Abstract:The non-linear instability characteristics of fiber suspensions in a plane Poiseuille flow are investigated. The evolution equation of the perturbation amplitude analogous to Landau equation is formulated and solved numerically for different fiber parameters. It is found that the equilibrium amplitude decreases with the increase of the fiber aspect ratio and volume fraction, i.e. the addition of the fibers reduces the amplitude of the perturbation, and leads to the reduction of the flow instability. This phenomenon becomes significant for large volume concentration and aspect ratio. The mechanism of the reduction of the flow instability is also analyzed by taking into account of the modification of the mean flow and the energy transfer from the mean flow to the perturbation flow.

Abstract:The nonlinear stability of plane parallel shear flows with respect to tilted perturbations is studied by energy methods. Tilted perturbation refers to the fact that perturbations form an angle with the direction of the basic flows. By defining an energy functional, it is proven that plane parallel shear flows are unconditionally nonlinearly exponentially stable for tilted streamwise perturbation when the Reynolds number is below a certain critical value and the boundary conditions are either rigid or stress-free. In the case of stress-free boundaries, by taking advantage of the poloidal-toroidal decomposition of a solenoidal field to define energy functionals, it can be even shown that plane parallel shear flows are unconditionally nonlinearly exponentially stable for all Reynolds numbers, where the tilted perturbation can be either spanwise or streamwise.

Abstract:Nonlinear amplitude saturation (NAS) of the fundamental mode of Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) in a finite-thickness incompressible fluid layer is investigated analytically by considering high-order corrections (HOCs) up to the ninth order. The results of classical RTI [Liu et al., Phys. Plasmas 19, 042705 (2012)] can be recovered for the normalized fluid thickness kd -> infinity. It is found that the NAS of the fundamental mode on the lower and upper interfaces is clearly larger than its third-order counterpart [Wang et al., Phys. Plasmas 21, 122710 (2014)] when the HOCs are considered, especially for the lower (linearly unstable) interface. Furthermore, the NAS on both interfaces exhibits the trend of convergence with increasing order of corrections. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:The finite-amplitude instability of the natural convection in a vertical porous slab filled with variable permeability porous medium is investigated analytically. The side walls of the slab are kept at different temperatures, and the permeability in the horizontal direction is assumed to be exponential heterogeneous models. Two-dimensional, finite-amplitude solutions for the thermal buoyant flow are obtained for Darcy–Rayleigh numbers close to the critical values by using the amplitude expansion method. The dependence of the fundamental mode, the distortion of the mean flow, and the second harmonic upon the variable permeability constant are discussed. By calculating the first Landau coefficient, the primary bifurcations in the vicinity of the neutral stability curves are identified. The results show that only supercritical bifurcations are found to occur, rather than subcritical instabilities. In terms of the well-known Landau equation, the threshold amplitude of the nonlinear equilibrium solution is analyzed as well.

Abstract:A linear hydrodynamic instability of nanofluids in a channel flow is investigated. The instability equations of nanofluids are derived and solved numerically. The validity of the numerical formulations and schemes is tested by comparing the present results with the available experimental data and theoretical results. The results show that the existence of particles suppresses the flow instability, but cannot completely eliminate it. As particle mass loading is increased, the region of unstable wavenumbers is reduced from that of the pure Newtonian flow and the largest growth rate that governs the flow instability is reduced. The Stokes number has an effect on the instability behavior of the nanofluids. As the Stokes number and Knudsen number decrease, the critical Reynolds numbers increase and the unstable regions of small perturbations decrease, along with a decrease in the largest growth rates that govern the flow instability, therefore reinforcing the flow stability. Larger particles reduce the peak value of the velocity disturbance and hence attenuate the flow instability.

Abstract:Numerical analysis has been carried out for the supercritical flow instability in parallel dual channel by the time-domain approach. The mass. momentum and energy conservation equations are discredited using an implicit finite difference scheme. A computer code called SCIA is developed to calculate the flow characteristics in the parallel dual channel. Curves of pressure drop versus flow rate are obtained. Para-metric studies are carried out for the supercritical water in the parallel dual channel. Results show that for supercritical conditions, the static instability can hardly occur, and the parametric effects on flow instability are similar to those in two-phase flows.
Long-wave instability in shear flow

Abstract:We prove here that the short waves in shear flows are always stable, whereas the shear flow instability is due to long wave instability. For the unstable flows, an estimation of growth rate is obtained as $\omega_i \leq (p-1)\sqrt{\mu_1} |U_{\max}-U_{\min}|$, which is much better than former one obtained by H{\o}iland and Howard. It implies that the shear flow itself can damp the short waves without viscous effect. Contrast this with short wave instability in Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability. Further investigation shows that K-H instability is in essence of long-wave instability in shear flow. These results can be applied to verify numerical calculations.

