Abstract:The development and application of chalcogenide glasses has been impeded generally by their lower strength due to the weaker bonding of chalcogenide glasses and the influence of impurities on the transparency of the glass. In the present study a new family of nitrogen containing chalcogenide glass materials was developed-chalconitride glasses that no one may have so far attempted. The Ge-Si-As-Se-Te-N chalconitride glass was prepared by adding silicon nitride to the base chalcogenide glass and showed a higher transition temperature T-g and microhardness H-nu than the base glass. This may be attributed to the incorporation of nitrogen into the glass network to form a more highly crosslinked structure. A possible structure of the chalconitride glass was proposed. At the same time, the special ability of silicon nitride, acting as an oxygen getter, to remove a series of oxygen impurity bands in the mid-infrared spectra of chalcogenide glasses was confirmed. The relevant mechanism was related to chemical reactivity among the melt constituents and the relative redox reactions existing in the glass melt. The possibility of redox reaction between Si3N4 and relevant oxides can normally be predicted by comparing their Gibbs energies.
