Abstract:A novel design of physical format coding system (PFCS) is presented based on Multi-level read-only memory disc (ML ROM) in order to solve the problem of low efficiency and long period of disc testing during system development. The PFCS is composed of four units, which are 'Encode', 'Add Noise', 'Decode', 'Error Rate', and 'Information'. It is developed with MFC under the environment of VC++ 6.0, and capable to visually simulate the procedure of data processing for ML ROM. This system can also be used for developing other optical disc storage system or similar channel coding system.

Abstract:Multilevel optical data storage is an important technology to improve the recording density of optical disc without changing the optical parameters. One approach is multilevel amplitude modulation, which uses the variance of signal amplitude of length-fixed recorded marks to record information. Another one is multilevel runlength-limited (RLL) modulation, which records information in both the signal amplitude and the length of recorded marks, thus can improve the recording density more effectively than the first way. Multilevel RLL coding is a key technology in multilevel RLL modulation optical recording. In this paper, a new 8-ary (1, 3) RLL code is designed with state splitting algorithm. The recording density of this code is as high as 3.0 bits/ symbol, and the encoder/decoder is simple and easy to implement. The proposed code can be used for future high density multilevel RLL modulation optical disc systems.

Abstract:This paper presents the new development of the signal waveform modulation optical disc. The signal waveform modulation optical disc is realized through inserting a sub-pit/sub-land into an original land/pit. More storage states are realized with changing the size and position of the sub-pits/sub-lands, which influence the corresponding readout signal waveforms. Modulation code and its realization are key technologies for signal waveform modulation optical disc. In this study, we employ maximum run transition code and level modulation process as the modulation code of signal waveform modulation optical disc. A 5/6MTR (2, 10) code is designed as the first step of the proposed modulation code, and the level modulation process are used to avoid multilevel on shortest runs. The realization process of the proposed code is presented, and the maximum level numbers for different run-length marks are investigated with the calculated readout signals.

Abstract:To improve the feedback precision of the photoelectric encoder and remove the disturbance of the rectangular waveform,a photoelectric encoder measuring system based on complex programmable logic device(CPLD) was offered,which had the ability of frequency multiplication and filtering.The photoelectric encoder measurement principle was introduced.The system was divided into three modules,including filtering phase,frequency and the counter.These three modules were designed and simulated.The simulation results show that the design methods meet signal processing requirements of high-precision servo motor orthogonal coding.

Abstract:With the continuously growing demand for optical network bandwidths,multi-dimensional and multi-level modulation formats,such as 8PSK,8QAM,16QAM,have become a current focal point of research.In this paper,we make a comprehensive comparative analysis of the principles and topologies for the realization of these formats and obtain 8PSK,8QAM and 16QAM modulated optical signals by using commercially available modulation devices configured in a serial or hybrid structure.We can improve the system integration level and signal transmission performances by using configuration in a parallel structure,but it often needs multiple parallel structures,which raises harsh requirements on the cost and processes for system integration.

Abstract:Multilevel modulation coding is the core technology for multilevel optical storage. The technology is employed to increase the capacity of the read-only disc with no change on original recording symbols size. With the combination of multilevel modulation and the run-length limited modulation, short run-length with low levels can form long run-length with high levels while it also suitable for long run-length by short run-lengths. And the DC-suppression can be controlled by the allowance of long run-length without sacrifice effective bits. This double-modulation scheme not only can improve coding efficiency, but also can greatly increase the recording density. In this paper, the theory of multilevel run-length limited modulation coding is discussed. And a high rate of 6/7, five level ( 1,8) code scheme is proposed. This scheme can increase the recording density compared to that in of DVD. Therefore, it is expected that this proposed scheme could be used for the next high-density multilevel run-length limited modulation optical storage system.

Abstract:Multilevel storage is the easiest two-dimensional storage technology. On the basis of recording and read-out optical system of Digital Versatile Disc (DVD), by the method of multilevel run-length coding, the storage capacity can be increased by 60 percent of DVD9's, reaching 14 Giga Bytes. In order to meet the requirement of a 10(-4) raw Bit Error Rate (BER) of data readout, this paper presents a method of multilevel run-length coding with changeable level numbers. This method can take advantage of run-length redundancy to the utmost and reduce Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) caused by multilevel run-length. Multilevel run-length coding uses the method of two steps modulation. This paper introduces a coding method of DK (1, 9) and R=1 code rate. Realized by Pulse Width Modulation, multilevel run-length modulation coding with changeable level has good symmetry. Its readout characteristics are the same as that of DVD with normal run-length modulation, therefore the servo control system needn't be changed. Also the signal can be recognized in two aspects respectively, run-length and level. In the sample disc, average raw BER in the two aspects is less than 10(-3). Multilevel run-length modulation coding could be applied in various systems of run-length modulation coding. On the basis of the structure and characteristics of the primitive system, the comprehensive efficiency of coding could be increased by 33 to 50 percent.

