Abstract:Discontinuous Shear Thickening (DST) fluids exhibit unique instability properties in a wide range of flow conditions. We present numerical simulations of a scalar model for DST fluids in a planar simple shear using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) approach. The model reproduces the spatially homogeneous instability mechanism based on the competition between the inertial and microstructural timescales, with good congruence to the theoretical predictions. Spatial inhomogeneities arising from a stress-splitting instability are rationalised within the context of local components of the microstructure evolution. Using this effect, the addition of non-locality in the model is found to produce an alternative mechanism of temporal instabilities, driven by the inhomogeneous pattern formation. The reported arrangement of the microstructure is generally in agreement with the experimental data on gradient pattern formation in DST. Simulations in a parameter space representative of realistic DST materials resulted in aperiodic oscillations in measured shear rate and stress, driven by formation of gap-spanning frictional structures.

Abstract:Single droplet deformation in pulsatile shear flow is numerically studied by using meso-scopic dissipative particle dynamics method. Numerical model and simulation method are fully validated with three typical cases in which transient flow behaviors are well captured. Cases in quasi-Stokes regime are first investigated with flow Reynolds number to be less than O(10−2). In early stage, droplet deforms gradually in the manner of periodic oscillation but irreversible. Later, droplet deformation gets into a stable state of oscillation and becomes reversible. The mean deformation parameter in stable state is frequency independent and its relationship to mean Capillary number is close to the trend in steady shear. Cases with finite inertia are studied with flow Reynolds number to be approximately to 1. In contrast, the inertial effects make the mean deformation parameters have a strong frequency dependence. The shear and relax tests are conducted to explain above dynamic behavior of droplet deformation. It is found that the droplet deformations in shear and relax are antisymmetric in quasi-Stokes regime while in finite inertia regime droplet deforms slower in shear process than it is in relax process. The frequency dependent behavior of droplet in pulsatile shear might provide a reliable strategy in the control of droplet deformation.

Abstract:Due to the importance of gravitational forces, flows of astrophysical interest are often observed in a supersonic regime, which gives rise for their description to various analytical or numerical difficulties. Let us briefly mention as examples the supersonic turbulence observed in interstellar clouds, stellar or galactic jets and accretion disks where gravitational energy is thought to be converted into radiation. The interested reader may consult for instance an account of recent works concerning disk stability in Narayan & Goodman (1989) and the references therein. However, despite the central role played by such dynamical phenomena in the description of cosmic objects, the basic problems associated with matter inflow and angular momentum outflow remain still unsolved. The complexity of the problem urges on studying first the stability properties of supersonic flows in the simpler case of plane shearing and examining in a second step questions related to rotation and gravitation.
Effect of a shear flow on the Darrieus-Landau instability in a Hele-Shaw channel

Abstract:The Darrieus--Landau instability of premixed flames propagating in a narrow Hele-Shaw channel in the presence of a strong shear flow is investigated, incorporating also the Rayleigh--Taylor and diffusive-thermal instabilities. The flow induces shear-enhanced diffusion (Taylor dispersion) in the streamwise direction, but not in the spanwise direction and this leads to anisotropic diffusion and flame propagation. To understand how such anisotropies affect flame stability, two important cases are considered. These correspond to initial unperturbed conditions pertaining to a planar flame propagating in the streamwise or spanwise directions. The analysis is based on a two-dimensional model derived by asymptotic methods and solved numerically. These address the influence of the shear-flow strength (or Peclet number $Pe$), preferential diffusion (or Lewis number $Le$) and gravity (or Rayleigh number $Ra$). Dispersion curves characterizing the perturbation growth rate are computed for selected values of $Pe$, $Le$ and $Ra$. Taylor dispersion induced by strong shear flows is found to suppress the Darrieus--Landau instability and to weaken the flame wrinkling when the flame propagates in the streamwise direction. In contrast, when the flame propagates in the spanwise direction, the flame is stabilized in $Le<1$ mixtures, but destabilized in $Le>1$ mixtures. In the latter case, Taylor dispersion coupled with gas expansion facilitates flame wrinkling in an unusual manner. Specifically, stagnation points and counter-rotating vortices are encountered in the flame close to the unburnt gas side. More generally, an original finding is the demonstration that vorticity can be produced by a curved flame in a Hele-Shaw channel even in the absence of gravity, whenever $Pe \neq 0$, and that the vorticity remains confined to the flame preheat and reaction zones.

