Abstract:The solid behavior in a turbulent fluidized bed was studied by combination of experimental measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Solid fractions were measured by optical fiber probe under three different superficial gas velocities and three different static bed heights at different axial levels. The experimental results showed that the lateral distribution of solid fraction is core-annulus and the operating conditions can influence the shape of the axial bed void profiles. In the CFD simulations, an Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid model that incorporates the kinetic theory of granular flow was used to describe the gas–solid two-phase flow in a turbulent fluidized bed. A modified drag model was proposed using a scaling factor to reduce the universal drag laws, which accounts for the effect of particle clustering. The drag model can predict the coexisting regions, the bottom dense, bubbling region and the dilute, dispersed flow region observed in experiments. No significant difference was observed between results after application of laminar and turbulence model. The simulated axial bed void and radial solid fraction fit well with experimental data. The transient local solid fraction and the particle velocity were also investigated.

Abstract:Bubble and particle motion behaviors are investigated experimentally in a gas solid fluidized bed with liquid spray on the side wall. The particles used in the experiment are classified as Geldart B particles. The results reveal that when the fluid drag force is less than the liquid bridge force between particles, liquid distribute all over the bed. Bubble size increases as the increase of inter-particle force, then decreases owing to the increase of particle weight with increasing liquid flow rate. When the fluid drag force is greater than the liquid bridge force, liquid mainly distribute in the upper part of the bed. And it is difficult for the wet particles to form agglomerates. Bubble size decreases with increasing liquid flow rate due to the increasing of minimum fluidization velocity. Besides, the acoustic emission (AE) measurements illustrate that the liquid adhesion and evaporation on particles could enhance the particles motion intensity. Consequently, the bubble and particle behaviors change due to the variation in fluidized gas velocity and liquid flow rate should be seriously considered when attempting to successfully design and operate the side wall liquid spray gas solid fluidized bed. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON JET PENETRATION ANDCOALESCENCE FROM TWO VERTICAL NOZZLES IN ASEMI-CIRCULAR FLUIDIZED BED

Abstract:Jet penetration and gas coalescence behaviour from two 42 mm I.D.semi-circular nozzles were studied in a 500 mm I.D. semi-circular fluidized bed. The experimental results showed that the jet penetration from a single nozzle has no change with the variation of two adjacent vertical nozzles, which is consistent with the previous findings from a two-dimensional bed. An empirical equation for jet penetration was proposed for a wide range of experimental data. Two typical kinds of jet coalescence were found and characterized, that is, jet coalescence and bubble coalescence. Moreover, the criterion for these two kinds of gas coalescence and the relation of the height and angle of coalescence process with experimental conditions were further discussed.

Abstract:Jet penetration depth (JPD) and bubble coalescence behavior were studied for two semi-circular nozzles (42 mm in I.D.) in a 500 mm I.D. semi-circular fluidized bed. The results showed that JPD of a nozzle didn't change as nozzle distance varies for the configuration of double nozzles, which was consistent with the previous result in a two-dimensional fluidized bed [6]. Based on data from this study and literature, an empirical correlation was given for prediction of JPD in gas-solids fluidized beds. Furthermore, two types of gas coalescence, jet coalescence and bubble coalescence, were found and characterized in the research on disturbance of double nozzles' flow. And the criterion for these two types of coalescence, as well as the relationship between height of gas coalescence and operating conditions, were finally discussed.

Abstract:Evolution of vortex structures in round jet was simulated with a three-dimensional discrete vortex filament method. The motion of the particles was described by a Lagrangian equation and the counteraction of particles on the flow was taken into account by using a modified velocity model. It is indicated that in two-phase jet flow the introduced particles restrain the crosswise dispersion of jet shear layer and mergence of vortex structures. With the increase of St number, the influence of flow on particles motion is decreased, but the counteraction of particles on the flow is increased. The difference of flow field obtained with two models, one-way coupling model and two-way coupling model, is greater than that of particles trajectories.

Abstract:The gas discharge patterns, a jet and a spout, generated by a vertical nozzle in an 8-m-high, 0.5-m-diameter jetting fluidized bed were investigated using frame-by-frame analysis and Sth VCD software analysis. The static bed height was varied from 0.38 to 0.66 m, and the nozzle jet velocity was varied from 16.1 to 64.26 m/s. A correlation was developed using experimental data to predict the transition of the flow pattern from a jet to a spout. The study shows that the major frequency in the power spectrum density function agrees with the jet collapse frequency measured by frame-by-frame analysis and Sth VCD software analysis. The major frequency in the power spectrum density function increases with increasing jet gas velocity. In addition, the jet velocity at the critical point in the curve of the major frequency versus the jet gas velocity corresponds to the gas velocity for the transition from a jet to a spout.

