Abstract:By using the gas evaporation method, Zn line particles were prepared, whose average size was about 100 nm. By compacting these Zn particles under different pressures, three nano-structured Zn samples of 2 cm in diameter were produced. Using ultrasonic techniques, ultrasonic velocity and attenuation were measured in the samples in the frequency range from about 2 to 50 MHz.

Abstract:Pure zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO thin films were prepared via two step method. The crystal structure, topography, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and laser micro-Raman spectrometer. XRD, FE-SEM and XPS results indicated that Ag nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the zinc oxide nanorods. Ag nanoparticles on the zinc oxide nanorods would extend the photoabsorption region and reduce the electron transition from CB to VB. The photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO thin film could be effectively enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification. Under sunlight illumination, the photocurrent of the Ag-0.5/ZnO electrode was about three times as large as that of the zinc oxide electrode. The charge transfer process for the Ag/ZnO electrode under sunlight illumination has been discussed. With the increase of Ag content, the resistivity of the sample decreases sharply.

Abstract:An ultrasonic method for simultaneous determination of thickness, velocity, density and attenuation of thin layer using a time-resolved acoustic microscopy is proposed. Reflection from the thin layer is represented as a function of three dimensionless parameters which are determined from the experimentally normal incidence component of the two dimensional reflection spectrum R(θ,ω) derived based on the inversion of V(z,t) technique with time-resolved acoustic microscopy. The thickness of the thin layer is derived from the signals received from the layer itself considering the geometrical relations when the lens focused on the sample’s surfaces. The simultaneous determination of thickness, velocity, density and attenuation of thin stainless steel plate by using a point-focusing transducer with nominal frequency of around 50MHz were carried out. The determined material properties are comparable, in which the thickness, velocity and density can be measured with a percentage biases less than 5% and the attenuation is close to its real value. The present preliminary work shows the high efficiency, viability and capability of the new non-destructive technique in simultaneously characterize basic mechanical and geometrical properties of thin layers.

Abstract:A new method of synthesis Ag/Au core/shell nanostructure with ultraviolet (UV) excimer laser was studied. It was found Ag/Au core/shell nanostructures with spherical shell could be prepared by UV excimer laser which is obviously confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The surface plasma resonance of this nanostructure can be tuned by controlling thickness of the Au shell. Simulation based on Mie theory was in agreement with the result of the experiments. Moreover, it is indicated the Ag/Au core/shell nanostructure has excellent activity in surface-enhanced Raman scattering. This Ag/Au core/shell nanostructure may be applied to high sensitive trace detection in the future. (C) 2014 Laser Institute of America.

Abstract:The quantitative relationship between nanosecond pulsed laser parameters and the characteristics of laser-generated ultrasonic waves in polycrystalline materials was evaluated. The high energy of the pulsed laser with a large irradiation spot simultaneously generated ultrasonic longitudinal and shear waves at the epicenter under the slight ablation regime. An optimized denoising technique based on wavelet thresholding and variational mode decomposition was applied to reduce noise in shear waves with a low signal-to-noise ratio. An approach for characterizing grain size was proposed using spectral center frequency ratio (SCFR) based on time-frequency analysis. The results have demonstrated that the generation regime of ultrasonic waves is not solely determined by the laser power density; even at high power densities, a high energy with a large spot can generate an ultrasonic waveform dominated by the thermoelastic effect. It is ascribed to the intensification of the thermoelastic effect with the proportional increase in laser irradiation spot area for a given laser power density. Furthermore, both longitudinal and shear wave SCFRs are linearly related to grain size in polycrystalline materials; however, the shear wave SCFR is more sensitive to finer-grained materials. This study holds great significance for evaluating metal material properties using laser ultrasound.