Abstract:The hydrodynamic instabilities of propagating interfaces in Hele-Shaw channels or porous media under the influence of an imposed flow and gravitational acceleration are investigated within the framework of Darcy's law. The stability analysis pertains to an interface between two fluids with different densities, viscosities, and permeabilities, which can be susceptible to Darrieus-Landau, Saffman-Taylor, and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. A theoretical analysis, treating the interface as a hydrodynamic discontinuity, yields a simple dispersion relation between the perturbation growth rate $s$ and its wavenumber $k$ in the form $s=(ak - bk^2)/(1+ck)$, where $a$, $b$ and $c$ are constants determined by problem parameters. The constant $a$ characterises all three hydrodynamic instabilities, which are long-wave in nature. In contrast, $b$ and $c$, which characterize the influences of local curvature and flow strain on interface propagation speed, typically provide stabilisation at short wavelengths comparable to interface's diffusive thickness. The theoretical findings for Darcy's law are compared with a generalisation of the classical work by Joulin & Sivashinsky, which is based on an Euler-Darcy model. The comparison provides a conceptual bridge between predictions based on Darcy's law and those on Euler's equation and offers valuable insights into the role of confinement on interface instabilities in Hele-Shaw channels. Numerical analyses of the instabilities are carried out for premixed flames using a simplified chemistry model and Darcy's law. The numerical results corroborate with the explicit formula with a reasonable accuracy. Time-dependent numerical simulations of unstable premixed flames are carried out to gain insights into the nonlinear development of these instabilities.

Abstract:We perform a linear stability analysis of extended domains in phase-separating fluids of equal viscosity, in two dimensions. Using the coupled Cahn-Hilliard and Stokes equations, we derive analytically the stability eigenvalues for long wavelength fluctuations. In the quiescent state we find an unstable varicose mode which corresponds to an instability towards coarsening. This mode is stabilized when an external shear flow is imposed on the fluid. The effect of the shear is seen to be qualitatively similar to that found in experiments.

Abstract:In this work, we prove a threshold theorem for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations posed on the periodic channel, $\mathbb{T} \times [-1,1]$, supplemented with Navier boundary conditions $\omega|_{y = \pm 1} = 0$. Initial datum is taken to be a perturbation of Couette in the following sense: the shear component of the perturbation is assumed small (in an appropriate Sobolev space) but importantly is independent of $\nu$. On the other hand, the nonzero modes are assumed size $O(\nu^{\frac12})$ in an anisotropic Sobolev space. For such datum, we prove nonlinear enhanced dissipation and inviscid damping for the resulting solution. The principal innovation is to capture quantitatively the \textit{inviscid damping}, for which we introduce a new Singular Integral Operator which is a physical space analogue of the usual Fourier multipliers which are used to prove damping. We then include this SIO in the context of a nonlinear hypocoercivity framework.

Abstract:Direct stability analysis based on the Floquet theory has been employed to clarify the effects of planar shear on three-dimensional instabilities in the wake of two identical circular cylinders of diameter D in tandem arrangement. The center-to-center separation (L-x) in the range of 1.2 <= L-x/D <= 2.5 was considered. The onset of the three-dimensional instabilities was calculated, and the critical Reynolds number and corresponding spanwise wavenumber varying with the separation were discussed for different shear rates. Representative configurations were chosen to illustrate different transition scenarios, with the three-dimensional instabilities studied in detail for each case. It was found that three different effects of planar shear on the three-dimensional synchronous instability originally present in the otherwise uniform flow were identified depending on the separation. A subharmonic mode referred to as mode SS was observed to develop in the wake due to the flow asymmetry caused by the planar shear. This subharmonic mode differs from the C-type mode in terms of both the spatial structure and critical spanwise wavelength. Furthermore, the mode SS instability was found to be intensified as the shear becomes stronger, and it develops more rapidly than the synchronous modes. Published under license by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:A numerical study on the flow structure and instability in the separated-reattached flow over a surface-mounted rib at Re = 1000 is performed using large eddy simulation. It is found that the phenomenon of vortex pairing, which has been extensively observed in similar flows, exists in the separation zone. Based on the spectral analysis, the Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability of shear layer at St approximate to 0.361 (St fh/U-0) and its subharmonic at St approximate to 0.18 are found. It is assumed that the K-H instability reduces to its subharmonic through the vortex pairing. This process is further confirmed by the flow visualisation. The two-dimensional (2D) structures are subjected to sinusoidal undulation along the spanwise and observed to undergo helical pairing process, which is attributed to the transformation of 2D structures into 3D. However, the low frequency due to flapping of the shear layer is not found.