Abstract:The channel encoding scheme for speech in digital trunking system is CRC+RCPC+Interleave, RCPC has a very strong ability to control errors, and the depth of decoding is also a main factor affect the system's performance. It specially emphases on analyzing rate-compatible punctured convolution code a- bout it's encoding process and characteristics. Different protected methods and depth of decoding shall be demonstrated and the simulations results shall be shown and analyzed.

Abstract:Coded modulation is an important part of broadcasting system and it affects the performance of the whole system. In this paper, the system model of typical coded modulation system(BICM) and common algorithms of demapping and LDPC decoding are summarized and analyzed. After that, the performance of different algorithms is analyzed by simulations. The results could be adopted to facilitate the hardware design and implementation.

Abstract:Amplitude-modulated collinear holographic data storage technology has high storage density, fast data transfer rate and stable system. The key to realizing system operation is to decode the amplitude code quickly and correctly. We proposed a decoding method based on 3:16 amplitude code. We used the convolution calculation to locate the sync mark point of every sub-page in the data page quickly and calculated the magnification rates among sub-pages to get the correct sub-page image segmentation. Taking the bit error rate as the evaluation standard, we verified our method successfully in different image quality.

Abstract:Analysis of the optical channel of a photochromic multi-level storage system is the basis of the design of signal-processing sub-systems. Fourier optics was used to study the change of the the optical field distribution on the exit pupil of the pickup caused by the change of the reflective field on the optical disc surface. The superposition characteriscs of the Fourier optics and the photochromic marks was used to develop a model of the optical channel of a photochromic multi-level optical disc to analyze the readout signal and the relations between its components over a single mark. The experiments used a kind of fulgide photochromic material as the recording layer. Different combinations of the laser power and the write time were used with 4-level recording realized using high, medium, low and zero laser diode powers. The result shows that a numerical analysis is verified by the experimental readout signals.

Abstract:A high-efficient and novel varying-level multilevel run-length-limited modulation code is proposed for signal waveform modulation (SWM) optical discs. The proposed code is composed of a maximum transition run (MTR) code and a level modulation process. The MTR code is employed to realize high code rate and satisfy the requirements of channels. Level modulation is used to eliminate inappropriate codewords for SWM channels and determine the level numbers for different runs. The rate of the presented code is 7/8 bits/symbols, and the recording density parameter RBPF (recording bits per 400 nm) is 2.26, which is 50.7% more than that of a digital versatile disc (DVD). The realization of the proposed code in SWM discs and the corresponding signal characteristics are also shown. With the run-length detection and level detection solution, the bit error rate (BER) is less than 2×10-4, which is feasible for SWM multilevel optical discs.
Optimization of Modulation Code for a Multi-Layer Disc

Abstract:The current modulation code for a multilayer parallelaccess disc was optimized to increase the storage density. Two problems which affect the optimization are the acceptable jitter and the phaselocked loop (PLL) synchronization process. A novel method is proposed for procuring the clock information for a multilayer disc, which satisfies the PLL requirements. The effectiveness of the method was proven using probability theory. The optimized PLL parameters for the multilayer disc are d=4 and k=1015 which improve the track density by 15%23%.

Abstract:A multi-level method using wave-shape modulation is presented. In this method, a short pit or land is added to the original marks, which leads to a recognizable "disturbance" in the readout signal and results in wave-shape modulation of readout signal. Using a simplified mastering model and angular-spectrum decomposition-based readout model, this method is simulated on the DVD system. Simulation determines how many levels can be realized for each run-length as well as the writing parameters for each level. Experiments on typical run-length of 6T and 11T are carried out. The readout signal agrees with the simulated one. Level error rates less than 1×10-4 and 1×10-5 are achieved. Experiments validate this new multi-level recording method.

Abstract:Multi-level run-length-limited (ML-RLL) modulation on optical storage channels is a promising method to increase the recording density effectively. In this paper, some experimental results of 4-level RLL modulation on digital versatile disc (DVD) read-only discs are firstly presented. A new DC-free 4-ary RLL (2.8) code with code rate of 8/10 (bits/symbol) is designed, and partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detection is used to evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of multi-level readout signals.
