Abstract:Plant viruses are a group of intracellular pathogens that persistently threaten global food security. Significant advances in plant virology have been achieved by Chinese scientists over the last 20 years, including basic research and technologies for preventing and controlling plant viral diseases. Here, we review these milestones and advances, including the identification of new crop‐infecting viruses, dissection of pathogenic mechanisms of multiple viruses, examination of multilayered interactions among viruses, their host plants, and virus‐transmitting arthropod vectors, and in‐depth interrogation of plant‐encoded resistance and susceptibility determinants. Notably, various plant virus‐based vectors have also been successfully developed for gene function studies and target gene expression in plants. Abstract:Microbes in soil play pivotal roles in element turnover, plant health, pathogen control, and pollution degradation within agroecosystems. While theoretical studies highlight the link between soil functions and bacterial communities, the lack of metagenomic evidence hinders practical applications in agroecosystem management. In our study, we reconstructed 4,370 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) and 7,803 viral MAGs, revealing new insights into keystone microbes and their interactions with viruses. This work significantly advances our understanding of soil microbial dynamics and their impacts.

Abstract:Plant viruses transmitted by arthropods,as an important biotic factor,may not only directly affect the yield and quality of host plants,and development,physiological characteristics and ecological performances of their vector arthropods,but also directly or indirectly affect the non-vector herbivorous arthropods and their natural enemies in the same ecosystem,thereby causing influences to the whole agro-ecosystem. This paper reviewed the progress on the effects of plant viruses on herbivorous arthropods,including vector and non-vector,and their natural enemies,and on their ecological mechanisms to provide a reference for optimizing the management of vector and non-vector arthropod populations and sustainable control of plant viruses in agro-ecosystem.

Abstract:Virus is known as one of the smallest creatures in nature,its morphology and size can only be observed and identified by electron microscopy enlarging it by tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of times. The virus is strictly parasitic so that its growth and reproduction depend on the host cell. Plant viruses are an important part of the virus family. The plant virus disease,which affects the growth and development of plants and decreases the yield and quality,is increasingly serious year by year. Due to the numerous varieties of viruses and complex damage mechanisms,it is difficult to prevent and control the viral diseases. This article reviews the major methods of detecting plant virus as well as the technologies of virus-elimination and its application in recent years. Further,the article discusses the issues which need to be paid attention to in the virus-elimination. Finally,the article forecasts the future research direction for providing references and theoretical basis for further study.

Abstract:Plant immunology studies interactions between plants and pathogenic organisms. Like animals, plants possess a powerful innate immune system, which recognizes pathogenic organisms including viruses, bacteria, fungi, oomycetes, nematodes, insects and parasitic weeds to mount a series of defenses to fend off invading pathogens. Pathogens can evade or overcome host immune systems to cause diseases and damage on host plants. Over the last two decades, China has made great strides in plant immunity research and contributed significantly to multiple areas of studies. These advances shed new light on the development of effective technologies for sustainable control of pests in agriculture.

Abstract:There are many different kinds of crop pests widely distributed in China, which are very complex in occurrence and difficult in prevention and control. They may outbreak suddenly, causing serious damages to crops, and thereby have a significant impact on food security and safety. In the past 70 years, the development of basic research in plant protection in China has made great progress and profound changes, starting from simple agricultural intervention measures to current integrated, biologically-based and environment-friendly protection measures to effectively prevent and control crop pests. These measures are mainly dependent on the progress of innovation in the following fields: better understanding of the epidemic and migration patterns of major crop pests and diseases, elucidation on mechanisms for causing damages to crop by pests, discovery of novel technology and products for control of crop diseases and pests, and establishment of surveillance, early warning and control systems for management of crop pests. With the improvement of the scientific and technological progress in plant protection, the innovation of the future plant protection research will focus on discovery of new epidemic pattern for crop pests; establishment of effective pest detection, monitoring and early warning system; development of green and effective pesticides, biological control products. Thus, sustainable management of crop pests and disease could be reached at local, regional and global levels. In conclusion, development of a full-scale national plant protection technical support system would meet the requirements of the food security and safety and natural environment and contribute to the global Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract:With the rapid development of economic globalization, invasive species have become a far-reaching global issue. Impacts of invasive insects on agriculture, forestry, ecology, socio-economy and human health are becoming increasingly serious and cause for concern. In this paper, we introduce advances in theoretical and applied research on 14 invasive insects in China and summarize novel theory, methods and recent progress. Perspectives and directions for future research on invasive insects are discussed. The results provide new insights for the early warning, prevention, detection, monitoring, management, and control, of invasive insects.

