Abstract:The microstructure of recorded organic thin film in optical recording is observed using several methods, ie. optical microscopy (OM),scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). From the microarea morphology images, it is found that bubbles are produced after laser irradiation of phthalocyanine film. The comparison between these methods indicates that STM can provide detailed three dimensional parameters of the film adding to what can be obtained from OM and SEM. The investigation on the micostructure of thin film has been proved to be an important aid to analyze the disk performance.

Abstract:The scanning tunneling microscopy was used to investigate the microstructure of organic films used in the optical recording. It was found that bubbles will appear for phthalocyanine thin films after it is irradiated by a laser in the optical recording. The laser pulses of different energies produce bubbles of various minute structures, and the disc performance is closely correlated with the size of the bubbles. The results also show that the STM is really a powerful tool to investigate the microstructure of the optical disc.

Abstract:Homogeneous thin films of phthalocyanine compound were prepared by vapor deposition method and were found to be writable with He-Ne laser beam on phthalocyanine (MPc) films. The threshold irradiation time for writing the recording spots is 250 ns with He-Ne laser of 7.8mW power at the wavelength of 632.8 nm. It is indicated that the reflectance of MPc films is about 20% and the absorptance falls in 550-900 nm. The relationship between the structure and optical storage properties was discussed. The laser power and irradiation time increase as the phthalocyanine molecule side chain increases.

Abstract:We fabricated for the first time thermo-sensitive discotic liquid crystals by grafting poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) onto zirconium phosphate (ZrP) platelets using pre-irradiated polymerization. The I-N transition was investigated by adjusting the temperature for a single set of samples. We found that soft disks self-assemble into nematic liquid crystals in a wider thickness-over-diameter ratio than do hard disks.

Abstract:Thin film of Ag8In14Sb55Te23 was prepared by RF- magnetron sputtering method, and the organic dye (phthalocyanine) thin film was prepared by spin coating. Micro- and submicro-size changes induced by laser irradiation on the film were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The characteristic of recorded spots topography is related by recording condition (laser power, pulse width etc.) and properties of material (phase-change or shape-change). The mechanism of microstructure formation is discussed.

Abstract:This article reports a novel laser-induced micro-fabrication method and its monitoring system for three-dimensional (3D) microstructures. The mechanism of the method is that a small zone of thermoplastic material melted by laser heating grows in liquid surrounding environment, solidifying into a convex microstructure, such as micro-dot or micro-pillar. A laser diode (808 nm) with maximum power output of 130 mW is used as power source, and a kind of paraffin mixed with stearic acid and paint serves as the thermoplastic material for 3D microstructure formation experiments. A light microscope system consisting of a charge-coupled device (CCD) and a computer is utilized to realize real-time observation of the micro-fabricating process. The distribution of local temperature rise on material surface created by laser irradiation is simulated. The effects of liquid environment on microstructure formation have been theoretically analyzed and experimentally studied. Experiments are further carried out to investigate the relationship between laser spot and fabricated microstructures. The results indicate that the widths of microdots or micro-pillars are mostly determined by the size of focal spot, and their heights increase with the enlargement of laser power density. With this method, a micro-dot array of Chinese characters meaning "China" has been successfully fabricated through computer programming. This method has the advantages of implementing direct, mask-less, real-time and inexpensive 3D microstructure fabrication. Abstract:As organic dyes with excellent thermal and light stability, phthalocyanine compounds have been investigated as write-once read-many optical recording materials. By selecting different substituents and metallic ions, the absorption bands of thin film of phthalocyanine compounds were matched with the wavelengths of semiconductor lasers. It was found that the absorption regions of vacuum sublimated thin films of vanadyl phthalocyanine (VOPc), tetra-pentyloxy phthalocyanine vanadyl (TPPcVO) and tetra-nonyloxy phthalocyanine vanadyl (TNPcVO) were between 580 and 850 nm. In the near-IR region, the absorbance and reflectivity of thin films of VOPc were greater than 50%, and 20% respectively. The static optical recording test of the VOPc thin film showed that the write power was less than 10 mW with the write pulse width of 200 ns using an I-Ie-Ne laser as light source. The dynamic optical recording test of VOPc as a write-once read-many recording material on a 5.25 in optical disk indicated that the carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) was greater than 45 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, spin-coated thin films of phthalocyanine dye were prepared. Absorption spectrum of the thin film shows a comparatively broad absorption at the wavelength region 630-770nm and there is a steep absorption edge at the wavelength 750nm, which is crucial to high reflectivity. Optical parameters of the thin film was measured by a spectroscopic ellipsometer. Extinction coefficient found to be very little at the wavelength 780-810nm. 5-in CD-R discs made of this dye exhibit good performance after recorded in Yamaha 20 speed recorder. Jitters of land or pit are less than 35ns and the 3T-11T's signals show very good quality. This dye is promising recording media for CD-R for much higher speed recording in the future.