Abstract:This paper presented an ultrasonic technique for simultaneous determination of the complete set of acoustical and geometrical properties of a layer embedded between two known materials using point-focus ultrasonic spectroscopy, which provides a high lateral resolution. The theoretical model of the two-dimensional spectrum Rt (θ, ω) of the layer is calculated as a function of six parameters of longitudinal and transverse velocities cl, ct, attenuation αl, αt, density ρ and thickness h, which fully determined the layer properties. The experimental spectrum Re (θ, ω) can be measured by V(z, t) technique. A two-step algorithm is presented to decompose the searching process of parameters from one six-dimensional to two three dimensional spaces. The sensitivity of the two-dimensional spectrum to individual properties and its stability against experimental noise are studied. The full set properties of a 250 μm thick stainless steel plate immersed in water are determined. The proposed technique used a point focus transducer, which makes the set-up simple and reliable. It allows measurement of the local properties of the layer and enables precision material characterization.

Abstract:For inspection of mechanical properties and integrity of critical components such as integrated circuits or composite materials by acoustic methodology, it is imperative to evaluate their acoustic reflection coefficients, which are in close correlation with the elastic properties, thickness, density, and attenuation and interface adhesion of these layered structures. An experimental method based on angular spectrum to evaluate the acoustic coefficient as a function of the incident angle, θ, and frequency, ω, is presented with high frequency time-resolved acoustic microscopy. In order to achieve a high spatial resolution for evaluation of thin plates with thicknesses about one or two wavelengths, a point focusing transducer with a nominal center frequency of 25 MHz is adopted. By measuring the V(z, t) data in pulse mode, the reflection coefficient, R(θ, ω), can be reconstructed from its two-dimensional spectrum. It brings simplicity to experimental setup and measurement procedure since only single translation of the transducer in the vertical direction is competent for incident angle and frequency acquisition. It overcomes the disadvantages of the conventional methods requiring the spectroscopy for frequency scanning and/or ultrasonic goniometer for angular scanning. Two substrates of aluminum and Plexiglas and four stainless plates with various thicknesses of 100 μm, 150 μm, 200 μm, and 250 μm were applied. The acoustic reflection coefficients are consistent with the corresponding theoretical calculations. It opened the way of non-destructive methodology to evaluate the elastic and geometrical properties of very thin multi-layers structures simultaneously.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a non-contact and quantitative method to evaluate the permittivity of semiconductor nanomaterials. A microwave atomic force microscopy (M-AFM) was used to obtain the topography and microwave images of nanomaterials in one scanning process. Morphology and microwave images of ZnO and CuO nanowires, and SnO2 nanobelts with high spatial resolution were obtained in the non-contact mode of M-AFM. The local relative permittivity of these one-dimensional metal oxide nanomaterials was quantitatively evaluated.

Abstract:ZnO nanoarrays (ZNAs)and tin-doped ZnO nanorod arrays(ZNAs∶Sn)were synthesized by hydro-thermal method on seeded catalyst layer prepared by spin coating method.The effect of Sn doping in ZnO nano-rod arrays (ZNAs)was investigated by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,optical transmittance spectra and ellipsometer,and the Bruggeman effective medium approximation (EMA)theory was employed to model porous columnar structures of ZNAs to acquire the optical constants of our samples.Compared with the pure ZNAs,the ZNAs∶Sn have a higher transmittance at the wavelength range 300-800 nm.Calculating with the global standard spectrum (AM1.5),the 5% doped ZNAs∶Sn has the highest energy of transmission at the wavelength 300-800 nm,which is 1.6 times as the value that the pure ZNAs has.

