Abstract:In this paper, a novel method to measure the distributed polarization mode coupling in polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers is introduced. The measurement system is based on white light interference. A super luminescent diode is used as the broadband light source in the system. The whole test system is working on 1300nm wavelength. There are two main parts of the measurement equipment: polarization adjustment and a scanned Michelson interferometer. In order to improve the accuracy, a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) is-applied in the scanned Michelson interferometer. The maximum length of tested polarization-maintaining fiber is one kilometer, and the spatial resolution of this method reached 60 mm along the tested PM fiber. The degree of polarization mode coupling that could be detected is -75dB.
Absolute Distance Measurement with Spectral Domain White-Light Interferometer

Abstract:A fiber-optic spectrometer was employed for recording spectral interferograms over a wide wave-length range(450～900 nm).A new method was presented for retrieving the wrapped phase function by the envelope method.The unwrapped phase was obtained by a simple procedure based on linear depend-ence of optical path difference between interferometer beams on the refractive index of optical elements.The effective thickness of the beam splitter was given by the slope of the linear dependence,and the abso-lute distance was determined by the intercept.The method was applied to measure the distances when dis-placing mirror to different positions.The measured results deviated less than 1% from those of vernier cal-iper and presented a linearity of 99.9%.The thickness of a BK7 glass plate was also measured.An accura-cy of 0.21% was obtained compared with other methods.The reasons that affected the measurement accu-racy were analyzed,and the range of measurable distance was discussed.

Abstract:It is a radical but pressing problem to measure the group refractive index of dispersive material both accurately and rapidly in optical engineering field. In this paper, a white-light spectral interferometric system employing a fiber-optic spectrometer is developed for solving this problem. The system takes advantage of the characteristic of fiber-optic spectrometer which can get all the interferometric information by a single shot image without any mechanical scanning. Compared with the traditional windowed Fourier transform, a wavelet transform algorithm is used to directly extract the group delay rather than the phase from the interferogram. Therefore, the new method can provide a simple and fast solution, while still maintaining high accuracy. Based on this white-light Michelson interferometric system, fused silica and BK7 glass samples are measured respectively and the results agree well with the theoretical values over a broad spectral range. At the end of this paper, different mirror positions are used to verify the repeatability of our method.

Abstract:We present a fiber-based white-light interferometry system capable of nanoscale distance measurement and control. Our prototype contains two cleaved single mode fibers tightly clamped together. Using a supercontinuum white-light source, we can achieve distance control with a standard deviation of <4 nm. This method is potentially suitable for applications that require noncontact measurements or that involve highly deformable structures.

Abstract:The main polarization mode and coupling mode in polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) have some optical path difference because of the internal birefringence. White-light interferometry for testing continuum polarized coupling distributing and discreting polarized coupling distributing in high birefringent waveguide was investigated. The polarization-maintaining parameter was obtained and a concise formula was derived. It can be used to measure the intensity and position of the coupling point accurately according to the relevant theory of modulation and demodulation. PMF and the optical fiber polarizer were measured as examples. The new approach can be utilized to test integrated waveguide elements, PMF, the axis alignment between birefringent waveguide, distributed optical fiber sensors, etc, The most prominent advantage of this method is to measure the polarization-maintaining parameter without any destruction to PMF. It can be used as an effective testing tool in PMF manufacture and application. With the help of this detection method, the performance of optical fiber polarization devices and optical fiber sensors is improved significantly.

Abstract:A reflective displacement sensor utilizing three fibers, one transmitting and two receiving with different core diameters, is described in this paper. On the basis of optical field distribution of multimode fiber, the intensity compensation mechanism of this sensor is analyzed in great detail, at the same time the displacement modulating functions and corresponding simulating carves are presented. Results show that this sensor can effectively compensate for variations in the source intensity, for losses in the optical fibers, and for variations in the reflectivity of the reflector surface.
Field-widened Michelson Interferometer System As the Spectroscopic Filter of High-Spectral-resolution Lidar

Abstract:We propose and develop a field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) system to act as a new type of spectroscopic filter in HSRL application. Due to the field widening characteristic, the FWMI can allow relatively large off-axis incident angle, and can be designed to any desirable wavelength. The theoretical foundations of the FWMI are introduced in this paper, and the developed prototype interferometer is described. It consists of a solid arm made of the glass H-ZF52 with the dimension of 37.876 mm, and an air gap with the length of 20.382 mm. These two interference arms are connected to a cube beam splitter to constitute a Michelson interferometer. Due to the matched dimensions and refractive indices of the two arms, the experimental testing results show that the OPD variation of the developed FWMI is about 0.04 lambda and the RMS is less than 0.008 lambda when the incident angle is as much as 1.5 degree (half angle). The cumulative wavefront distortion caused by the FWMI is less than 0.1 lambda PV value and 0.02 lambda RMS value. To lock the filtering frequency of the FWMI to the laser transmitter, a frequency locking system, which is actually an electro-optic feedback loop, is established. The setup and principle of this frequency locking system are also described in detail. Good locking accuracy of the FWMI about 27MHz is demonstrated through the frequency locking technique. All these results validate the feasibility of this developed FWMI system as a spectroscopic filter of an HSRL.

Abstract:The Michelson interferometer using a source with short coherent length is not only used in polarization to maintain fiber measurement, but is also used in coupling position detection. The coupling accuracy and position accuracy of the white-light interferometer are analyzed. The coupling errors result from the axis angle between fiber principle axis and Glen prism and lock in amplifier errors. The position errors come from rail and step precision.

This is a novel fiber senior combined polarized-light interference technology and fiber sensor technology. The accuracy of this method is 10-2 nm in theory. It is suitable to on-line non-contact measurement and monitor in the production procedure. The principle, research and analysis of experimental results of this interferometer are described.

