Abstract:The performance of solar collector highly relies on its tilt angle with respect to horizontal plane and orientation (surface azimuth angle) of the collector. The effective heat collection concept was proposed and an optimized mathematical model was further developed to determine the optimum tilt angle and orientation for the solar collector. The developed model was applied in a case study of the Lhasa district, in comparison with the results obtained in accordance with conventional optimization results. The research results showed that, there is about 5 deviation between the optimum results obtained according to effective heat collecting capacity and the optimum results obtained according to maximum total solar radiation falling on the solar collector.
Modeling and Performance Optimization of the U-pipe Glass Evacuated Tube Solar Collector

Abstract:In this study, the heat transfer process of U-pipe glass evacuated tube collector is analysed by one-dimensional method, where a detailed fin model is developed with the effect of temperature difference between two legs of U-pipe taken into account. The thermal model is further verified with experimental data from literature, and the computational result matches good with the measurement data. Further, an optimization method is proposed to reduce the thermal resistance caused by air gap between the absorber tube and the aluminium fin. By adding a high emissivity coating on the fin surface, the thermal resistance of air gap per collector length is reduced to 0.18 (mK)/W and thermal performance of collector can be 2.6% higher after optimization. Study finds that the thermal efficiency improvement through this method increases with increase of collector working temperature and solar radiation intensity, which indicates that this method has high optimization potential in intermediate and high temperature application.
Coupling 2D Thermal and 3D Optical Model for Performance Prediction of a Parabolic Trough Solar Collector

Abstract:A 2D thermal model for tube receiver in parabolic trough solar collector is proposed, and a fast numerical algorithm is developed. Comparing to the previous models, we consider the radiation loss from the side plate of the tube receiver and direct transmission of the absorber radiation to the air to construct a physical model and mathematical equations. We also reduce the calculation by simplifying them to algebraic equations for numerical solution without needing iteration after ignoring the axial heat transfer. It is further coupled to the three-dimensional optical model to predict the performance of parabolic trough solar collector. The performances of the overall model and thermal model are tested against experimental measurements from Sandia National Laboratories. In all cases, the simulation results show a good agreement with the experimental results. The models developed in this paper can predict performance of parabolic trough solar collector with parabolic trough reflector and tube receiver accurately and quickly based on the structure and material properties of the system. Application of Entransy Theory in the Heat Transfer Optimization of Flat-Plate Solar Collectors

Abstract:The flat-plate solar collector is an important component in solar-thermal systems, and its heat transfer optimization is of great significance in terms of the efficiency of energy utilization. However, most existing flat-plate collectors adopt metallic absorber plates with uniform thickness, which often works against energy conservation. In this paper, to achieve the optimal heat transfer performance, we optimized the thickness distribution of the absorber with the constraint of fixed total material volume employing entransy theory. We first established the correspondence between the collector efficiency and the loss of entransy, and then proposed the constrained extreme-value problem and deduced the optimization criterion, namely a uniform temperature gradient, employing a variational method. Finally, on the basis of the optimization criterion, we carried out numerical simulations, with the results showing remarkable optimization effects. When irradiation, the ambient temperature and the wind speed are 800 W/m2, 300 K and 3 m/s, respectively, the collector efficiency is enhanced by 8.8% through optimization, which is equivalent to a copper saving of 30%. We also applied the thickness distribution optimized for wind speed of 3 m/s in heat transfer analysis with different wind speed conditions, and the collector efficiency was remarkably better than that for an absorber with uniform thickness.

Abstract:It is challenging to reduce the massive radiation heat loss from the parabolic trough solar receiver and enhance the solar utilization efficiency of the parabolic trough collector (PTC) system. On the basis of the negative thermal-flux phenomenon discovered in the PTC system, a novel PTC system integrated with photovoltaic (PTC-PV) panels is proposed in this study to effectively enhance the thermal performance and solar utilization effi-ciency of the PTC system. Four modes of the hybrid PTC-PV system are put forward for catching the optimum configuration. The mathematical models of the hybrid PTC-PV system in terms of photothermal and photo-electrical conversions are established. Additionally, a test rig of the hybrid system is built, and the experiments are carried out in an indoor laboratory with a solar simulator. Comparisons between the experimental and simulated results show that the model has an excellent prediction ability. Furthermore, a 12 m-length PTC-PV system using molten salt as heat transfer fluid is studied to validate its thermal, exergy, and overall perfor-mance. The results show that the hybrid PTC-PV system exhibits dramatic superiority in overall performance over the PTC prototype system. The heat loss of the solar receiver in the hybrid PTC-PV system is significantly reduced by 44.0 %, and the photoelectrical efficiency of the PV panel in the PTC-PV system is drastically enhanced by 118.3 % compared to that installed on the ground. Moreover, the overall and exergy efficiencies of the PTC-PV system can be improved by 14.3 and 13.7 %, respectively, at the inlet fluid temperature of 580 degrees C.