Abstract:It is shown that the physical interpretation of Elie Cartan three-dimensional space torsion as couple asymmetric stress, has the effect of damping, previously Riemannian unstable Couette planar shear flow, leading to stability of the flow in the Lagrangean sense. Actually, since the flow speed is inversely proportional to torsion, it has the effect of causing a damping in the planar flow atenuating the instability effect. In this sense we may say that Cartan torsion induces shear viscous asymmetric stresses in the fluid, which are able to damp the instability of the flow. The stability of the flow is computed from the sectional curvature in non-Riemannian three-dimensional manifold. Marginal stability is asssumed by making the sectional non-Riemannian curvature zero, which allows us to determine the speeds of flows able to induce this stability. The ideas discussed here show that torsion plays the geometrical role of magnetic field in hydromagnetic instability of Couette flows recently investigated by Bonnano and Urpin (PRE, (2007,in press) can be extended and applied to plastic flows with microstructure defects. Recently Riemannian asymmetric stresses in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) have been considered by Billig (2004).

Abstract:We consider barotropic instability of shear flows for incompressible fluids with Coriolis effects. For a class of shear flows, we develop a new method to find the sharp stability conditions. We study the flow with Sinus profile in details and obtain the sharp stability boundary in the whole parameter space, which corrects previous results in the fluid literature. Our new results are confirmed by more accurate numerical computation. The addition of the Coriolis force is found to bring fundamental changes to the stability of shear flows. Moreover, we study dynamical behaviors near the shear flows, including the bifurcation of nontrivial traveling wave solutions and the linear inviscid damping. The first ingredient of our proof is a careful classification of the neutral modes. The second one is to write the linearized fluid equation in a Hamiltonian form and then use an instability index theory for general Hamiltonian PDEs. The last one is to study the singular and non-resonant neutral modes using Sturm-Liouville theory and hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:In this paper, the stability of two co-axial immiscible fluids flowing in an annular duct is investigated. The inner layer consists of a shear-thinning fluid, which is surrounded by a Newtonian liquid annulus in the outer layer. A constant pressure gradient is applied to drive the flow in the annular channel. Linear stability analysis is employed to investigate the shear-thinning effect on the Rayleigh-Plateau instability and the interface wave instability. Results show that the Rayleigh-Plateau mode can be enhanced and the topological structures of the marginal stability curve of the Rayleigh-Plateau mode can be significantly changed by the shear-thinning effect. When the shear-thinning effect is strong, a case study shows that the Rayleigh-Plateau instability can be slightly suppressed by the viscosity stratification in the inner layer. The shear-thinning effect has a dual influence on the interface wave instability. It can either enhance or suppress the interface wave instability, depending on the thickness ratio and viscosity ratio between the outer layer and the inner layer.

Abstract:In this work, we report numerical results on the flow instability and bifurcation of a viscoelastic fluid in the upstream region of a cylinder in a confined narrow channel. Two-dimensional direct numerical simulations based on the FENE-P model (the finite-extensible nonlinear elastic model with the Peterlin closure) are conducted with numerical stabilization techniques. Our results show that the macroscopic viscoelastic constitutive relation can capture the viscoelastic upstream instability reported in previous experiments for low-Reynolds-number flows. The numerical simulations reveal that the non-dimensional recirculation length (L D ) is affected by the cylinder blockage ratio (BR), the Weissenberg number (Wi), the viscosity ratio (β) and the maximum polymer extension (L). Close to the onset of upstream recirculation, L D with Wi satisfy Landau-type quartic potential under certain parameter space. The bifurcation may exhibit subcritical behaviour depending on the values of L 2 and β. The parameters β and L 2 have nonlinear influence on the upstream recirculation length. This work contributes to our theoretical understanding of this new instability mechanism in viscoelastic wake flows.

