Abstract:In this work, large-scale hybrid atomistic-macroscale simulation is performed to study the long-time material behavior in nanosecond laser–material interaction. Different phase change phenomena are studied, including solid–liquid interface speed, temperature, maximum melting depth, and ablation rate. Full solidification/epitaxial re-growth is observed within 60ns for the laser fluence of 5J/m2. Strong fluctuation is observed at the solid–liquid interface and surface of the molten pool. No visible super-heating is observed at the solid–liquid interface. For the laser fluences studied in this work, an almost linear relationship is observed between the ablation yield and the laser fluence, indicating weak phase explosion.

Abstract:Ultrafast nonthermal ablation of gold nanofilms is studied using a combined two-temperature model and molecular dynamics method. The results show that for thinner films the tensile stress is directly reversed from the initially generated compressive stress. For thicker films, on the other hand, the tensile stress wave is reflected from the irradiated surface. The key driving force for ultrafast nonthermal material ablation is conventional thermal stress, instead of the hot electron blast force.

Abstract:A hybrid numerical method that couples molecular dynamics (MD) with material point method (MPM) for atomistic simulations of thermomechanical responses of metals irradiated by ultrafast lasers is developed. In this coupled MD-MPM method, the MPM is used for the non-Fourier heat conduction in the electron subsystem of the heated metallic targets, and the lattice responses of the metals are described by the MD method with the inclusion of additional damping forces accounting for the energy transfer between the electrons and the lattice. The MD atoms are partitioned based on their topological relation with the MPM background grid and the MPM model for the electron subsystem are built with respect to the grouped atoms. The validity and robustness of the proposed MD-MPM scheme have been demonstrated through the representative examples for femto-/picosecond laser heating of metal thin films in one and two dimensions. Due to the inherent nature of the MPM, the presented MD-MPM algorithm could better handle the large deformations involved in the heated metals and be used for modeling the heating of metals by a wider range of ultrafast laser pulses as compared to the procedure combining the MD with the mesh-based methods.

Abstract:Abstract The coupling of excited states and ionic dynamics is the basic and challenging point for the materials response at extreme conditions. In the laboratory, the intense laser produces transient nature and complexity with highly nonequilibrium states, making it extremely difficult and interesting for both experimental measurements and theoretical methods. With the inclusion of laser-excited states, we extend an ab initio method into the direct simulations of whole laser-driven microscopic dynamics from solid to liquid. We construct the framework of combining the electron-temperature-dependent deep neural-network potential energy surface with a hybrid atomistic-continuum approach, controlling non-adiabatic energy exchange and atomistic dynamics, which enables consistent interpretation of experimental data. By large-scale ab initio simulations, we demonstrate that the nonthermal effects introduced by hot electrons play a dominant role in modulating the lattice dynamics, thermodynamic pathway, and structural transformation. We highlight that the present work provides a path to realistic computational studies of laser-driven processes, thus bridging the gap between experiments and simulations.

Abstract:In recent years, short pulsed laser materials interaction has attracted considerable attention owing to the rapid development of short pulsed lasers and their potential applications in laser-material processing. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are conducted to study the thermal and thermomechanical phenomena induced by picosecond laser heating. The generation and propagation of the stress wave are calculated and depicted in detail. Results of the MD simulation are compared with those obtained with an analytical solution. In addition, a temperature wave as a result of the coupling between temperature and the strain rate is observed, which propagates at the same speed as the stress wave.

Abstract:Ablation and spallation of gold thin films by an ultrashort laser pulse are simulated by using an integrated two-temperature model and molecular dynamics method with inclusion of the hot electron blast force. The simulation results show that the ultrafast laser-induced nonthermal ablation and spallation both are essentially due to dynamic tensile stress that exceeds the local material strength. It is also demonstrated that a simultaneous use of femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses could induce spallation without causing undesired front-side damage to the film. This may be suited to peel an ultrathin film (1 μm in thickness or less) from its substrate or to improve the material removal rate of precise laser processing.

