Abstract:Humid Air Turbine (HAT) cycle is one of the most efficient humidified gas turbine cycle that shows the potential to be competitive with combined cycle The humidifier is the distinctive component of the HAT cycle, and the air humidification process is of significance for the overall performance. However, due to the lack of reliable mass transfer coefficient, the existing theoretical model of the humidifier cannot reflect the actual humidification process. This work focuses on a method to estimate the heat transfer coefficient for the humidification process based on experimental data. The global and local mass transfer coefficients are obtained, respectively. The results show that the segmented simulation with the local mass transfer coefficients (SL-2) is significantly better than the overall simulation with the global mass transfer coefficients (SL-1). The mass transfer coefficient (hD) distributed along the height of the humidifier is obtained. At the bottom and the top of the humidifier, the sensible heat transfer and the latent heat transfer dominates the air humidification, respectively. In the packing segment of the humidifier, the heat transfer has low effectiveness of 43%, but the exergy efficiency is 96%. At the top and bottom of the humidifier, the effectiveness of heat transfer is higher than 70%, but the exergy efficiency at the bottom of the humidifier is lower than 20%. Adopting appropriate inlet air and water temperature are the available methods to reduce the exergy loss. The thermodynamic analysis in this work can provide a basis for optimizing HAT cycle configuration and humidifier structure.

Abstract:With the humidifier of a humid air turbine (HAT) cycle serving as an objective of study similarity conditions are discussed during the conduct of experimental research. Under simplified conditions equations of control of multi-phase flows in the humidifier were established along with corresponding boundary conditions. These equations were subjected to a non-dimensionalized treatment. On the basis of an invariance principle of differential equations similarity criteria were deduced, which the humidifier shall comply with during the experimental research. Some explanations are given concerning the role being played by these criteria during experiments. Moreover, some major issues requiring due attention during the tests of the humidifier are also presented.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel hybrid vapor injection cycle (HVIC) with subcooler and flash tank for air-source heat pumps is proposed. In the HVIC, an ejector is applied to realize the advantages of both the subcooler and flash tank vapor injection, which can efficiently reduce the irreversible thermodynamic loss and improve the system performance, especially at low ambient temperature conditions. The performance enhancement potential of HVIC is compared with conventional subcooler vapor injection cycle (SVIC) and flash tank vapor injection cycle (FTVC) using cycle simulations. The simulation results indicated that for the HVIC using R290 as refrigerant, the coefficient of performance (COP) and the volumetric heating capacity can be increased by 2.8-3.3% and 6.4-8.8% compared to the SVIC system, 1.1-2.0% and 3.2-6.0% compared to the FTVC system, respectively. In addition, improving the ejector efficiencies and adjusting the injection pressure could also enhance the performance of HVIC. Exergy analysis indicates that the total exergy destruction for the HVIC is lower than that of SVIC and FTVC due to the application of an ejector, and therefore resulting in higher exergy efficiency. Overall, the HVIC could be more effective to enhance heating capacity and system efficiency. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The humid air turbine (HAT) cycle utilizes the low-temperature heat from the gas turbine exhaust to humidify the air, thereby increasing the specific output work. The air humidification process has a significant impact on gas turbine efficiency. So far, there is still a lack of reliable experimental data from gas-liquid two-phase flow, which limits the in-depth study of the air humidification process. In this work, the new multi-point gas–liquid two-phase temperature and relative humidity measurement system suitable for countercurrent pressurized humidifier is re-designed, the temperature and relative humidity distributions of humid air and the water temperature distribution are obtained along the height of humidifier. The effects of the water–air ratio and inlet water temperature on the humidification process are thoroughly investigated. The water–air ratio has little effect on the outlet air temperature, and it has a significant effect on the air and water temperature in the packing segment, and the relative humidity and absolute humidity increase as the water–air ratio increases. The outlet air temperature and water temperature increase as the inlet water temperature improves. The sooner the air reaches saturation and the absolute humidity increases more significantly at higher inlet water temperature. Vapor condensation occurs at the interface during the humidification process. Besides, the outlet water temperature can be cooled to be lower than the wet bulb temperature of the inlet air, but always higher than the dew point temperature of the inlet air. The measurement data provide an experimental basis for studying the heat and mass transfer inside the humidifier.