Abstract:The gas-liquid flow structure and interfacial behavior of submerged air jets were investigated experimentally using high speed digital video camera and image processing techniques. The jet pressure ratio varied from 1.8 to 4.8 in the experiment. And results from different jet nozzles were processed and compared. Statistical characteristics of the jet diameters along the axial distance were obtained and analyzed. Time series analysis was implemented to study the interface unsteadiness by calculating the gas-liquid interface deviation. The results showed that the jet diameters increase first linearly then nonlinearly and its growth rate decreases along the axial distance. The reason for the divergence between the result of this experiment and those done by other researchers was analyzed. Comparing the results of different pressure ratios and nozzle diameters, we found that larger jet pressure ratios have larger jet diameters and nozzle diameters nearly have no bearing on the distribution of dimensionless jet diameters. The interface unsteadiness in low and high pressure ratios exhibited totally distinct properties. And a minimum unsteady value was found along the axis of the air jets.

Abstract:An experimental study was conducted in a 500 mm ID, 8,000 mm high jetting fluidized bed with double vertical nozzles using frame-by-frame analysis of experimental videos. Three different flow patterns (separated jets, flow transition and jet coalescence), with the two jets always coalesce within the penetration depth, were first observed in the jetting fluidized bed. Radial profiles in the fluidized bed were measured with a PC-4 optical fiber probe. Effects of jet gas velocity and nozzle distance on the radial and axial voidage distribution were studied. The bed hydrodynamic behavior was characterized using a deterministic chaotic theory to analyze effects of jet gas velocity static bed height, and nozzle distance on the correlation dimension, which inn-eased with increasing jet gas velocity and static bed height.

Abstract:A novel annular spouted bed with multiple gas nozzles, has been proposed for dryness, pyrolysis, and gasification of coal particulates. It consists of two homocentric upright cylinders with some annularly located spouting gas nozzles between inner and outer cylinders. A three-dimensional Eulerian multiphase model, with closure law according to the kinetic theory of granular flow, was used to simulate the gas/solid flow behaviors in the spouted beds. The simulation results show that numerical simulation is a useful tool to get detailed information about the gas/solid turbulent motions in the novel spouted beds. Along the bed height, the pressure tends to decrease. Particle concentration increases with increasing of distance away from the nozzle. The particle concentration is less for a high spouting gas velocity. The gas velocities at the center axis of nozzle decrease with increasing the static bed height.

Abstract:In a  0.5?m×8?m semicircular jetting fluidized bed with double nozzles using millet as fluidized material, studies of various flow regimes, i.e.,separate jet regime, transition flow regime and jet coalescence regime were carried out.The equations of transition of flow regimes were proposed.Experimental results indicated that penetration depth increased with increasing jet gas velocity,while penetration depth decreased with decreasing nozzle pitch.A relationship of penetration depth and nozzle distance in a large jetting fluidized bed with double nozzles was obtained.With smaller nozzle distance, jet coalescence always occurred and jet coalescence height replaced the penetration depth.Thus,a correlation of jet coalescence height was also presented.Meanwhile, deterministic chaos theory was used to investigate the flow hydrodynamic characteristics in the bed.When p/d 0 is equal to 5.48,the curve of correlation dimension vs .jetting gas velocity showed a maximum increase rate corresponding with complex flow structure.Correlation dimension increased with static bed height.

Abstract:Gas-solid motions in a three-dimensional conical spouted bed with a draft tube are investigated based on a simulation carried out by the coupling approach of computational fluid dynamics combined with the discrete-element method. The distribution properties of the velocity, the concentration, and the flux of the solid phase are discussed. The vertical solid velocity in the central region initially increases, diminishes gradually, and finally decreases sharply in the region above the draft tube. Vigorous lateral solid motion occurs in the periphery of the fountain and the spout-annulus interface. In addition, the vertical solid flux shows a large value in the spout. A larger vertical velocity but a more dilute solid concentration can be detected along the axial direction when enlarging the gas flow rate.

Abstract:Based on two-fluid model,the gas-droplet flows in nozzle were studied numerically using variable step Runge-Kutta scheme.Heat interaction between the two phases was introduced in the model.The characters of subsonic and supersonic flows were analyzed,and the impacts of droplet size and initial void fraction on the flow field were investigated.Simulation results show that the liquid velocity increases more slowly compared with the gas velocity.With the decreasing droplet size,the exit liquid velocity increases,but the gas velocity decreases.Both gas and liquid velocities increase with the increasing initial void fraction.For the supersonic flow,the Mach number at the throat is less than 1,and the throat area decreases with the increasing initial void fraction and droplet size.The results are useful for the investigation on the performance of mist jet propulsion system.

Abstract:The flow and dispersion behaviors of the fine particle injection in a gas-solid fluidized bed were studied numerically based on the two-dimensional multi-fluid model. The injection path and flow pattern of the flotsam solids were investigated. A distinct pair of counter-rotating vortices of flotsam particles appeared in the middle and upper parts of the fluidized bed. Higher injection rate was preferred for faster flotsam dispersion. The effects of flotsam injection on bed hydrodynamics were investigated with regard to the velocity distribution and volume fraction of bulk materials and the bubble size. Consequently, the mixing properties of the flotsam particles and bulk solids were quantified by the fluid-free flotsam fraction profile and the standard deviation. The fluidized bed was mixed acceptably with modest local segregation for all the conditions simulated. Lower injection velocity made contributions to better mixing especially for the duration of injection.

