Abstract:The numerical analysis of CW multimode laser beam transformed by time-varying random phase plate is presented in this paper. The method is based on diffraction integral formula. The dependence of the intensity distribution on the element size, changing frequency and duty ratio is discussed in detail. The numerical results account for the experimental results satisfactorily.

Abstract:A method is presented for beam quality improvement, in master oscillator power amplifier laser systems. Intensive study was first carried out with the beam wavefront evolution in a laser resonator. When the laser beam propagates inside the resonator, the spherical aberration coefficient of the beam wavefront can change sign, i.e., the negative spherical aberration coefficient can turn to positive, and vice versa. This process also occurs when the beam propagates outside the resonator in a free space. The laser beam, from an oscillator with negative spherical aberration, was found to be well-compensated by the positive spherical aberration of a strongly pumped laser rod in a laser amplifier. The laser beam quality M2 factor has been significantly improved, from 2.2 to 1.4, while the output power has been scaled from 31 W up to 60 W.

Abstract:By analyzing the limitation of the second-moment definition of divergence angle and redefining this angle which is related to the beam-width, it is pointed out that the quality factor M2 is essentially a measure of the beam collimation. Taking the nonlinear self-focusing optics phenomenon as an example, it is illustrated that this factor could be smaller than one if the possible nonlinear effects become important. The discrepancy between the inequality M2��1 in linear optics and the uncertainty elation of quantum mechanics is also emphasized.

Abstract:The mode field radii in the near field and the angular radii of the far field divergence defined by second moment and differential operator algorithm and the beam propagation factor defined by second moment algorithm were presented to describe the characteristic beam parameters in the diffracted field of the fiber end face comprehensively. In the condition of paraxial approximation, the simple relationship of the beam parameters hinged on the beam propagation factor were educed. The verdict that beam propagation should be more than 1 for fiber was presented. The beam parameters can be calculated accurately from the mode field distribution of the fiber, or from the diffraction frequency spectrum distribution in the far field, which is experimentally measurable exactly. The above principles and findings can serve as theoretical basis for measuring and computing the characteristic parameters of fiber. The analytic functions and scopes of the characteristic beam parameters in the diffracted field of LP 01 mode step index fiber were deduced.

Abstract:A simple physical picture for producing the new beam CO2 lasers was put forward, and based on which, a new beam intracavity CO2 laser was successfully developed recently with a cavity length of 500mm, a discharge-region-length of 420mm, output of 17W, and its equivalent beam-quality-factor M2=0.26. If the concept on the ��equivalent M2�� is reasonable, then it becomes possible to make the CO2 lasers with their output beyond the limitation set by the diffraction restriction.

Abstract:In order to evaluate a fiber amplifier’s output beam quality, we have explored the beam quality factor calculation. A theoretical beam quality factor calculation method is presented in this paper. The method bases on modal power decomposition, laser rate equations and Fourier diffraction theory. Through the rate equations, each modal power weight factor at the fiber output facet is obtained. By the modal power decomposition, the optical field at the fiber output facet is established. Finally, running Fourier transformation, the beam diverging state in free space and corresponding M 2 parameter are obtained. The calculation process is verified with applying it to working out the beam M 2 parameters of large-mode-area (LMA) fiber amplifier system under different conditions. The numerical results help us well know and predict the out beam property. Some obtained results are also accord with other reporting outcomes.

Abstract:The beam quality factor M-2 could be divided into the amplitude item M-u(2) and the phase item M-phi(2). Compared with the phase item, M-u(2) is more controllable for a laser power amplifier system. A power amplifier model is developed to explain the beam quality improvement by power amplifier. Abstract:A numerical model is established to predict the beam quality factor M2 of fiber laser for the first time. The finite-difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM) is introduced to simulate the beam propagation of thulium-doped fiber lasers (TDFLs) with given design parameters. The output beam profile can be calculated for an active fiber with complex refractive index profiles and various bending radii. The beam quality factor M2 can be obtained by the calculated beam profile. The numerical simulation results agree with the reported experiment data with a deviation of less than 10 %, which validates the accuracy of the model. This model provides a convenient and efficient approach for designing the high-beam-quality TDFLs with reduced experiment efforts.

Two Kinds of New Beam Lasers

Abstract:\According to the more complete diffraction theory, a series of new beams was invented both outside and inside laser cavity by using lambda/2 phase plate. A new beam with equivalent beam quality factor M-e(2)<1 is achieved on ten-watt CO2 laser and on hundred-Watt and thousand-Watt CO2 laser with axial express flux. It may be named as the first kind of new beam laser. From the point of view of practical applications, we designed and produced a new structure of laser cavity whose output mirror was a special mirror with step reflectivity. We have realized 1000W new beam on CO2 laser with transverse express flux, which is close to the fundamental mode. It may be named as the second kind new laser beam. Its structure is simpler than others, but it brings excellent results.

Abstract:Based on the ripple transfers of electric-field amplitude and phase in frequency tripling, simple formulas are derived for the harmonic laser’s beam-quality factor M3ω2, with an arbitrary fundamental incidence to ideal nonlinear crystals. Whereas the harmonic beam’s quality is generally degraded, the beam’s divergence is similar to that of the fundamental after nonlinear frequency conversion. For practical crystals with periodic surface ripples that are caused by their machining, a multiorder diffractive model is presented with which the focusing properties of harmonic beams can be studied. Predictions of the theories are shown to be in excellent agreement with full numerical simulations.
