Abstract:Objective To evaluate the corrosion behavior of Ni-Cr alloy with electroplated Au film in artificial saliva with different pH, compared with Ni-Cr alloy and Au alloy. Methods The electrochemical corrosion behavior of Ni-Cr alloy with electroplated Au film was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization curve in artificial saliva(pH5.0, 6.8, respectively) to determine the corrosion potentia(lEcor)r, self-corrosion current density(Icor)r and polarization resistance(Rp), as compared with Ni-Cr alloy and Au alloy. Microstructure and phase diffraction was examined by field scanning electron microscope(FSEM). Results The Icorr of three alloys in acid artificial saliva (pH5.0)was significantly higher than that in neutral artificial saliva(pH6.8). Meanwhile, the Rp in acid artificial saliva(pH5.0) was lower than that in neutral artificial saliva(pH6.8). The results of FSEM showed that the range of corrosion widened in acid artificial saliva on the surface of Ni -Cr alloy coating Au. Conclusion In acid medium, the corrosion resistance of three kinds of alloys decrease to a certain extent.

Abstract:A practical application of Driscoll's equation for predicting the acid-neutralizing capacity (ANC) in acidic waters equilibria with the mineral phase gibbsite is reported in this paper. Theoretical predication values of ANC are compared with the experimental data obtained from different literatures. The effect of aluminum (Al) on the value of ANC is investigated. It indicates that Al plays an important role in regulating the buffering effects in acidic natural waters. Failure to consider Al in acidic waters may bias assessment results in certain situations so as to overestimate the ANC values in response to increase in atmospheric deposition.

Abstract:Tailing ponds are major sources of heavy metal pollution. Previous studies primarily focused on tailings with high sulfur content, with limited attention to low-sulfur tailings. This study explored the release behavior of Pb, Zn, and Cd from low-sulfur tailings under simulated acid rain conditions, considering factors such as pH, particle size, and weathering degree. Samples were collected from a lead–zinc tailing pond in the karst regions of northern Guangxi, China. Batch leaching experiments indicated that even with high acid neutralization capacity (ANC = 166.57–167.45 kg H2SO4/t), substantial heavy metal leaching occurred under acidic conditions (pH 2–3), with Pb, Zn, and Cd concentrations increasing 4–6 times compared to neutral conditions. Leachate concentrations were slightly higher in coarser particles than in finer ones, while weathering further enhanced metal release, particularly for Cd. These findings suggest that acid neutralization alone may not be sufficient to prevent heavy metal leaching in low-sulfur tailings exposed to acid rain. However, due to the laboratory scale of this study, further validation through field-scale or mesocosm experiments is necessary to confirm the observed trends and assess their implications for environmental risk management in karst regions.

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3-) pollution in aquatic system is a worldwide problem. The temporal distribution pattern and sources of nitrate are of great concern for water quality. The nitrogen (N) cycling processes in a subtropical watershed located in Changxing County, Zhejiang Province, China were greatly influenced by the temporal variations of precipitation and temperature during the study period (September 2011 to July 2012). The highest NO3- concentration in water was in May (wet season, mean±SD=17.45±9.50 mg L(-1)) and the lowest concentration occurred in December (dry season, mean±SD=10.54±6.28 mg L(-1)). Nevertheless, no water sample in the study area exceeds the WHO drinking water limit of 50 mg L(-1) NO3-. Four sources of NO3(-) (atmospheric deposition, AD; soil N, SN; synthetic fertilizer, SF; manure & sewage, M&S) were identified using both hydrochemical characteristics [Cl-, NO3-, HCO3-, SO42-, Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Na+, dissolved oxygen (DO)] and dual isotope approach (δ15N-NO3- and δ(18)O-NO3-). Both chemical and isotopic characteristics indicated that denitrification was not the main N cycling process in the study area. Using a Bayesian model (stable isotope analysis in R, SIAR), the contribution of each source was apportioned. Source apportionment results showed that source contributions differed significantly between the dry and wet season, AD and M&S contributed more in December than in May. In contrast, SN and SF contributed more NO3- to water in May than that in December. M&S and SF were the major contributors in December and May, respectively. Moreover, the shortcomings and uncertainties of SIAR were discussed to provide implications for future works. With the assessment of temporal variation and sources of NO3-, better agricultural management practices and sewage disposal programs can be implemented to sustain water quality in subtropical watersheds.
Effect of simulated acid deposition on chemistry of surface runoff in monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest in Dinghushan

