Abstract:We report multicolor upconversion emissions including the blue-violet, green, and red lights in a Tm3+/Er3+ codoped tellurite glass photonic microwire between two silica fiber tapers. A silica fiber is tapered until its evanescent field is exposed and then angled-cleaved at the tapered center to divide the tapered fibers into two parts. A tellurite glass is melted by a gas flame to cluster into a sphere at the tip of one tapered fiber. The other angled-cleaved tapered fiber is blended into the melted tellurite glass. When the tellurite glass is melted, the two silica fiber tapers are simultaneously moving outwards to draw the tellurite glass into a microwire in between. The advantage of angled-cleaving on fiber tapers is to avoid cavity resonances in high index photonic microwire. Thus, the broadband white light can be transmitted between silica fibers and a special optical property like high intensity upconversion emission can be achieved. A cw 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser light is launched into the Tm3+/Er3+ codoped tellurite microwire through a silica fiber taper to generate the multicolor upconversion emissions, including the blue-violet, green, and red lights, simultaneously. Abstract:Frequency upconverted fluorescence from UV to infrared (387.4 nm, 477.4 nm, 651.4 nm, 802.9 nm) has observed and studied in homemade Tm3+-doped silica fibers pumped by CW Nd3 YLF laser at 1053 nm. The pump mechanism was given that red and blue light were produced through stepwise three-photo absorption and infrared light was done through stepwise two-photo absorption. The shoulder peak of blue and red light were also analyzed with all fluorescence spectra being measured.

Abstract:The spectroscopic properties of Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped silica fibers under excitation at 980 nm are reported. Three distinct up-conversion fluorescence bands were observed in the visible to near infra-red regions. The blue and red fluorescence bands at 475 and 650 nm, respectively, were found to originate from the 1G4 level of Tm3+. A three step up-conversion process was established as the populating mechanism for these fluorescence bands. The fluorescence band at 800 nm was found to originate from two possible transitions in Tm3+; one being the transition from the 3H4 to 3H6 manifold which was found to dominate at low pump powers; the other being the transition from the 1G4 to 3H6 level which dominates at higher pump powers. The fluorescence lifetime of the 3H4 and 3F4 levels of Tm3+ and 2F5/2 level of Yb3+ were studied as a function of Yb3+ concentration, with no significant energy back transfer from Tm3+ to Yb3+ observed.

Abstract:Er3+-Yb3+ codoped oxy-fluoro-tungstosilicate glasses with infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion luminescence were prepared by melting quenching in air. The effects of Er3+ doping on the optical properties of the samples were measured by means of techniques such as optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. The results showed that intense green and red signals centered at 546 and 665 nm, corresponding to the 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ by a multiphoton stepwise phonon-assisted excited-state absorption process, respectively, were simultaneously observed by exciting the samples with a diode laser operating at 980 nm at room temperature. The upconversion process was found very sensitive to Er3+ content at a constant Yb2O3 content of 5 mol.%. With the increase of Er3+ content from 0.5% to 1.5%, the upconversion intensity increased gradually. Further increasing of Er3+ content to 3.0% resulted in a significant fluorescence quenching. Moreover, the possible upconversion mechanisms were discussed based on the energy-matching conditions and the quadratic dependence on excitation power.

Abstract:The up conversion processes were investigated in highly doped Er 3+ Yb 3+ silica fiber pumped by CW or mode locked Ti∶Sapphire laser at 800 nm band. The mechanism is different from that at 980 nm pumped band. The pumping wavelength and power dependences of green, blue and red fluorescence emission were obtained. The up conversion efficiencies of different doped concentration were investigated. The strong infrared emissions, which limit the efficiency of up conversion were observed.

Abstract:This paper reports that upconversion phenomenon exists in TM3+-doped tellurite glass by pumping with both 793, nm and 1064nm lasers. Strong 785nm two-photon upconversion fluorescence of (1)G(4)-->H-3(5) transition and weak three-photon upconversion 710nm, 677nm, fluorescence pumped by 793 nm Ti:Al2O3 laser has been observed firstly in TM3+-doped tellurite glass. Upconversion has also been observed under excitation at 1064nm.