Abstract:A tensile technique was developed and coupled with in-situ transmission electron microscopy observations to directly characterize the crack propagation mechanism in sputter-deposited, ultra-thin, freestanding nanocrystalline Ag thin films with a thickness of 60nm. The developed technique directly revealed the fracture mechanism; the thin film with nanoscale grains exhibits ductile fracture behavior, and the crack propagates through void nucleation, growth, and coalescence ahead of the crack tip. A model for the energy release rate during the propagation of nanovoids was established to quantitatively characterize the equilibrium length of the voids. Based on experimental measurements and theoretical calculations, the effects of stress distribution and energy transformation on the nucleation position, equilibrium length, and growth rate of the nanovoids are discussed.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser-excited acoustic vibrations of single gold nanorods and nanospheres in water and vacuum have been studied using the finite element and atomistic simulations, for the individual intrinsic and fluid damping rates of vibrations of nanoparticles. It is shown that the damping of the extensional vibration of gold nanorods in water mainly results from the dissipation by the water. For the breathing mode of gold nanorods and nanospheres in water, both fluid damping and intrinsic dissipation account for the damping of nanoparticles, with more significant fluid damping effect. Further simulations for gold nanorods with different truncated tips demonstrate that the damping of the breathing mode of nanorods is sensitive to the sizes of truncated rod tips, which could be one of mechanisms for the experimentally observed large particle-to-particle variations of breathing quality factors of gold nanorods.

Abstract:A novel method to correct diffraction effect in measurement of ultrasonic velocity and attenuation at high frequencies is developed by using the superposition technique of Gaussian beams. To examine the validity of this numerical approach, the amplitude loss and phase advance due to the diffraction effect for an SiO2 specimen are numerically calculated in 30-240MHz, and the results are in good agreement with those by the Papadakis method.

Abstract:ZnO nanomaterials have been widely used in micro/nano devices and structure due to special mechanical/electrical properties, and its characterization is still deficient and challenging. In this paper, ZnO nanomaterials, including nanorod and nanowire are characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM) and nanomanipulator embedded in scanning electron microscope (SEM) respectively, which can manipulate and observe simultaneously, and is efficient and cost effective. Surface morphology and mechanical properties were observed by AFM. Results showed that the average Young’s modulus of ZnO nanorods is 1.40 MPa and the average spring rate is 0.08 N/m. Electrical properties were characterized with nanomanipulator, which showed that the ZnO nanomaterial have cut-off characteristics and good schottky contact with the tungsten probes. A two-probe strategy was proposed for piezoelectric property measurement, which is easy to operate and adaptable to multiple nanomaterials. Experiments showed maximum voltage of a single ZnO nanowire is around 0.74 mV. Experiment criteria for ZnO manipulation and characterization were also studied, such as acceleration voltage, operation duration, sample preparation. Our work provides useful references for nanomaterial characterization and also theoretical basis for nanomaterials application.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline ZnO films with strong (0002) texture and fine grains were deposited onto ultra-nanocrystalline diamond (UNCD) layers on silicon using high target utilization sputtering technology. The unique characteristic of this sputtering technique allows room temperature growth of smooth ZnO films with a low roughness and low stress at high growth rates. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices were fabricated on ZnO/UNCD structure and exhibited good transmission signals with a low insertion loss and a strong side-lobe suppression for the Rayleigh mode SAW. Based on the optimization of the layered structure of the SAW device, a good performance with a coupling coefficient of 5.2% has been realized, promising for improving the microfluidic efficiency in droplet transportation comparing with that of the ZnO/Si SAW device. An optimized temperature coefficient of frequency of −23.4 ppm °C−1 was obtained for the SAW devices with the 2.72 µm-thick ZnO and 1.1 µm-thick UNCD film. Significant thermal effect due to the acoustic heating has been redcued which is related to the temperature stability of the ZnO/UNCD SAW device.

Abstract:<p>A novel method is proposed for quantitative characterization of cracks by laser ultrasound. It is found that cracks with different depth will have different feedbacks to sound waves based on crack closure effect, energy loss theory and resonance phenomenon. Therefore, damage sensitive characteristic parameters can be extracted from the acoustic waves and used to quantitatively characterize the crack size, including the waveform duration, the reflection energy coefficient and frequency spectral area. In this paper, cracks with gradient depth are used as experimental objects, and the relevant data is obtained through simulation and experiments. The defects are positioned, and the positioning error is less than 3%. The study found that as the crack depth increases, the waveform duration and the reflection energy coefficient gradually decrease, and the frequency spectral area first increases and then decreases. When the crack depth is larger than 0.9mm, characteristic parameters tend to be fixed values. When the crack depth is 0.5mm-0.7mm, abrupt phenomena occurred in both the reflection energy coefficient and the frequency spectrum area due to resonance phenomenon. By analyzing the corresponding relationship between damage sensitivity characteristic parameters and depth, the ability of laser ultrasonic quantitative measurement can be improved.</p>