Abstract:Based on the homogeneous flow model , the system control equations of parallel channels were established .Semi-implicit finite-difference method with staggered mesh was used to discretize the system control equations solved with a chasing method to simulate the two-phase flow behavior of parallel channels .The cosine heat flux was selected to simulate the axial non-uniform heating . The marginal stability boundary (MSB ) and three-dimensional instability space under different system pressures , different inlet subcoolings and different axial heating modes were obtained by using small perturbation method . The stability of parallel channels increases with system pressures for both cosine and uniform heat flux .At high inlet subcooling region ,the cosine heat flux can strengthen the system stability .However ,at low inlet subcooling region ,the negative effect on the system stability will be caused by cosine heat flux .For the cosine heat flux ,the increase of inlet resistant coefficient will move the turning point of the MSB to high inlet subcooling number and enhance the system stability .

Abstract:In this study, a numerical code that applies a time-domain method is established to analyze the flow instability of a uniformly heated parallel-channel system. Nonlinear dynamics of the ultra-supercritical flow in the water wall are discussed. Results show that the inlet and outlet mass flow rates demonstrate antiphase. The mass flow rates with heat flux perturbations imposed on either single channel decline gradually with time, suggesting that flow stability can be maintained at normal operation. In addition, the effects of heat flux perturbation on transient responses of the typical parallel channels are studied. Results illustrate that the maximum of the inlet mass flow rate in both channels are high when perturbation is imposed on a strong heated channel. Moreover, flow in the stronger heated channel reveals more remarkable dynamic characteristics than in the weaker one. Approximately 141.6 and 139.8 s are needed for perturbation.1 and perturbation.2 to restore to steady state, respectively. Furthermore, data under different inlet temperatures and mass flow rates are calculated to generate the dimensionless instability boundary. When the inlet temperature is low, the inlet mass flow rate should be increased to stabilize the system. Otherwise, the effect of the mass flow rate on the instability boundary is almost negligible.

Abstract:We consider barotropic instability of shear flows for incompressible fluids with Coriolis effects. For a class of shear flows, we develop a new method to find the sharp stability conditions. We study the flow with Sinus profile in details and obtain the sharp stability boundary in the whole parameter space, which corrects previous results in the fluid literature. Our new results are confirmed by more accurate numerical computation. The addition of the Coriolis force is found to bring fundamental changes to the stability of shear flows. Moreover, we study dynamical behaviors near the shear flows, including the bifurcation of nontrivial traveling wave solutions and the linear inviscid damping. The first ingredient of our proof is a careful classification of the neutral modes. The second one is to write the linearized fluid equation in a Hamiltonian form and then use an instability index theory for general Hamiltonian PDEs. The last one is to study the singular and non-resonant neutral modes using Sturm-Liouville theory and hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:The nonlinear waves in a sheared liquid film on a horizontal plate at small Reynolds numbers are examined by theoretical and numerical approaches. The analysis employs the long-wave approximation along with finite difference schemes. The results show that the surface tension can suppress disturbances and prevent the occurrence of singularities. While the film flow is driven by the shear stress on the interface, its instability highly depends on the magnitude and direction of gravity. Specifically, when the direction of gravity is opposite to the wall-normal direction, perturbations are stabilized by gravity. In contrast, when these two directions are the same, the gravitational force is destabilizing, and stationary travelling waves can exist if a balance is reached between the effects of gravity and surface tension. For the steady solitary waves, there are quasi-periodic oscillations occurring between two stationary points, indicating the presence of heteroclinic trajectories. For periodic waves, the evolutions are sensitive to several parameters and initial disturbances, while one steady-state wave exhibits a sine function-like behaviour.

Abstract:Electrothermohydrodynamic convection driven by strong unipolar charge injection in the presence of a stabilizing inverse thermal gradient between two parallel electrodes is investigated by a linear stability analysis and a numerical simulation. The generalized Schur decomposition is used to solve for the eigenvalues of the linearized system revealing the critical parameters. The two relaxation time lattice Boltzmann method coupled to a fast Poisson solver is used to resolve the nonlinear system for the spatiotemporal distribution of flow field, electric field, charge density, and temperature. With strong charge injection and high electric Rayleigh number, the system exhibits electrothermoconvective vortices. The interactions between the stabilizing buoyancy force and the destabilizing electric force lead to overstability, where the flow constantly oscillates when instability evolves. A two-stage bifurcation is observed for overstability near the threshold Rayleigh number with a significant change in phase and amplitude. The effects of ion mobility and thermal diffusivity are characterized by the ratio of the counteracting forces.

