Abstract:The most important aluminum resistant mechanism for a variety of plant species relies on alumi-num-induced secretion of organic acids from root apex, the major target of Al toxicity. The recent progresses to understand the regulation processes leading to the ultimate secretion of organic acids, including transporters of organic acids, upstream sequence regulators of transporter gene, gene copy number, transcription factors, re-versible protein phosphorylation, synthesis of organic acids and energy metabolism are summarized in this re-view and the prospects in this ifeld are also proposed.

Abstract:Aluminum (Al) is the most abundant metal on earth and is solubilized to toxic level as the free Al~(3+) under acidic conditions. It is a serious environmental toxicant and is inimical to biota, which has been testified in many model organisms. In recent years, biologists have become more aware of the importance of the mechanisms of Al-toxicity and Al-tolerance in environmental and life sciences. In this paper, we reviewed four mechanisms of Al toxicity and tolerance in microorganisms, including (1) excreting organic acids to chelate Al~(3+), (2) overexpressing Mg~(2+) transporter protein to transport Mg~(2+) into the cell, (3) segregating Al~(3+) in vacuole by F-1F-0-ATPase and V-ATPase to eliminate the toxicity of Al~(3+) and (4) regulating the oxidative stress to modify the Al toxicity and tolerance mechanism in microorganisms.

Abstract:Aluminium toxicity is the major factor limiting crop growth on acid soils, which greatly affects the crop productivity on about 40% cultivated soils of the world and 21% of China. In the past decades, a lot of researches on aluminium toxicity and resistant mechanisms have been doing, and great progress was achieved. This paper dealt with the genetic differences in aluminium tolerance among plants, screening and selecting methods and technologies for identifying aluminium resistance in plants, and physiological and molecular mechanism resistance to aluminium toxicity. Some aspects needed to be further studied were also briefly discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, aqueous-chemical characteristics, bio-toxicity and related criterions of aluminum were presented. Aluminum disposition and distribution in water supplying system was summarized based on previous researches. Concentration variation characteristic of aluminum, transformation laws between different aluminum forms and their affecting factors were discussed. Finally, feasibility suggestions were proposed to reduce aluminum concentration in water supplying system. In the future, fundamental research on the factors affecting aluminum dissolve-sediment equilibrium and the effect of aluminum on water quality should be strengthened.

Abstract:Aluminum toxicity in acidic soil is a serious problem worldwide,which results in poor quality and big loss of wheat production.Therefore,studies on the molecular mechanism of Aluminum tolerence has become one of the important tasks in wheat stress resistance research.In this study,hexaploid wheats Al-sensitive cultivar Scout 66 and Al-tolerant cultivar Atlas 66 were chosen as the controls,the process of Aluminum accumulation and the characterizations of organic acid secretion from roots in elite wheat cultivars Emai 12,Emai 18,Xiaoyan 6,Shannong 1355 were analyzed under different concentrations of Aluminum ion stress.The results showed that the four elite wheat cultivars tested are all Aluminum-sensitive genotypes and could be used as the important testing system for exploring molecular mechanism of wheat Aluminum sensitivity.Among these genotypes,Emai 12 and Xiaoyan 6 showed strong sesitivity to Aluminum stress when the Aluminum ion concentration is over 100 μmol/L,while the Emai 18 and Shannong 1355 showed strong sensitivity to Aluminum stress when the Aluminum ion concentration is over 150 μmol/L.While the secretion of organic acids were not detected in these four elite wheat cultivars and the Al-sensitive cultivar Scout 66,and the secretion of malic acid from root of Al-tolerant cultivar Atlas 66 was detected under Aluminum stress.It is considered that secretion of organic acids from roots was an important mechanism for plants under aluminium stress.

Abstract:The effects that pH of simulated acid rain on corrosion behavior of LY12 aluminum alloy was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectrum and polarization curves.It was found that corrosion potential shifts to less noble value with increasing pH at the lower 3.1 and shifts to more noble value at the higher 3.4.In the solutions with pH≤3.4,the surface film of LY12 aluminum alloy was dissolved and the thickness of surface film and film resistance decreased with immersion time,thus corrosion rate of LY12 aluminum alloy increased.In the solutions with pH≥3.8,the film thickness of LY12 aluminum alloy had no apparent change with immersion time,the film resistance increased with immersion time,and thus corrosion rate decreased.The results was discussed from surface film of LY12 aluminum alloy,adsorption of anions and corrosion products.

Abstract:Potential noise records have been collected for 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, which was exposed to simulated acid rain with different pH value for 15 wet–dry cycles. Meanwhile, Potentiodynamic polarization and SEM techniques were also used as assistant measurements. Three mathematic methods including average, standard deviation and wavelet transformation have been employed to analyze the records. The results showed that each single wet–dry cycle can be divided into three regions with respect to the change of the cathodic reaction rate, and with the increase of pH value the main cathodic reaction changes from the reduction of protons to that of oxygen molecules. The analysis of the EDP versus time evolution clearly indicates that the whole corrosion process can be divided into three segments for the case of pH 3.5 and only one for the cases of pH 4.5 and 6.0, which have been theoretically interpreted according to the corrosion theory and experimentally proved by SEM. The results also showed that the corrosion in the case of pH 3.5 was much more rigorous than that in the cases of pH 4.5 and 6.0. It may due to synergistic effects of that, the characteristic of hydrogen ions which is much more active than that of oxygen molecules, the high diffusion/migration rate of hydrogen ions in solution or through surface films and the lower stability of surface passive film at low pH value system.

