Abstract:The dispersion of Fe2O3 on various metal oxide supports (SiO2, gamma-Al2O3, CeO2, ZrO2 and TiO2) has been studied by Mossbauer spectroscopy and XRD. The vacant sites on the surface of the support significantly influence the form of the iron oxide. For silica-supported iron oxide, Fe3+ cations concentrate readily to form crystalline alpha-Fe2O3 particles, owing to the lack of vacant surface sites on silica. However, for other metal oxide supports, such as gamma-Al2O3, CeO2, ZrO2 and TiO2, which have vacant surface sites, Fe3+ cations are preferentially incorporated into the vacant surface sites and the chemical surroundings of these Fe3+ cations, incorporated in different types of surface sites, are different. Crystalline alpha-Fe2O3 particles appear after all usable vacant sites have been occupied by Fe3+ cations.

Abstract:Based on the assumption that the (001) plane is the preferentially exposed plane of TiO2(anatase), the dispersion capacity of MO (M = Cu, Ni, Zn) and MoO3 supported on TiO2(anatase) has been calculated to be 6.98/nm2 for M2+ and 4.91/nm2 for Mo6+ by the incorporation model, which is in agreement with the results determined by XRD and TPR.

Abstract:A somewhat slow but controllable impregnation method with the dipping of support into an excess of aqueous solution of (NH4)3[Fe(C2O4)3].xH2O is adopted to prepare well-dispersed or monolayer-type ferric oxide on various supports. Other methods with the same and other conditions are also used to make a comparison among them. The influences on the adsorption process are investigated and the suitable conditions are determined for the different supported systems. Extensive characterization has been done on the physico-chemical properties of these systems. The catalytic performances for different test reactions are also carried out on the various supported systems with distinctly different dispersions.
Studies On Supported Metal Oxide-Oxide Support Interactions (An Incorporation Model)

Abstract:XRD, XPS, SSIMS, LRS, and FT-IR are used to explore the valency, composition and structure of the dispersed metal oxide species on supports with different structures, i.e., on ceria and gamma-alumina. The results indicated that the dispersion of various ionic compounds are proceeded by the incorporation of the metal cations into the surface vacant sites on the support provided that the loading amounts of the compounds are not higher than their dispersion capacities. The key factors determining the dispersion capacities of the ionic compounds are: 1) the surface structure of the support which determines the size and number of the vacant sites available; 2) the valency of the dispersed ionic compound and the size of the anion, from which the shielding effect of the capping anion(s) can be evaluated, and 3) the sizes of the dispersed cations and the vacant sites on the surface, from which the sites can be used for incorporation can be identified. The quantitative results deduced from the incorporation model and from the independent experiments are consistent, providing further evidence that the model captures the essentials of the interactions between the dispersed metal oxide and support.
Study of Pt Dispersion on Ce Based Supports and the Influence on the CO Oxidation Reaction

Abstract:The effect of Pt dispersion on the different supports was evaluated. The Pt structural and textural properties have been analyzed by XRD, HRTEM and CO pulse chemisorptions. The redox and structure property between Pt and supports was characterized by H2-TPR and Raman. CO-DRIFTS characterized the identification of Pt coordination. Results demonstrate that the Pt dispersion is dependent of Ce contents of supports. The Pt supports interaction tends to become weak as Ce content decreasing, leading to higher reduction temperature for active oxygen at low temperature. The stronger interaction for Pt loaded on CeO2 and Ce0.7Zr0.3O2 results in superior CO oxidation performance. The TOF for Pt loaded on Ce based supports presents linear increasing as Pt dispersion increasing.

Abstract:Laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) are used to characterize a series of TiO2/γ-Al2O3, NiO/γ-Al2O3, and NiO/TiO2/γ-Al2O3 samples. For TiO2/γ-Al2O3 samples, LRS results indicate that the dispersion capacity of titania on γ-Al2O3 is about 0.62 mmol 100 m−2γ-Al2O3, which is slightly higher than the theoretical value (0.56 mmol 100 m−2γ-Al2O3) calculated by the consideration of the incorporation model (Y. Chen and L. F. Zhang, Catal. Lett. 12, 51 (1992)). At low TiO2 loading, ≤0.62 mmol 100 m−2-γ-Al2O3, only highly dispersed titania species are found on the surface, possibly due to the incorporation of the dispersed Ti4+ ions into the surface vacancies of γ-Al2O3. Increasing the loading amount of titania leads to the formation of crystalline TiO2 besides the surface-dispersed titania species. The results show that the state of titania is related to its loading on γ-alumina. The results of XRD and UV-DRS show that the dispersion capacity of NiO on titania-modified γ-Al2O3 is lower than that of NiO on γ-Al2O3, which is probably caused by the decrease of the useable surface vacancies on γ-Al2O3 due to the incorporation of the Ti4+ ions. TPR results of NiO/γ-Al2O3 and NiO/TiO2/γ-Al2O3 samples reveal that the reduction behaviors of NiO dispersed on γ-Al2O3 and on titania-modified γ-Al2O3 are apparently different. This result emphasizes that the surface structure of the support is important to the properties of the dispersed metal oxide species. The coordination environments of the dispersed titania and nickel oxide species are discussed on the basis of the incorporation model proposed previously.