Analysis of a Hybrid System of Adiabatic Absorption two-stage Liquid Desiccant and CO2 Transcritical Cycles

Abstract:A novel hybrid system of adiabatic absorption two-stage liquid desiccant and CO2 transcritical cycles is proposed,where LiCl solutions are used as desiccants. Dissipated heat of the transcritical cycle is used to regenerate LiCl solutions, and the heat could be utilized efficiently with large temperature decrease. From insight of thermodynamics, model of the hybrid system is built. Based on the calculation results, temperatures of the utilized heat could range from 120℃ to 50℃. In addition, temperature and humidity independence control could be conducted by the hybrid system and its evaporation temperatures could be obviously lifted. From the analysis, the dehumidification rate of the first dehumidifier increases when the moisture contents of ambient air increases. COP of the two-stage liquid desiccant cycle could be lifted when the temperature of LiCl solutions decreases and the concentration of LiCl solutions increases at the inlet of first dehumidifier. Available dissipated heat and evaporation temperature are closely related of the hybrid system. There is a critical evaporation temperature that makes the available dissipated heat to fully meet the need for regeneration of the hybrid system. Comparing with cooling dehumidification by a conventional CO2 transcritical cycle, under the same dehumidification capacity, COP of the transcritical cycle could be improved by 5.6％ and compression work could be decreased by 29％.

Abstract:Humid air turbine (HAT) cycle is an intercooled, regenerated cycle with a saturator that adds considerable moisture to the compressor discharge air. It has been identified as a promising way of generating electric power at high efficiency and low cost. Two kinds of HAT cycles were studied. The difference between the two cycles is whether the makeup water is mixed at the same temperature. For both configurations, the selection and optimization of the main cycle parameters were discussed. The reversible air/water mixing mechanism realized in the saturator allows HAT cycles where water is mixed at the same temperature to achieve the efficiencies about 3 percent higher than those of HAT cycles where water is mixed at different temperatures.

Abstract:Nowadays, the issues of the energy and environment become more and more serious with the demand of energy increasing drastically. The advanced gas turbine cycles provide the opportunities to solve these issues. Humid air turbine (HAT) cycle, which is one of the most promising cycles with high efficiency, low emissions and low unit investment costs, is a prominent representation of the advanced gas turbine cycles. In this paper, an aero-derivative three-shaft gas turbine was converted to the HAT cycle. The aero-derivative is one of the most efficient simple cycles, whose system efficiency can reach 40%. And it is an effective solution to transform the advanced technology from the aeronautical filed to the industrial application. In order to investigate the performance of the HAT cycle, the saturator model was established based on the saturation curve and the saturator working line. Additionally, it was validated that the saturator model was consistent with the steady state experimental results very well. The maximum error of the outlet air temperature is less than 0.8% and the maximum error of the outlet air humidity is less than 1.9%. Three different HAT cycle systems were designed and simulated on the MATLAB platform. The thermodynamic performance of the three HAT systems on the design point shows that case 2 is the better one, which means that the aftercooler does not have obvious benefits for system performance and NOx emissions. Then, the effects of the ambient temperature on the case 2 and simple cycle were investigated. The results show that the HAT cycle has the more favorable off-design performance than the simple cycle when the ambient temperature is changed.

Abstract:Due to the fact that the turbine outlet temperature of aeroderivative three-shaft gas turbine is low, the conventional combined cycle is not suitable for three-shaft gas turbines. However, the humid air turbine (HAT) cycle provides a new choice for aeroderivative gas turbine because the humidification process does not require high temperature. Existing HAT cycle plants are all based on single-shaft gas turbines due to their simple structures, therefore converting aeroderivative three-shaft gas turbine into HAT cycle still lacks sufficient research. This paper proposes a HAT cycle model on a basis of an aeroderivative three-shaft gas turbine. Detailed HAT cycle modelling of saturator, gas turbine and heat exchanger are carried out based on the modular modeling method. The models are verified by simulations on the aeroderivative three-shaft gas turbine. Simulation results show that the studied gas turbine with original size and characteristics could not reach the original turbine inlet temperature because of the introduction of water. However, the efficiency still increases by 0.16% when the HAT cycle runs at the designed power of the simple cycle. Furthermore, simulations considering turbine modifications show that the efficiency could be significantly improved. The results obtained in the paper can provide reference for design and analysis of HAT cycle based on multi-shaft gas turbine especially the aeroderivative gas turbine.

Abstract:An experimental investigation of the thermodynamic performance of a counter-flow spray humidifier was conducted on the basis of theoretical analysis of the heat and mass transfer mechanism inside the humidifier. Critical parameters such as the temperature and relative humidity of air and the temperature of water at the inlet and outlet were measured. The influence of every measured parameter on the thermal performance of the humidifier was obtained under different experimental conditions. The cooling number, whose variation was also obtained, was calculated according to the measured data. The experimental results show that both the temperature and the temperature increment of outlet humid air and the temperature of outlet water increase with an increase of the water-gas ratio, whereas the cooling number decreases. Under all experimental conditions, the outlet humid air reaches or is close to the saturation level. The lower cooling number is favorable for the system, but it has an optimal value for a certain humidifier.

