Abstract:TPR processes of Mo-Ce oxides were studied by XRD,IR and TG. The results showed that the interactions of metal ions in oxides lowered the activation energy of the reduction reaction of these oxides with H2, and thus improved the catalytic activities of the oxides catalysts.

Abstract:Low-temperature selective catalytic reduction with NH3 (LT-SCR) is a promising approach for NOx remediation. This work utilized bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to prepare CeMOx (M=Ti, Cu) catalysts allowing the homogeneous distribution of promoters to investigate LT-SCR explicitly. The strong interfacial interaction between nanoscale-mixed components was characterized on CeTiOx by HRTEM, micro-Raman, and XPS, resulting in high acidity and good redox properties with abundant Ce3+ and Ti4+. It obtained over 80% conversion from 180 degrees C to 300 degrees C with 100% N2 selectivity, and maintained stable performance in SO2/H2O at a high GHSV of 150,000 h-1. In situ DRIFTS reveals that NH3 adsorption was promoted on CeTiOx, which accelerated reaction between NOx and adsorbed NH3 via Eley-Rideal mechanism. Meanwhile, the aliovalent substitution of ceria by Cu2+ was observed on CeCuOx, forming oxygen vacancies. Its high redox properties enhanced NOx conversion by Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, but triggered NH3 peroxidation, leading to poor N2 selectivity.

Abstract:TPR processes of Fe-Ce oxides were studied by in situ Mössbauer spectroscopy and XRD. Three peaks were observed in the TPR profile of the sample, indicating the three reduction stages of the Fe-Ce oxide. The raise of the avtivation energy and temperature of the reduction reaction of the oxides with H2 were the evidence of strong interactions of metal ions in oxides.

Abstract:The reduction processes of Fe-Mo-O catalysts with different Fe/Mo atomic ratios were studied by means of temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). In particular, the reduction process of a sample with an Fe/Mo ratio of 0.29 was investigated in detail in combination with in situ Mössbauer spectroscopy (MBS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five peaks are observed in the TPR profile of this sample with peak temperatures at 853, 910, 952, 1014, and 1233 K, respectively, indicating that the reduction of the catalyst proceeds via five stages. MBS and XRD showed that the phases in the sample are MoO3 and Fe2(MoO4)3 before TPR. At the first TPR peak (853 K), Fe2(MoO4)3 was completely transformed into β-FeMoO4 and Mo4O11, while MoO3 was not affected. The β-FeMoO4 phase that formed can convert to α-FeMoO4 when the reduced sample is exposed to air at room temperature. The second TPR peak (910 K) corresponds to the reduction of MoO3 to MoO2. At the third TPR peak (952 K), Mo4O11 was reduced to MoO2 and most of the β-FeMoO4 was transformed to Fe2Mo3O8 and Fe3O4. The Mössbauer spectrum of FeMo3O8 can be fitted with two doublets (IS = 0.90 mm/sec, QS = 0.58 mm/sec and IS = 1.03 mm/sec, QS = 1.05 mm/sec). It is interesting to note that at this stage some Fe2+ ions were reoxidized to Fe3+, and Fe3O4 is formed, probably due to the reaction between Mo6+ and Fe2+ in β-FeMoO4. At the fourth TPR peak (1014 K), β-FeMoO4 was completely converted and the Fe-Mo alloy (a singlet in the Mössbauer spectrum with IS = -0.21 mm/sec) was formed, resulting from the reduction of MoO2 and Fe3O4 or Fe2Mo3O8. At the last peak (1233 K), all the metal oxides (MoO2 and Fe3O4 or Fe2Mo3O8) were reduced to metals. The products detected are Fe3Mo alloy and metallic molybdenum.
Co Oxidation Activity and Tpr Characterization of Ceo2-Supported Manganese Oxide Catalysts

Abstract:Cerium dioxide supported manganese oxide catalysts have been prepared and their catalytic activities for CO oxidation investigated. The catalysts have been characterized by using TPR and XRD. Only a small amount of Mn (10%) is needed to form active sites for CO oxidation, and the excess Mn oxide form bulk MnO2 particles which may cover a part of the active Mn oxide species resulting in the decrease of the catalytic activity. The catalytic activity also depends on the calcination temperature. The optimum calcination temperature is 600 degrees C. Two reduction peaks are observed in all Mn/CeO2(400 degrees C) catalyst The low-temperature peak is attributed to reduction of MnO2 or/and Mn2O3 to form Mn3O4; while the high-temperature peak is attributed to the reduction of Mn3O4 forming MnO. The MnO species on the reduced catalyst is more easily reoxidized to Mn3O4 than to MnO2. The average valence number of Mn atom in the catalyst decreases with increase in calcination temperature, and increases with Mn loading.