Abstract:Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+-doped transparent alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their microstructures and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals enriched with Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ in the glass ceramics was confirmed by XRD, HRTEM and SAED. The glass ceramics exhibited intense upconversion luminescence behaviors, owing to efficient energy transfers from Yb3+ to Er3+ and Tb3+ and low phonon assistant non-radiative transition probabilities of excited Er3+ and Tb3+. The upconversion could be enhanced significantly by increasing the annealing temperature and the luminescence color could be adjusted by varying the Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ ratio. Upconversion of Er3+ could be described as sequential energy transfer from single Yb3+ to single Er3+, while upconversion of Tb3+ described as cooperative energy transfer from double Yb3+ to single Tb3+.
On the laser frequency upconversion from 1313nm to 780nm in the Er3+-doped and Er3+/Yb3+-doped germanosilicate single-mode optical fibers

Abstract:The frequency upconversion of a 1313nm Nd:YLF laser pulse to 780nm through the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in the Er3+-doped and Er3+/Yb3+-doped GeO2/SiO2 single-mode optical fibers pumped by a CW mode-locked (CW+ML) laser or a Q-switched mode-locked (QS+ML) laser was observed respectively. It was found that the emission at 780nm corresponds to 4I9/2 -4I15/2 transition, and its pumping mechanism is accomplished by a first step resonant two-photon absorption to 4F9/2 state, followed by a fast nonradiative relaxation to 4I9/2 state. The conversion efficiency pumped by the CW+ML laser is higher than the one pumped by the QS QS+ML laser with the peak laser power being several hundred times higher.
Frequency upconversion in germanosilicate single-mode optical fiber

Abstract:Generation of visible light at 588 nm with peak power as high as 20 W through efficient frequency upconversion of 1.313 micrometer Q-switched and mode-locked Nd: YLF laser pulse in a standard communication single-mode germanosilicate optical fiber was reported. The measured conversion efficiency is 0.09% in 21 m fiber at 24 KW peak pump power. A blue-green light with multi-peak continues spectrum structure at 46-560 nm generated by three-wave sum-frequency is also observed. The frequency upconversion process of blue green light is competing with the process of generating visible light at 588 nm.

Abstract:In this letter, we report on a multiple-wavelength up-conversion laser in Tm3+ -doped ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF glass fiber pumped by an 1120-nm fiber laser. Single-wavelength, two-wavelength, and three-wavelength up-conversion lasers can be obtained by adjusting the distance between the coupler mirror and the fiber end, which is attributed to the frequency-filter effect in the etalon composed of the coupler mirror and the fiber end. The effects of the pump power on the performance of dual-wavelength laser were also discussed.

Abstract:In this report, we investigate the cooperative energy transfer frequency upconversion in Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped SiO2-Al(2)O(3)-Na2O-ZnF(2) oxyfluoride glasses under 980 nm diode laser excitation. The influence of both Tb3+ and Yb3+ concentration on the emission bands were investigated. With a lower Tb3+ concentration, the emission bands around 381, 416 and 438 nm, and 489, 545, 587 and 623 nm associated with (5)D(3), (5)G(6)-->(7)F(J) (J=6, 5, 4) and (5)D(4)-->(7)F(J) (J=6, 5, 4, 3) transitions were observed. However, only (5)D(4)-->(7)F(J) (J=6, 5, 4, 3) transitions appear in a higher Tb3+ concentration. The integrated upconversion luminescence intensity was examined when the temperature of sample was varied from 40 to 450 K. The dependence of the upconversion emission intensity upon the excitation power was also examined, and the upconversion mechanisms were discussed.