On the fractal dimension of non-Newtonian Hele-Shaw flow subject to Saffman-Taylor instability

Abstract:We introduce a discrete numerical method based on the diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) approach to simulate two-fluid Hele-Shaw flow subject to the Saffman-Taylor interfacial instability, in the case where the displaced fluid is non-Newtonian. Focusing on fluids for which the most relevant non-Newtonian aspect of the thin-gap flow is shear-thinning, we introduce a history-dependent aspect into the algorithm, modeling shear-rate-dependent fluid viscosity. The main finding is that the morphology of the emerging patterns, characterized by the fractal dimension, is modified in a nontrivial manner by the shear-thinning nature of the displaced fluid. In particular, we consistently find that shear-thinning leads to the formation of patterns characterized by a smaller fractal dimension, compared to the corresponding Newtonian fluid.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of the two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations linearized around a shear flow on a (non-square) torus which possesses exactly two non-degenerate critical points. We obtain linear inviscid damping and vorticity depletion estimates for the linearized flow that are uniform with respect to the viscosity, and enhanced dissipation type decay estimates. The main task is to understand the associated Rayleigh and Orr-Sommerfeld equations, under the natural assumption that the linearized operator around the shear flow in the inviscid case has no discrete eigenvalues. The key difficulty is to understand the behavior of the solution to Orr-Sommerfeld equations in three distinct regimes depending on the spectral parameter: the non-degenerate case when the spectral parameter is away from the critical values, the intermediate case when the spectral parameter is close to but still separated from the critical values, and the most singular case when the spectral parameter is inside the viscous layer.

Abstract:This paper presents numerical simulation results of the deformation and breakup of an isolated liquid drop suspended in an ambient, immiscible viscous fluid under shear flow. The model predicting the dynamic behavior of the drop is based on a diffuse interface method. The interface between the two fluids is tracked by an order parameter, namely the mass concentration. The fully transient, three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible fluid are solved by a projection method on a fixed Cartesian grid which the interface moves through to ensure accurate calculation of the surface evolution. Surface tension effects are incorporated into the model through a modified stress. This paper focuses on steady shape analysis and the end pinching mechanism of drop breakup. The numerical results of drop deformation and breakup show very good agreement with theoretical analysis and experimental observations, which indicate that the diffuse interface method can successfully capture the main behavior of the drop deformation and breakupDetailed instructions for typing your article are given in the following.
Stochastically driven instability in rotating shear flows

Abstract:The origin of hydrodynamic turbulence in rotating shear flows is investigated, with particular emphasis on the flows whose angular velocity decreases but whose specific angular momentum increases with the increasing radial coordinate. Such flows are Rayleigh stable, but must be turbulent in order to explain the observed data. Such a mismatch between the linear theory and the observations/experiments is more severe when any hydromagnetic/magnetohydrodynamic instability and then the corresponding turbulence therein is ruled out. This work explores the effect of stochastic noise on such hydrodynamic flows. We essentially concentrate on a small section of such a flow, which is nothing but a plane shear flow supplemented by the Coriolis effect. This also mimics a small section of an astrophysical accretion disc. It is found that such stochastically driven flows exhibit large temporal and spatial correlations of perturbation velocities and hence large energy dissipations of perturbation, which presumably generate the instability. A range of angular velocity (Ω) profiles of the background flow, starting from that of a constant specific angular momentum (λ = Ωr2; r being the radial coordinate) to a constant circular velocity (vϕ = Ωr), is explored. However, all the background angular velocities exhibit identical growth and roughness exponents of their perturbations, revealing a unique universality class for the stochastically forced hydrodynamics of rotating shear flows. This work, to the best of our knowledge, is the first attempt to understand the origin of instability and turbulence in three-dimensional Rayleigh stable rotating shear flows by introducing additive noise to the underlying linearized governing equations. This has important implications to resolve the turbulence problem in astrophysical hydrodynamic flows such as accretion discs.