Abstract:The source of activity of metal/metal oxides has always been an interesting, important but highly challenging research topic in heterogeneous catalysis. In CO oxidation reaction, this work clarifies dispersion and support dictated activities of Pt including single-atom (Pt1), 2.8 nm (PtNP-S) and 36 nm (PtNP-L) Pt supported on both reducible TiO2 and “inert” Al2O3 supports. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) shows that chemical state of Pt is affected by both dispersion and support: Pt1 presents fully oxidized state in both Pt1/TiO2 and Pt1/Al2O3; PtNP-S in PtNP-S/TiO2 appear nearly oxidized state while about half of Pt is metallic state in PtNP-S/Al2O3; PtNP-L in both PtNP-L/TiO2 and PtNP-L/Al2O3 exhibit metallic state. All the Pt species supported on TiO2 present much lower apparent activation barriers (Eapp) than that on Al2O3. Moreover, Pt1/TiO2 possesses dozen times of efficiency than PtNP-S/TiO2 although they have similar Eapp values. A truth is finally made clear that a reducible metal oxide with low oxygen vacancy formation energy is critical to endow Pt/metal oxide a high activity and the single-atom dispersion of Pt is the way to maximize the active sites of Pt/metal oxide.

Surface state of NiO supported on γ-Al2O3 and TiO2/γ-Al2O3 supports

Abstract:The dispersion of transitional metal oxide (NiO, CuO or MoO 3) on modified oxide support (TiO 2 γ Al 2O 3, MoO 3 t ZrO 2 or NiO t ZrO 2) and the interactions among the oxide components in these ternary oxide systems are discussed. The experimentally measured dispersion capacities of the transition metal oxides are basically consistent with the values estimated by the incorporation model proposed previously based on the studies of binary oxide systems. The surface composition, structure and properties of the supported oxide species are closely related to the surface structure of the support, the loading amount and the adding sequence of the individual oxide components as well as the calcination temperature used for the preparation of the samples.

Abstract:The surface interaction between copper oxide and CeO2-gamma-Al2O3 mixed oxide support was studied by using XRD, XPS and TPR. It was shown that the copper oxide species have stronger interaction with CeO2 than with gamma-Al2O3, and the copper oxide species are preferentially dispersed on the surface of CeO2 if the loading of copper oxide species is lower than its dispersion capacity on CeO2 support. However, the copper oxide species are dispersed on the surface of gamma-Al2O3 if the loading of copper oxide species exceeds its dispersion capacity on CeO2 support. These results indicated that the formation of crystalline ceria reduces the use of ceria as a promoter in the ceria-modified catalysts if the loading of ceria exceeds its dispersion capacity on the support. These results are helpful to control the loading of modifying reagent in the preparation of supported catalysts.

Abstract:Supported catalysts are widely used in industry and in academic research, and the investigation of the interaction between I the dispersed surface components and supports is key to the understanding of the nature of catalytic reactions and the design and development of effective and practical catalysts. This review summarizes some results of our group in this field. The related catalysts include supported metal oxides such as CuO/gamma-Al2O3, CuO/CexZr1-xO2, and CuO/TixSn1-xO2, and the reactions are mainly focused on the CO oxidation and NO + CO reaction. These mentioned catalysts, prepared by adjusting the loadings of active species, introducing modifiers, and changing preparation conditions, are characterized by normal measurements for solid catalysts in order to explore the functions of each component and monitor the variation of activity in the reactions. It is shown that: (1) the dispersion capacity of metal oxides or halides on the surface of oxide supports and some of their properties can be explained on the basis of the "incorporation model"; (2) the dispersed active species on the different supports or the dispersed active species with different structures on the same support exhibit different redox and catalytic properties, which are resulted from the diversity of their existing states; (3) the results obtained from CO oxidation and NO + CO reactions proceeding on the associated catalysts indicate that it is possible to design catalysts by exploring the relationship among "composition-structure-property".

