Abstract:Low-temperature selective catalytic reduction with NH3 (LT-SCR) is a promising approach for NOx remediation. This work utilized bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to prepare CeMOx (M=Ti, Cu) catalysts allowing the homogeneous distribution of promoters to investigate LT-SCR explicitly. The strong interfacial interaction between nanoscale-mixed components was characterized on CeTiOx by HRTEM, micro-Raman, and XPS, resulting in high acidity and good redox properties with abundant Ce3+ and Ti4+. It obtained over 80% conversion from 180 degrees C to 300 degrees C with 100% N2 selectivity, and maintained stable performance in SO2/H2O at a high GHSV of 150,000 h-1. In situ DRIFTS reveals that NH3 adsorption was promoted on CeTiOx, which accelerated reaction between NOx and adsorbed NH3 via Eley-Rideal mechanism. Meanwhile, the aliovalent substitution of ceria by Cu2+ was observed on CeCuOx, forming oxygen vacancies. Its high redox properties enhanced NOx conversion by Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, but triggered NH3 peroxidation, leading to poor N2 selectivity.
Deciphering the Ce3+ to Ce4+ Evolution: Insight from X‐ray Raman Scattering Spectroscopy at Ce N4,5 Edges

Abstract:Cerium oxide, or ceria, (CeO2) is one of the most studied materials for its wide range of applications in heterogeneous catalysis and energy conversion technologies. The key feature of ceria is the remarkable oxygen storage capacity linked to the switch between Ce4+ and Ce3+ states, in turn creating oxygen vacancies. Changes in the electronic structure occur with oxygen removal from the lattice. Accordingly, the two valence electrons can be accommodated by the reduction of support cations where the electrons can be localized in empty f states of Ce4+ ions nearby. Quantifying the different oxidation states in situ is crucial to understand and model the reaction mechanism. Beside the different techniques to quantify Ce3+ and Ce4+ states, we discuss the use of X‐ray Raman Scattering (XRS) spectroscopy as an alternative method. In particular, we show that XRS can observe the oxidation state changes of cerium directly in the bulk of the materials under realistic environmental conditions. The Hilbert++ code is used to simulate the XRS spectra and quantify accurately the Ce3+ and Ce4+ content. These results are compared to those obtained from in situ X‐ray Diffraction (XRD) collected in parallel and the differences arising from the two different probes are discussed.

Abstract:A nanocrystalline Ce–Sm–oxide solid solution, with an excellent redox property and remarkable oxygen storage/release capacity, has been synthesized by means of a simple and highly practicable coprecipitation method. To understand the thermal and textural stability, the synthesized catalyst was subjected to calcination at various temperatures (773–1073 K). Physicochemical characterization was achieved using XRD, HRTEM, BET surface area, Raman, ICP-OES, XPS, TG-TDA, UV-vis DRS, TPR, and FTIR techniques, and the catalytic performance was evaluated for the oxidation of CO. Coprecipitation of Ce4+ and Sm3+ ions through ultra-high dilute solutions provided the single phase Ce0.6Sm0.4O2−δ solid solution in the nanoscale range, as confirmed by XRD and TEM studies. Raman studies revealed two types of lattice defects, namely, oxygen vacancies and MO8 complex defects due to disparity in the oxidation state and ionic radius of Sm3+ and Ce4+, respectively. Calculations made from XPS atomic ratios (Ce/Sm) and Raman band intensity ratios (AD1/AF2g) indicated migration of Sm from the bulk to the surface at elevated temperatures that caused a negative effect on the oxygen vacancy concentration. The doping of Sm3+ into the ceria lattice effectively enhanced the reduction behaviour of ceria by shifting the surface and bulk reduction to lower temperatures. Remarkably, Sm-incorporation showed an optimistic influence on the oxygen storage ability and CO oxidation efficiency of ceria attributed to profound lattice defects and enhanced bulk oxygen mobility. The salient features of physicochemical characterization versus catalytic CO oxidation efficiency of Ce–Sm–oxide solid solutions have been elaborated in this article.