Abstract:The reducibility and characteristics of CuO, CeO2 and CuO/CeO2 catalysts were examined by means of a CO microreactor gas chromatography, specific surface area, pore volume, H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and X-ray diffraction Rietveld analysis. Experimental results showed that the specific surface area and pore volume of the CuO/CeO2 catalysts decreased with an increase in CuO loading, whereas the average pore diameter was the same. TPR data exhibited two peaks, a low-temperature one due to the reduction of highly dispersed copper oxide and a high-temperature one due to the reduction of bulk CuO. Micro-structural analysis showed that the lattice constant of pure CeO2 is 0.54103 nm. In contrast, when CuO/CeO2 was formed, the cell parameter values of CeO2 for various loading were all smaller than that of pure CeO2, indicating that some CuO entered the CeO2 lattice. At a CuO loading of 5.0 wt.%, the crystalline size of CuO became minimal and the micro-strain maximal, indicating crystalline CuO and a high surface energy with a resulting best activity for CO oxidation. CuO/CeO2 catalysts are stable to 750°C, but at 900°C the crystallite size increased rapidly and the CuO and CeO2 phase-separated.
Unveiling the Ce-Mn ion redox behavior at the interface of CeO2/YbMn2O5 for low-temperature CO oxidation

Abstract:A series of CeO2/YbMn2O5 composite catalysts with varying CeO2 ratios are successfully synthesized using a typical co-precipitation method. The aim was to investigate the catalytic performance for CO oxidation to well understand the structure-activity relationship. Among all these catalysts, we observed that the complete oxidation temperature of the 30%-CeO2/YbMn2O5 catalyst for CO can be significantly reduced to around 240 °C. The results of XPS, BET, O2-TPD, CO-TPR, CO2-TPD and a range of characterizations have indicated that the CeO2/YbMn2O5 catalyst facilitates the redox cycle (Ce3+ + Mn4+ ↔ Ce4+ + Mn3+) on the CeO2-YbMn2O5 interface. This, in turn, improves the efficiency of electron transfer, increases active reaction sites, and further promotes activation of reactant molecules. This study provides a foundation for the research of composite catalysts based on mullite-type transition metal oxides in the field of CO catalysis.

Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) catalysts doped with different metal ions were prepared by sol-gel or impregnation methods, and their catalytic activity for soot combustion was evaluated by thermogravimetry. Temperature-programmed reduction was used to investigate the influence of their redox properties on soot combustion performance. The results indicate that the oxidation temperature of soot can be significantly reduced using catalysts containing transition metals, which provide increased surface and lattice oxygen compared with undoped CeO2. The ability of each catalyst to deliver active oxygen at low temperature (200-400 degrees C) plays an important role in determining catalytic performance. However, incorporation of structure promoter, alkali metals, and alkaline earth metals increase the delivery of active oxygen only at moderate temperature (above 400 degrees C), which accelerate the combustion rate of soot. Promoting Effect of Zro2 Carrier on Activity and Thermal Stability of Ceo2-Based Oxides Catalysts for Toluene Combustion