Analysis of SAW properties in ZnO/AlxGa1-xN/c-Al2O3 structures

Abstract:Piezoelectric thin films on high acoustic velocity nonpiezoelectric substrates, such as ZnO, AlN, or GaN deposited on diamond or sapphire substrates, are attractive for high frequency and low-loss surface acoustic wave devices. In this work, ZnO films are deposited on AlxGa1-xN/c-Al2O3 (0 < or = chi < or = 1) substrates using the radio frequency (RF) sputtering technique. In comparison with a single AlxGa1-xN layer deposited on c-Al2O3 with the same total film thickness, a ZnO/AlxGa1-xN/c-Al2O3 multilayer structure provides several advantages, including higher order wave modes with higher velocity and larger electromechanical coupling coefficient (K2). The surface acoustic wave (SAW) velocities and coupling coefficients of the ZnO/AlxGa1-xN/c-Al2O3 structure are tailored as a function of the Al mole percentage in AlxGa1-xN films, and as a function of the ZnO (h1) to AlxGa1-xN (h2) thickness ratio. It is found that a wide thickness-frequency product (hf) region in which coupling is close to its maximum value, K(2)max, can be obtained. The K(2)max of the second order wave mode (h1 = h2) is estimated to be 4.3% for ZnO/GaN/c-Al2O3, and 3.8% for ZnO/AlN/c-Al2O3. The bandwidth of second and third order wave modes, in which the coupling coefficient is within +/- 0.3% of K(2)max, is calculated to be 820 hf for ZnO/GaN/c-Al2O3, and 3620 hf for ZnO/AlN/c-Al2O3. Thus, the hf region in which the coupling coefficient is close to the maximum value broadens with increasing Al content, while K(2)max decreases slightly. When the thickness ratio of AlN to ZnO increases, the K(2)max and hf bandwidth of the second and third higher wave modes increases. The SAW test devices are fabricated and tested. The theoretical and experimental results of velocity dispersion in the ZnO/AlxGa1-xN/c-Al2O3 structures are found to be well matched.

Abstract:We present a straightforward method for determining the crystalline coherence length (Dc) of ZnO-based systems with long-range order in the scale of tens of nanometers. The equation proposed enables calculating Dc simply by taking the intensities of two peaks of a Raman measurement. For ZnO-based systems with typical range order at the nanoscale, the relative intensities of the Raman peaks are strongly dependent on the laser wavelength used as excitation. The development of this methodology, which can be applied to measurements taken with most of the visible lasers available for Raman experiments, was only achieved through the combination of thorough Raman analyses and the possibility of production of ZnO system with well-controlled crystalline domain size using mechanical processing in high-energy milling. A significant competitive advantage stands out in the fact that Raman spectra are very sensitive even to slight structural modifications that are below the detection limit of conventional characterization techniques, such as X-rays diffraction, and the versatile and easy way of performing in-situ analyses, in addition to the possibility to take measurements with microscopic spatial resolution without the demand for large X-ray sources or synchrotron environments.

Abstract:Based on the near-field optical theory, the near-field characteristics of Ag nanoparticle within the near-field scope of a metallic AFM tip irradiated by optical fiber probe laser are carried out with finite element method. As the laser transmits in optical fiber probe, the light of the various modes is gradually turned off, remaining the HE11 mode laser. Meanwhile, the evanescent field can be produced at the confined aperture, which will also stimulate the near-field enhancement phenomenon of metallic AFM tip and Ag nanoparticle with those extrema appearing in the apex of AFM tip, the upper and lower parts of Ag nanoparticle, and the upper and lower sharp boundary positions at the end of the tapered fiber probe. The related mechanism is revealed and near-field optical characteristics are also analyzed.