Abstract:Cerium‐based Metal‐Organic frameworks (Ce‐MOFs) are attracting increasing interest due to their similar structural features to zirconium MOFs. The redox behavior of Ce(III/IV) adds a range of properties to the compounds. Recently, perfluorinated linkers have been used in the synthesis of MOFs to introduce new characteristic into the structure. We report the synthesis and structural characterization of Ce(IV)‐based MOFs constructed using two perfluorinated alkyl linkers. Their structure, based on hexanuclear Ce6O4(OH)412+ clusters linked to each other by the dicarboxylate ions, has been solved ab‐initio from X‐ray powder diffraction data and refined by the Rietveld method. The crystallization kinetics and the MOF formation mechanism was also invesitigated by Synchrotron radiation with XAS spectroscopies (EXAFS and XANES). The MOFs present the same fcu cubic topology as observed in MOF‐801 and UiO‐66, and they showed good stability in water at different pH conditions. The electronic structure of these MOFs has been studied by DFT calculations in order to obtain insights into the density of states structure of the reported compounds, resulting in band gaps in the range of 2.8‐3.1 eV. Their catalytic properties were tested both thermally and under visible light irradiation for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye.

Urea-Based Hydrothermally Derived Homogeneous Nanostructured Ce1-Xzrxo2 (X=0-0.8) Solid Solutions: A Strong Correlation Between Oxygen Storage Capacity and Lattice Strain

Abstract:Ce1-xZrxO2 (x = 0-0.8) nanoparticulate powders were prepared via a mild urea hydrolysis based hydrothermal method through homogeneous nucleation at 413 K followed by calcination at 773 or 1173 K. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) measurements testify to the good stoichiometric homogeneity of Ce and Zr cations in the as-obtained Ce1-xZrxO2 products. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra exhibit that both surface and bulk ratios of Ce3+ to Ce4+ for the as-prepared Ce1-xZrxO2 nanocrystals increased with the zirconium content x. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns and Raman spectra demonstrate that the present Ce1-xZrxO2 samples were single-phase solid solutions with good structural homogeneity and high thermal stability up to 1273 K, and those with x = 0.4-0.6 retained a pseudocubic structure (t" phase) due to the small crystallite size effect. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs reveal that the as-prepared CeO2-ZrO2 nanocrystals were highly crystallized with narrow size distribution. Nitrogen adsorption measurements show that the BET specific surface areas of the Ce1-xZrxO2 powders were improved by the incorporation of ZrO2. The PXRD data and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) images illuminate that the as-prepared and as-calcined Ce1-xZrxO2 (x = 0.4-0.6) powders kept a rather high strain level in the crystal lattice. The lattice strains in our Ce1-xZrxO2 catalysts show a linear relationship with their oxygen storage capacity (OSC) values. This linear correlation is explained on the basis of qualitative structural and defective analysis, and might find use in the screening and design of better-performing three-way catalysts (TWCs). The highest CO-OSC values of the studied CeO2-ZrO2 catalysts appeared for Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 (543 mumol of CO g(-1) at 773 K and 628 mumol of CO g(-1) at 973 K).

Abstract:In this work, we study the influence of the average crystallite size and dopant oxide on the reducibility of CeO2-based nanomaterials. Samples were prepared from commercial Gd2O3-, Sm2O3- and Y2O3-doped CeO2 powders by calcination at different temperatures ranging between 400 and 900C and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and BET specific surface area. The reducibility of the samples was analyzed by temperature-programmed reduction and in situ dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques. Our results clearly demonstrate that samples treated at lower temperatures, of smallest average crystallite size and highest specific surface areas, exhibit the best performance, while Gd2O3-doped ceria materials display higher reducibility than Sm2O3- and Y2O3-doped CeO2.

Abstract:Uniform Ce1−xZrxO2 (x=0.2–0.8) nanocrystals with ultra-small size were synthesized through a thermolysis process, facilitated by the initial formation of precursor (hydrated (Ce,Zr)-hydroxides) at low temperature. TEM, XRD, EDAX, and Raman spectra were employed to study the formation of the solid solutions with various Ce/Zr ratios. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectra showed that the ratios of Ce3+ to Ce4+ in both surface and bulk for the as-prepared Ce1−xZrxO2 nanocrystals increased with the zirconium content x. The well-distributed Zr and Ce in the hydrated (Ce,Zr)-hydroxides before their thermolysis became the crucial factor for the structural homogeneity of the products. In addition, this strategy was extended to the synthesis of Ce1−xGdxO1−x/2, Ce1−xSmxO1−x/2, and Ce1−xSnxO2 solid solutions. Catalytic measurements indicated that the ceria-based catalysts were active for CO oxidation at temperatures beyond 250°C and the sequence of catalytic activity was Ce0.5Zr0.5O2>Ce0.8Zr0.2O2>Ce0.2Zr0.8O2>Ce0.5Sm0.5O1.75.
Effect of Preparation Method on the Surface and Redox Properties of Ce0.67zr0.33o2 Mixed Oxides

