Abstract:For characteristics of intermittent and loculose energy use in hot summer and cold winter zone, the software DeST was adopted for hourly dynamic simulation analysis for the summer cooling energy consumption of different interior and outer structure systems. Then the software Fluent was adopted for dy-namic simulation analysis by seconds for the enclosure structure’s surface temperature and heat flow within 10~14 days. The results show that the energy-saving rate is less than 5% in hot summer and cold winter zone when only outer wall is in exterior insulation, but if the outer and interior walls are all in the internal thermal insulation, the energy-saving rate will be greatly improved. Under the condition of unsteady, wall temperature fluctuation is far less than the outdoor environment temperature, and the range of maximum and minimum temperature is only 2~3℃, besides the range will be smaller only to 0.5 ℃or so if using ex-ternal thermal insulation. The air conditioning energy consumption differences with different retaining structures mainly reflected as the size of heat flux on the interior surface of the wall. Base on the intermit-tent and loculose energy use characteristics in hot summer and cold winter zone, the heat flux dissipated on interior wall are the main part.

Abstract:In hot summer and cold winter zone of China, the intermittent and compartmental heating method of air conditioning is widely adopted.The intermittent heating method makes the heat storage in walls become the main way for heat dissipation.The compartmental heating method results in a large amount of heat loss not only in exterior walls, but also in interior walls.Based on this heating method, a series of experiments were conducted in Shaoxing, a typical city in the hot summer and cold winter zone.The results showed that, internal insulating method for exterior wall could save more energy than external insulating method by reducing the wall heat storage amount.Besides, both the exterior walls and interior walls should be insulated as the heat loss in interior walls accounts for a large proportion of the total heating load and whether the adjacent room heating or not has little effect on reducing it.

Abstract:In some areas like south of China, energy is used in part time of the 24 hours and part space of the buildings, that is the characteristics of intermittent and loculose energy use. The energy consumption of the air conditioner can be calculated from the transient state with the help of numerical computing method. Among different wall configurations of self-insulation, internal insulation and external insulation walls, it shows that self-insulation and internal insulation walls performs better than external insulation walls in energy saving. The energy stored by walls which account for the most part of the energy consumption can be sharply reduced in the configurations of self-insulation, internal insulation walls.

Abstract:To discuss the energy saving effects of heat-reflective insulation coating on exterior envelope walls in the hot summer and cold winter zone, the experimental apparatus and the actual test rooms are built respectively, the heat flux data of east, south and west walls are analyzed by monitoring the wall temperature changes of two test rooms with and without the heat reflective insulation coating in Hangzhou in summer and winter. The experimental results indicate that the heat reflective insulation coating could reduce the exterior wall surface temperature effectively, and the maximum temperature change is about 8-10 degrees C. By calculating, it was found that the annual air-conditioning electricity saving with heat reflective insulation coating on exterior walls is about 5.8 kWh/(m(2) month), which shows that the energy saving effect of the heat insulation coating on the exterior wall is obvious in Hangzhou. Abstract:The characteristics of energy balance and heat transfer on building walls are important for building energy consumption and outdoor thermal/wind environment. The in-situ measurement of energy balance and wall flows during clear days on a 16-story building in Guangzhou, China is introduced and analyzed in this paper. The velocity along the wall was measured by 3D ultrasonic anemometers. The surface temperature was measured by infrared camera and thermal couples. The ambient temperature, relative humidity, wind velocity and solar radiation were recorded by weather stations. The Rayleigh number of wall flows reached as high as 1.44 × 10 14 . We found that the different kinds of heat flux reach their maximum value in a day cycle at different times. The transmittance of the atmosphere keeps decreasing from sunrise to sunset on Guangzhou’s typical clear days thus inducing different incoming solar radiation. The wall surface temperature and air flow were visualized by infrared videos. The diurnal change of energy balance on the south facing wall was calculated based on the solar radiation, long wave radiation and heat transfer caused by natural convection adjacent to the wall.

Abstract:Reflective and insulative composite coatings are a new energy-saving material with high solar reflectance and extremely low thermal conductivity for buildings. The optimization and impact of high solar reflectance and low thermal conductivity on the insulating capacity of walls remain uncertain. This work investigates the dynamic thermal performance and energy efficiency of a reflective and insulative composite coating in regions with hot summer and warm winter. A simplified thermal resistance-heat capacitance model of an exterior building wall is established to predict thermal performance. The dynamic temperature and heat flow of the wall are predicted to reduce heat loss through the interior surface of the wall and compared to the conventional coating. The specific impact of the thermal conductivity and solar reflectance of the coating on the heat loss is further investigated to minimize heat loss of the wall. This research shows that the composite coating shows better performance on adjusting outdoor climate change than the other coating. Compared with cement, it reduces the maximum temperature of the exterior surface of the wall by 7.45 °C, and the heat loss through the interior surface of the wall by 38%. The heat loss is reduced with the increase of solar reflectance and the reduction of thermal conductivity. The results can provide a useful reference and guidance for the application of reflective and insulative composite coating on building exterior wall to promote their energy-saving use on building envelopes.