Abstract:X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) were employed to investigate the dispersion and reduction behaviors of the Fe(2)O(3)/CuO/gamma-Al(2)O(3) system. The results indicated that: (1) the crystalline CuO particle in the CuO/gamma-Al(2)O(3) samples was redispersed during impregnating CuO/gamma-Al(2)O(3) samples with Fe(NO(3))(3) solutions; (2) two different dispersion states of surface iron species could be observed, i.e., State I corresponding to the iron(III) species located in the D layer on the surface of gamma-Al(2)O(3) and State II corresponding to those in the C layer. The dispersed states of surface iron(III) species were closely related to the iron loading amount; (3) the copper species located in the D layer of alumina surface was easily reduced and the copper species located in the C layer were more stable, which could be due to the influence of the iron(III) species in the different layers; (4) in the NO+CO reaction, the catalytic performances were enhanced due to the Cu-Fe synergism and the main active species in this system should be the surface-dispersed copper oxide species.
Surface Hydroxyl-Determined Migration and Anchoring of Silver on Alumina in Oxidative Redispersion

Abstract:Hydroxyl (OH) groups are widely present on an oxide surface, which have been recognized as a key factor affecting surface properties of the oxide and interaction of the metal overlayer with the oxide. Here, γ-alumina (γ-Al2O3) supports with different OH contents are prepared by calcinating pseudo-boehmite (AlOOH) at different temperatures. The surface OH effect on oxidative redispersion of supported Ag nanoparticles including surface migration and anchoring of Ag species has been explored using in situ X-ray diffraction and UV–visible spectroscopy, as well as ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. We reveal that the dispersion capacity, i.e., the amount of anchored Ag species associated with the steady dispersion state is thermodynamically determined by the surface OH contents, while the dispersion rate related to the surface migration process is kinetically limited by surface OH densities at low Ag loading. The higher dispersion ability is observed on the support with higher OH contents, and the quicker dispersion occurs on the support with higher OH densities. The results reveal that both OH contents and OH densities are critical in the redispersion of metal particles on oxide surfaces, which can be used to manipulate the Ag-catalyzed CO oxidation reaction.

Abstract:> In MoO 3 /TiO 2 , MoO 3 /γ-Al+2O 3 and MoO 3 /SiO 2 systems, the relationships between I Mo3d /I Ti2p , I Mo3d /I Al2p , I Mo3d /I Si2p and added amount of MoO 3 (g/g carrier) were studied by XPS. Experiments showed that all the curves obtained had a turning point each, corresponding to the monolayer dispersion threshold by XRD in our previous paper. This means that both methods are successful for studying the maximum dispersion amount and surface state of supported metal oxides (or salts) catalysts. Although the two methods are not from the same principle, they are verifiable and complementary to cach other in studying dispersion problems.
A New Way to Prepare Some Supported Catalysts with Highly Specific Surfaces

Abstract:In this paper, a new way to increase the specific surface areas of supported catalysts has been suggested. The results for MoO3/ZrO2, WO3/ZrO2, CuO/ZrO2, SO42-/ZrO3, NiO/ZrO2, Fe2O3/ZrO2, Fe-2(SO4)(3)/ZrO2, MoO3/TiO2, SO42-/TiO2, NiSO4/TiO2, V2O5/TiO2 etc. system show that the specific surfaces areas of the samples, prepared by impregnating some hydoxides then calcinating at high temperature, are much larger than those of the samples prepared with a traditional method-impregnating their oxides calcinated at the same temperature. Using this way, the specific surface areas of some supported catalysts can increase by serveral times. The surface areas of some supports such as zirconia and titania are not large enough, and they are easy to sinter at high temperature. In these cases, the advantage of this preparation method is fully displayed, and the specific surface areas of the resulting zirconia - or titania - supported catalysts can compare favourably with those of the catalysts prepared from some classical supports (such as gamma-Al2O3, SiO2).In addition, it has been proved by means of XPS, XRD, LRS and DTA that as an active component disperse on a support as a monolayer and its content comes up to its monolayer dispersion capacity, the specific surface area of the obtained catalyst would be the largest. We suggest a mechanism that an active component covered on a support can not only segregate its particles, but also hinder the surface diffusion of support, and as a result, its crystalline growth, an accompanying phase transformation and inter-crystalline sintering are all retarded.
A Vicinal Effect for Promoting Catalysis of Pd1/TiO2: Supports of Atomically Dispersed Catalysts Play More Roles Than Simply Serving As Ligands.

Abstract:Atomically dispersing metal atoms on supports has been emerging as an effective strategy to maximize the atom utilization of metals for catalysis. However, due to the lack of effective tools to characterize the detailed structure of metal-support interface, the chemical functions of supports in atomically dispersed metal catalysts are hardly elucidated at the molecular level. In this work, an atomically dispersed Pd1/TiO2 catalyst with Ti(III) vicinal to Pd is prepared and used to demonstrate the direct involvement of metal atoms on support in the catalysis of dispersed metal atoms. Systematic studies reveal that the Ti(III)-O-Pd interface facilitates the activation of O2 into superoxide (O2-), thus promoting the catalytic oxidation. The catalyst exhibits the highest CO turn-over frequency among ever-reported Pd-based catalysts, and enhanced catalysis in the combustion of harmful volatile organic compound (i.e., toluene) and green-house gas (i.e., methane). The demonstrated direct involvement of metal atoms on oxide support suggests that the real active sites of atomically dispersed metal catalysts can be far beyond isolated metal atoms themselves. Metal atoms on oxide supports in the vicinity serve as another vector to promote the catalysis of atomically dispersed metal catalysts.

