Abstract:Both optical absorption spectra and optical constants of vacuum sublimed films of a metal substituted phthalocyanine compound (MPc) were studied. The dynamic optical storage test of MPc as a recording medium showed that the carrier to noise ratio (CNR) of the 5.25�� disk is greater than 43 dB.

Abstract:Homogeneous thin films of phthalocyanine compound were prepared by vapor deposition method and were found to be writable with He-Ne laser beam on phthalocyanine (MPc) films. The threshold irradiation time for writing the recording spots is 250 ns with He-Ne laser of 7.8mW power at the wavelength of 632.8 nm. It is indicated that the reflectance of MPc films is about 20% and the absorptance falls in 550-900 nm. The relationship between the structure and optical storage properties was discussed. The laser power and irradiation time increase as the phthalocyanine molecule side chain increases.

Abstract:As organic dyes with excellent thermal and light stability, phthalocyanine compounds have been investigated as write-once read-many optical recording materials. By selecting different substituents and metallic ions, the absorption bands of thin film of phthalocyanine compounds were matched with the wavelengths of semiconductor lasers. It was found that the absorption regions of vacuum sublimated thin films of vanadyl phthalocyanine (VOPc), tetra-pentyloxy phthalocyanine vanadyl (TPPcVO) and tetra-nonyloxy phthalocyanine vanadyl (TNPcVO) were between 580 and 850 nm. In the near-IR region, the absorbance and reflectivity of thin films of VOPc were greater than 50%, and 20% respectively. The static optical recording test of the VOPc thin film showed that the write power was less than 10 mW with the write pulse width of 200 ns using an I-Ie-Ne laser as light source. The dynamic optical recording test of VOPc as a write-once read-many recording material on a 5.25 in optical disk indicated that the carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) was greater than 45 dB.

Abstract:Spectroscopic properties and optical storage performance of spin-coated soluble metallophthalocyanine Pr4MPc/PMMA films were studied. Pr4MPc showed different absorption spectra for the chloroform solvent and the spin-coated films. The spin-coated film based 5�� disk testing showed that its reflectivity contrast C was bigger than 35% in a static optical storage testing, and the signal to noise ratio (SNR) was 40dB in a dynamic optical storage testing.

Abstract:Vacuum-sublimed films of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) were prepared. The absorption spectrum and optical constants of the film were studied. It was found that there is a comparatively large absorption region at wavelength of 550 – 750 nm. A static optical recording test on a CuPc film on a glass substrate indicated that low power HeNe laser irradiation could initiate a relatively large reflectivity change. It has been observed that the introduction of a metallic reflective layer on the recording layer will raise the writing threshold energy and the maximum reflectivity contrast.

Abstract:Subphthalocyanine (SubPc) thin films exhibit attractive characteristics in high-density optical storage applications. We have realized red-light (632.8nm) recording on SubPc thin films previously. In this paper, novel subphthalocyanine thin films were developed by vacuum evaporation and spin-coating method. Their static and dynamic green-light (514.5nm) recording performance were studied using self-developed short-wavelength optical disk testers. Sufficient reflectivity, reflectivity contrast and CNR can also be obtained at 514.5nm if an appropriate multilayer structure was applied. It spread the dyes' traditional operating wavelength and provided a new clew for double-wave length (even double short-wavelength) recording/reading and choosing short-wavelength recording materials.

Abstract:In this paper, spin-coated thin films of phthalocyanine dye were prepared. Absorption spectrum of the thin film shows a comparatively broad absorption at the wavelength region 630-770nm and there is a steep absorption edge at the wavelength 750nm, which is crucial to high reflectivity. Optical parameters of the thin film was measured by a spectroscopic ellipsometer. Extinction coefficient found to be very little at the wavelength 780-810nm. 5-in CD-R discs made of this dye exhibit good performance after recorded in Yamaha 20 speed recorder. Jitters of land or pit are less than 35ns and the 3T-11T's signals show very good quality. This dye is promising recording media for CD-R for much higher speed recording in the future.

