Abstract:With some technological breakthroughs such as sequencing and microarray in the recent years, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and phenomics have made a great progress in the world. Theories and technologies of crop breeding have also been revolutionarized considerably. Traditional crop breeding is based on phenotypic selection, which is often called "empirical breeding" with poor predictability, long breeding cycle and low breeding efficiency. Modern crop molecular breeding including marker-assisted breeding, transgenic breeding and molecular design breeding has become an important direction in the field of plant breeding. It is based on the combination of genotypic selection and phenotypic selection and thus target genes/alleles can be directly selected and pyramided. Therefore, the efficiency of molecular breeding can be improved and the breeding duration can be shortened. The paper defines the concept of molecular breeding, briefly analyzes current status and issues of crop molecular breeding in China, and discusses strategies in the future.

Abstract:The rapid development of molecular biology and molecular genetics, especially the increasingly perfection of gene cloning technology make it possible that molecular mechanism of plant development can be researched genetically. In the recent decade, great achievements were obtained and a new emerging branch of genetics-plant developmental genetics-was borne. Researches on plant developmental genetics become one of the most popular research fields in life science. A brief description of the following topics is introduced: (1) Historical background on emergence of plant developmental genetics. (2) Main contents and characteristics of development in higher plants. (3) Significance and prospects of plant developmental genetics.

Abstract:Over a decade,the Chinese government has attached great importance to the conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture(PGRFA).According to 20 priority fields described in the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture(GPA),the Chinese government has formulated and perfected a series of regulations and laws,meanwhile,the management for plant genetic resources has strengthened.Through training and popularization of scientific knowledge related to genetic resources,the public awareness has been promoted.By the international cooperation and establishment of collaborative networks,it has promoted the exchanges of information,prefessionals and materials.Through the implementation of various national programmes and projects,the conservation system for plant genetic resources has been established and improved gradually to achieve the objectives of safe conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources,which has played a great role in plant breeding and food security in both China and the world.(1)A systematic survey and cataloguing for main grain crops and wild species of crops has been undertaken.Totally 116 in situ conservation sites,including wild rice,wild soybean,wild relatives of wheat and wild vegetables etc.has been established.In addition,other 30 in situ conservation sites have been put in plan for construction.Rapid extinction of wild plant genetic resources has been controlled effectively.(2)China has established a long-term national genebank,one national duplication genebank,ten medium-term national gene banks,29 medium-term provincial genebanks and 32 national gemplasm nurseries(including two in vitro seedling banks).In addition,other seven germplasm nurseries are in building.Thus,a sound system for conservation of national plant genetic resources has been basically formed.Totally 3970673 accessions of plant genetic resources has been preserved in the long-term genebank and the germplasm nurseries.(3)A total of 286604 accessions of plant genetic resources were multiplied and regenerated in the past ten years,which has enriched the medium-term genebanks and significantly increased the distribution ability of plant genetic resources to breeders and researchers.Only in 2001-2007,132000 accessions of germplasm resources were provided to 2650 institutions in China.(4)With the investment of 180 million RMB from the State,the National Key Facility of Crop Gene Resources And Genetic Improvement was established in 2003,which provides a excellent platform for genotyping and gene discovery of plant genetic resources.(5)Through in-depth characterization and evaluation of plant genetic resources,a great number of elite germplasm have been screened out and used in the development of new plant varieties widely used in production,leading to the effective increase of the utilization efficiency of plant genetic resources.Meanwhile,through intercropping and rotation between different kinds of crops and mix-cropping of different varieties,the diversity of varieties has been conserved and the damages caused by diseases,pests and weeds have been reduced.(6)By strengthening the management for plant genetic resources,the objectives of sharing the plant genetic resources in the country and expanding the exchanges with foreign countries have been achieved,greatly contributing to food security in both China and the world,rapid development of national economy,and increase of the farmers' income.Although China has gained remarkable achievements in conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources,there still exist a number of challenges.China needs to strengthen the cooperation with other countries and international organizations,to acquire plant genetic resources and relevant technologies from abroad,to continue the survey,exploration and collecting of plant genetic resources,especially for wild plant genetic resources and landraces which are grown in remote areas of the country,to further establish and perfect conservation systems for plant genetic resources.Therefore,we should systemetically characterize and evaluate plant genetic resources conserved and provide them for the use.The sharing of genetic resources and benefits should be further improved to promote the utilization efficiency of genetic resources in China.

Abstract:The major approaches of molecular breeding are transgenic and marker-assisted selection breeding.In the present study,the biological base of molecular breeding of rice were stated from several aspects including yield,adaptability,quality,resistance and heterosis.Some important achievements were enumerated as molecular breeding of rice progressed.As a result of the sequencing of rice genome,map-based cloning of genes controlling the important agronomic traits,the gradually perfected transgenic technology,the rapid development of bioinformatics,and the development of software in simulating breeding,breeding by molecular design has increasingly become an important method of rice breeding.