Abstract:In this work, we experimentally analyzed and demonstrated the performance of an in-line Mach–Zehnder interferometer in the visible region, with an LED light source. The different waist diameter taper and asymmetric core-offset interferometers proposed used a single-mode fiber (SMF). The visibility achieved was V = 0.14 with an FSR of 23 nm for the taper MZI structure and visibilities of V = 0.3, V = 0.27, and V = 0.34 with FSRs of 23 nm, 17 nm, and 8 nm and separation lengths L of 2.5 cm, 4.0 cm, and 5.0 cm between the core-offset structure, respectively. The experimental investigation of the response to the temperature sensor yielded values from 50 °C to 300 °C; the sensitivity obtained was 3.53 a.u./°C, with R2 of 0.99769 and 1% every 1 °C in the transmission. For a range of 50 °C to 150 °C, 20.3 pm/°C with a R2 of 0.96604 was obtained.

Abstract:A fiber heterodyne self-mixing interferometer with orthogonally polarized light compensation is achieved. This system can adapt to various complex scenes while still keeping ultra-high sensitivity and anti-disturbance capability. Ultra-high sensitivity microchip laser is used as the laser source and polarization maintaining(PM) fiber makes the light path easy to accommodate to complex spaces, such as remote or narrow and small space. Besides, orthogonally polarized light inside PM fiber can eliminate the measurement error on account of environment disturbance. Abstract:A Mach–Zehnder interferometer constructed by femtosecond-laser written in-fiber waveguides in no-core fiber (NCF) is demonstrated. Such an interferometer device consists of a section of the NCF in which a waveguide has been inscribed, fusion spliced with single-mode fiber at its two ends. One of the interferometer arms is formed by the waveguide inscribed and the other follows the diverging light path inside the NCF before arriving at the end of single-mode fiber core. Such an internal structure-based device can be used not only for strain sensing but also for external refractive index measurement.
Influence of Angle Misalignment on Detection Polarization Coupling in White Light Interferometer

Abstract:A white light interferometer is designed to measure the distributed polarization coupling (DPC) in polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). By using a Michelson interferometer to compensate the optical path difference induced by the modal birefringence of PMF, both the coupling strength and position of the coupling point can be acquired. The two reflective mirrors on the fixed and scanning arms should be vertical to each other. But in practice, the movable reflective mirror can't be vertically aligned exactly to the fixed mirror, which would lead to angle misalignment. The angle misalignment would induce the variance of the optical path difference (OPD), which would reduce the fringe visibility. Finally, the angle error would lead to a decrease on the signal noise ratio (SNR) and miscalculation of the polarization coupling intensity. The angle misalignment and diameter of the incident light beam both have an effect on the fringe visibility. The simulation results show that the requirement of angle error becomes stricter with the increasing of the light beam diameter. To decrease the angle misalignment, the two plane reflective mirrors should be replaced with the corner cube prisms. A revised coupling strength calculation equation was proposed to minimize the influence of angle misalignment.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple system capable of detecting wavefront information in the wavelength range of 488-1064 nm based on an interferometric system consisting of a ball lens and an aspheric collimator. The design is conducive to short-distance Gaussian beam expansion and collimation at multiple wavelengths. The design principles and performance of the system are described in detail; the measurement precision of the system is verified experimentally by measuring the surface profile of a piece of uncoated N-BK7 glass at various test wavelengths with the proposed setup and with a digital 4D FizCam 2000 interferometer. The highly consistent measurement results of the two methods reveal that the proposed system operates precisely and effectively at various wavelengths. Subsequently, the system is applied to measure the transmitted-wavefront error of a solar filter at a wavelength of 808.0 nm; the measurement results show superb repeatability. The proposed technique avoids the shortcomings of conventional single-working-wavelength interferometric systems, which can neither work in a wide spectrum with high precision nor measure the wavefront properties of many optical bandpass elements in one device; this technique also provides technical support for future applications of high-precision and low-cost wavelength-switchable laser interferometers.

Abstract:A fiber in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on a pair of femtosecond laser inscribed short sections of waveguide is presented. One short waveguide directs part of the propagating light from the fiber core to the cladding-air interface, and experiences multiple total internal reflections before taking back to the fiber core by the other short waveguide. The device is robust in structure, can be fabricated in a fast way and with a flexible manner, and has the capability of ambient refractive index sensing, which makes it highly desirable for many "lab-in-fiber" applications.

Abstract:In this paper,a polarization-maintaining fiber interference structure based on polarization-maintaining fiber,Faraday rotation mirror (FRM),polarization beam splitter (PBS) and polarization-maintaining ring is proposed.The piezoelectric ceramic phase modulator is used in the structure to make the interference work in the optical path linear modulation region to reduce the error caused by the nonlinear optical path modulation of the piezoelectric ceramics.The combination of FRM,polarization-maintaining fiber and polarization-maintaining device ensures the polarization stability of the transmitted light,eliminates the influence of the polarization fading effect,and ensures stable spectral measurement results.The results of SLD (super luminescent diode) were measured and the results were consistent with those obtained by the spectrometer.The results show that the system can measure the stability of the spectrum.The system can be used to provide spectral analysis of commonly used light sources (such as diode lasers,LED and semiconductor lasers,etc.) for fiber optic sensors and communications applications.

Abstract:A high accuracy method for measuring polarization mode distribution in single-mode fiber was designed, which conquered the weakness of classic method for measuring the fiber and fiber component. This system, using short coherent-length such as SLD, is of the accuracy of couple intensity up to -80dB and resolution of survey distance is 10mm. A result of Lyot fiber-depolarizer is given.
