Abstract:An integrated optical chip fabricated on the substrate of GaAs for optical fiber gyroscope (OFG) was studied. The chip is composed of polarizer, beam splitter, phase modulator and single-mode waveguide. The chip is much smaller than that fabricated on LiNbO3, its overall size is about 22mm��0.5mm.

Abstract:An integrated optical chip for fiber optical gyroscope (FOG) is designed and fabricated on GaAs. To achieve a high modulation efficiency and a small chip size, a deeply etched waveguide structure is employed, and accordingly a multimode interference (MMI) coupler is used as the 1 × 2 power splitter. The size of the chip is about 8.5 mm × 0.5 mm, which is much smaller than that of LiNbO 3 -based chips. The experimental results show that the extinction ratio (ER) of the TE mode to the TM mode is over 26 dB and the value of V π · L of the phase modulators is 18 V · cm. The method to further lower V π is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically analyze the wavelength temperature stability of multifunctional integrated optical chips (MIOCs) applied on fiber optic gyroscopes (FOGs). This study is critical for improving the temperature stability of the FOG scale factor, which is a significant parameter used to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of FOGs. Analytical and multiphysics simulations uncover two significant new predictions. First, changes in environmental temperature can lead to misalignment of the coupling structure between the chip and fiber, which is the main reason for the deterioration of the MIOC wavelength temperature stability. Second, misalignment caused by temperature changes is related to the initial alignment parameters of the coupling structure. Therefore, we can effectively improve the wavelength temperature stability of an MIOC by correctly choosing the initial alignment state of the coupling structure. Space coupling experiments are also presented to verify these predictions, and the experimental and simulation results are in good agreement.

Abstract:An integrated optical chip (IOC) is the phase modulation actuator in a closed-loop interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG). Research on temperature characteristic of IOC is meaningful for high-precision IFOG working in harsh environment. We focus on the temperature modeling of the IOC modulation phase error. In theoretical analysis, based on the temperature dependence of the IOC equivalent capacitance, a model between IOC modulation phase error and temperature is proposed. Through experiments, the variation tendency of the IOC equivalent capacitance with temperature is first presented. Subsequently, the IOC modulation phase error is demonstrated to be linear with temperature, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed model. Abstract:In this paper, multi-core fiber (MCF) is integrated in interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG) as the sensing coil to improve its sensitivity without increasing the fiber length or Shupe error. We have used a 300-m long 7 -core fiber and connected 4 cores of MCF to each other by fan-in and fan-out (FIFO) devices of fused taper in closed-loop IFOG to replace the traditional single-core fiber (SCF). Before experiment, the main benefits and certain possible problems of using MCF are explained and analyzed. The angular random walk (ARW) of 0.006 degrees/ root h and drift of 0.01 degrees /h have been achieved, which is close to the performance of IFOG using the 1200-m long SCF. Besides having a lower Shupe sensitivity, the MCF-IFOG also has small crosstalk effect when using broadband light source. The results show that the scheme of MCF for IFOG is expected to be used in practical application in the foreseeable future.

Abstract:We present the design and fabrication of an on-chip FBG interrogator based on arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) technology. The spectral overlap between adjacent channels in the integrated AWG is significantly enhanced through a combination approach involving the reduction of the output waveguide spacing and an increase in the input waveguide width. As a result of these design choices, our AWG demonstrates excellent spectral consistency, with spectral cross talk exceeding 30 dB. The interrogator seamlessly combining optical and circuitry components achieves full integration and enables a wide range of interrogation wavelengths, including C-band and L-band. With an interrogation range extending up to 80 nm, it theoretically has the capacity to simultaneously interrogate the wavelengths of 20 FBG sensors. Experimental findings demonstrate an absolute interrogation accuracy of less than 2 pm for the fully integrated interrogator. With its compact size, cost-effectiveness, exceptional precision, and ease of integration, the proposed interrogator holds a substantial promise for widespread application in the realm of FBG sensing. Abstract:In this paper, we present a full description of the design and fabrication of a compact spot-size converter (SSC) applied to interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes (IFOGs). The obtained SSC has a length of 500 um and a coupling efficiency of 52%. The polarization dependency of the SSC is less than 0.1 dB, and the variation tendencies of our experimental results agree well with a simulation. The SSC possesses many properties suitable for various optical communication and sensing systems, including small size, high coupling efficiency, integration, and high stability.

Abstract:Chip-scale interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG) has caught growing attention for its huge application potential in the low-cost consumer electronics market. In this article, a novel three-axis IFOG is proposed and assembled with an integrated coupler chip (ICC) fabricated on the silica platform. The ICC realizes bidirectionally multichannel optical interconnection without waveguide crossings. The test results indicate the weak wavelength dependence and comparatively low insertion loss at $0.85 mu ext{m}$ of the ICC. With $sim $ 900-m polarization-maintaining fiber coils, the three-axis IFOG exhibits a long-term stability of $< 0.16^{circ }$ /h, which satisfies the requirements of the tactical grade systems. The novel IFOG scheme with ICC paves the way for the research on chip-scale multiaxis IFOGs.

Abstract:In this paper,a method to fabricate silicon-on-glass(SOG) materials for the applications of integrated optics and photonics is proposed.Anodic silicon-glass boning and selective etching are applied.Experiments and measurement show that the surface quality of SOG materials mainly depends on the used silicon-on-insulator(SOI) wafers.When the SIMOX-based SOI wafers are used,the RMS roughness of the SOG surface will be about 3 nm and the auto-correlation length will be about 100 nm.The propagation loss of the SOG-based rib waveguides is at the same level of the employed SOI materials.The SOG material have the capabilities of SOI materials and can also be used for the applications in which the lower interface of the silicon core can be processed or the lower cladding is required to be thick.