Abstract:This paper presents one-dimensional thermodynamic model of saturator on the basis of the analysis of heat and mass transfer process.The calculation procedure can be simplified by introducing general mass transfer coefficient CC.With the saturator experiment,this model has been proved to be higher precision and better description of the internal humidified process.It also can be applied in the saturator with packing.The performance curve diagram is very helpful to design and study on operation performance of the saturator and the mechanism of heat-mass transfer.

Abstract:In order to study in details the humidifying performance of humidifier in HAT cycle, a test system of countercurrent spray humidifier, suitable to study its inner-field using 3D laser PDA, is designed and constructed. The pressure losses, made by the structure of humidifier and the spray field, are measured in this test system. The exit temperatures of air and droplets, the evaporation rate of droplets and the relative humidity along the height of humidifier etc. are investigated under different temperatures, flux and relative humidity of air and different temperatures and flux of water. The influences of inlet parameters of air and water on heating and humidifying of humidifier are analyzed. Some thermocouples used in measuring the temperature of air phase and liquid phase is designed and made. The temperatures of air phase and liquid phase at several positions in the humidifier are measured. It is found in the research that the higher counter flow velocity of the droplets and air, the more helpful in heat and mass transfer, but the high velocity will bring a lot of small droplets into regenerator and combustor where those small droplets absorb heat of high quality that causes a reduction of the efficiency of system. Water temperature rising and to increase the water/gas ration will be helpful in heating and humidifying. Aparting from the nozzle, that temperature difference of water and air will be reduced and in a certain position, both temperature will be lower than that in the inlet air

Abstract:Humid air turbine cycle (HAT) has potential of electrical efficiencies comparable to combined cycle, with lower investment cost and NO x emission. The typical heat exchanger network of HAT consists of intercooler (if there is), aftercooler, recuperator, economizer and humidifier, which brings higher efficiency but makes the system more complex. To simplify HAT layout, a novel humidifier concept is proposed by integrating the aftercooler into traditional counter-current humidifier. Based on this concept, a one-dimensional model including pressure drop and exergy calculation is established to distinguish the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic characteristics, and then the structural parameters, such as the number of rows and columns, tube diameter, pitch and type for a micro HAT are identified. The results show that the aftercool-humidifier plays the same role as original aftercooler and humidifier, and can match the in-tube air, out-tube air and water stream well with lower volume. In the case of micro HAT cycle, the volume of heat and mass transfer area can be reduced by 47% compared with traditional design. The major thermal resistance occurred in the convection heat transfer process inside the tube; however, using enhanced tube cannot effectively improve the compactness of device.

Abstract:This paper presents a calculation model of thermodynamic properties for the humid work gases of humid air turbine(HAT).Based on a micro two-shaft gas turbine,the experiments of the performance of HAT cycle are carried out.The results show that the humidification of air has a significant effect on system performance,and the specific power and cycle efficiency are greatly improved compared to those of a simple cycle.Simulation results according to the test conditions can fit well with experimental results.

Abstract:Humid Air Turbine (HAT) cycle that uses a water-air mixture as a working fluid has a significant advantage in the distributed generation technologies and combined heat and power. The feature of the HAT cycle is that air humidification is carried out at a variable temperature. This cycle is considered as one of the optimal humidified gas turbine cycles to achieve the energy cascade utilization. However, most studies typically use the method of a single variable to investigate the coupled process of humidification and heat recovery, which limits the further performance improvement of the HAT cycle. Herein, we study the interactions among air humidification, heat recovery and system performance to elaborate the effects of interactive variables on the HAT cycle performance. Considering the complexity of the interaction of water-air ratio, aftercooler effectiveness and recuperator effectiveness, a thorough numerical analysis was carried out from the following perspectives: the thermodynamic correlation between components and systems was investigated by controlling a single parameter; the interaction of multiple variables was performed with identical turbine inlet temperature (TIT) and pressure ratio (PR) conditions; and the coupling relationship between interactive variables with a variation of TIT and PR conditions. A thorough analysis revealed that the variables that significantly impact the HAT cycle efficiency are successively RE, W/A, and AE. The analysis of the coupling effects of interactive variables under different TITs is consistent with the above results. As the PR increases, the W/A and AE have a more significant effect on HAT cycle efficiency and the effect of RE on the HAT cycle efficiency greatly diminishes. The HAT cycle efficiency, specific work output, and heat recovery achieved 43.9%, 556 kJ/kg, 5505.33 kW, where its corresponding TIT, PR, W/A, AE, RE values are 1280 °C, 8, 1.5,0.75, 0.9, respectively. Overall, a thorough analysis of interactive variables is of great significance to fully understand the effect of heat recovery on the efficiency enhancement and specific work output improvement from the thermodynamic perspective.