Abstract:The effects of simulated acid deposition on chemical properties of surface runoff were studied in a monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest in Dinghushan Nature Reserve.Four gradients of simulated acid rain treatments with three replications were designed: control(natural lake water,pH 4.5±0.3),pH 4.0,pH 3.5 and pH 3.0.The surface runoff pH,nitric acid(NO-3),sulfuric acid(SO2-4),bicarbonate(HCO-3),base cations(K+,Na+,Ca2+,Mg2+) and dissolved organic carbon(DOC) were detected from October 2011 to March 2012.The result showed that the surface runoff pH was not significantly different among treatments,which exhibited "U" patterns with increasing acid intensity.This suggested the pH was unlikely to decline in a short time.The NO-3 and SO2-4 concentrations increased with acid increment,while HCO-3 exhibited the same pattern as the surface runoff pH.According to the correlation between acid ions concentrations and the surface runoff pH,we found that SO2-4 and HCO-3 promoted the ability of anti-acidification,while NO-3 was adverse.Base cations responded differently to simulated acid treatments.Ca2+ and Na+ were very sensitive to acid deposition,and their concentrations at pH 3.0 treatment were significantly higher than at other acid treatments.Mg2+ concentration increased with the simulated acid intensity,however,there were not significant differences among different acid treatments.K+,however,was not sensitive to acid treatment.These results indicated that pH 3.0 treatment led to the loss of Na+,Ca2+ and Mg2+ from the soil.In addition,acid treatments tended to cause dissolved organic carbon(DOC) loss,increasing the risk of organic contamination in the surface runoff.

Abstract:A theoretical computation approach and a classification method of two-reference-states for the acidification capacity of natural waters are developed after its definition, determination procedure and classification methods are demonstrated. In the theoretical computation of acidification capacity, the alkalinity, pH, chemical oxygen demand and Al(III) components of waters are chosen as the original parameters. The contribution of carbonate, dissolved organic matter, and soluble aluminum to the acidification capacity is, respectively, emphasized. On the basis of theory of aquatic chemistry and the aquatic status of Southwest Area of China, the calibration value of methyl orange alkalinity to TIP alkalinity is calculated as 49 mu M. The CaCO3 water system which balances with CO2 in the atmosphere, and the water system which holds the critical pH and balances with CO2 in the atmosphere are considered as the reference state of the waters difficult to acidification and the critical state of acidified water. The annual amount of acid deposition including precipitation and dry deposition is used as the reference criterion to classify the waters easy and difficult to acidification. As a case study, this model is applied to the southwest area of China, and some compatible results have been obtained. This model makes it possible to estimate the acidification trend of natural waters in a large scale of area. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Rainwater chemistry plays an important role in the earth-surficial ecosystem, but studies on rainwater chemical composition of karst agro-ecosystem are rare. To explore the rainwater alkalization and the provenance of components responsible for neutralization, two-years chemical monitoring of rainwater was carried out in a karst agricultural catchment in Southwest China. The main findings suggest that SO42−, NO3−, Ca2+, and NH4+ are the principal ions. All the ionic contents show distinctly seasonal variation (highest in winter) in response to variations in seasonal precipitation because the rain-scour process can efficiently remove atmospheric materials. Source identification indicates that Cl− and Na+ are mainly derived from marine input whereas SO42− and NO3− are controlled by anthropogenic emission, in particular, fixed emission sources. The source of NH4+ is attributed to intense agricultural production, while Ca2+ and Mg2+ are mainly derived from calcite dissolution. The rainwater alkalization caused by the seasonal acid neutralization (via basic components, Ca2+ and NH4+) is beneficial to crop growth but also reflect agricultural overfertilization. Sulfur controlled the total wet acid deposition (68%–94%) and could be a potential agent of weathering.

