Abstract:A new discharge technique for exciting the diffusion-cooled CO2 lasers was proposed. Using a square wave discharge power source operating at 30kHz, a uniform stable glow discharge has been obtained in the volume of 5mm��30mm��446mm and the output power is 10W.

Abstract:In longitudinal pulse discharge excited Sr+, Ca+ recombination laser, the discharge current pulse waveform of three different discharge circuits were measured and analyzed respectively. It is found that using non-symmetrical Blumlein circuit, the after low oscillation of the discharge current pulse can be effectively eliminated. The average output power and single pulse energy of the laser can be increased.

Abstract:Based on the kinetic process of UV Cu+ laser in longitudinal nanosecond-pulsed discharge, the necessary condition for the population inversion between the upper and lower laser levels has been obtained. The experimental phenomenon that the laser power increases rapidly with the decrease of the discharge tube aperture has been analyzed theoretically. It is pointed out that the radiation trapping of lower laser level could be restrained effectively by reducing the tube radius, resulting in the increase of depopulation rate of lower laser level and the laser power.

Abstract:CO2 laser-driven electron acceleration in low-density plasma is demonstrated using particle-in-cell simulation. An intense CO2 laser pulse of long wavelength excites a wake bubble that has a large elongated volume for accelerating a large number of electrons before reaching the charge saturation limit. A transversely injected laser pulse is used to induce and control the electron injection. It is found that an electron bunch with total charge up to 10 nC and absolute energy spread less than 16 MeV can be obtained. As a result, the charge per energy interval of the bunch reaches up to 0.6 nC/MeV. Intense CO2-laser based electron acceleration can provide a new direction for generating highly charged electron bunches with low energy spread, which is of much current interest, especially for table-top X-ray generation.

Abstract:It was first reported that by putting a ��/2 phase plate inside the cavity (instead of outside), the multi-mode oscillation can be effectively restrained so that a new beam output can be realized efficiently on a CO2 laser with a tube length L=900mm, tube diameter D=9mm, R1=��, R2=3m, and a discharge length=800mm. This approach provides the possibility for not only the birth of a new generation CO2 lasers but also the improvement of other types of lasers.

Abstract:In order to achieve the highest peak power of radiation pulse and highest output energy, the primary circuit parameters are investigated to optimize the discharge circuit performance of the laser. The structure and the discharge circuit of the laser are discussed at first. To realize synchronous discharge in two discharge channels, the conjunct electrode device for two pairs of discharge electrodes is designed. Finally, the results of the experiments on the primary circuit parameters are given. The discharge is most stable at a pressure of 5.33 x 10(4)Pa when the pressure of gaseous mixture CO2:N-2:He=1:1:3 is changed from 2.67 x 10(4) Pa to 6.67 x 10(4) Pa. The ratio of storage capacitance to peak capacitance is chosen to be about 1.5-7/3, because residual voltage is lower on this condition and residual voltage is adverse to discharge. When the inductance 330 mu H is used, the homogeneous glow discharge in a widest voltage range is obtained. The duration of charge and discharge and the magnitude of residual voltage decrease when the stimuli voltage is increased in homogeneous glow discharge condition. The discharge circuit allows the homogeneous glow discharge in a wide range of pressure of gaseous mixture when these circuit parameters are used. Thus it offers reference to the improvement of output characteristic of TEA CO2 laser with two discharge channels.

Abstract:A simple physical picture for producing the new beam CO2 lasers was put forward, and based on which, a new beam intracavity CO2 laser was successfully developed recently with a cavity length of 500mm, a discharge-region-length of 420mm, output of 17W, and its equivalent beam-quality-factor M2=0.26. If the concept on the ��equivalent M2�� is reasonable, then it becomes possible to make the CO2 lasers with their output beyond the limitation set by the diffraction restriction.

A transversely propagating inject pulse is used to induce and control the ambient electron injection. The accelerated electron bunch with total charge up to 10 nC and the average charge per energy interval of more than 0.6 nC/MeV are obtained. Plasma-based electron acceleration driven by intense CO2 laser provides a new potential way to generate high-charge electron bunch with low energy spread, which has broad applications, especially for X-ray generation by table-top FEL and bremsstrahlung.

Abstract:A change of discharge current is observed in CO2 plasma by irradiation with a Q-switched CO2 laser. It is elucidated that the increase of the discharge current just after the incidence of laser pulse is a correlated effect with an amplification mechanism of the laser pulse power. Evidence is also presented to support an interpretation that the rise and decay times of the current change produced by the laser pulse are effective measures of the relaxation times of the vibrational levels (10°0) and (00°1) of CO2 molecules in plasma. The effect of foreign gases is also examined.

Abstract:Laser plasma interaction with micro-engineered targets at relativistic intensities has been greatly promoted by recent progress in the high contrast lasers and the manufacture of advanced micro- and nano-structures. This opens new possibilities for the physics of laser-matter interaction. Here we propose a novel approach that leverages the advantages of high-pressure CO$_{2}$ laser, laser-waveguide interaction, as well as micro-engineered plasma structure to accelerate electrons to peak energy greater than 1 GeV with narrow slice energy spread ($\sim1\%$) and high overall efficiency. The acceleration gradient is 26 GV/m for a 1.3 TW CO$_{2}$ laser system. The micro-bunching of a long electron beam leads to the generation of a chain of ultrashort electron bunches with the duration roughly equal to half-laser-cycle. These results open a way for developing a compact and economic electron source for diverse applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on continuous wave tunable CO2 lasers, which could be used in good pumping source of optically pumped gas THz laser. A series of comparative experiments to investigate the effects of cavity structure and discharge current on laser tunability and output power was conducted. The wavelength selection of CO2 lasers primarily achieved by altering the angle of incidence of the blazing grating. Two enclosed CO2 laser tubes were designed and customized, one was used for external cavity structure and the other was used for semi-external cavity structure research. Using the semi-external cavity structure, 78 lines was obtained at the range of 9-11μm, and achieved 60.7 W of laser output power at a wavelength of 10.59 μm. A beam quality factor of M2 = 1.68 was measured using the traveling 90/10 knife-edge method.