Abstract:A numerical method coupling the molecular dynamics and the two-step energy transfer model is presented for simulating ultrafast responses of semiconductors irradiated by ultrashort-pulsed lasers. In this method, an additional damping force characterizing the carrier-lattice heat exchange is added to the equations of motion of atoms in the molecular dynamics. The explicit finite difference algorithms are applied for obtaining the laser energy distribution and the carrier density evolution, whereas a semi-implicit finite difference scheme is developed as for the carrier temperature field. Examples of a thin silicon film subjected to femtosecond laser heating are utilized to validate and demonstrate this hybrid method. Results show that the proposed method is able to effectively describe not only the thermal transport but also the thermal stress wave in the ultrafast laser–semiconductor interactions.

Abstract:During pulsed laser-assisted manufacturing, the extremely high-temperature gradient in space will lead to very high-stress waves that play a critical role in structuring. Both shear and normal stress waves emerge in space. This work provides a review and perspective based on our past work spanning theoretical analysis, 1D molecular dynamics (MD) modeling, 3D MD modeling, and experimental characterization. Discussions are given on the non-Fourier effect during ultrafast laser-material interaction, stress-induced structural defects in recrystallization, and ablation confinement by ambient gas and nanotip during nanotip-assisted near-field nanomanufacturing. The presence of stress waves in space could cause permanent and temporary damages, and these damages are more caused by the shear stresses than the normal ones where the compressive component usually is much stronger than the tensile part. Due to the fact of very fast stress waves propagation and slow cooling and solidification, it is very challenging to conduct MD modeling of the entire domain even using stage-of-the-art parallel computation. Hybrid modeling that combines MD and macroscale modelings provides a better choice to tackle this problem. Time-resolved ultrafast temperature and stress characterization are still highly needed to provide deep physics understanding of laser-material interaction toward process control and optimization.

Abstract:The ablation mechanism of solids due to a short laser pulse energy deposition is a complex phenomenon, which depends on both the laser input parameters and the material properties. In particular, when moving toward pico-second and even femto-second pulses, the irradiated material can be driven to extreme conditions, when its properties are not strictly defined and a number of transient inter-related processes determining a further material’s evolution are occurring simultaneously on the nanoscale. Some of the processes were successfully studied experimentally and resulted in numerous publications. The difficulties of the experimental measurements, however, and often the impossibility to isolate those processes for their detailed study, make theoretical investigation beneficial. Here, we are targeting the determination of the working ablation regimes in technological terms of quality and production. The utilized atomistic–continuum model combines the advantages of the molecular dynamics method in description of the laser-induced non-equilibrium phase transition processes at atomic level with the ability of the two temperature model in the continuum description of the photo-excited free carrier’s dynamics. On the example of Al and Au metal targets, the model is applied to study the ablation regimes induced with laser irradiation of different fluences and pulse durations. The obtained photo-thermal and photo-mechanical modes are related with quality and production terms from the point of industrial applications.

Abstract:Ultrafast thermomechanical responses of silicon thin films due to ultrashort-pulsed laser irradiation were investigated using an atomic-level hybrid method coupling the molecular dynamics and the ultrafast two-step energy transport model. The dynamic reflectivity and absorption were considered, and the effects of laser fluence and pulse duration on the thermomechanical response were studied. It was found that both the carrier temperature and number density rapidly increase to their maximum while the lattice temperature rises at a much slower rate. The ultrafast laser heating could induce a strong stress wave in the film, with the maximum compressive and tensile stress occurring near the front and back surfaces, respectively. For laser pulses of the same duration, the higher the laser fluence is, the higher the carrier temperature and density and lattice temperature are induced. For the same laser fluence, a longer pulse generally produces lower carrier density and temperatures and weaker stress shock strength. However, for the fluence of 0.2 J/cm(2), the lowest lattice temperature was simulated for a 100-fs pulse compared to the 1-ps and 5-ps pulses, due to the increase of reflectivity by high carrier density. It is also shown that the optical properties as functions of lattice temperature usually employed are not suited for modeling ultrafast laser interactions with silicon materials.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser ablation is a process that bears both fundamental physics interest and has wide industrial applications. For decades, the lack of probes on the relevant time and length scales has prevented access to the highly nonequilibrium phase decomposition processes triggered by laser excitation. Enabled by the unprecedented intense femtosecond X-ray pulses delivered by an X-ray free electron laser, we report here results of time-resolved small angle scattering measurements on the dynamics of nanoscale phase decomposition in thin gold films upon femtosecond laser-induced ablation. By analyzing the features imprinted onto the small angle diffraction patterns, the transient heterogeneous density distributions within the ablation plume as obtained from molecular dynamics simulations get direct experimental confirmation.