Abstract:A new analytical model for optical performance and a modified integration algorithm are proposed and applied to simulate the performance of a parabolic trough solar collector with vacuum tube receiver. The analytical equation for optical efficiency of each point at reflector is derived first, then the optical efficiency of the system is simulated by numerical integration algorithm. The cosine factor, receiver efficiency, heat loss and efficiency of conversion of solar energy into net heat energy at any time can be calculated with the program. The annual average efficiency is also simulated considering discard loss. The effects of optical error, tracking error, position error from installation of receiver, optical properties of reflector, transmittance and absorptivity of vacuum tube receiver on efficiencies of the trough system are simulated and analyzed as well as optical parameter. Abstract:Parabolic trough collector is an up-and-coming technology for urban energy supply. To further enhance the optical-thermal efficiency of the collector, a modified receiver enhanced by solar and hot mirrors was proposed. In this receiver, two symmetrical solar mirrors were designed to collect more solar irradiance, and a transparent hot-mirror shield was employed to lessen the thermal loss. After the design, the collector performance was studied by developing an optical-thermal coupled model. Based on the model, firstly, the proposed receiver was compared with the conventional receiver and two existing modified receivers. Results indicate the proposed receiver can achieve an optical efficiency of 78.02%, which is higher than those of the existing modified receivers and is just 0.22% lower than that of the conventional one. Moreover, compared with the conventional receiver, the two existing modified receivers cannot improve the optical-thermal efficiency at sufficiently high direct normal irradiance or relatively low fluid temperature, which can be overcome by the proposed receiver. Furthermore, compared with the conventional receiver, the proposed receiver can lessen the thermal loss by 11.2–89.6 W·m−1, thus improving the receiver efficiency and the optical-thermal efficiency by 0.03–5.26% and 0.03–4.70%, respectively, under the typical ranges of the inlet temperature (573–823 K) and the direct normal irradiance (0.3–1 kW·m−2). Then, parameter analysis indicates the hot mirror with low emissivity is necessary for efficiently improving the optical-thermal efficiency. Finally, the proposed receiver can improve the optical-thermal efficiency more effectively at higher fluid temperature or larger coating emissivity. The above results signify that the proposed receiver can be helpful for enhancing the efficiency of the trough collector.

Abstract:In this study, two dimensional parabolic collectors with tubular absorber are systematically analyzed. For more effective practical design, modifications are made in the profile of the collector, for example, truncating the reflector to a lower height, making a gap between the absorber and the reflector, maintaining a vacuum space inside the collector, and so on. By using ray tracing method, a numerical model is developed to study the performance of the modified collector. In the analysis, Beijing city is taken as one basic case; the collector orientation effect is discussed in a quantitative way. It is found that east-west orientation is best for the current collector. Seasonal collector performances are carefully simulated for different latitude conditions in this study. The results indicate that it is better to regulate the collector once in a season. The optimal collector slope angles for different periods are also identified in this study. Abstract:This study aims to optimize the economic thermodynamics of a flat plate solar collector and investigate transient heat transfer. This study focuses on modeling and optimization under unfavorable radiation conditions. The method employed here is optimization using a multi-objective genetic algorithm with the assistance of MATLAB software. The key components include objective functions, constraints, and design variables, which are the collector efficiency and the annual total price. The results indicate that increasing the length of the collector has a negative impact on the thermodynamic efficiency and increases the total annual price. Conversely, increasing the width of the collector initially improves the thermodynamic efficiency but then decreases it while also increasing the total annual price. Furthermore, increasing the number of pipes leads to a decrease in the total annual price and an initial increase followed by a decrease in the thermodynamic efficiency. The research was conducted over four different days.

Abstract:As one of the inexhaustible energy sources, solar energy as a means to provide space heating has been a public interest for decades. Many stand-alone solar thermal technologies have come into practice to replace the out-of-date systems. However, conventional solar thermal systems present two drawbacks: (1) unsteady solar sources can lead to insufficient heating in the winter, and (2) the solar collectors can become overheated in the summer. Therefore, this study proposes a conceptual design of an integrated solar harvesting unit that consists of the horizontal all-glass evacuated tube solar collectors and bottom mirror reflectors to overcome the above drawbacks to the largest extent possible. To accomplish this, a generic mathematical model of this design unit was developed, followed by the model validation process and optimal design analysis. For cities in the severe cold and cold climate zones of northern China, the bottom mirror reflectors can be regarded as solar energy collection boosters during the heating season, which can contribute solar energy ranging from 40% to 80% of the total collected solar energy depending on the inclined angles of the solar collectors and reflectors. In the summer, using such integrated unit with the solar collectors tilted at an obtuse angle, the absorbed solar radiation can be reduced by 20%, which is beneficial to overheating prevention.