Abstract:It is known that studying the nature of the interaction between the ionic compound and the oxide support is a key step in gaining a further understanding of the physico chemical properties of the supported catalysts. Based on the consideration of the surface structure of the support and the intrinsic properties (valences, ionic radius and electron configuration of the metal ion, etc) of the ionic compound, an “Incorporation Model”was used to illustrate and predicate the dispersion capacities of some ionic compounds supported on different oxide supports, which could provide scientific basis for the design and preparation of catalysts. In this paper, some works done in our group for the past 10 years have been briefly introduced.

Abstract:The influence of titanium oxide on the surface interactions of MO (M=Cu and Ni)/γ-Al2O3 catalysts has been studied by using XRD, LRS and XPS. For the catalysts with titania loadings lower than 0.56mmol Ti4+/100m2 Al2O3 (i.e., the dispersion capacity), the dispersion of MO oxides on the surface of γ-Al2O3 support is significantly suppressed by the dispersed Ti4+ ions. The inhibiting effect is dependent on the properties of MO oxides. When titania loadings are considerably higher than the dispersion capacity, MO oxides exhibit a rather stronger interaction with the formed TiO2 particles than the γ-Al2O3 support, and some of the dispersed M2+ ions might be accommodated by the vacant sites on TiO2. Therefore, the catalysts can be considered as the compositions of MO/TiO2 and MO/TiO2/γ-Al2O3 (dispersed titania). TPR results show that either dispersed titania or formed TiO2 particles can promote the reduction of copper oxide species, but the latter to a greater extent. Based on the consideration of the incorporation model, it is proposed that the surface structure of the support plays an important role in surface interactions.
Surface Interactions of MoO3/ Α-Fe2o3 System

Abstract:α-Fe 2 O 3 -supported molybdena catalysts have been prepared by heating a mixture of MoO 3 and α-Fe 2 O 3 . XRD, XPS, LRS, TG-DTA and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used to characterize the interactions between MoO 3 and α-Fe 2 O 3 . The dispersion capacity of MoO 3 on the surface of α-Fe 2 O 3 determined by XRD and XPS was 0.8 mmol/100m 2 α-Fe 2 O 3 in the samples calcined at 420°C. For the sample with low MoO 3 loading, LRS and FT-IR results showed that Mo 6+ ions were located in the tetrahedral vacant sites on the surface of α-Fe 2 O 3 , signed as Mo-I. The amount of Mo-II species, formed by Mo 6+ ions incorporated into the octahedral vacant sites, increased with the MoO 3 loading. Based on the assumption that the (001) plane of α-Fe 2 O 3 is preferentially exposed, almost all the Mo 6+ ions of the dispersed molybdena species existed at the surface octahedral sites for the sample with MoO 3 loading close or beyond the dispersion capacity, and formed the Mo-II species. In this case, the capping O 2− ions linking with the incorporated Mo 6+ ions formed a surface epitaxial structure, which was in good agreement with the results predicted by the incorporation model proposed previously. XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopy of the MoO 3 / α-Fe 2 O 3 samples calcined at different temperatures showed that the calcination temperature could strongly influence the interaction extent: (i) at 420°C, MoO 3 dispersed on the surface of α-Fe 2 O 3 and formed surface Mo species; (ii) at 500°C, MoO 3 reacted with the bulk of α-Fe 2 O 3 and formed Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 compound.

Abstract:Tuning the atomic interface configuration of noble metals (NMs) and transition-metal oxides is an effective straightforward yet challenging strategy to modulate the activity and stability of heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, Pd supported on mesoporous Fe2O3 with a high specific surface area was rationally designed and chosen to construct the Pd/iron oxide interface. As a versatile model, the physicochemical environments of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) could be precisely controlled by taming the reduction temperature. The experimental and density functional theory calculation results unveiled that the catalyst in the support–metal interface confinement (SMIC) state showed significantly enhanced catalytic activity and sintering resistance for CO oxidation. The constructed Fe sites at the interfaces between FeOx overlayers and Pd NPs not only provided additional coordinative unsaturated ferrous sites for the adsorption and activation of O2, thereby facilitating the activation efficiency of O2, but also impressively changed the reaction pathway of CO oxidation. As a result, the catalyst followed the Pd/Fe dual-site mechanism instead of the classical Mars–van Krevelen mechanism. For the catalyst in the strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) state, its catalytic activity was seriously suppressed because of the excessive encapsulation of the active Pd sites by FeOx overlayers.