Abstract:With the rapid development in advanced industries, such as microelectronics and optics sectors, the functional feature size of devises/components has been decreasing from micro to nanometric, and even atomic and close-to-atomic scale (ACS) for higher performance, smaller volume and lower energy consumption. By this time, a great many quantum structures are proposed, with not only an extreme scale of several or even single atom, but also a nearly ideal lattice structure with no material defect. It is almost no doubt that such structures play critical role in the next generation products, which shows an urgent demand for the atomic and close-to-atomic scale manufacturing (ACSM). Laser machining is one of the most important approaches widely used in engineering and scientific research. It is high-efficient and applicable for most kinds of materials. Moreover, the processing scale covers a huge range from millimeters to nanometers, and has already touches the atomic level. Laser-material interaction mechanism, as the foundation of laser machining, determines the machining accuracy and surface quality. It becomes much more sophisticated and dominant with a decrease in processing scale, which is systematically reviewed in this article. In general, the mechanisms of laser-induced material removal are classified into ablation, Coulomb explosion and atomic desorption, with a decrease in the scale from above microns to angstroms. The effects of processing parameters on both fundamental material response and machined surface quality are discussed, as well as theoretical methods to simulate and understand the underlying mechanisms. Examples at nanometric to atomic scale are provided, which demonstrate the capability of laser machining in achieving the ultimate precision and becoming a promising approach to ACSM.

Abstract:In order to understand transient thermal processes in a thin aluminum foil subjected to a short high power laser pulse, molecular dynamics simulations were performed, applying the Monte Carlo method to laser irradiation. Melting and evaporation occur within the region where the laser energy was deposited. A high temperature region generated firstly at the interface by laser irradiation propagates through the substrate under the melt depth as a shock wave. In this paper, we will clarify the mechanism from a microscopic view and discuss the effect of the shock wave in a solid. The reason why the thermal shock wave propagate within a solid without damping the velocity can be explained by the existence of compressive precursor. Finally, to reconsider the validation of laser model with energy carrier, we attempted to modify laser model and compared it with original model.

Abstract:A simplified two-temperature model coupling molecular dynamics (TTM-MD) method is proposed to study the femtosecond laser ablation of metal, which can simulate a micron-sized laser spot irradiation under the premise of atomic-level calculation accuracy. The theoretical TTM-MD model is re-derived using the Langevin equation to reduce the calculation frequency of lattice temperature and improve the solution efficiency. Then, the TTM-MD simulation model is simplified to a one-dimensional model according to the rotational symmetry of laser spot and neglecting the lateral heat transfer. The temperature variation, pressure evolution, and void nucleation are analyzed to reveal the spallation and explosion ablation regimes. The variation of simulated ablation depth with laser fluence is consistent with the experimental results. The full-sized crater profiles predicted by this simplified model also match well with the ablation experiments irradiated by the Gaussian laser spot. Moreover, the step boundary caused by the threshold effect of laser ablation also can be captured on the crater edge. These results suggest that the proposed model provides essential insight into the femtosecond laser ablation by avoiding the limitation of current computing power.