Influences of anthropogenic acids on carbonate weathering and CO2 sink in an agricultural karst wetland (South China)

Abstract:Carbonate minerals are the largest carbon (C) reservoir on earth. Quantitative assessment of carbonate weathering and CO2 sink flux caused by anthropogenic acids in karst wetland regions is imperative to improve understanding of the hydrogeochemical evolution and global C cycle in karst ecosystem. In this study, a typical field observation was conducted in the Huixian karst wetland (HKW) in South China. The hydrogeochemical and isotopic (δ15N-NO3 –, δ18O-NO3 –, and δ13CDIC) analyses combined with the MixSIAR model and stoichiometric coefficients were used to quantitatively estimate the influence of H2CO3, HNO3 and H2SO4 on carbonate weathering and CO2 sink flux. The results obtained showed that anthropogenic HNO3 and H2SO4 affect carbonate weathering in the HKW, evidenced by the significant correlations between hydrogeochemical parameters and δ13CDIC value. The quantitative results showed high contributions of HNO3 and H2SO4 to carbonate weathering in karst groundwater, with contribution ratio values of 20.91 ± 19.29 and 21.69 ± 26.88%, respectively. Besides karst water over-exploitation, this finding suggested that these anthropogenic acids were also an important cause of a decrease in ecological water levels, resulting in the shortage of karst water resource and degradation of wetland ecosystem. Moreover, the involvement of anthropogenic acids in the natural chemical weathering has significantly decreased the CO2 sink flux by 11.23 ± 7.94 and 41.60 ± 30.24% for surface water and groundwater, respectively, thereby potentially affecting the karst C cycle and global climate change. This present study provided an integrated quantitative approach for estimating the influence of H2CO3, HNO3, and H2SO4 on carbonate weathering and CO2 sink in karst wetland regions. Our study highlighted that the effects of anthropogenic acids on carbonate weathering need to be considered in future studies on the restoration of wetland ecosystems, particularly in intensive agricultural study areas.

Abstract:A regional survey of surface water acidification in Sichuan Basin was carried out during 2009–2011. Analysis of more than 90 samples revealed high pH and acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) in most surface waters, indicating that surface water acidification might not be a serious environmental issue in Sichuan Basin. However, some acidified surface water systems were present. Comparison of the results with a survey conducted 20 years ago revealed a significant decrease in ANC and increasing sulfate (SO42 ) and nitrate (NO3) concentrations. Rapid increases in sulfur dioxide (SO2 ) and nitrogen oxides (NOx ) emissions were likely the primary cause of surface water acidification, while high weathering of the purple soil in Sichuan Basin likely enabled strong buffering against acidification of surface water. However, low weathering occurred in areas of yellow earth and yellow-brown earth in the surrounding mountains, indicating that serious acid deposition could lead to acidification of surface water in these areas.
Factors affecting acid neutralizing capacity in the Adirondack region of New York: a solute mass balance approach