Abstract:High-temperature solar receivers are core components in concentrated solar energy utilization systems. The rational design of solar receivers relies on the fundamental understanding of coupled physics across various scales. We developed a numerical model to assess the solar thermal conversion behaviour under various porous structure designs, material choices, geometrical designs, as well as operational conditions. The 3D model solves a coupled set of equations accounting for mass, momentum, and energy conservations in the cavity and porous media domains. We have optimized the radiative transfer model to resolve the participating behaviour only in the porous domain and non-participating behaviour only for cavity and window surfaces. This cost-effective model enables fast performance evaluation for various design parameters. The windowless receiver, in general, shows higher solar-to-thermal efficiency compared to the window receiver. This superiority in optical efficiency for the windowless case can be surpassed by the window case at high incident solar power with a fixed outlet temperature. For porous media structure, both window and windowless receivers are optimized by the porosity and pore diameter. The solar-to-thermal efficiency was slightly influenced by the cavity inclination. Large porous layer thickness leads to reduced performance for the windowless receivers, while the efficiency reaches a plateau for the window receiver at large thickness. We have provided a comprehensive modeling framework for the design of solar receivers for high-temperature applications using concentrated solar energy which can be easily adapted for receiver under a wide range of designs and operation conditions.

Design, Simulation and Optimization of a Novel Transpired Tubular Solar Air Heater

Abstract:In this paper, a novel tubular solar air heater is introduced. In this air heater, the hot boundary layer is drawn into the absorber tube and can provide thermal energy at moderate temperatures. Several different cases were simulated and a correlation was proposed to predict the collector's effectiveness as a function Rayleigh number and Reynolds number. An equation was derived to find the effectiveness of this collector. Finally, a real case was studied with non-uniform solar flux distribution, as well as radiation heat loss. Good agreement was found between the results and those derived by the proposed analytical method. For different suction values, the first-law and the second-law efficiencies were calculated. Based on the exergy analysis, exergy destruction in absorption is the dominant factor that is unavoidable in low-temperature collectors. It was shown that there is an optimum suction value at which the second-law efficiency is maximized. At the optimum point, temperature rise can reach 54 K, which is hardly possible with a flat plate collector. Based on the exergy analysis, the relation between tube wall temperature and air outlet temperature in their dimensionless forms at the optimum working condition was derived, and it was shown that effectiveness at the optimum working condition is around 0.5. This means that the air temperature rise shall be half of the temperature difference between collector wall and the ambient temperatures. A high outlet temperature besides the low cost of construction and maintenance are the main advantages of this air heater. With such a high temperature rise, this type of collector can increase the use of solar energy in domestic applications.

Abstract:The influences of some parameters on the performance of parabolic trough solar receiver are investigated in the present work. When the mass flow rate of working fluid, ambient temperature and solar incident angle increase, the heat losses of solar receiver decrease. The exergy losses of solar receiver increase as the inlet temperature of working fluid, wind velocity, and the inner diameter of glass cover increase. The convective heat loss of glass cover predominates in the heat losses of solar receiver based on thermal efficiency, but the exergy lost from absorber ends takes the largest proportion. The optical heat loss of solar collector is far more than the heat losses of solar receiver, especially in the larger solar incident angle. There exists an optimal mass flow rate of working fluid for exergy efficiency, and the thermal efficiency and exergy efficiency have opposite changing tendencies under some conditions. Therefore, the selection of evaluation criteria is crucial to the performance optimization of solar collector system. Energetic and Exergetic Analyses on Structural Optimized Parabolic Trough Solar Receivers in a Concentrated Solar–thermal Collector System