Abstract:The femtosecond laser ablation of metals is a complex and violent non-equilibrium process, and numerous studies seek to reveal the evolution of a single physical phenomenon, such as laser-induced periodical surface micro-nano structures or plasma eruptions. By taking the multi-physics scenarios of energy and heat transfer, structural mechanics, hydrodynamics and nucleation dynamics into account, a femto-nanosecond and nano-micrometre multiscale framework combining electron-phonon-coupled heat transfer, lattice deformation, phase transition and plasma eruption are constructed to describe the heat and mass transfer mechanism of the femtosecond laser-copper interaction. A multiphysics model was proposed in the research to simulate the ablation process with different laser fluence. Ablation takes place at low near-threshold fluences primarily via a combination of the thermal phase transition process of melting and thermoplastic deformation coupled with the nonthermal phase transition process of hot electrons explosion. Marangoni convection and ununiform nucleation at the solid-liquid interface create micro-nano structures on the surface of the ablation crater. In high laser fluence, plasma plumes are emitted via gasification and eruption, as the material is heated to decrease its density, the surface is broken into a micro-columns structure, and then the micro-columns fracture and erupt to form the micro-nano structures and plasma plumes. The numerical results offer a better understanding of the surface topography modifications and plasma plume evolution and promote the application of femtosecond laser precision fabrication in the field of aviation, mechanics, electronics and materials engineering.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser material processing has received significant attention due to a growing need for the fabrication of miniaturized devices at micro- and nanoscales. The traditional phenomenological laws, such as Fourier's law of heat conduction, are challenged in the microscale regime and a hyperbolic or dual phase lag model should be employed. During ultrafast laser interaction with metal, the electrons and lattices are not in equilibrium. Various two-temperature models that can be used to describe the nonequilibrium heat transfer are presented. A semi-classical two-step heating model to investigate thermal transport in metals caused by ultrashort laser heating is also presented. The main difference between the semiclassical and the phenomenological two-temperature models is that the former includes the effects of electron drifting, which could result in significantly different electron and lattice temperature response from the latter for higher-intensity and shorter-pulse laser heating. Under higher laser fluence and/or short pulse, the lattice temperature can exceed the melting point and melting takes place. The liquid phase will be resolidified when the lattice is cooled by conducting heat away. Ultrafast melting and resolidification of the thin gold film and microparticles were investigated. At even shorter pulse width, femtosecond laser heating on metals produces a blasting force from hot electrons in the sub-picosecond domain, which exerts on the metal lattices along with the non-equilibrium heat flow. Our work that employs the parabolic two-step heating model to study the effect of the hot-electron blast in multi-layered thin metal films is also presented.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, a comprehensive finite element (FE) simulation model of the heat transfer for laser ablation of a single crystalline diamond (SCD) with a scanning laser beam in Gaussian shape is developed. The model takes into account the material properties, the geometric structure, and the thermal boundary conditions. It is employed to study the dependence of the temperature distribution under varying laser machining parameters. The distribution characteristics of the temperature field, the temperature evolution, and the heat conduction on the diamond surface are obtained, analyzed, and discussed. The law describing the influence of the laser parameters on the temperature field on the diamond surface is established. After comparing the numerically estimated thermal penetration depth of the pulsed laser in the diamond with the experimentally ablated groove characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a white light interferometer (WLI) and the Raman spectroscopy analysis of the deposited metamorphic layer, it is found that the developed model shows an excellent predictive capability and provides a promising tool for the future optimization of the machining parameters.</p>

Abstract:Thermodynamics effects generated by nanosecond pulsed-laser ablation are very important. In this work, a new ablation model of targets considering vaporization is first built based on superheated theory. Four different heat flux equations for during and after the laser radiation are then presented. Finally, as an example of Si target, a finite difference method is employed to simulate the space-and time-dependence of temperature in the target. The dependence of solid–liquid interface location on time which takes account of the melting relaxation time is derived. The comparison of the present model to our new model shows that vaporization plays an important role during and after the radiation of laser. Superheated liquid layer after the laser radiation will exist for a long period. This work will offer help for the future investigation of thin films prepared by nanosecond pulsed laser.