Abstract:Four types of Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 (CZC, CZH, CZM and CZS) mixed oxides were prepared by the coprecipitation, hydrothermal, microemulsion and sol–gel methods, respectively, and were characterized by the XRD, BET, SEM and TPR analyses. It is found that TPR of CeO2ZrO2 depends on two main factors, phase homogeneity and textural properties. By enhancing the homogeneity of the Ce and Zr atoms in the mixed oxides with appreciate surface area, CZS shows the best low-temperature reducibility. After calcinations at 950°C for 20h, however, the greatly reduced surface area results in the disappearance of a reduction of surface Ce4+, and only one peak remains in the TPR profile of CZS, which is an intrinsic feature of bulk oxygen reduction and depends on the material. Meanwhile, the phase segregation strongly affects the hydrogen uptake behavior of CZC and CZH after aging. The favorable thermal stability in both structural and textural properties brings a promise of the application of a reverse microemulsion synthesis to prepare CeO2ZrO2 mixed oxides to meet the increasingly stringent requirement of service life of three-way catalysts.

Abstract:NO removal by CO model reaction was investigated over a series of ceria-containing solid solutions, prepared by an inverse co-precipitation method, to explore the relationship between the physicochemical properties and catalytic performances of these catalysts. The synthesized samples were studied in detail by means of XRD, Raman, TEM, UV-Vis spectroscopy, N2-physisorption, H2-TPR, OSC, XPS and in situ FT-IR technologies. These results indicate that the incorporation of Zr4+, Ti4+ and Sn4+ into the lattice of CeO2 leads to a smaller grain size and enhanced reduction behavior. Furthermore, the catalytic performance test shows that the activities and selectivities of these solid solutions are higher than pure CeO2 and that the Sn4+-doped sample shows the best results. The reason may be that: (1) the decrease in grain size results in an enlargement of the BET specific surface area and an increase of surface Ce3+. The former is conducive for sufficient contact between the catalyst and reactant molecules and the latter contributes to the adsorption of COx species; (2) the enhanced reduction behavior is beneficial in generating more surface oxygen vacancies during the reaction process, which can weaken the N–O bond to promote the dissociation of NOx effectively. Finally, in order to further understand the nature of the catalytic performances for these samples, a possible reaction mechanism is tentatively proposed.

Abstract:Understanding the complex chemistry of functional nanomaterials is of fundamental importance. Controlled synthesis and characterization at the atomic level is essential to gain deeper insight into the unique chemical reactivity exhibited by many nanomaterials. Cerium oxide nanoparticles have many industrial and commercial applications,resulting from very strong catalytic, pro-and anti-oxidant activity. However, the identity of the active species and the chemical mechanisms imparted by nanoceria remain elusive, impeding the further development of new applications. Here, we explore the behavior of cerium oxide nanoparticles of different sizes at different temperatures and trace the electronic structure changes by state-of-the-art soft and hard X-ray experiments combined with computational methods. We confirm the absence of the Ce(III) oxidation state at the surface of CeO2nanoparticles, even for particles as small as 2 nm. Synchrotron X-ray absorption experiments at Ce L3and M5edges, combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and theoretical calculations demonstrate that in addition to the nanoceria charge stability, the formation of hydroxyl groups at the surface profoundly affects the chemical performance of these nanomaterials