The characteristics of the laser arrays have been studied and the output power is 20 W when the gain length is 380 nm. The two-dimensional array has the advantages of simple construction, easy to fabricate, low cost. It opens a new way for the compact high power laser development.

Abstract:采用旋转光栅法实现了声光调Q CO2激光器可调谐脉冲激光输出。理论分析了CO2激光波长调谐特性，发现调节各支谱线腔内损耗是实现激光波长调谐的有效方法。进而理论计算了特定设计波长闪耀光栅的衍射效率与激光波长间的关系，结果显示光栅调谐的激光谱线自准直角与光栅闪耀角一致时具有最高的衍射效率。采用闪耀角分别为31.97（闪耀波长10.59 m）和28.71（闪耀波长9.60 m）的光栅实验研究了声光调Q CO2激光器波长调谐特性，分别获得了65条和75条激光谱线。实验结果显示：光栅设计闪耀波长处于弱激光增益分支时可获得更多条激光谱线，该实验与理论计算结果相符。在脉冲重复频率为1 kHz时，获得10.59 m激光脉冲宽度为160 ns，平均功率4.2 W，脉冲峰值功率26.25 kW，且稳定性良好。

Abstract:A 320 W new beam carbon dioxide laser was developed on the basis of �� phase jump principle. It is equivalent to common 700W carbon dioxide laser. The distribution of optical intensity of the new beam carbon dioxide laser was shown by graph, and the difference between the new beam and Gauss beam was studied by transformation focusing experiments. The results may be used to improve the quality of high power carbon dioxide laser.

Abstract:An experimental study of a rapidly tuning miniature transversely excited atmospheric-pressure CO2 laser is reported. To rapidly shift laser wavelengths over selected transitions in the 9-11 microm wavelength region, we have utilized a high-frequency stepping motor and a diffraction grating. The laser is highly automated with a monolithic microprocessor controlled laser line selection. For the achievement of stable laser output, a system of laser excitation with a voltage of 10 kV, providing effective surface corona preionization and allowing one to work at various gas pressures, is utilized. Laser operation at 59 emission lines of the CO2 molecule rotational transition is obtained and at 51 lines, the pulse energy of laser radiation exceeds 30 mJ. The system can be tuned between two different rotational lines spanning the wavelength range from 9.2 to 10.8 microm within 10 ms.

Abstract:Laser-induced filaments have been shown to reduce the voltage necessary to initiate electrical discharges in atmospheric air and guide their propagation over long distances. Here we demonstrate the stable generation of laser filament-guided electrical discharge columns in air initiated by high energy (up to 250 mJ) 1030 nm wavelength laser pulses of 7 ps duration at repetition rates up to 1 kHz and we discuss the processes leading to breakdown. A current proportional to the laser pulse energy is observed to arise as soon as the laser pulse arrives, initiating a high impedance phase of the discharge. Full breakdown, characterized by impedance collapse, occurs 100 ns to several µs later. A record 4.7-fold reduction in breakdown voltage for dc-biased discharges, which remains practically independent of the repetition rate up to 1 kHz, is observed to be primarily caused by a single laser pulse that produces a large (∼80%) density depression. The radial gaps between the filamentary plasma channel and the hollowed electrodes employed are shown to play a significant role in the breakdown dynamics. A rapid increase of 3-4 orders of magnitude in current is observed to follow the formation of localized radial current channels linking the filament to the electrodes. The increased understanding and control of kHz repetition rate filament-guided discharges can aid their use in applications.

Abstract:A new-style discharge tube for metal vapor laser has been designed and built. The infrared barium vapor laser of two wavelengths at 1.13 μm and 1.50μm was first obtained in inland while barium was used as a laser medium. The laser components were concentrated on the 1.50μm wavelength. The maximum laser output power and power density were 1.2W and 33.3mW/cm3 respectively. Dependences of some parameters on laser output characteristics have been measured and discussed.
Analysis of Kinetics of a Mechanical Q-Switched CO_2 Laser with Longitudinal DC Discharge

Abstract:A fast chopper was used to set up a simple mechanical Q-switched CO2 laser with longitudinal DC discharge.The laser pulse with peak power 1~2 kW,repetition rate to 740 Hz,pulse width 200~300 ns,was realized.The dynamical process of Q-switching for the simple mechanical Q-switched CO2 laser was simulated by a six-temperature model.The effects of the dynamical parameters such as the dissociation of CO2 molecules,the electron density in the cavity(the discharge current) on the output laser intensity were reported.Q-switched output pulse shape,pulse peak power and pulse width were calculated.The theoretical analysis is well consistent with the experimental result.

Abstract:Simultaneous oscillation of resonance-metastable transition laser in calcium atoms and ions was obtained in a discharge tube with 1.3cm inner diameter and 46cm electrode separation through longitudinal high frequency pulse discharge.The maximum laser output power and laser efficiency reach 1.1W and 0.1 percent respectively.Laser output characteristics depend on various working parameters and the ratio of Pi/Pa were measured and analyzed.