Abstract:Cr3+/Tm3+ co-doped fluorogermanate glasses were prepared by melt-quenching technique, and their luminescent properties were investigated under excitation of Xenon lamp and 808 nm laser diode, respectively. Through strong sensitization of Cr3+, an enhanced 1.8 µm emission band of Tm3+: 3F4→3H6 can be achieved in an extremely extended excitation band of 380-900 nm. The possible energy transfer mechanism between Cr3+ and Tm3+ is rationally discussed. On the basis of experimental data, the highest energy transfer efficiency is up to 91.70%. Our results suggest this efficient Cr3+/Tm3+ co-doping system provides a selective pump mechanism for obtaining 1.8 µm laser and thus shows attractive applications in near-infrared fiber lasers and amplifiers.

Abstract:A detailed study of the fluorescence emission properties and energy transfer mechanism in Er3+/Tm3+ co-doped lead silicate glasses was reported. Enhanced near infrared 1.8 μm and visible up-conversion emissions were investigated under 808 and 980 nm excitations, respectively. The energy transfer mechanism between Er3+ and Tm3+ was analyzed according to the absorption spectra, the emission spectra and the level structures of Er3+ and Tm3+. The energy transfer efficiency between Er3+ and Tm3+ reached 68.1% in the Er3+/Tm3+ co-doped lead silicate glasses when pumped by 808 nm laser diode. Based on the absorption spectra, the Judd-Ofelt parameters, spontaneous emission probability, absorption and emission cross sections, gain coefficients were calculated and analyzed. It was found that the calculated emission cross section and the maximum gain coefficient around 1.8 μm were 4.9×10−21 cm2 and 1.12 cm−1, respectively. These results indicated that the Er3+/Tm3+ co-doped lead-silicate glasses had potential application in near infrared lasers.

Abstract:Absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra in Er3+-doped phosphate glasses have been measured. Some emission parameters, such as emission cross section, spontaneous emission probability, and fluorescence linewidth of the Er3+-doped phosphate glass, have been calculated. Upconversion of 1.064 μm Nd:YAG laser pulses into intense green 547 nm and red 667 nm light in a Er3+-doped phosphate glass fiber has been achieved. Fluorescence efficiencies of the two signals, green 547 nm and red 667 nm fluorescences, are 1.78 × 10−2% and 4.2 × 10−3%, respectively. The two signals are refered to 4S32→4I152 and 4F92→4I152 radiative transitions by two-photon absorption fluorescence.

Abstract:Ultraviolet upconversion emissions from high energy levels (D-5(1), L-5(8), L-5(9), (5)G(5), and L-5(10)) of Tb3+ were observed in the NaYF4:Tb3+, Yb3+ microcrystals under excitation of a 976 nm laser diode at room temperature. These energy levels were populated by energy transfer and excited state absorption processes. Power dependence measurements confirmed it was caused by a three-photon upconversion process. Abstract:We report on near infrared to visible upconversion luminescence in Tb3+-doped SrO-TiO2-SiO2 glass excited at 800nm by using femtosecond laser irradiation. The luminescence spectra of the glass are similar for femtoseeond laser irradiation and excitation at 267nm with a Xe lamp. The upconversion lumi-nescence can be assigned to 5D3→7F4 and 5D4→7FJ(J=6, 5, 4, 3) transitions of Tb3+. The relationship between the emission intensity of Tb3+ and the pump power indicates that a three-photon simultaneous ab-sorption process is dominant in the conversion of infrared to the green luminescence. We suggest that the simultaneous absorption of three infrared photons promotes the Tb3+ to excited states, which quickly cas-cade down to lower excited states, and radiatively relax to terminal states, resulting in the characteristic fluorescence of Tb3+. This has promising applications in three dimensional display, visible lasers and high-resolution optical data storage.

Abstract:The preliminary experimental results of the generation of the 1.871 μm laser oscillation from a monomode Tm3+-doped silicate fiber pumped by a 1.053 μm laser is reported. The maximum output power is 153 μW, and the slope efficiency is 0.32%.