Abstract:CeO2-based nanostructures have recently aroused interest for various applications because of their higher OSC and redox properties, allowing them to facilely switch between the oxidation states of Ce4+ and Ce3+. There are many studies that have been focused on the morphology-dependent catalysis and identification of the true active sites during catalysis reactions. Probing the intrinsic properties of CeO2 nanostructures, including the surface structure and reduction, oxygen vacancy, grain boundary, morphology, and dynamic structure under environmental conditions, is essential in clarifying their physical and chemical properties and expanding their potential applications. In this review, we summarize recent significant achievements in characterizing CeO2 nanostructures and related catalytic phenomena through advanced techniques. Several studies using model CeO2 catalysts have been selected to show the importance of strong metal-support interactions. A deep insight into the active sites in morphologically controllable CeO2 that exposes the highly active facets is expected to guide the design of nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Although cerium oxide (CeO2) is widely used as a catalyst support, its limited defect sites should be improved. The incorporation of zirconium (Zr) in the cerium (Ce) lattice is shown to increase the number of oxygen vacancies and improve catalytic activity. Using a fixed surface density (SD) of copper (# of Cu atoms/nm2) as a surface species, the role of the support (CeyZr1-yO2 (y = 1.0, 0.9, 0.6, 0.5, and 0.0)) and defect site effects for CO oxidation reaction were investigated. The spectroscopic (e.g., Raman, XRD) and microscopic (e.g., SEM-EDX, TEM) characterization techniques were applied to evaluate the defect sites, crystallite size, lattice parameters, and chemical composition of catalysts. CO oxidation with varied CO:O2 ratios (1:5, 1:1, and 1:0.5 (stoichiometric)) was used as a model reaction to describe the relationship between the structure and catalytic performance of each catalyst. Based on the characterization results of CeyZr1-yO2 materials, the addition of Zr causes physical and chemical changes to the overall material. The inclusion of Zr into the structure of CeO2 decreased the overall lattice parameter of the catalyst and increased the number of defect sites, while CuOx/CeyZr1-yO2 displayed lower catalytic ability compared to a CuOx/CeO2 catalyst. It was concluded that defect sites of support material were not directly linked to the increased activity of CeyZr1-yO2 supported catalysts.

Enhanced Thermal Stability and Oxygen Storage Capacity for CexZr1-xO2 (x = 0.4−0.6) Solid Solutions by Hydrothermally Homogenous Doping of Trivalent Rare Earths

Abstract:Trivalent rare-earth (RE = La, Pr, Nd, Y)-doped CexZr1-xO2 (x = 0.4-0.6) solid solutions were synthesized via a urea hydrolysis-based hydrothermal method, followed by calcination at 1000 degrees C for 100 h. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) tests for the Cc LIII edge determine that the chemical valence of the Ce atom in either undoped or RE-doped CeO2-ZrO2 samples was mainly +4. The measurements of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) testify to the good compositional homogeneity for Ce, Zr, and RE atoms in both bulk and microdomain of the as-calcined CexZr1-x-yREyO2-z (x = 0.4-0.6, y = 0-0.16, and z is the number of oxygen vacancy) samples. The characterizations with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vis-Raman demonstrate the high structural homogeneity for ternary CeO2-ZrO2-RE2O3 solid solutions after calcination at 1000 degrees C for 100 h. The aliovalent substitution of the RE3+ ion for the Ce4+ or Zr4+ ion has been concluded to stabilize the pseudo cubic t"-structure, to improve the surface area and to enhance the oxygen storage capacity (OSC) for the binary CeO2-ZrO2 system. The reducibility of the as-calcined CexZr1-x-yREyO2-z, by CO seems dependent upon the nature and concentration of the RE dopant. The highest CO-OSC value obtained in this work appeared for Ce0.5Zr0.42Nd0.08O2-z in 558 mu mol CO g(-1) at 700 degrees C, while the undoped samples gave a value of less than 460 mu mol CO g(-1).
Cosmological solutions with nonlinear bulk viscosity

Abstract:A recently proposed nonlinear transport equation is used to model bulk viscous cosmologies that may be far from equilibrium, as happens during viscous fluid inflation or during reheating. The asymptotic stability of the de Sitter and Friedmann solutions is investigated. The former is stable for bulk viscosity index q 1. New solutions are obtained in the weakly nonlinear regime for q = 1. These solutions are singular and some of them represent a late-time inflationary era.

