Abstract:The exact monotone twist map of infinite cylinders in the Birkhoff region of instability is studied. A Variational method based on Aubry-Mather theory is used to discover infinitely many non-Birkhoff periodic orbits of fixed rotation number sufficiently close to some irrational number for which the angular invariant circle does not exist.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that in any analytic one-parameter family of twist maps of the annulus, homotopically invariant curves filled with periodic points corresponding to a given rotation number, either exist for all values of the parameters or at most for a discrete subset. Moreover, we show that the set of analytic twist maps having such an invariant curve of a given rotation number is a strict analytic subset of the set of analytic twist maps. The first result extends, in dimension 2, a previous result by Arnaud, Massetti and Sorrentino. We then apply our result to rational caustics of billiards, considering several models such as Birkhoff billiards, outer billiards and symplectic billiards.

The Bernoulli property for counter-twisting linked twist maps

Abstract:We prove the Bernoulli property for a class of counter-twisting linked twist maps. These compose orthogonal linear shears on the torus, orientated in the opposite sense to their co-twisting counterparts (where the shears reinforce one another). Compared to previous studies we focus on the parameter space corresponding to weak shears, near the critical parameter below which hyperbolicity is lost and the map is non-mixing. The approach developed to deal with this situation appears applicable to a broad range of non-uniformly hyperbolic examples.

Abstract:Topological invariants such as winding numbers and linking numbers appear as charges of topological solitons in diverse nonlinear physical systems described by a unit vector field defined on two and three dimensional manifolds. While the Gauss-Bonnet theorem shows that the Euler characteristic (a topological invariant) can be written as the integral of the Gaussian curvature (an intrinsic geometric quantity), the intriguing question of whether winding and linking numbers can also be expressed similarly as integrals of some intrinsic geometric quantities has not been addressed in the literature. In this paper we provide the answer by showing that for the winding number in two dimensions, these quantities are torsions of the two evolving space curves describing the manifold. On the other hand, in three dimensions we find that in addition to torsions, intrinsic twists of the space curves are necessary to obtain a nontrivial winding number and linking number. These new results arise from the hitherto unknown connections that we establish between these topological invariants and the corresponding appropriately normalized global anholonomies (i.e., geometric phases) associated with the unit vector fields on the respective manifolds. An application of our results to a 3D Heisenberg ferromagnetic model supporting a topological soliton is also presented.

Abstract:In this article we study the fragility of Lagrangian periodic tori for symplectic twist maps of the $2d$-dimensional annulus and prove a rigidity result for completely integrable ones. More specifically, we consider $1$-parameter families of symplectic twist maps $(f_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon\in \mathbb{R}}$, obtained by perturbing the generating function of an analytic map $f$ by a family of potentials $\{\varepsilon G\}_{\varepsilon\in \mathbb{R}}$. Firstly, for an analytic $G$ and for $(m,n)\in \mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{N}^*$ with $m$ and $n$ coprime, we investigate the topological structure of the set of $\varepsilon\in \mathbb{R}$ for which $f_\varepsilon$ admits a Lagrangian periodic torus of rotation vector $(m,n)$. In particular we prove that, under a suitable non-degeneracy condition on $f$, this set consists of at most finitely many points. Then, we exploit this to deduce a rigidity result for integrable symplectic twist maps, in the case of deformations produced by a $C^2$ potential. Our analysis, which holds in any dimension, is based on a thorough investigation of the geometric and dynamical properties of Lagrangian periodic tori, which we believe is of its own interest.

Abstract:We investigate the total CR twist functional on transversal curves in the standard CR 3-sphere $\mathrm S^3 \subset \mathbb C^2$. The question of the integration by quadratures of the critical curves and the problem of existence and properties of closed critical curves are addressed. A procedure for the explicit integration of general critical curves is provided and a characterization of closed curves within a specific class of general critical curves is given. Experimental evidence of the existence of infinite countably many closed critical curves is provided.

Abstract:We propose a twist condition, inspired by the classical Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem on area-preserving maps of the annulus, which applies to asymptotically linear Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of linear phase space. When an asymptotically linear Hamiltonian diffeomorphism, non-degenerate and unitary at infinity, satisfies this twist condition, we show that it has infinitely many periodic points.