Abstract:A cyanine-in-polymer film was prepared by spin-coating process on pregrooved polycarbonate substrate, and its optical storage performance was studied. The reflectance and absorbance of the film at 830 nm wavelength are high enough for optical storage. With optimum recording condition, 58 dB of carrier-to-noise ratio was obtained for single layer disk. Both of carrier-to-noise ratio and carrier signal level are proportional to log of the reflectivity change of the film before and after laser recording.

Abstract:A cyanine-polymer coating was prepared by spin-coating process on pregrooved PC substrate, and its optical storage performance was studied. The reflectance and the absorptance of the coating at 660-830 nm are high enough for optical storage. With optimum recording condition, 58 dB signal to noise ratio (CNR) was obtained, under the conditions when the recording linear speed was 2 m/s, the recording power was 5.5 mW and the frequency was 60 kHz. The CNR, C (carrier signal level) have following relations with ��R (change of reflectance of the coating before and after recording): C��lg��R, CNR��lg��R.

Abstract:A novel bromoboron trinitro-subphthalocyanine (BTN-SubPc) thin film has been developed for write-once optical recording by vacuum evaporation. The spectral and optical properties of the film are studied. Some information may be useful when dealing with recording applications, such as uniformity and anisotropy of this film are given. The optical recording performance of the BTN-SubPc thin film shows that high reflectivity contrast (> 30%) can be obtained at low writing power (10 mW) and short writing pulse width (300 ns) using He-Ne laser (632.8 nm) irradiation. For this kind of thin film, lower recording energy is needed to get higher or equivalent reflectivity contrast when compared with some MPc and cyanine (for commercial use) films studied previously. These results indicate the great potential of SubPc in short-wave length optical recording applications, especially as recording medium of DVD-R.

Abstract:In this paper the absorption change of phthalocyanine compounds with the substitution of the central metallic ions and organic derivatives has been reported. The temperature dependence of absorption spectra of Langmuir Blodgett (L B) films of phthlocyanine copper (TNPcCu) and phthlocyanine zinc (TNPPcZn) has been presented too. The optical hysteresis and reverse optical absorption change have been found in TNPcCu and TNPPcZn L B thin films respectively. Their rewritable optical storage characteristics have been reported.

Abstract:Optical data storage is a frontier in the information science. Currently, there are mainly two kinds of storage materials, i.e., thermal-optic and photonic materials. The storage methods are divided into serial and parallel modes. In the market, the mature technique is CD-RW, which uses the thermal-optic material and serial method. The storage density of the CD-RW is restricted by the size of material particles, the conduction of heat, etc. Besides, the recording speed is seriously limited by the process of heating. Photonic materials and parallel method will be the trend in the optical data storage. Because it is based on the photon reaction on the molecule scale, the storage density and speed will be greatly increased. In this paper, a new kind of organic photochromic material - pyrrylfulgide was studied. A parallel optical data storage system was established. Using the pyrrylfulgide/PMMA film as a recording medium, micro-images and binary digital information could be recorded, readout and erased in this parallel system. The recorded information on the film can be kept for at least 8 months in dark at room temperature. So far, the storage density is 3x10(7) bit/cm(2).

Abstract:Thin films of tetra-neopentoxy phthalocyanine zinc (TNPPcZn) were prepared from its toluene solution by spin-coating technique. Their structural changes due to heat treatment were characterised by the change in optical absorption. The static rewritable optical storage performance of these thin films with recording wavelength at 632.8 nm was investigated. Under the selected writing and erasing conditions, 35 cycles was realized in the static measurement. The reflectivity contrast was in the range of -20%similar to 20%.