Abstract:ZrO2 was used as a support for the preparation of Cu-Mn-Ce mixed oxides catalysts (CMC) by impregnation method and calcination at different temperatures. A model reaction, toluene combustion was conducted to evaluate the performance of CMC/ZrO2 catalysts. High thermal stability and activity was obtained on these catalysts. The effects of CMC loading and calcination temperature on the structure and redox properties of catalysts were also investigated by XRD, H-2-TPR, TEM and XPS. Results show that calcination leads to the interaction of ZrO2 and CMC via the formation of a new phase of Zr0.88Ce0.12O2 in the interface, which is more likely to be formed in the catalysts with low CMC loading levels. Zr0.88Ce0.12O2 seems to function as the actual carrier of active phase of CMC, which cannot only stabilize the surface active structure of CMC but also enhance the mobility of active oxygen and improve the catalytic performance of total oxidation as well. Abstract:In a H2/N2 atmosphere, the reduction processes of Mg–Fe–O and Mg–Fe–Al–O complex oxide catalysts, derived from their hydrotalcite precursors, were studied by means of temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). In particular, the reduction process of the Mg–Fe–O samples with a Mg/Fe ratio of 1/1 and Mg–Fe–Al–O with a Mg/Fe/Al ratio of 2/1/1 were investigated in detail in combination with in situ Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). For the Mg–Fe–O sample, two peaks were observed in the TPR profile with peak temperatures at 446 and 696°C, respectively, indicating that the reduction of the oxide catalyst proceeded via two stages. Mössbauer spectroscopy and XRD showed that the phases in the sample were MgFe2O4 and MgO before TPR. At the first TPR peak (446°C), MgFe2O4 was completely reduced to Mg1−xFexO. The Mössbauer spectrum of Mg1−xFexO exhibited a doublet with IS=0.83 mm/s and QS=0.87 mm/s. The second TPR peak (696°C) corresponded to the reduction of Mg1−xFexO to Fe0. For the Mg–Fe–Al–O sample, two peaks were also observed in the TPR profile with temperatures at 506 and 936°C, respectively. Mössbauer spectroscopy and XRD showed that the phases in the sample were α-Fe2O3, MgFeAlO4, and MgO before TPR. The Mössbauer spectrum of MgFeAlO4 was a doublet with IS=0.33 mm/s and QS=0.76 mm/s. At the first TPR peak (506°C), α-Fe2O3 was reduced to Fe2+ and Fe0, while MgFeAlO4 was transformed into Mg1−xFexO. The second TPR peak (936°C) corresponded to the reduction of Mg1−xFexO to metallic Fe0. Effects of the presence of magnesium and aluminum in the solid solutions on the reduction of iron species were discussed.
Does H2 Temperature‐Programmed Reduction Always Probe Solid‐State Redox Chemistry? The Case of Pt/CeO2

Abstract:Redox reactions on the surface of transition metal oxides are of broad interest in thermo, photo, and electrocatalysis. H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) is commonly used to probe oxide reducibility by measuring the rate of H2 consumption during temperature ramps, assuming that this rate is controlled by oxide reduction. However, oxide reduction involves several elementary steps, such as H2 dissociation and H-spillover, before surface reduction and H2O formation occur. In this study, we evaluated the kinetics of H2 consumption over CeO2 and Pt/CeO2 with varying Pt loadings and structures to identify the elementary steps probed by H2-TPR. Literature often attributes changes in H2-TPR characteristics with Pt addition to increased CeO2 reducibility. However, our analysis revealed that the H2 consumption rate is measurement of the rate of H-spillover at Pt-CeO2 interfaces and is determined by the concentration of Pt species on Pt nanoclusters that dissociate H2. Therefore, lower temperature H2 consumption observed with Pt addition does not indicate higher CeO2 reducibility. Measurements on samples with mixtures of Pt single-atoms and nanoclusters demonstrated that H2-TPR can effectively quantify dilute Pt nanocluster concentrations, suggesting caution in directly linking H2-TPR characteristics to oxide reducibility while highlighting alternative material insights that can be gleaned.

Abstract:The reductive behavior of iron-based shift catalyst promoted by cerium oxide was investigated by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). Two reduction peaks appeared, centered at 473 and 673 K in reduction gas mixtures. The peaks illustrated that the reduced surface states were different, corresponding the reductive temperatures. The optimum reductive temperature range is from 423 to 723 K for the catalyst. The results of temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and pulse reaction indicated that the mechanism of the water-gas shift reaction on the catalyst can be considered as a redox process. The reduced Fe-Ce-Cr-O can be oxidized by water and carbon dioxide at reaction temperatures(from 573 to 673 K). Water is decomposed to form hydrogen and adsorbed hydroxyl groups, and carbon monoxide reacts with hydroxyl groups to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide simultaneously. FT-IR spectroscopy results showed that iron-based catalyst promoted by CeO2 is a structurally sensitive catalyst. It has excellent activity, selectivity, and stability under reaction conditions. Moreover, on the catalyst surface carbonate-like species were not found under reaction conditions, as established by IR spectra. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
Redox Property of Ce1-xZrxO2 and Its Effect on CO2 Reforming of CH4

