Abstract:Based on the theory of scalar diffraction, an error model is established to investigate the effect of alignment error on the efficiency of binary optics elements. Simple formulas of the relationship between alignment error and diffraction efficiency are obtained. Theoretical results are in good agreement with simulation results.

Abstract:An effective computer aided alignment (CAA) scheme based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of sensitivity matrix is used in the alignment of a set of 20X Schwarzschild projection optics. Alignment simulation is conducted by ray tracing software CODE V to verify the convergence of CAA method within the calculated tolerance limit. The result shows that, with the misalignment value calculated by CAA, fine alignment could be achieved after only one adjustment step. Alignment experiment is also performed according to the CAA scheme. After fine alignment, the measured wavefront error (WFE) is 18nm in rms, which is consistent with the CODE V simulation result in ideal alignment status.

Abstract:The distribution of base mode Gaussian beam′s electric field through LiNbO3 deflector is calculated based on the beam refraction theory in the media interface and the vectorial theory of propagation in anisotropic media.The model of the intermediate frequency current, from the detector of beam orienting system, versus beam mismatched angle is rebuilt.The computer simulation results demonstrate the effect of output electric field change on the intermediate frequency current as a function of mismatched angle.High beam orienting precision can be obtained based on the revised mathematical model.

Abstract:Since the performance of binary optical element (BOE) is affected vastly by etching depth error, mask misalignment and feature rounding introduced by the fabrication process, it becomes important to analyze the effects of fabrication errors on the BOE. The phase pattern of binary optical lens will not be symmetrical when the misalignment error exists, and it is very complicate to analyze the diffraction efficiency. Based on the relationship between the diffraction efficiency and the modulation transfer function (MTF), the MTF of a binary optical lens with different fabrication errors is calculated, and the effects on diffraction efficiency are also obtained.

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed analysis on the influence of misalignment errors of optical components in an orthogonal two-axis Lloyd's mirror interferometer, which can fabricate two-dimensional grating structures in a single exposure. In an ideal condition, defect-free two-dimensional grating structures can be fabricated by the interferometer. However, in a real case, visible stripes caused by misalignment errors of the optical components in the interferometer always appear on the fabricated grating structures. In this paper, theoretical analysis and experiments are carried out to analyze the influences of the misalignment errors of the optical components in the orthogonal two-axis Lloyd's mirror interferometer.
Optimization of Transverse Translation Diverse Phase Retrieval for Optical Elements with Mid-Spatial Frequency Errors

Abstract:During the fabricating procedure of optical elements, computer-controlled tools will introduce some periodic structured errors, named mid-spatial frequency errors, which may scatter the laser beams, create filamentous spots or even damage the optical components in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) high power laser system. Transverse translation diverse phase retrieval (TTDPR) is an ingenious phase retrieval method for measuring aspheric and freeform surfaces. In this paper, we explore the measurement of optical elements with mid-spatial frequency errors by using TTDPR. First, we briefly introduce the features of mid-spatial frequency errors and establish the relation between mid-spatial frequency errors and diffraction pattern. Second, with the knowledge of the mid-spatial frequency error, we analyze the feasibility of optical elements with mid-spatial frequency error measurement by using TTDPR. In order to improve the convergence and measurement accuracy of phase retrieval algorithm, initial inputs are optimized for the following iterative phase retrieval algorithm. Results indicate that a 50% higher reconstruction accuracy can be achieved, when the initial input is the ideal lens to recover the phase of lens with mid-spatial frequency errors. For TTDPR, sub-aperture illuminated with overlapping part among adjacent sub-apertures will improve accuracy of iterative phase algorithm than never overlapped sub-aperture, while it encumbers the efficiency of iterative phase retrieval algorithm. Based on the characteristics of the particular optical surfaces, the influence of major parameter of sub-aperture including the size of sub-aperture and the overlapped proportion among adjacent sub-aperture to accuracy and efficiency of TTDPR are also discussed.

Abstract:By expanding the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, approximate analytical expressions of Wigner distribution function for fundamental mode Gaussian beam through an apertured and misaligned ABCD optical system are derived. Compared with the aligned case, results show that the misaligned optical system will introduce in the output Wigner distribution function a coordinate shift in space-frequency plane. To examine the analytical results, some numerical simulations are carried out and the absolute errors between analytical results and numerical integral ones are presented. It is shown that the approximate analytical results are proper and ascendant.

Abstract:In this paper, the synthetical analyses on the derivation of alignment in the application of the polarization optical technique are presented upon the main error sources of this technique. Consequently, a novel alignment system is developed to improve the alignment technique, which is composed of a combination of two parallel polarizers, bidirectional-double path, two detectors, and electrical signa processor. Using this system, we have realized accurate alignments between PM fibers and their in-line devices.

Abstract:The calculation method for light emission efficiency splits external quantum efficiency (EQE) into internal quantum efficiency (IQE) and light extraction efficiency (LEE) independently. Consequently, the IQE connected to Purcell factor and the LEE are calculated separately. This traditional method ignores the interplays between the Purcell factor and transmittance coefficient in spectral domain, which all strongly depend on emitting directions. In this work, we propose a new figure of merit to describe the light emission process accurately by using the direction-dependent Purcell factor and transmittance coefficient simultaneously. We use a specific LED structure as a numerical example to illustrate the calculation method and optimization procedure.