Abstract:Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc)/cadmium sulphide (CdS) multilayer films were prepared by vacuum sublimation. X‐ray diffraction, secondary ion mass, and optical absorption spectra and photoconductive properties of the multilayer films were measured. The results showed that the multilayer films had a clearly alternating layered structure on a nanometre scale. The effects of the pair number and the substrate temperature on the photosensitivity of the multilayer films were studied. It was found that three‐pair CuPc/CdS multilayer films at a substrate temperature of 150 °C had the maximum photosensitivity. The ratio of the photocurrent to the dark current was 7.1 × 103. The CuPc/CdS multilayer films had higher photosensitivity than CuPc/ZnS multilayer films. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Abstract:We study the absorption and transmission spectra, the thermal stability and the green-light (514.5 nm) static optical recording properties of nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc) thin film. It is found that this film occupies suitable absorption and transmission properties, excellent thermal stability (decomposition point > 600degreesC) and outstanding thermal decomposition characteristics (weight loss in one step decomposition > 60%) for green-light (514.5 nm) optical recording. High reflectivity contrast (> 50%) was obtained at low writing power (5 mW) and short writing pulse-width (100 ns) using an Ar+ laser (514.5 nm) irradiation. Compared with azo in polymer films, the subphthalocyanine film and Sb-Te-Based phase change films, the NiPc Elm has better green-light static recording properties. These results indicate that metal phthalocyanine is not only a qualified material for near infrared optical recording but also a promising recording medium candidate for green-light DVD-R.

Abstract:3D optical storage, spatially expanding storage capacity, is regarded as an effective and economical way to break the diffraction limit of the conventional 2D optical storage. In this study, a new kind of 3D optical storage medium, i.e., vanadium ions (V5+) doped sodium borate glass, is developed, showing intriguing spatially-selected photochromism (PC) upon laser driven excitation. Significantly, a brand-new PC mechanism of V5+-aggregation regulated by localized optical basicity (OB) of glass is proposed and demonstrated. The developed PC glass is responsive to a low-price desktop-level mini-laser to encode optical information, yields unique twofold decoding modes in bright- and dark-fields, and shows good data erasibility. 3D volumetric optical storage with a memory density of approximate to 480 Mbit cm-3 is realized with the aid of an advanced femtosecond laser micro-machining system. The findings suggest a novel design approach to fabricate 3D PC glass in terms of manipulating the scale of optical basicity in glass, hopefully stimulating the development of new multi-dimensional PC optical storage media. A new strategy to design photochromic glass as 3D optical storage medium is proposed, following a principle of regulating local optical basicity of glass during the interaction with a laser.image

Abstract:Accelerated aging test was adopted to determine the life of phthalocyanine (Pc) thin film for optical storage. The variation of reflectivity was used as the basis of determination, the reflectivity versus aging time was measure at 55 °C, 85%RH; 65 °C, 85%RH and 75 °C, 85%RH. Then the natural life of Pc thin film was estimated by extrapolation.

Abstract:Organometallic photochromic complexes, which are more stable than those traditional pure organic photochromic compounds, have a wide variety of potential applications in high-density optical storage. In this paper, Ag-TCNQ and Cu-TCNQ thin films were prepared by physical vapor deposition method. The proportion dependence of the spectral and optical properties of Ag-TCNQ thin films were studied and discussed. Multilayer film configuration was designed and prepared for optical memory study and its short-wavelength (514.5 nm) photochromic characteristics were reported. A recommendation of application of Metal TCNQ complexes for,high-density and super high density optical storage was proposed as well.

Abstract:In this paper, a cyanine film has been prepared by spin-coating process on the pregrooved polycarbonate substrate. The transmission, reflection and absorption spectra of the film were measured. The complex refractive index n, k of the film was calculated. Under the recording condition specified by CD-R Orange Book, the carrier to noise ratio (CNR) of the single dye layer disk are greater than 47dB at traveling rate of 1.4m/s, 2.8m/s, and 5.6m/s. The estimated lifetime of the CD-R using this dye film as the recording medium reaches up to 10 years under normal using condition.