Abstract:Humid Air Turbine (HAT) cycle is considered to be one of the most advanced gas turbine cycles due to its high efficiency, flexible operation, low NO X emissions, and low investment cost. The heat recovery determines the temperature field distribution of the humidification process, which is critical to the performance of the HAT cycle. However, so far, the effect of heat recovery of heat exchangers on cycle performance is still a research gap. Filling up the research gap is of great significance to the full utilization of the thermodynamic potential of the HAT cycle. This paper built a humid air turbine cycle with additional heat exchangers (aftercooler, regenerator, economizer) based on a humid air turbine test rig. A comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of the effectiveness of the heat exchanger components had been carried out. To conclude, the water–air ratio, aftercooler effectiveness and regenerator effectiveness can effectively affect the humidification performance and efficiency. The above analysis provided a theoretical reference for the actual transformation and performance enhancement of the test rig. In addition, research on the influence of the water–air ratio on the HAT cycle at different power outputs showed that the optimal water–air ratio gradually decreases with the increase of power output. The effect of the pressure ratio on the HAT cycle was clarified by comparison with a simple regenerative cycle. Finally, exergy analysis of the HAT cycle was carried out based on different optimization strategies. For the humid air turbine of 4 MW-class, increasing recuperator effectiveness is one of the effective techniques to enhance exergy recovery as well as efficiency, and improving the proportion of exergy utilized for water evaporation can augment specific work output. The maximum efficiency of 48.5% was obtained where its corresponding exergy efficiency reaches 44.4%. The maximum specific work output of 560.6 kJ/kg was achieved with an exergy efficiency of 38.0%.

Abstract:A number of experiments of the humidifying performance of a counter flow spray saturator (CFSS) for a humid air turbine (HAT) cycle are conducted in this work. The critical parameters, such as the temperature and relative humidity of the humid air and the temperature of the water droplets in the saturator as well as its inlet and outlet, are measured. The absolute humidity of the humid air at every measuring location and the evaporative capacity between two measuring locations along with the height of the saturator are obtained according to these measured data. The temperature of the outlet humid air increases with increasing water-gas ratio, and the outlet humid air reaches or is close to the saturation level. On the whole, the temperature and relative humidity of the humid air in the saturator is enhanced along with the height of the saturator. The water droplets entrainment is mainly decided by the diameter of the water droplets and the velocity of the humid air. There is a small temperature difference between the humid air and the water droplets in most areas of the saturator. The experiments show the humid air is mainly humidified at the lower part of the saturator and is simultaneously humidified and heated at the upper part.
Experimental study of the mechanism governing the HAT (humid air turbine) cycle performance of a split-shaft micro gas turbine

Abstract:Based on a split shaft micro gas turbine and through a saturator additionally installed, constituted was the HAT cycle performance test rig of the turbine. On this basis, tests of the mechanism governing the HAT cycle performance were carried out. The test results show that after the air is humidified, it has a conspicuous influence on the cycle performance and both specific power and efficiency of the cycle have a very big enhancement when compared with that of the simple cycle. When the humidification quantity reaches its maximum of 4.2%, the output power of the cycle will increase by 16%. The simulation results under the test conditions are in very good agreement with the test ones. On this basis, a simulation calculation was performed of the test system with a recuperator. The calculation results show that under the condition that the initial gas temperature is kept unchanged, the incorporation of the recuperator will result in an increase of the pressure loss of the system and the specific power of the device will decrease by about 3%-10%, however, in the meantime, the oil consumption rate will lower by 20%-45% and the efficiency will go up by 30%-80%. In such a case, the performance of the system is markedly enhanced.

Abstract:Saturator is one of the core components of humid air turbine (HAT) and is the main feature of HAT making it different from other gas turbine cycles. Due to the lack of sufficient experience in commercial plant operation, HAT cycle has a great demand for modeling and simulation of the system and its components, especially the saturator, to provide reference for system design and optimization. The conventional saturator models are usually based on the theory of heat and mass transfer, which need two accurate coefficients to ensure convincing results. This work proposes a global heat and mass transfer coefficient based on cooling tower technology to model the saturator in small-scale HAT cycle. Compared with the experimental data, the simulation results show that the proposed model well predicts the dynamic humidity and temperature distribution characteristics of saturator at low air pressure and temperature.
