number. It is shown, compared with Newtonian lubricants, that under a dynamic loading the micropolar lubricants produce an obvious increase in the oil film pressure and oil film thickness, but a decrease in the side leakage flow. It is also shown that the friction coefficient for a dynamically loaded journal bearing with micropolar fluids is in general higher than that of Newtonian fluids, which is not the same as the results for a steadily loaded journal bearing. Furthermore, a parametric study of flow and friction for different mass parameters keeping micropolar parameters fixed is undertaken. It is indicated that, with the increase of the mass parameters, the crank angles corresponding to the maximum flow are changed and the maximum friction coefficients are obviously decreased either for the Newtonian fluids or for the micropolar fluids.

Abstract:The computational fluid dynamics ( CFD) and harmonic excitation method were applied to the numerical calcula-tion of dynamic characteristics of journal bearing. By employing a new mesh movement approach based on structured grid, a new approach for calculating the dynamic characteristics of journal bearing was proposed based on the transient flow calcula-tion. The stiffness and damping coefficients of a typical bearing were calculated by applying the new approach. The results obtained from the method were compared with previous classic computation results. The results show that the computation re-sults of two methods are consistent. The effects of the computational initial value and the oil film fracture phenomenon are considered in this method, which is suitable for most of the journal bearing structures. The numerical method has good accu-racy, and the method is valid.

Abstract:The cavitation model significantly influences the calculational results for oil film bearings.Present cavitation models mainly focus on the characteristics of the oil film pressure profile.The oil cavitation mechanism was used here to develope a cavitation model based on the solubility of air in lubricating oil.The model has been used in computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation of a journal bearing with the calculated results with different eccentricities agreeing well with experimental results,including load capacity,side leakage flow and oil film rupture position.The model is more accurate than the Half-Sommerfeld cavitation model with excellent convergence.