Abstract:The structure and redox properties of Ce1-xZrxO2 (0 <= x <= 1) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR). The catalytic performance of the Ce1-xZrxO2 catalysts for CO2 reforming of CH4 was investigated at 700 similar to 850 degrees C. The results of XRD and TPR showed that the samples existed as a cubic Ce-Zr-O solid solution and their reducibility increased with increasing Zr content when x <= 0.25; while a tetragonal ZrO2 phase mixed with a cubic Ce-Zr-O solid solution was detected for samples with x > 0.25 and the overall reducibility of the mixed phases decreased with increasing Zr content. Thus, the sample with x = 0.25, Ce0.75Zr0.25O2, showed the highest reducibility. The catalytic performance of the Ce1-x ZrxO2, catalysts was closely related to their reducibility. The Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 catalyst with the highest reducibility also showed the highest catalytic activity and stability for the reforming of CH4 with CO2.
Study on synthesis and modification of Ti/Ce composite oxide

Abstract:The mono-oxides were prepared by combustion. Ti/Ce composite oxides were prepared by the heterogeneous nucleation-precipitation method. The samples were characterized by XRD, IR, UV-vis, SEM. The TiO2-CeO2 composite oxides were modified. The type, amount, temperature, pH of modifier were studied and optimal modification process was decided. Modification effect was evaluated by the degree of oil-affinity. The experiment results show that modifying condition of TiO2/CeO2 are titanate as modifier, modification temperature of 55°C, amount of modifier of 5%, pH of 6, modification time of 60 min. The modifying condition of CeO2/TiO2 are titanate as modifier, modification temperature of 45°C, amount of modifier of 5%, pH of 7, modification time of 60 min. The modified samples have less particle size change, enhance its solubility in the matrix and expand its applicability.

Abstract:Changes in chemical state and structural transformations occurring in a series of MOx/CeO2 (M = Cu, Ni and Fe) powder catalysts upon reaction with methane were investigated using in situ time-resolved Xray diffraction (TR-XRD), ex situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES)/extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS shows the presence of adsorbed CHx and COx species after exposing the powder catalysts to methane at room temperature. Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) measurements point to reaction of the samples with methane and formation of CO, CO2, and H2O gas at temperatures as low as 100 degrees C. The TR-XRD results show that all of the transition-metal oxides in the as-prepared catalysts can be reduced to their metallic phase during the CH4-TPR process with the ceria support undergoing significant reduction from surface to bulk, yet the reduction temperature varies for different MOx/CeO2 samples. Among these samples, CuOx/CeO2 shows the lowest reduction temperature (below 260 degrees C) for both the oxide overlayer and the ceria support. The NiOx/CeO2 and CoOx/CeO2 powder catalysts also activate CH4 at relatively low temperatures (below 350 degrees C), and the oxide overlayers undergo NiO -> Ni and Co3O4 -> CoO -> Co transformations. In the case of FeOx/CeOv, a series of complex changes in chemical state is observed for the oxide overlayer, Fe2O3 -> Fe3O4 -> FeO -> Fe -> Fe3C. The ceria support of the three MOx/CeO2 (M = Cu, Ni, and Fe) samples undergoes severe reduction and forms Ce2O3 at high temperature (>650 degrees C) during the CH4-TPR reaction. The in situ TR-XRD results highlight a rich and complex chemistry for methane on these MOx/CeO2 mixed oxide systems.
MOF-Derived CeO2 and CeZrOx Solid Solutions: Exploring Ce Reduction through FTIR and NEXAFS Spectroscopy