Abstract:Cucumber mosaic virus(CMV),which is transmitted by over sixty species of aphids and infects over 1000 species of plants ,has been processing a gradual severity in the past fifteen years. It is now the severest crop virus in China. Climate warming has played an important role on this phenomenon. Relationship between the rampancy of cucumber mosaic virus and the climate waring was analyzed, and countermeasure of disease-management which depends on agricultural and biological control measures was put forward.

Abstract:Virus-induced gene silencing is regarded as a powerful and efficient tool for the analysis of gene function in plants because it is simple, rapid and transformation-free. It has been used to perform both forward and reverse genetics to identify plant functional genes. Many viruses have been developed into virus-induced gene silencing vectors and gene functions involved in development, biotic and abiotic stresses, metabolism, and cellular signaling have been reported. In this review, we discuss the development and application of virus-induced gene silencing in plant functional genomics.

Abstract:Abstract In China, soil-borne viruses transmitted by the root parasite Polymyxa graminis have caused significant yield loss in winter wheat for many years. At present, it is believed that two main soil-borne RNA viruses, namely wheat yellow mosaic virus (WYMV) and Chinese wheat mosaic virus (CWMV) are responsible for such losses. The molecular characteristics and infection processes of these two viruses have been intensively investigated and described substantially in detail, following the complete sequencing of their respective genomes. In this review, we highlight our recent findings on the distribution of WYMV and CWMV in China, the associated crop damage, the biological functions of WYMV and CWMV proteins as well as the viral temperature sensitivities. We also describe the characteristics of the resistance genes and discuss the novel virus–plant arms race strategies in hope of enlarging our understanding on the theme of virus-plant interactions. Finally, we compare current disease-management options and suggest the application of biotechnology-based genetic resistance to develop more cost-effective countermeasures for controlling soil-borne virus diseases in the future.
Biosecurity implications of new technology and discovery in plant virus research

Abstract:Human activity is causing new encounters between viruses and plants. Anthropogenic interventions include changing land use, decreasing biodiversity, trade, the introduction of new plant and vector species to native landscapes, and changing atmospheric and climatic conditions. The discovery of thousands of new viruses, especially those associated with healthy-appearing native plants, is shifting the paradigm for their role within the ecosystem from foe to friend. The cost of new plant virus incursions can be high and result in the loss of trade and/or production for short or extended periods. We present and justify three recommendations for plant biosecurity to improve communication about plant viruses, assist with the identification of viruses and their impacts, and protect the high economic, social, environmental, and cultural value of our respective nations' unique flora: 1) As part of the burden of proof, countries and jurisdictions should identify what pests already exist in, and which pests pose a risk to, their native flora; 2) Plant virus sequences not associated with a recognized virus infection are designated as "uncultured virus" and tentatively named using the host plant species of greatest known prevalence, the word "virus," a general location identifier, and a serial number; and 3) Invest in basic research to determine the ecology of known and new viruses with existing and potential new plant hosts and vectors and develop host-virus pathogenicity prediction tools. These recommendations have implications for researchers, risk analysts, biosecurity authorities, and policy makers at both a national and an international level.

Abstract:Plant science in China has been developing steadily in 2014 in that there is a rapid growth in the original and creative research papers. Chinese scientists have made significant contributions to insights into important plant scientific issues, such as the mechanism of strigolactone signaling transduction in rice, the regulation of rice metabolic hereditary, the genetic basis of rice male sterility, agronomy and the environmental biology. Researches on plant genomics exhibit multi-dimensional and integrative trends, spaning from function to evolution with diverse materials from model crops to cash crops. Significant progresses have been made on the responses of ecosystem carbon sink to global climate change. The achievements of plant sciences, especially in rice biology, in China have been drawn great attentions by the high impact journals including Nature. This review aims to provide an overall picture of plant science researches in China and highlights some of the important findings in 2014.

Abstract:Plants are persistently challenged by various phytopathogens. To protect themselves, plants have evolved multilayered surveillance against all pathogens. For intracellular parasitic viruses, plants have developed innate immunity, RNA silencing, translation repression, ubiquitination-mediated and autophagy-mediated protein degradation, and other dominant resistance gene-mediated defenses. Plant viruses have also acquired diverse strategies to suppress and even exploit host defense machinery to ensure their survival. A better understanding of the defense and counter-defense between plants and viruses will obviously benefit from the development of efficient and broad-spectrum virus resistance for sustainable agriculture. In this review, we summarize the cutting edge of knowledge concerning the defense and counter-defense between plants and viruses, and highlight the unexploited areas that are especially worth investigating in the near future.