Abstract:MOEMS gyroscope with high sensitivity, all solid-state and integrated manufacturing is a new generation of inertia device in the future development. It is urgent in deep space exploration, manned spacecrsft and guidance technology of spacecraft. In this paper, inertial measurement method and system infrastructure were proposed which were based on the output characteristics of transmission spectra of optical waveguide micro-cavity. And the inertial measurement principle, micro-processing technology as well as the coupling properties were discussed. Design parameters of waveguide coupling system were obtained and optimized by use of numerical fitting. Roughness on the waveguide was reduced by the technology of laser melting and heat treatment. Up to 108 of the quality factor of the micro-cavity was obtained in the test. It lays the foundation for manufacturing of integrated optical waveguide gyro with chip-scale and all-solid.
Design and Analysis of Ingaas Pin Photodetectors Integrated on Silicon-On-Insulator Racetrack Resonators

Abstract:The integration of optical functionalities on a chip has been a long standing goal in the optical community. The ability to integrate compound semiconductors onto foreign substrates can lead to superior or novel functionalities. In this paper we integrate InGaAs/InP photodetectors onto Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) racetrack resonators. The racetrack resonators can be fabricated by utilizing electron beam lithography and inductively-coupled-plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE) technique. The racetrack structure is used for wavelength selectivity and the straight waveguide sections are used to achieve a large value of the coupling coefficient with a bus waveguide. The transmission characteristic of the racetrack resonator with a multimode interference (MMI) coupler has been numerically simulated. The result shows that the free spectral range (FSR) is inversely proportional to the length of the racetrack resonator. The FSR decreases as the increase of the length of straight waveguide sections or the radius of rings. The generalized multimode transmission matrix of the MMI has been evaluated with beam-propagation method. It has been found that the resonance wavelength can be reasonably predicted. Finally, the equation of quantum efficiency of the device is derived. The calculated peak quantum efficiency of the designed photodetector can achieve about 90 % at 1.5499 mu m.

Abstract:Resonant integrated optical gyroscopes (RIOGs) can integrate discrete optical components as a promising candidate for high-performance micro-optical gyroscopes. However, the current RIOG still consists of discrete elements due to the difficulty and complexity of heterogeneous integration of resonator and modulators. This paper presents on-chip integration of optical functional components including modulator, resonator, beam splitter, and coupler for the organic-polymer-based RIOG. Simple integrated optical processes such as spin coating, lithography, and etching can realize RIOG chips with low cost, size, weight, and power (CSWaP) features. Thereinto, the electro-optic modulator (EOM) fabricated by self-synthesized electro-optic (EO) polymer (side chain bonded polyurethane imide) exhibits less than 2 V half-wave voltage, which is half of the lithium niobate (LiNbO3) modulator. With respect to the resonator, a quality factor of approximately million was achieved using low-loss fluorinated polymer. In addition, the angular velocity sensing of RIOG was also investigated. By demonstrating the monolithic integration of the resonator and modulators, such an all-polymer RIOG chip prototype builds the technical foundation for the precision fully integrated optical gyroscope.

Abstract:The miniaturization of the gyroscope is critical for spacecrafts, drones, wellbore surveys, etc. The resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) is a competitive candidate due to its potential in both miniaturization and high resolution, while its actual performance is well below expectation because of laser-induced noise and complexity. Here we report the first navigation grade RFOG with a bias instability of 0.009°/h and an angle random walk of 0.0093°/ h . The results are realized using a fiber resonator with finesse of 63 containing 100-m long fiber. Compared with the traditional RFOGs using narrow-linewidth lasers, the key feature of the proposed RFOG is that it is driven with a broadband light source. A white-light multibeam interference method is proposed to detect the Sagnac effect, representing the simplest scheme of RFOG to date. The complexity caused by multiple feedback loops and coherent noise suppression in traditional RFOG scheme is avoided. The minimal scheme and simple modulation algorithm will also promote the on-chip waveguide gyroscope.

Abstract:Re-entrant fiber optic gyro (Re-FOG), using a shorter Sagnac sensitive ring (SSR), makes parts of the two counter-propagandizing lights re-enter the ring before they interference with each other when they reach the photo-detector. Multiple-integrated-optic-chip (MIOC) is one of the most important components of a Re-FOG. In this paper, the principle of the Re-FOG is first reviewed. A method of measuring the half-wave voltage is presented. The thermal induced change of half-wave voltage was tested.

Abstract:A monolithic optoelectronic integrated circuit chip on a silicon-on-insulator is designed and fabricated based on complementary metal oxide semiconductor compatible technology. The chip integrates an optical Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a CMOS driving circuit with the amplification function. Test results show that the extinction ratio of the MZM is close to 20 dB and the small-signal gain of the CMOS driving circuit is about 26.9 dB. A 50 mV 10 MHz sine wave signal is amplified by the driving circuit, and then drives the MZM successfully.

Abstract:Based on polymeric materials, the possibilities of monolithic integration of various optical waveguide components are discussed and, especially, the efforts to realize the functions of optical modulation and amplification on a single optical chip are made. Exploration of more capabilities of optical waveguides is also emphasized. The work on exploring functions of optical waveguides for the applications in WDM components and photonic phased-array radar systems are presented and multifunctional optical waveguide chips with the explored functions are fabricated.