Abstract:The development of Ce-based materials is directly dependent on the catalyst surface defects, which is caused by the calcination steps required to increase structural stability. At the same time, the evaluation of cerium's redox properties under reaction conditions is of increasing relevant importance. The synthesis of Ce-UiO-66 and CeZr-UiO-66 and their subsequent calcination are presented here as a simple and inexpensive approach for achieving homogeneous and stable CeO2 and CeZrOx nanocrystals. The resulting materials constitute an ideal case study to thoroughly understand cerium redox properties. The Ce3+/Ce4+ redox properties are investigated by H2-TPR experiments exploited by in situ FT-IR and Ce M5-edge AP-NEXAFS spectroscopy. In the latter case, Ce3+ formation is quantified using the MCR-ALS protocol. FT-IR is then presented as a high potential/easily accessible technique for extracting valuable information about the cerium oxidation state under operating conditions. The dependence of the OH stretching vibration frequency on temperature and Ce reduction is described, providing a novel tool for qualitative monitoring of surface oxygen vacancy formation. Based on the reported results, the molecular absorption coefficient of the Ce3+ characteristic IR transition is tentatively evaluated, thus providing a basis for future Ce3+ quantification through FT-IR spectroscopy. Finally, the FT-IR limitations for Ce3+ quantification are discussed.
Effect of calcination temperature on the structure and performance of rod-like MnCeOx derived from MOFs catalysts

Abstract:In our work, metal organic framework (MOFs)-derived MnCeOx catalysts were synthesized by different calcination temperatures. Effect of calcination temperature was characterized by thermogravimetric (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), N2 adsorption-desorption (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed H2 reduction (H2-TPR). Performance testing of toluene found that 1Mn1Ce-300 showed the best performance (T90 = 244 °C), good durability and reliable water resistance in catalyzing toluene. The better catalytic performance of 1Mn1Ce-300 was attributed to the higher molar ratios of Ce3+/Ce4+, Mn3+/Mn4+ and Oads/Olatt, more adsorbed oxygen, surface oxygen vacancy and better low-temperature reduction. In situ diffuse reflectance, infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in-situ DRIFTS) and thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) proved that benzoic acid and benzene were the main intermediates. Activity and Characterization of Ce–Mo–Ti Mixed Oxide Catalysts Prepared by a Homogeneous Precipitation Method for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3

Abstract:A series of Ce-Mo-Ti mixed oxide catalysts prepared by a homogeneous precipitation method were evaluated for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3. These catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM and H-2-TPR. The experimental results indicated that the optimal Ce-Mo-Ti mixed oxide catalyst (Ce40Mo10Ti) exhibited excellent SCR activity in a wide temperature range of 250-450 degrees C as well as strong resistance to high gas hourly space velocity, 10% H2O or/and 1000 ppm SO2. The introduction of Mo could enhance redox property and increase the amount of Ce3+, accompanied by the increment of oxygen vacancies and adsorbed oxygen species on the catalyst surface, which were advantageous to the SCR reaction over Ce-Mo-Ti oxide catalyst. In addition, good dispersion of Ce and Mo species on TiO2 and their synergetic interaction also contributed to its remarkable NH3-SCR performance. (C) 2018 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers. Abstract:Rare earth oxide doped molybdenum powders were prepared by the reduction of rare earth nitrites doped MoO_3. The effect of rare earth oxide on the reduction behavior of molybdenum oxide had been studied by means of Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR), thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction. Doping rare earth oxide in the powder could lower the reduction temperature of molybdenum oxide and decrease the particle size of molybdenum. The mechanism for the effects had been discussed in this paper.

Abstract:A series of Ce-Mo oxide catalysts with different Ce/Mo atomic ratio were prepared and applied to selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde. The structures and properties of the surfaces of catalysts were characterized by XRD, TPR and DR-UVS. The natures of oxygen species on the surfaces of these samples were studied by using temperature programmed desorption-mass spectrography (TPD-MS). The results showed that the oxygen species of multiple adsorption existed on the sample surface. And in the range of desorption temperature < 900 degrees C, for the Ce-Mo samples, not only the desorption peaks of O- species on surfaces of samples be discoved, but also the O2- - species appeared. As the content of Ce in Ce-Mo oxides was changed, the activation energy of oxygen desorption (E-d) also changed. The E-d value of sample 3 (Ce/Mo = 1/1) is the lowest and its selectivity of benzaldehyde in toluene oxidation is the highest. Thus, a parallel relation between the Ed value and the selectivity for benzaldehyde existed in these Ce-Mo oxides.