Abstract:Experiments were carried out in a spouted bed with auxiliary gas introduced horizontally. Auxiliary gas introduced horizontally has an obvious effect on the minimum spouting gas velocity; the minimum spouting gas velocity decreases with increasing auxiliary gas velocity. An empirical equation for the minimum spouting velocity is modified to fit the experimental data. With an increase in the proportion of the auxiliary gas for a fixed total gas flow, the fountain height decreases, but the relative voidage in the spout decreases, which means that more particles are circulated. Comparatively, the spouting gas has a distinct effect on the particle velocity in the spouting region, but the auxiliary gas velocity affects the particle velocity in the annular region markedly. The radial profiles of relative voidage and particle velocity at different axial heights are also studied in detail.

Abstract:The gas-solid flow in a three-dimensional slot-rectangular spouted bed is numerically investigated under the parallel framework of the computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method coupling approach. The fluid phase is solved with the k-epsilon turbulence model at the computational grid level, while the solid phase is tracked individually with the discrete element method at the particle scale. Millions of particles are calculated using a total number of 112 CPUs in a cluster. The predicted pressure drop profiles and the minimum spouting velocities of the calculations under different bed heights agree well with the experimental data. The startup procedure and the solid flow pattern are identified. Then, wall effects on the distribution properties of the gas-solid hydrodynamics are explored. Moreover, the interaction between spout and annulus and the effects of the superficial velocity and bed height on the bed hydrodynamics are discussed. The results show that a larger pressure drop appears in the system with a higher bed height. A bubble with its shape influenced by the slot geometry is formed in the startup procedure. Moreover, the bed hydrodynamics show a strong 3-D behavior along the depth direction. Large vertical solid flux mainly concentrates in the central region of the spout. The spout-annulus interface is dramatically influenced by the slot shape and shows different evolutionary tendencies in the different directions, and this influence becomes weaker along the bed height. The larger the superficial velocity is, the higher the bed height and the larger the spouting height appear. Besides, solid flow patterns under different bed heights with the superficial velocity the same ratio to the corresponding minimum spouting velocity show a similar behavior.

Abstract:Through a combined computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method approach, the effect of the operating parameters on the hydrodynamics and heat-transfer properties of gas-solid two-phase flows in a spouted bed are extensively investigated. Considering the high velocity in the fountain region, gas turbulence is resolved by employing the large-eddy simulation. The rolling friction model is adopted for more precise predictions of solid behavior near the wall. Subsequently, the gas-solid flow patterns, gas-solid velocities, and temperature evolution are investigated. Moreover, different operating conditions and geometry configurations are evaluated with respect to heat-transfer performance. The results provide a fundamental understanding of heat-transfer mechanisms in spouted beds.

Abstract:The flow characteristics in a novel cylindrical spouted bed with spherical longitudinal vortex generators is numerically investigated by two-fluid model (TFM) with kinetic theory for granular flow, the longitudinal vortex technology is adopted in the spouted bed so as to strengthen the particles radial mixing between spout and annulus zones, the row number effect (1-3 rows) of longitudinal vortex generators (LVGs) on gas-solid flow behavior in three dimensional spouted beds was numerically simulated. The CFD results show that, longitudinal vortices can effectively increase particle volume fraction near annulus zone in the spouted bed, the maximum increase of particle volume fraction near annulus region is 183%, and the pressure drop in spouted beds increases with increasing of LVGs' row number. There exists an optimal row number (equal 2) of LVGs, at witch the radial velocity of particle phase reaches maximum in the limited spouted bed space, the value of turbulent kinetic energy of gas phase in spouted bed can be significantly promoted by longitudinal vortex, espeically in the spout zone and near the annulus region. Also, the enhancement effect of multi-row LVGs on turbulent kinetic energy of gas phase decreases when the cross section height of spouted beds increases. Abstract:The penetration depth for millet (1.64 mm) as fluidization particles (Geldart group D) was determined in a large jetting fluidized bed of 0.5 m inner diameter and 8 m height and with two nozzles is recorded by a video camera and analyzed frame by frame. Based on experimental data, an empirical correlation for the penetration depth is proposed. Experimental results indicate that the penetration depth increases with an increase in the jetting velocity. Under the same jet gas velocity, the penetration depth decreases as the nozzle distance decreases. Meanwhile, a simple correlation for jet coalescence height is found. A radial voidage profile in the jetting fluidized bed is investigated using a PC-4 fiber optic concentration probe, the effects of jet gas velocity, and the distance between two nozzles on the radial voidage distribution, and a radial profile with unequal jet gas velocity in a jetting fluidized bed is studied.