Abstract:Cosmological theories for the origin and evolution of structure in the Universe are highly predictive of the form of the angular power spectrum of cosmic microwave background fluctuations. We present new results from a comprehensive study of CMB observations which provide the first measurements of the power spectrum all the way down to angular scales of ~10 arcminutes. On large scales a joint likelihood analysis of the COBE and Tenerife data fixes the power spectrum normalisation to be Q_rms = 21.0 +/- 1.6 uK for an initially scale invariant spectrum of fluctuations. The combined data are consistent with this hypothesis, placing a limit of n=1.3 +/- 0.3 on the spectral slope. On intermediate scales we find clear evidence for a `Doppler' peak in the power spectrum localised in both angular scale and amplitude. This first estimate of the angular position of the peak is used to place a new direct limit on the curvature of the Universe, corresponding to a density of Omega=0.7^{+1.0}_{-0.4}. Very low density open Universe models are inconsistent with this limit unless there is a significant contribution from a cosmological constant.

Abstract:We determine the Hofer-Zehnder capacity for twisted tangent bundles over closed surfaces for (i) arbitrary constant magnetic fields on the two-sphere and (ii) strong constant magnetic fields for higher genus surfaces. On $S^2$ we further give an explicit $\text{SO}(3)$-equivariant compactification of the twisted tangent bundle to $S^2\times S^2$ with split symplectic form. The former is the phase space of a charged particle moving on the two-sphere in a constant magnetic field, the latter is the configuration space of two massless coupled angular momenta.

Abstract:In this work we consider variational properties of exact symplectic twist maps $T$ that act on the cotangent bundle of a torus, or on a ball bundle over a sphere. An example of such a map is the well-known Birkhoff billiard map corresponding to smooth convex hypersurfaces. In this work we will focus on the important class $\mathcal{M}$ of orbits of $T$ which are locally maximizing with respect to the variational principle associated with a generating function of the symplectic twist map. Our first goal is to give geometric and variational characterization for orbits in the class $\mathcal M$. The billiard map is known to have two different generating functions, which brings forth a natural question: to compare the properties of these two generating functions. While our motivation comes from billiards, we will work in general, and assume that a general twist map $T$ has two generating functions. Thus we consider the orbits of $T$ which are locally maximizing with respect to either of the generating functions. We formulate a geometric criterion that guarantees that two generating functions of the same twist map have the same class of locally maximizing orbits, and we will show that the two generating functions for the Birkhoff billiard map do, in fact, satisfy this criterion. The proof of this last property will rely on the Sinai-Chernov formula from geometric optics and billiard dynamics.

Abstract:Let (X,I,J,K) be a compact hypercomplex manifold, i.e. a smooth manifold X with an action of the quaternion algebra (Id,I,J,K) on the tangent bundle TX, inducing integrable almost complex structures. For any $(a, b, c) \in S^2$, the linear combination $L := aI + bJ + cK$ defines another complex structure on X. This results in a $C P^1$-family of complex structures called the twistor family. Its total space is called the twistor space. We show that the twistor space of a compact hypercomplex manifold is never Moishezon and, moreover, it is never Fujiki class C (in particular, never Kahler and never projective).

Effective transport barriers in the biquadratic nontwist map

Abstract:Nontwist area-preserving maps violate the twist condition at specific orbits, resulting in shearless invariant curves that prevent chaotic transport. Plasmas and fluids with nonmonotonic equilibrium profiles may be described using nontwist systems, where even after these shearless curves breakdown, effective transport barriers persist, partially reducing transport coefficients. Some nontwist systems present multiple shearless curves in phase space, increasing the complexity of transport phenomena, which have not been thoroughly investigated until now. In this work, we examine the formation of effective transport barriers in a nontwist area-preserving mapping with multiple shearless transport barriers. By quantifying the effectiveness of each transport barrier in phase space, we identified two scenarios where particular barriers dominate over others. Our results also reveal configurations where the interplay of two transport barriers creates regions in phase space with significant orbit trapping, thereby influencing the overall transport dynamics.