Abstract:High collecting temperature in parabolic trough collectors (PTCs) induces considerable radiative heat loss of solar receivers, which causes significant negative effects on heat-collecting efficiency. Structural optimized solar receivers with inner radiation shield achieved superior thermal performance for reducing heat loss. Based on widely commercial EuroTrough and PTR70 solar receivers, the optimized solar receivers are numerically applied to a small thermal-collection field with 72 m loop using molten salt as heat transfer fluid to validate their enhanced overall performance. Mathematical models relying on spectrum parameter calculation and working fluid volume unit method are established to simulate the energetic and exergetic performances of the solar receivers. The influence of solar irradiance on parabolic trough collector system is studied, and all-day system efficiencies in different areas in China are investigated to validate the performance of the proposed solar receivers in real condition. Results show that the PTCs with novel solar receivers exhibit outstanding energetic and exergetic performances compared with conventional receivers. The heat loss reduction percentage of the novel receivers reaches approximately 24.0% when the absorber temperature is 600 degrees C. The heat-collecting efficiency and exergetic efficiency are effectively raised by 7.1% and 4.7%, respectively, at an inlet temperature of 580 degrees C. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In order to reduce the convection loss between the solar collector tube and the environment,a vacuum collector is usually used in trough solar collector.A new cavity(black cavity)collector has been designed with its high quality and low price adapting medium temperature(100~250℃)applications.A three-dimensional model of solar trough collector has been built.The focal length of the condenser has been discussed,the relationship between light concentrator tracking error angle and the cavity opening width has been analyzed,the cavity has also been optimized.The working situation of collector tube has been simulated by software TracePro.The results show that nearly 80%of the light can be reflected to collector tube in cavity,and the possibility in practical work has been proved.

Abstract:PV/T collector turns out to be a promising alternative for the traditional solar thermal collector for domestic hot water (DHW) application. In this paper, four comprehensive thermal and electrical models including unglazed PV/T, glazed PV/T, PV and flat plate thermal collector are established for the purpose of accurate long-term simulation and optimization. The detailed 2-D temperature distributions of the glazed, and unglazed PV/T collector are illustrated and compared for the first time. Besides, the dynamic response characteristics of different collectors are discussed and compared. By running the models under a broad combination of the operating conditions, the comprehensive performances are obtained and found to be significantly influenced by flow rate, temperatures, radiation and wind speed. A multi objective optimization model coupling TRNSYS and NSGA-II tool is established to study and optimize the PV/T DHW system for a complete year. The Pareto frontier of conflicting objectives (life cycle savings and prime energy saving efficiency) is obtained for the optimal system design. The mass flow rate on the Pareto frontier is between 0.0085 kg/s and 0.011 kg/s in this study. The optimal value of tank volume on Pareto frontier shows an equally scattering distribution between 99.5 L and 218.6Lfor a 2 m(2) glazed PV/T collector. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Prospects for parabolic trough collector are growing as the market increasingly values concentrated solar-thermal utilization. Parabolic trough solar receivers, the key components of parabolic trough collector system, seriously suffer degradation of photothermal conversion performance at high operating temperature due to considerable emissive heat loss, which exerts significantly negative influence on the overall performance and development of parabolic trough collector and subsequent thermal utilization systems. This study examines the spectral emissive heat loss and circumferential heat transfer characteristics around the parabolic trough solar receiver. In this framework, a new concept is proposed, i.e. the negative thermal-flux region in which negative net heat gain occurs, accordingly enlightening and giving birth to new optimization strategies for reducing emissive heat loss of the parabolic trough receiver. A novel parabolic trough receiver with an inner radiation shield in the negative thermal-flux region is designed, manufactured and comprehensively tested. The results show a validity of the existence of the negative thermal-flux region and great potential of new optimization methods to achieve breakthrough enhancement of heat-collecting performance in parabolic trough collector system. Compared with the prototype solar receiver, the heat loss of proposed solar receiver is effectively reduced by 28.1% at absorber temperature of 600 degrees C, the heat-collecting and exergetic efficiencies are significantly enhanced by 12.9 and 17.6% at the solar irradiance of 600 W/m(2) and inlet temperature of 550 degrees C. Abstract:Structural optimum design of the collector was presented in this paper by using finite element software ABAQUS incorporated with genetic optimal algorithms. In the optimization of trusses, cross-sectional areas of members were considered as variables and the maximum node displacement was used as the constraint in genetic algorithms. The bending and torsion failure models concerning on the optical accuracy were established for the trough collector. The conversion from the wind load into the dead load was acted on the collector. The stress and displacement for the collector were obtained under 6th level gale, 8th level gale and 10th level gale, respectively with a range of pitching angles of 30°, 45° and 90°. The maximum stress and node displacement were obtained under 10th level gale with a pitch angle of 90°. The maximum node displacement occurred near the brim of the parabolic mirror facets. The largest displacement in absorber occurred in the middle. Detailed FEM investigations on the structural behavior were performed to obtain the best possible relationship between optical accuracy and collector cost under various load cases, such as dead load, wind loads for a range of pitching angles of the collector and wind directions, for alternate designs, complex computer modeling and ray tracing.