Abstract:To comprehensively understand saturation of two-dimensional ($2$D) magnetized Kelvin-Helmholtz-instability-driven turbulence, energy transfer analysis is extended from the traditional interaction between scales to include eigenmode interactions, by using the nonlinear couplings of linear eigenmodes of the ideal instability. While both kinetic and magnetic energies cascade to small scales, a significant fraction of turbulent energy deposited by unstable modes in the fluctuation spectrum is shown to be re-routed to the conjugate-stable modes at the instability scale. They remove energy from the forward cascade at its inception. The remaining cascading energy flux is shown to attenuate exponentially at a small scale, dictated by the large-scale stable modes. Guided by a widely used instability-saturation assumption, a general quasilinear model of instability is tested by retaining all nonlinear interactions except those that couple to the large-scale stable modes. These complex interactions are analytically removed from the magnetohydrodynamic equations using a novel technique. Observations are: an explosive large-scale vortex separation instead of the well-known merger of $2$D, a dramatic enhancement in turbulence level and spectral energy fluxes, and a reduced small-scale dissipation length-scale. These show critical role of the stable modes in instability saturation. Possible reduced-order turbulence models are proposed for fusion and astrophysical plasmas, based on eigenmode-expanded energy transfer analyses.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the nonlinear instability of the shear flow in three dimensional inviscid non-conducting Boussinesq equations with rotation. We establish the nonlinear instability of the shear motion with respect to a general class of perturbation, by means of constructing an approximate solution containing the shear flow and an exponentially growing profile, which is deduced from the geostrophic limit model.

Abstract:With a view to better utilizing and further expanding the experimental results recently obtained on supercritical flow instability, an in-house code has been developed applying time-domain approach. Different ways of geometrical modeling of the test section in the experiments are studied. Comparison between the numerical and experimental results shows that the numerical code is capable to predict well the stability boundaries. Based on the validated code, the geometrical simplification is further discussed and a relatively simple as well as common geometrical configuration is proposed. Discussions also indicate that the entrance and riser sections cannot be eliminated with respect to numerical modeling of flow stability. Effects of inlet temperature and total mass flow rate are numerically analyzed. Results show that the inlet temperature has a non-monotonic effect on the threshold power, while the threshold power is roughly proportional to the total mass flow rate no matter the system is symmetrical or not. Moreover, the results indicate that it would be more difficult to perform flow instability experiments at higher inlet temperature or total mass flow rate. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Purely elastic linear instabilities in parallel shear flows with free-slip boundary conditions

Abstract:We perform a linear stability analysis of viscoelastic plane Couette and plane Poiseuille flows with free-slip boundary conditions. The fluid is described by the Oldroyd-B constitutive model, and the flows are driven by a suitable body force. We find that both types of flow become linearly unstable, and we characterise the spatial structure of the unstable modes. By performing a boundary condition homotopy from the free-slip to no-slip boundaries, we demonstrate that the unstable modes are directly related to the least stable modes of the no-slip problem, destabilised under the free-slip situation. We discuss how our observations can be used to study recently discovered purely elastic turbulence in parallel shear flows.

Abstract:Mechanism of the nonlinear saturation of compressible electromagnetic mirror instability is studied using the gyrokinetic particle simulation. Phase‐space particle trapping due to the mirror force is found to be the dominant saturation mechanism in the simulation of a single mirror mode with relatively weak drive. At the nonlinear saturation, the phase‐space island of the distribution function is formed. The oscillation frequency of the saturated perturbation amplitude is close to the bounce frequency of the trapped particles, which is comparable to the linear growth rate of the mirror mode. Scaling of the saturation amplitude is consistent with the onset of the particle trapping. With strong instability drive, relaxation toward marginal stability dominates the nonlinear saturation of the mirror instability. Phase‐space trapping, however, persists after the saturation and continues to regulate the nonlinear evolution of the mirror mode.

Abstract:The mechanism of free surface instability of non-Newtonian laminar flows is studied theoretically and experimentally in the paper. Development of surface waves and roll waves of non-Newtonian flow has been reported in many cases, such as the river clogging in the hyperconcentrated flows, intermittent viscous debris flows and fluctuation in mudflows. Theoretical analysis from the equation of motion incorporating the non-Newtonian nature of the fluid demonstrated that the free surface instability is essentially caused by the yield stress. Two dimensionless numbers, S-y and S-vis, representing the effects of yield stress and viscosity are calculated and compared for various flows. It is concluded that the free surface is unstable and roll waves may develop even at constant incoming flow rate if S-y is much larger than S-vis and is stable if S-y is smaller than S-vis. Experiments were conducted to study the phenomena of river clogging, development of a perturbation wave in non-Newtonian laminar flow, and development of roll waves. The results agree well with the theoretical formula showing exponential law of growth of wave height. The growth rate of wave height depends essentially on the parameter S-y. if S-y is large enough a series of roll waves develop from stable flow and the larger is the parameter, the higher the waves.

Abstract:Due to the urgent need for experimental study on supercritical water flow instability, the parallel-channel asymmetry which determines the feasibility of such experiments was studied with the experimental and numerical results in parallel dual channel. The evolution of flow rates in the experiments was analyzed, and the steady-state characteristics as well as transient characteristics of the system were obtained by self-developed numerical code. The results show that the asymmetry of the parallel dual channel would reduce the feasibility of experiments. The asymmetry of flow rates is aroused by geometrical asymmetry. Due to the property variation characteristics of supercritical water, the flow rate asymmetry is enlarged while rising beyond the pseudo-critical point. The extent of flow rate asymmetry is affected by the bulk temperature and total flow rate; therefore the experimental feasibility can be enhanced by reducing the total flow rate.