Abstract:Vectorial optical fields have garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in areas such as optical nano-fabrication, optical micromachining, quantum information processing, optical imaging, and so on. Traditional compact vectorial optical generators with amplitude modulation perform poorly in terms of diffraction effect reduction. To tackle this problem, the refractive 4f system in amplitude modulation is longitudinally aligned using an optimization approach presented in this research. The phase images used for longitudinal alignment are loaded into the liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM), and the distance between the lens and the mirror in the reflective 4f system is adjusted for longitudinal alignment by compensating for the neglected phase in the integrated module for the compact vectorial optical-field generator. The spot images collected by the CCD are processed using the improved eight-direction Sobel operator and Roberts function, and the longitudinal alignment in the reflective 4f system is determined by the sharpness of the image. The sharpness of the edges of the lines and the overall image are both enhanced after optimization compared to before optimization. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively reduce the longitudinal alignment error of the reflective 4f system in the amplitude modulation of the compact vectorial optical-field generator, lessen the diffraction effect, and improve the performance of the system.

Abstract:Binary optical elements have been developed well over the past few years. This article gives the results of studies on the application of binary optical elements in four-channel two-frequency interferometer. To correct mechanical errors of measurement in real-time, a beam-splitter is needed to split laser beams to measure different parameters. In this interferometer, binary optical elements are employed as a beam-splitter and deflector instead of prisms. The volume and weight of the interferometer are reduced a lot by using them. These elements are easy to regulate and work well. The piece of glass is a 2D Dammanm grating, which split the original beam into four beams with equal intensity. Another glass plate with four gratings is used as deflector to make these beams to run parallel to each other. The parallelism of split beams is less than 15 arc seconds. In the experiment, no observable phenomenon of depolarization was found. It means that binary optical elements can be employed in two-frequency interferometer. The main disadvantage of binary optical elements is its low diffraction efficiency. When the beam pass through binary optical elements, about eighty percent of its amplitude is lost.

Abstract:In this letter, we have modeled and analyzed the impact of alignment errors in fiber lasers and collimating lens arrays on incoherent beam combination systems. The combined intensity expression is calculated considering different errors, and efficiency comparisons are made between 7 and 61 laser beam arrays. The results show that the misalignment error also increases with an increase in the number of beam arrays, leading to a decrease in the combination efficiency. We observed that to achieve more than 80% combination efficiency, maximum error tolerances should be , , and for displacement, focal and tilt errors, respectively. The findings presented in this letter have practical relevance for enhancing the design, operation, and optimization of beam combination systems.

Abstract:The ripple errors of the lens lead to optical damage in high energy laser system. The analysis of sidelobe on the focal plane, caused by ripple error, provides a reference to evaluate the error and the imaging quality. In this paper, we analyze the diffraction characteristics of sidelobe of optical elements with ripple errors. First, we analyze the characteristics of ripple error and build relationship between ripple error and sidelobe. The sidelobe results from the diffraction of ripple errors. The ripple error tends to be periodic due to fabrication method on the optical surface. The simulated experiments are carried out based on angular spectrum method by characterizing ripple error as rotationally symmetric periodic structures. The influence of two major parameter of ripple including spatial frequency and peak-to-valley value to sidelobe is discussed. The results indicate that spatial frequency and peak-to-valley value both impact sidelobe at the image plane. The peak-to-valley value is the major factor to affect the energy proportion of the sidelobe. The spatial frequency is the major factor to affect the distribution of the sidelobe at the image plane.

Abstract:Summary In the present paper, a diffraction integral formula for a misaligned optical system is derived. The interference effects of opticalelement arrays are studied by means of such a formula. The possibility of eliminating interference fringes is discussed. The conclusion is that the interference fringes could be eliminated when the αβγδ condition for arrays is satisfied. The synthetical aberration is simultaneously eliminated. However, in this case, the synthetical image coincides with the individual images. For some special application, the synthetical image does not coincide with the individual images and the αβγδ condition is not fulfilled. But the interference fringes may disappear in some special cases.

Abstract:Along with more broad application fields of the high-resolution optical system, the high-precision assembling requirement of optical components, as same as the high-precision design requirement, has become the decisive element of the optical system resolution. Because the current Gauss optical correction method only considers the alignment of object-image location, and cannot actually meets the requirement of optical system adjustment, the alignment theory of optical instruments needs to be developed synchronously. The influence of aberration on misalignment of optical system was considered fully, a correction method for transmission-type misalignment optical system was proposed based on aberration theory. The variation regularity of single lens aberration caused by axial displacement was analyzed, and the aberration effect coefficients were defined. On this basis, through calculating the size of lens adjustment induced by the image position error and the magnifying rate error, the misalignment correction formula based on the constraints of the aberration was deduced mathematically. Taking the three lens collimation system for an example, the simulation was carried out to validate this method. It comes to the following conclusion: by introducing the aberration constraint theory into the correction method, the final correction result meets both the requirement of Gauss optical characteristic and the minimum aberration increase.

Abstract:On the basis of the generalized diffraction integral formula for misaligned optical systems in the spatial domain, an analytical propagation expression for the elements of the cross-spectral density matrix of a random electromagnetic beam passing through a misaligned optical system is derived. Some analyses are illustrated by numerical examples relating to changes in the spectral degree of polarization and in the spectral degree of coherence of an electromagnetic Gaussian-Schell-model beam propagating through such an optical system. We find that the degree of polarization in the neighboring areas of the focal plane is oscillating, and the effect of misalignment on coherence is not so evident as that on polarization. Abstract:ABSTRACT The optical systems with large collecting aperture and high resolution are the future development directions of optical systems on orbit. Once on orbit, it needs to correct the misalignment errors in optical system introduced by the effect of various factors. For the purpose of decreasing the complex degree of alignment on orbit and increasing the reliability, the nonlinear function mathematical model between primary mirror misalignments and Zernike coefficients was established. Then a certain simulated off-axis three-mirror system was corrected, the result indicated that the wavefront RMS reduced to 0.02λ. It satisfied the demands of alignment on orbit.
