Abstract:By analyzing the limitation of the second-moment definition of divergence angle and redefining this angle which is related to the beam-width, it is pointed out that the quality factor M2 is essentially a measure of the beam collimation. Taking the nonlinear self-focusing optics phenomenon as an example, it is illustrated that this factor could be smaller than one if the possible nonlinear effects become important. The discrepancy between the inequality M2��1 in linear optics and the uncertainty elation of quantum mechanics is also emphasized.

Abstract:A simple physical picture for producing the new beam CO2 lasers was put forward, and based on which, a new beam intracavity CO2 laser was successfully developed recently with a cavity length of 500mm, a discharge-region-length of 420mm, output of 17W, and its equivalent beam-quality-factor M2=0.26. If the concept on the ��equivalent M2�� is reasonable, then it becomes possible to make the CO2 lasers with their output beyond the limitation set by the diffraction restriction.

Abstract:On the basis of the truncated second-order moments method on the cylindrical coordinate systems, an analytical expression of the generalized beam propagation factor (MG2 factor) of hard-edged diffracted controllable dark-hollow beams is derived and illustrated numerically. It is shown that the MG2 factor of truncated controllable dark-hollow beams is dependent on the beam truncation parameter δ and the beam parameters N and ε. The result can be reduced to that for the non-truncated case as the truncation parameter approaches to be infinite. The power fraction is also discussed analytically and numerically.

Abstract:A new technique for real-time measurement of beam quality factor M~2 is presented.The laser beam is divided into a set of 3×3 beams by two gratings arranged orthogonally.Then,this 3×3 beams are rotated by a beam steering so that they arrive at the charge-coupled device(CCD) camera with various optical paths.The maximum optical path difference is approximately twice as much as the Rayleigh range.Thus the beam spots at various positions can be retrieved by a single CCD camera simultaneously.And their widths can be calculated by the second moment method.At last,the beam quality factor M~2 is retrieved by the curve-fitting method.The measurement result of a continuous wave(CW) He-Ne laser beam agrees well with that using conventional technique.

Abstract:The M 2 factor matrix for twodimensional HermiteGaussian field is proposed. By introducing coupled beams half width and coupled M 2 factor, the M 2 factor matrix of the mode after being rotated around the propagation axis by some angle has been derived theoretically in the same coordinate. The rules of change of parameters related to M 2 factor matrix varying with the modes' rotation angle have been simulated numerically; and the track of M 2 factor vectors versus the modes' rotation angle has been given. Calculation results are in good agreement with theoretically derived ones, which proves that by using M 2 factor matrix, M 2 factors of a HermiteGaussian mode after rotation by a certain angle can be related with those of the same mode before rotation. This method is universally applicable to the beam quality analysis for asymmetric higher Gaussian beams, and is very important in guiding the mesurement of beam quality in practice.

Abstract:A method is presented for beam quality improvement, in master oscillator power amplifier laser systems. Intensive study was first carried out with the beam wavefront evolution in a laser resonator. When the laser beam propagates inside the resonator, the spherical aberration coefficient of the beam wavefront can change sign, i.e., the negative spherical aberration coefficient can turn to positive, and vice versa. This process also occurs when the beam propagates outside the resonator in a free space. The laser beam, from an oscillator with negative spherical aberration, was found to be well-compensated by the positive spherical aberration of a strongly pumped laser rod in a laser amplifier. The laser beam quality M2 factor has been significantly improved, from 2.2 to 1.4, while the output power has been scaled from 31 W up to 60 W.

Abstract:>The concept of the beam propagation factor M2 is extended for chromatic laser beams. The definition of the beam propagation factor can be generalized with the weighted effective wavelength. Using the new definition of factor M2, the propagation of chromatic beams can be analyzed by the beam propagation factor M2 as same as that of monochromatic beams. A simple method to measure the chromatic beam factor M2 is demonstrated. The chromatic factor M2 is found invariable while the laser beam propagates through the dispersion-free ABCD system.