Meanwhile, the utilization of coagulants, additives and aluminumware may increase the possibility of human being's exposure to aluminum. With the profound researches on the environmental geochemistry and biological toxicology of aluminum, the publics concentrate their attentions more and more on its ecological effect. Based on latest literatures, this paper discusses the recent advance on the study of bio-availability of various chemical forms of aluminum and their toxicology, and the focus and tendency of this research in future are put forward.

Abstract:Rainwater chemistry plays an important role in the earth-surficial ecosystem, but studies on rainwater chemical composition of karst agro-ecosystem are rare. To explore the rainwater alkalization and the provenance of components responsible for neutralization, two-years chemical monitoring of rainwater was carried out in a karst agricultural catchment in Southwest China. The main findings suggest that SO42−, NO3−, Ca2+, and NH4+ are the principal ions. All the ionic contents show distinctly seasonal variation (highest in winter) in response to variations in seasonal precipitation because the rain-scour process can efficiently remove atmospheric materials. Source identification indicates that Cl− and Na+ are mainly derived from marine input whereas SO42− and NO3− are controlled by anthropogenic emission, in particular, fixed emission sources. The source of NH4+ is attributed to intense agricultural production, while Ca2+ and Mg2+ are mainly derived from calcite dissolution. The rainwater alkalization caused by the seasonal acid neutralization (via basic components, Ca2+ and NH4+) is beneficial to crop growth but also reflect agricultural overfertilization. Sulfur controlled the total wet acid deposition (68%–94%) and could be a potential agent of weathering.

Abstract:As the ongoing global research on acid precipitation is developing in depth, more and more attention has been paid to the ecological effects of aluminum (Al) due to its toxicity to plants and animals, which is caused by acid precipitation. As a very serious problem of terrestrial and aquatic environmental acidification occurs in China, especially in southwestern China, a systematic investigation of Al speciation in these regions is very important. In this paper, the Al speciation results of surface waters in China are reported and its ecological impacts is evaluated. More than 100 water samples were collected from about twenty provinces of China. Driscoll's Al speciation scheme combined with the modified MINQEL computer model is used for speciation of Al. This study shows that the ecological impacts of acidification are quite different between China and Western countries, because of different geographical environments and geological settings. In Western countries, acidification is mainly caused by NO2-. Due to low concentrations of K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, the buffer capacities of soil and water are weak. Therefore, natural waters can be acidified to pH<5 very easily, resulting in a considerable mobilization of Al and worsening of the ecological environment. In China, acid precipitation is mainly in the form of sulfuric acid. In northwestern China, concentrations of K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+ are high in soil and surface waters. This leads to much higher capacity and a high resistance ability to acidification. The pH values of waters in this region are high (around 7) and no serious Al toxicity is found at present. However, in northeastern and southeastern China, the soil is rich in Al (unsaturated aluminosilicates in northeastern China, saturated aluminosilicates in north and central China, aluminum-rich soil in southeastern and southwestern China). The concentrations of K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+ in soil and waters are lower than those of northwestern China. Therefore the buffer capacity is limited. Numerous surface waters have already been acidified and pH values declined to 5. The impacts of Al toxicity on ecological systems in these regions are very serious, especially in Jiangxi, Hubei Provinces and Chongqing Municipality.

Abstract:Aluminum(Al)toxicity has been widely considered to be the most important growth-limiting factor for plants in strongly acid soils(pH 5.0). Toxic Al ions around root systems may affect the capacity for mineral nutrient acquisition and increase the risk of Al stress for plant species. Al-induced exudation of organic acids, biological enzymes and other compounds from roots is specific to Al tolerance in some plant species. Three principal mechanisms(external, internal and genic)of plants for adaptation to tolerant and avoid soil Al toxicity are introduced in this review. Finally, the trends for the future development in this field are prospected.

Abstract:The effects of pH value of simulated rainwater and rain intensity on corrosion and runoff behavior of A3 steel were studied with a simulating raining system designed and made by ourselves, while the variation of corrosion rate was monitored by ACM. The results show that corrosion rate of A3 steel decreases with pH value of simulated rain increasing. The variation of corrosion rate with pH of simulated rain monitored by ACM is same as the result of that determined by weight loss method, which shows that ACM is practicable to monitor corrosion rate during raining in some way. The runoff quantity of A3 steel decreases and then increases with pH value of simulated rain increasing, which was explained from change of corrosion product. The corrosion rate and runoff quantity of A3 steel increase with intensity of simulated rain increasing. When the rain quantity was same, the runoff quantity increases with intensity increasing, which shows the strike of rain on the surface of A3 steel having an evident influence on its corrosion and runoff behavior.