Abstract:The optical and xerographic properties of the phthalocyanine codeposited composite (cDC) films and ultrathin multilayered (UTML) structures have been studied. Observed UV-visible absorption spectra indicate that the Q-band absorption of the cDc films is different from that of the single component films, and from that of the UTML structures. The absorption peaks are shifted with the number and thickness of the layers. This spectral variation is most likely to be due to the dipole–dipole and charge transfer interactions among different molecular assemblies. The photosensitivity of the cDC films is superior to that of the single component films. This improvement is attributed to the efficient photoinduced charge transfer and charge separation among the composites. Moreover, the photosensitivity of the UTML structures is over tenfold better than that of the cDC films, probably due to the ultrafast photoinduced charge transfer and separation and the unipolar transport of the photogenerated holes.

Abstract:GeSb2Te4 phase change thin film was prepared by RF-magnetron sputtering method. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to study the micro-structure of short-wavelength recorded spots. Microarea morphology images show that the recorded domain bulge after laser irradiation. With the increasing of writing pulse width, depression appears in the center of recorded spot. It is demonstrated that AFM is a very useful tool to evaluate the recorded spots and improve the performance of phase change media.

Abstract:Both optical absorption spectra and optical constants of vacuum sublimed films of a metal substituted phthalocyanine compound (MPc) were studied. The dynamic optical storage test of MPc as a recording medium showed that the carrier to noise ratio (CNR) of the 5.25�� disk is greater than 43 dB.

Abstract:In this paper the absorption change of phthalocyanine compounds with the substitution of the central metallic ions and organic derivatives has been reported. The temperature dependence of absorption spectra of Langmuir Blodgett (L B) films of phthlocyanine copper (TNPcCu) and phthlocyanine zinc (TNPPcZn) has been presented too. The optical hysteresis and reverse optical absorption change have been found in TNPcCu and TNPPcZn L B thin films respectively. Their rewritable optical storage characteristics have been reported.

Abstract:A novel bromoboron trinitro-subphthalocyanine (BTN-SubPc) thin film has been developed for write-once optical recording by vacuum evaporation. The spectral and optical properties of the film are studied. Some information may be useful when dealing with recording applications, such as uniformity and anisotropy of this film are given. The optical recording performance of the BTN-SubPc thin film shows that high reflectivity contrast (> 30%) can be obtained at low writing power (10 mW) and short writing pulse width (300 ns) using He-Ne laser (632.8 nm) irradiation. For this kind of thin film, lower recording energy is needed to get higher or equivalent reflectivity contrast when compared with some MPc and cyanine (for commercial use) films studied previously. These results indicate the great potential of SubPc in short-wave length optical recording applications, especially as recording medium of DVD-R.

Abstract:Subphthalocyanine (SubPc) thin films exhibit attractive characteristics in high-density optical storage applications. We have realized red-light (632.8nm) recording on SubPc thin films previously. In this paper, novel subphthalocyanine thin films were developed by vacuum evaporation and spin-coating method. Their static and dynamic green-light (514.5nm) recording performance were studied using self-developed short-wavelength optical disk testers. Sufficient reflectivity, reflectivity contrast and CNR can also be obtained at 514.5nm if an appropriate multilayer structure was applied. It spread the dyes' traditional operating wavelength and provided a new clew for double-wave length (even double short-wavelength) recording/reading and choosing short-wavelength recording materials.

Abstract:Vacuum-sublimed films of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) were prepared. The absorption spectrum and optical constants of the film were studied. It was found that there is a comparatively large absorption region at wavelength of 550 – 750 nm. A static optical recording test on a CuPc film on a glass substrate indicated that low power HeNe laser irradiation could initiate a relatively large reflectivity change. It has been observed that the introduction of a metallic reflective layer on the recording layer will raise the writing threshold energy and the maximum reflectivity contrast.

Abstract:<p>Microstructures assume crucial role in preparation of functional surfaces, such as self-cleaning, anti-icing and drag reduction. In the paper, picosecond laser is used for the fabrication of the microstructures by the balanced photothermal and photochemical action. In order to improve the controllability of structural dimensions, we reported on fabrication of smooth swelling by picosecond laser irradiation of two-layer substrate. The upper layer is swelling doped PMMA; the lower layer is black acrylic. This work first obtained different microlines by tuning the scanning speed through focusing on the interface. Then, different swelling structures were fabricated by adjustment of laser irradiation time. Further, the dependence of swelling morphology on irradiation time and laser power were studied. For the different swellings, the microlens array was obtained by replication and the imaging performance was tested. This demonstrated the possibility of the method for preparation of the microlens array and other functional microstructures.</p>