Abstract:High rates of acidic deposition in the Adirondack region of New York have accelerated acidification of soils and surface waters. Annual input-output budgets for major solutes and acid-neutralizing capacity (ANC) were estimated for 43 drainage lake-watersheds in the Adirondacks from 1998 to 2000. Sulfate was the predominant anion on an equivalent basis in both precipitation and drainage export. Calcium ion had the largest cation drainage export, followed by Mg2+. While these watersheds showed net nitrogen (N) retention, the drainage losses of SO4(2-), Cl-, base cations, and ANC exceeded their respective inputs from precipitation. Land cover (forest type and wetlands) affected the export of SO4(2-), N solutes, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The relationships of solute export with elevation (negative for base cations and Cl-, positive for NO3- and H+) suggest the importance of the concomitant changes of biotic and abiotic watershed characteristics associated with elevational gradients. The surface water ANC increased with the sum of base cations and was greatest in the lakes with watersheds characterized by thick deposits of glacial till. The surface water ANC was also higher in the lake-watersheds with lower DOC export. Some variation in lake ANC was associated with variability in acidic deposition. Using a classification system previously developed for Adirondack lakes on the basis primarily of surficial geology, lake-watersheds were grouped into five classes. The calculated ANC fluxes based on the major sinks and sources of ANC were comparable with measured ANC for the thick-till (I) and the medium-till lake-watersheds with low DOC (II). The calculated ANC was overestimated for the medium-till with high DOC (III) and the thin-till with high DOC (V) lake-watersheds, suggesting the importance of naturally occurring organic acids as an ANC sink, which was not included in the calculations. The lower calculated estimates than the measured ANC for the thin-till lake-watersheds with low DOC (IV) were probably due to the mobilization of Al as an ANC source in these watersheds that were highly sensitive to strong acid inputs. Our analysis of various drainage lakes across the Adirondacks on the basis of solute mass balances, coupled with the use of a lake classification system and GIS data, demonstrates that the lake-watersheds characterized by shallow deposits of glacial till are highly sensitive to acidic deposition not only in the southwestern Adirondack region where previous field-based studies were intensively conducted but also across the entire Adirondack region. Moreover, the supply of organic acids and Al mobilization substantially modify the acid-base status of surface waters.
Aquatic Acidification Sensitivity for Regional Environment: a Multi-Indicator Evaluation Approach

Abstract:With the aggravation of acid rain pollution and the enlarging of the acid rain regions in China, the sensitivity evaluation of natural waters to acidification on a regional scale become increasingly important. Acidification models based on a single indicator cannot give much information on aquatic acidification because of their simplicity; yet acidification models based on physical, chemical, hydrological and/or biological processes are not suitable for large scale regional research because of their exceptional complexity. In this paper, a multi-indicator comprehensive model for aquatic acidification sensitivity is proposed and applied. This model comprises some of the most important factors that are considered to influence water acidification, in particular: acid neutralization capacity, acidification capacity, acidification sensitive index, cation exchange capacity of soil, pH of soil, and weathering shuck types of soil-forming. It highlights the key stages of aquatic acidification by acid neutralization capacity, acidification capacity, and acidification sensitivity index. The model thereby estimates the acidification sensitivity of natural waters by using these indicators according to a weighting system. Equal-weight and non-equal-weight approaches are separately used to combine the six indicators into an overall sensitivity index of aquatic acidification. The result derived from an application to China on a national scale indicates the practicability of this approach. In China, the sensitive natural waters emerge in Southern China, which is already a heavy acid rain region, and in Northeastern China where the rainwater is beginning to become much acidic.

Abstract:The protection of water quality in reservoirs, particularly those designated for water supply, has garnered increasing attention for environmental management purposes. In this paper, the Shuangxikou Reservoir in Yuyao was chosen as a case study. The pollutant load at various points within the reservoir was analyzed and its eutrophication level was evaluated through a combination of site surveys and regular monitoring. Additionally, a model trial algorithm was utilized to investigate the water environment capacity concerning key pollutant indicators such as COD, NH3-N, TN, and TP in Shuangxikou Reservoir. The results indicated that the nutrient level in Shuangxikou Reservoir fell within the mid-trophic range, with water quality being superior in the central region compared to other areas. However, when compared to the water quality target of Class II surface water mandated by water environment functional zoning, the current TN and TP content in the reservoir exceeds acceptable levels. Consequently, targeted measures are imperative to enhance water quality in the reservoir.