Abstract:The variations of corrosion potential, electrochemical impedance and surface morphology of LY12 alumi-num alloy with pH of simulated acidic rain solutions were investigated with EIS and SEM. It is found that corrosionpotential shifts to less noble value with increasing pH in the solutions of pH lower than 3.1 and shifts to more noblevalue in the solutions of pH higher than 3.1. In the solutions of pH lower than 3.1,the electrochemical impedancediagram has a capacitive loop at higher frequency and an inductive loop at lower frequency and the magnitude of highfrequency loop decreases with decreasing pH and increasing period of immersion. However, in the solutions of pHhigher than 3.4 two capacitive loops appear and the magnitude of high frequency loops increases with pH and periodof immersion. Observation of SEM shows that the pitting intensity increases with decreasing pH in the range ofpH2.0～3.4, no evident pits are observed at pH higher than 3.4. The experiment results were discussed from re-sistance of oxide film and adsorption processes of anions in simulated acid rain solution.
Effects of Fulvic Acid and Humic Acid on Aluminum Speciation in Drinking Water.

Abstract:This article focused on the influences of fulvic acid and humic acid on aluminum speciation in drinking water. Factors including the concentration of residual chlorine and pH value had been concerned. Aluminum species investigated in the experiments included inorganic mononuclear, organic mononuclear, mononuclear, polymer, soluble, and suspended forms. It was found that the effects of fulvic acid and humic acid on aluminum speciation depended mainly on their molecular weight. Fulvic acid with molecular weight less than 5000 Dalton had little influence on aluminum speciation; while fulvic acid with molecular weight larger than 5000 Dalton and humic acid would increase the concentration of soluble aluminum significantly even at concentration below 0.5 mg/L (calculated as TOC). Aluminum species, in the present of fulvic acid with molecular weight larger than 5000 Dalton and humic acid, were more stable than that in the present of fluvic acid with molecular mass less than 5000 Dalton, and varied little with reaction time. Within pH range 6.5-7.5, soluble aluminum increased notably in water with organic matter. As the concentration of residual chlorine increased, the effects of fulvic acid and humic acid became weak. The reactions between humic acid, fulvic acid with large molecular weight, and aluminum were considered to be a multi-dentate coordination process. With the consideration of aluminum bioavailability, reducing the concentration of fulvic acid and humic acid and keeping the pH value among 6.5-7.5 were recommended during drinking water treatment.

Abstract:Phytotoxicity of aluminum ion (Al 3+ ) is a serious problem limiting crop production in acidic soils. Organic acids with Al_chelating ability play an important role in the detoxification of Al both externally and internally. Aluminum is detoxified externally by the secretion of organic acids such as citric, oxalic, and /or malic acid from the roots. The secretion of organic acids is highly specific to Al and the site of secretion is localized to the root apex. The kinds of organic acids secreted as well as secretion patterns differ among plant species. Internal detoxification of Al_accumulating plants is achieved by the formation of Al_organic acid complex. For instance, the complex of Al_citric(1:1)in hydrangea and Al_oxalate(1:3) in buckwheat has been identified. In the paper the role of organic acid in detoxification of aluminum in higher plants and its mechanisms are reviewed.
The important role of surface hydroxyl groups in aluminum activation during phyllosilicate mineral acidification

Abstract:Phyllosilicate minerals are the important components in soils and an important source of activated aluminum (Al) during soil acidification. However, the mechanisms for Al activation in phyllosilicate minerals were not understood well. In this paper, the effect of phyllosilicate surface hydroxyl groups on Al activation during acidification was studied after the minerals were modified with inorganic and organic materials. After modification of kaolinite, montmorillonite, and illite with fulvic acid (FA-), iron oxide (Fe-), Fe combined with FA (Fe-FA-), and siloxane (Si-O-), the interlayer spaces were altered. For instance, when modified with Fe, Fe entered the interlayer spaces of kaolinite and montmorillonite and changed the interlayer spaces of both minerals but did not affect that of illite. Also, the other modification methods had significant effects on the interlayer space of montmorillonite but not on kaolinite and illite. It was observed that all the modification strategies inhibited Al activation during acidification by reducing the number of hydroxyl groups on the mineral surfaces and inhibiting protonation reactions between H+ and hydroxyl groups. Nevertheless, the inhibition effect varies with the type of phyllosilicate mineral. For kaolinite (Kao), the inhibition effect of the different modification methods on Al activation during acidification followed: Fe-FA-Kao > Fe-Kao > Si-O-Kao > FA-Kao. Additionally, for montmorillonite (Mon), the inhibition effect was in the order: Si-O-Mon > Fe-Mon > Fe-FA-Mon > FA-Mon, while for illite, it was: Fe-illite > Si-O-illite ≈ Fe-FA-illite > FA-illite. Thus, the hydroxyl groups on the surfaces and edges of phyllosilicate minerals play an important role in the activation of Al from the mineral structure. Also, the protonation of hydroxyl groups may be the first step during Al activation in these minerals. The results of this study can serve as a reference for the development of new technologies to inhibit soil acidification and Al activation.