Abstract:We have investigated the geometric and electronic structures of the cerium oxide (CeO2)–titanium dioxide (TiO2) mixed oxides with various Ce/TiO2 weight ratios prepared by the sol–gel method in detail by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy excited by 325 and 514.5nm lasers, and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Existence of cerium effectively inhibits the phase transition of TiO2 from the anatase phase to the rutile phase. XRD peaks of TiO2 anatase attenuate continuously with the increasing amount of CeO2 in the mixed oxide, but the XRD peaks of cubic CeO2 appear only after the weight ratio of Ce/TiO2 reaches 0.50. The average crystalline sizes of TiO2 anatase and cubic CeO2 in CeO2–TiO2 mixed oxides are smaller than those in the corresponding individual TiO2 anatase and cubic CeO2. Raman spectroscopy excited by the 514.5nm laser detects CeO2 after the weight ratio of Ce/TiO2 reaches 0.70 whereas Raman spectroscopy excited by the 325nm laser detects CeO2 after the weight ratio of Ce/TiO2 reaches 0.90. XPS results demonstrate that Ti exists in the form of Ti4+ in the CeO2–TiO2 mixed oxide. Ce is completely in the form of Ce3+ in the mixed oxides with a 0.05 weight ratio of Ce/TiO2. With the increasing weight ratio of Ce/TiO2, Ce4+ dominates. On basis of these results, we proposed that CeO2 initially nucleates at the defects (oxygen vacancies) within TiO2 anatase, forming an interface bridged with oxygen between CeO2 and TiO2 anatase. At the interface, Ce species cannot substitute Ti4+ in the lattice of TiO2 anatase whereas Ti4+ can substitute Ce4+ in the lattice of cubic CeO2. The decreasing concentration of oxygen vacancies, the Ti–O–Ce interface, and the decreasing average crystalline size of TiO2 anatase act to inhibit the phase transformation of TiO2 anatase. With the increasing amounts of CeO2, the CeO2 clusters continuously grow and form cubic CeO2 nanocrystals. Spectroscopic results strongly demonstrate that the surface region of CeO2–TiO2 mixed oxide is enriched with TiO2.
Structural studies of mesoporous ZrO$_{2}$-CeO$_{2}$ and ZrO$_{2}$-CeO$_{2}$/SiO$_{2}$ mixed oxides for catalytical applications

Abstract:In this work the synthesis of ZrO$_{2}$-CeO$_{2}$ and ZrO$_{2}$-CeO$_{2}$/SiO$_{2}$ were developed, based on the process to form ordered mesoporous materials such as SBA-15 silica. The triblock copolymer Pluronic P-123 was used as template, aiming to obtain crystalline single phase walls and larger specific surface area, for future applications in catalysis. SAXS and XRD results showed a relationship between ordered pores and the material crystallization. 90% of CeO$_{2}$ leaded to single phase homogeneous ceria-zirconia solid solution of cubic fluorite structure (Fm$\bar{3}$m). The SiO$_{2}$ addition improved structural and textural properties as well as the reduction behavior at lower temperatures, investigated by XANES measurements under H$_{2}$ atmosphere.
Atomistic origin of high-concentration Ce3+ in {100}-faceted Cr-substituted CeO2 nanocrystals

Abstract:Improving the potential of promising CeO2-based nanocatalysts in practical applications requires an atomic-scale analysis of the effects of active dopants on the distribution of Ce valence states and the formation of oxygen vacancies (V Os). In this study, a Cr dopant is introduced into the cubic {100}-faceted CeO2 nanocrystals (NCs) with an average size of 7.8 nm via supercritical water. The Cr dopants substitute Ce sites in the amount of approximately 3 mol%. Based on the aberration-corrected STEM-EELS, the effects of Cr dopant on the distribution of cerium valence states are investigated layer by layer across the ultrafine Cr-substituted CeO2 NC perpendicular to the {100} exposed facet. It is found that an increased amount of Ce3+ cations is present in Cr-substituted CeO2 NCs, particularly in the internal atomic layers, compared to the pristine CeO2 NCs. The atomic-scale analysis of the local structure combined with theoretical calculations demonstrates that Cr dopant reduces the formation energy of V Os and increases the mobility of oxygen atoms for the nano-sized CeO2. These effects, in principle, result in an improved oxygen storage capacity and provide a fundamental understanding of role of the dopant in the formation and distribution of V Os in the doped CeO2 NCs.

Abstract:MnOx-CeO2 catalysts have shown great potential as selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR) at temperature below 300 °C. While the improved catalytic activity due to the synergy between MnOx and CeO2 in MnOx-CeO2 catalysts is widely acknowledged, the synergistic mechanism in NH3-SCR reaction remains elusive due to the lack of direct evidences. In this study, we report a comprehensive study of how MnOx and CeO2 interacted during NH3-SCR in two designed MnOx-CeO2 catalysts with different Ce4+ concentration through both experimental and theoretical approaches. Our results reveal that electron transfer from Mn2+ to Ce4+ induced the formation of surface oxygen vacancy on the CeO2, leading to the synergistic promotion of low-temperature catalytic performance by establishing Mn-redox and Ce-redox cycles to activate NH3 and O2, respectively. This work provides a distinct mechanism diagram of the synergy between MnOx and CeO2, which sheds light on the rational design of low-temperature NH3-SCR catalysts.