Abstract:This study presents seasonal and spatial variations of the ammonifying bacteria (AB) and denitrifying bacteria (DNB) and physicochemical parameters in 10 lakes and reservoirs in the northeast of China. Water samples were collected in winter (January), spring (March), summer (July) and fall (November) in 2011. The study revealed that physicochemical parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), NH4 (+) -N and nitrate as nitrogen were closely related with the distribution of AB and DNB. Seasonally, the levels of AB presents gradually upward trend from winter to summer, and declines in fall and DNB were higher in spring and fall than summer and lowest in winter. Spatially, the annual average of AB among 10 lakes and reservoirs showed insignificant difference (P > 0.05), for DNB, Udalianchi and Lianhuan Lake were lower than others (P < 0.05). Regression correlation analysis showed that the levels of AB and DNB had a close relationship with nitrogen nutrition. Three principal components were identified of total variances which are conditionally classified by the 'natural' factor (PC1) and 'nitrogen nutrients' (PC2, PC3). According the principal component scores, cluster analysis detected two distinct groups: (C1) mainly affected by nitrogen nutrients and (C2) natural environmental factors.

Abstract:By using experiments and acid base balance calculation, acid and base characteristics of ambient aerosols in Qingdao area was studied. The content of sulfuric acid in ambient aerosols was analyzed, the existing forms of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ in ambient aerosols were deduced, the sources of SO 2- 4 and NO - 3 and the contribution of IP and TSP to rainwater acidification were estimated. It is found that the total effect of IP and TSP to rainwater is neutralization function, and their neutralization capability (carbonate) is about (22±20)% of the content of Ca and Mg in ambient aerosols.
[Mapping Sensitivity of Surface Waters to Acidification in China].

Abstract:Acidification of surface waters can be decided by some environmental factors, such as soil's buffering capacity, neutralization capacity of bedrock to acid deposition and types of land use, among which the most important factor is the soil's resistance to acidification. Therefore, information about soils, geology and land use can be used to predict the regional occurrence of acidification surface waters under different flows. In this paper, information and data about Chinese soils, geology and land use types were collected to determine and to map the sensitivity of surface waters to acidification. Results showed that in China, most surface waters were not sensitive to acidification. The few most sensitive surface waters were located in the north part of Northeastern China, accounting for 2.67% of all the country land. It was the combined results of strongly acidified ortho podzolic soil, acidified bedrock and coniferous forest. Surface waters which were not very sensitive to acidification were distributed both in the region of dark brown forest soil in Northeastern China and in the ferralsol and yellow-brown earth area in Southern China, occupying 15.2% of all the country land. The other surface waters which distributed on 82.11% of all the country land were not sensitive to acidification at all. Most in the Northern China because of the high resistance of soils to acidification and the others were in the Southern China where calcareous soils and agricultural lands were widely distributed. Since soils were quite resistant to acid, acidification of surface waters of large area will not likely occur in the southern region of China suffering from heavy acid deposition in the near future. Nevertheless, the acid deposition in Northern China should be controlled as soon as possible in case that acidified surface waters will be found there.
Characteristics of and Influencing Factors of Hydrochemistry and Carbon/Nitrogen Variation in the Huangzhouhe River Basin, a World Natural Heritage Site

Abstract:In karst areas, the characteristics of water chemistry and carbon and nitrogen are of great significance to basic research. The contents of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, HCO3−, SO42−, NO3−, Cl−, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total nitrogen (TN) in water samples from 18 rivers and 14 springs in the Huangzhouhe River Basin were determined. The results showed that the water chemistry type in the Huangzhouhe River Basin is HCO3-Ca-Mg. The chemical composition is mainly affected by dolomite weathering and also by ion exchange and other human activities. The river and spring DIC remain at the same level in the upper and middle reaches and decrease in the lower reaches. The NO3-N and TN of river water and TN of spring water increase in the middle reaches, while NO3-N of spring water decreases in the lower reaches. The DOC in the basin increases with the increase of SO42− and Cl−, mainly due to the human influence of agricultural and domestic sewage. In the basin, the NO3-N and TN in spring water are larger, and the DOC in river water is larger, mainly because there are more phytoplankton and human activities in the river water. The carbon and nitrogen in the Huangzhouhe River Basin are mainly HCO3− and NO3− ions. The evaluation of pH, Cl−, NO3-N, SO42−, and TDS shows that the water quality is good and the ecological environment is good.