Abstract:On the basis of the truncated second-order moments method in the cylindrical coordinate systems and the expansion of the hard-edged aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate method used to calculate the generalized beam propagation factor (M2 factor) is proposed. The approximate analytical expressions of the generalized M2 factor for rotationally symmetric hard-edged diffracted flattened Gaussian beams defined by Gori [Opt. Commun. 107, 335 (1994)] and Li [Opt. Lett. 27, 1007 (2002)] are derived, respectively; we show that it depends on the beam order N and the beam truncation parameter delta. Some typical numerical examples are given to illustrate its applications that we compare by using the obtained analytical method and the numerical integration method.

Abstract:The beam quality factor M-2 could be divided into the amplitude item M-u(2) and the phase item M-phi(2). Compared with the phase item, M-u(2) is more controllable for a laser power amplifier system. A power amplifier model is developed to explain the beam quality improvement by power amplifier. In such a model, the relation between the beam quality improvement and the pump mode is analyzed. Corresponding experiment results agree well with the theory model. (C) 2012 by Astro, Ltd.

Abstract:Laser beam quality is a key parameter for both industry and science. However, the most common measure, the M2 parameter, requires numerous intensity spatial-profiles for its determination. This is particularly inconvenient for modelling the impact of photonic devices on M2, such as metalenses and thin-film stacks, since models typically output a single electric field spatial-profile. Such a profile is also commonly determined in experiments from e.g., Shack-Hartmann sensors, shear plates, or off-axis holography. We introduce and test the validity and limitations of an explicit method to calculate M2 from a single electric field spatial-profile of the beam in any chosen transverse plane along the propagation direction.

Abstract:Based on the nonparaxial vectorial moment theory of light beam propagation, the beam quality factor M2 of TE0 propagating mode for GaAs/Ga0.7Al0.3As double heterostructure injection laser is analyzed and calculated. The results show that M2 can be smaller than unity if the active layer thickness d is smaller than 0.32 times of wavelength, and there is not a low bound for M2 of semiconductor laser.

Abstract:A unified definition for the rotation angle and rotation angular speed of general beams, including those with orbital angular momentum (OAM), has been lacking until now. The rotation of a general beam is characterized by observing the rotational behavior of the directions of the extreme spot sizes during propagation. We introduce the beam quality $M^2(\psi)$ factor to characterize the unique beam quality of a general beam across all directions, not limited to the $x$- or $y$-axes. Besides that, we present the beam center $s_{\psi}(\psi,z)$, spot size $w_{\psi}(\psi,z)$, waist position, waist radius, and divergence angle along the direction that forms an angle $\psi$ with the $x$-axis in the plane perpendicular to the $z$-axis for the general beam. Furthermore, this paper presents rapid calculation formulas for these parameters, utilizing the mode expansion method (MEM). Subsequently, we prove that only two extreme spot sizes exist in a given detection plane and the angle between the maximum and minimum spot angles is consistently $90^{\circ}$ during the propagation. We also prove the spot rotation angles converge as $z$ approaches either positive or negative infinity. We first show the extreme spot sizes, spot rotation angle, and angular speed for the vortex beam. Our formulas efficiently differentiate between vortex OAM beams and asymmetry OAM beams.

Abstract:A method is presented to dynamically improve the beam quality in laser amplifiers by spherical aberration compensation. By imaging the field with a negative spherical aberration into a laser amplifier, the wavefront aberration of an input beam could be compensated by that of the gain medium in the amplifier with positive spherical aberration. Both power amplification and beam quality improvement can be achieved simultaneously. No additional optical components are introduced. Experiments are conducted for a beam from an oscillator with 28 W output power. The M2 factor of the beam was improved from 4.2 to 1.6 after amplification. The power was also amplified to 54.7 W. It is a cost-effective and passive way for wavefront compensation, as compared to deformable mirrors and phase corrector plates.

Abstract:On the basis of the fact that a hard-edged aperture function can be expanded into an approximate sum of complex Gaussian functions with finite numbers and the method of truncated second-order moments, the generalized beam propagation factor of truncated partially coherent controllable dark-hollow beams is derived. Abstract:Summary Firstly, the analytical expression for the M 2 factor of the off-axial Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beams is derived based on the second-order moments definition. Secondly, the analytical propagation expression for the kurtosis parameter of the off-axial Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beams is also derived on the basis of the analytical propagation equation of the off-axial Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beams. It should be pointed out that the obtained results could be straightforwardly applied to the two-dimensional case and the off-axial Hermite-cosine-Gaussian beams.