Abstract:Plant science in China has been developing steadily in 2014 in that there is a rapid growth in the original and creative research papers. Chinese scientists have made significant contributions to insights into important plant scientific issues, such as the mechanism of strigolactone signaling transduction in rice, the regulation of rice metabolic hereditary, the genetic basis of rice male sterility, agronomy and the environmental biology. Researches on plant genomics exhibit multi-dimensional and integrative trends, spaning from function to evolution with diverse materials from model crops to cash crops. Significant progresses have been made on the responses of ecosystem carbon sink to global climate change. The achievements of plant sciences, especially in rice biology, in China have been drawn great attentions by the high impact journals including Nature. This review aims to provide an overall picture of plant science researches in China and highlights some of the important findings in 2014.

Abstract:Recent rapid progress in plant science and biotechnology in China demonstrates that China’s stronger support for funding in plant research and development (R&D) has borne fruit. Chinese groups have contributed major advances in a range of fields, such as rice biology, plant hormone and developmental biology, genomics and evolution, plant genetics and epigenetics, as well as plant biotechnology. Strigolactone studies including those identifying its receptor and dissecting its complex structure and signaling are representative of the recent researches from China at the forefront of the field. These advances are attributable in large part to interdisciplinary studies among scientists from plant science, chemistry, bioinformatics, structural biology, and agronomy. The platforms provided by national facilities facilitate this collaboration. As well, efficient restructuring of the top–down organization of state programs and free exploration of scientists’ interests have accelerated achievements by Chinese researchers. Here, we provide a general outline of China’s progress in plant R&D to highlight fields in which Chinese research has made significant contributions.

Abstract:During the past two decades, China has made great progress in tissue aid cell cultures of medicinal plants, this includes micropropagation, protoplast isolation and regeneration, and large scale cell suspension cultures. Recent development of plant transformation systems has offered a new approach to in vitro production of secondary metabolites. Hairy root cultures have been reported for a number of medicinal plant species, such as Artemisia annua that produces anti-malarial component artemisinin. Molecular cloning of key enzymes regulating the biosynthetic pathway and introduction of genes into medicinal plants has just started.

Abstract:Cytogenetics was established based on the "Chromosome theory of inheritance", proposed by Boveri and Sutton and evidenced by Morgan's lab in early stage of the 20 th centrary. With rapid development of related research areas, especially molecular genetics, cytogenetics developed from traditional into a new era, molecular cytogenetics in late 1960s. Featured by an established technique named DNA in situ hybridization (ISH), molecular cytogenetics has been applied in various research areas. ISH provids vivid and straightforward figures showing the virtual presence of DNA, RNA or proteins. In combination with genomics and cell biology tools, ISH and derived techniques have been widely used in studies of the origin, evolution, domestication of human, animal and plant, as well as wide hybridization and chromosome engineering. The physical location and order of DNA sequences revealed by ISH enables the detection of chromosomal re-arrangments among related species and gaps of assembled genome sequences. In addition, ISH using RNA or protein probes can reveal the location and quantification of transcripted RNA or translated protein. Since the 1970s, scientists from universities or institutes belonging to the Jiangsu Society of Genetics have initiated cytogenetics researches using various plant species. In recent years, research platforms for molecular cytogenetics have also been well established in Nanjing Agricultural University, Yangzhou University, Nanjing Forestry University, Jiangsu Xuhuai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Jiangsu Normal University. The application of molecular cytogenetics in plant evolution, wide hybridization, chromosome engineering, chromosome biology, genomics has been successful. Significant progresses have been achieved, both in basic and applied researches. In this paper, we will review main research progresses of plant cytogenetics in Jiangsu province, and discuss the potential development of this research area.

Like animals, plants possess a powerful innate immune system, which recognizes pathogenic organisms including viruses, bacteria, fungi, oomycetes, nematodes, insects and parasitic weeds to mount a series of defenses to fend off invading pathogens. Pathogens can evade or overcome host immune systems to cause diseases and damage on host plants. Over the last two decades, China has made great strides in plant immunity research and contributed significantly to multiple areas of studies. These advances shed new light on the development of effective technologies for sustainable control of pests in agriculture.

Abstract:Plant science in China continued to forge ahead in 2016, with a steady increase in number of original articles published in the top high-impact-factor international journals. Journals of Chinese plant science improved and entered the top three ranks of research journals in the world. Chinese scientists have made impressive and enviable achievements in many important field of plant science. The molecular genetics mechanism of heterosis in rice yield was included in the "Top 10 achievements in Chinese Science in 2016". The "Breakthrough of the year: The top 10 scientific achievements of life science in China in 2016" included studies on signaling between male and female gametophytes during fertilization in plants and the perception mechanism of the strigolactones receptor. Plant science in China, especially in the field of crop research, represented by rice science, is occurring in the international arena. For example, a series of significant advance has been made in rice genome resources and technology platform, resequencing, clone of rice functional genes and analysis of regulatory network(revealing the mechanism of disinhibition activation of strigolactones signal transduction, interpreting sterility hybrid between indica and japonica at molecular level and the mechanism of action of wide compatibility gene S5, finding a genomic loci of controlling cold tolerance of rice), leading the scientific research of rice and even crops in the world. In this review, we comment on the significant progress made in plant science in China in 2016, review the latest findings and hot events in plant science in 2016, and share the great achievements made by Chinese scientists.