Abstract:An effective analytical method for analyzing the transient thermal performance of building envelopes is very important to optimize their thermal performance design. However, the influence of thermal mass and insulation material distribution cannot be analyzed well by using the current steady state thermal resistance (i.e. R value) and thermal inertia index (i.e. D value). Moreover, the substitution effect between the thermal resistance R and the thermal capacitance C has not been theoretically studied before. A novel analytical approach based upon thermal impedance of evaluating the transient thermal performance of building envelopes is developed in this paper. By using that, the optimal material distribution (corresponding to the minimal space heating or cooling load due to building envelope heat loss or gain) can be analytically determined. In addition, the substitution relationship between R and C can be theoretically derived. The results show that putting concrete material in the middle and evenly distributing the insulating materials on the inside and outside surface can maximize the module of thermal impedance for given conditions. The proposed approach provides an effective way to theoretically optimize the transient thermal performance of building external wall. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Analysis of thermal characteristics and thermal storage performance of energy-saving phase change thermal storage materials in buildings

Abstract:In order to explore the thermal characteristics and thermal storage performance analysis of energy-saving phase change heat storage materials in buildings, taking the common exterior wall insulation composite wall structure in southwestern China as an example, the influence of insulation board structure thickness design on the total cost of residential air conditioning energy consumption and insulation board cost is studied, thus clarifying the concept and calculation origin of economic insulation thickness. The experimental results show that by drawing mathematical functions of energy consumption cost, total cost, and insulation material cost in the same 2-D coordinate, it is intuitively demonstrated that the minimization of total cost can be ensured when the insulation thickness is in an economic state, and the specific economic thickness can be accurately calculated through example data. Therefore, specific measures for improving external wall insulation from refined insulation structure design are proposed. It has been proven that the design of the exterior wall insulation layer structure is an important way to improve the overall energy-saving benefits of building exterior wall insulation.

Abstract:The author proposes a phase change heat storage component combined with the light wall interior to improve the heat storage performance. Numerical modelling of the composite wall was performed using the finite element program COMSOL connected to Multiphysics simulation, and its accuracy was verified. In order to optimize the use of phase change data and the benefit of phase change temperature, the phase change of the heating device was carried out, and the difference in the development efficiency of the thermal storage performance of the two types of light walls was obtained from the ribs in the thermal phase phase exchanger compared. The results show that the long and thin fins adjust the temperature and flow field changes of the paraffin to the corresponding fin gap and improve the heat transfer rate, 44.8 and 26.3, respectively, the aerated concrete combined wall heat storage and heat release time, added short ribs known need, and the connected wall delay time is not affected by external heat. The mature thermal insulation and thermal insulation time of the polystyrene board composite wall were shortened by 20.8 and 52.9, respectively. Ribs are able to improve heating efficiency and retain heat in the broken walls of polystyrene panels. The author?s research can provide a rationale for the design and use of phase change thermal storage.

Abstract:Optimizing the thermal storage of building components is crucial for improving indoor thermal conditions and reducing heating energy consumption. However, existing studies often overlook the effect of the substantial thermal mass in common building components, each storing different levels of heat. This study finds that considering this thermal mass and its energy during the building design phase can significantly save insulation material costs and heating energy consumption.Our work is built upon the analysis of the thermal behaviors of real buildings. We collected data from 43 representative rooms in cold regions and utilized Multiple Linear Regression models to examine how solar radiation and outdoor temperatures affect thermal mass in external walls, internal walls, and floors. We also used Probabilistic Density Distribution models to study heat transfer within these components. Subsequently, we applied Conduction Transfer Functions with just a 2.08% error rate to derive an optimal passive design strategy for year-round use of building thermal mass. Experimental results show that our strategy saves more energy by 0.78 kWh/m2 without increasing the insulation material cost, exceeding current standards. In cold regions, our study suggests focusing on mitigating the negative effects of building thermal mass, which offers greater energy savings than exploiting its positive aspects. Moreover, our findings can be easily integrated into the optimization of physical properties like thermal capacity and insulation for either improving stock buildings or designing new buildings, further enhancing their energy and material efficiency.
Exploring Buildings’ Secrets: the Ideal Thermophysical Properties of a Building’s Wall for Energy Conservation

Abstract:The thermophysical properties of external walls have an important effect on the energy consumption of buildings. In order to develop a theoretical method to optimize the thermophysical properties, the concepts of entransy and entransy dissipation are used in this paper to study the irreversibility and thereafter deduce the optimization objective of heat transfer in external walls. Furthermore, the corresponding optimization criteria, i.e., the ideal variation functions of thermophysical properties of external walls with temperatures, are obtained by the variational method. The results show that the optimization objective is the extremum of the sum of the entransy stored in external walls and the entransy dissipation during heat transfer from outdoor to indoor. The corresponding optimization criteria, i.e., the ideal heat capacity ρcp(T) of wall, is a δ function in summer or winter, while the ideal thermal conductivity k(T) of wall approaches a staircase function in summer and maintains the available minimal value in winter. Finally, the newly developed entransy dissipation-based optimization method is applied to optimize the thermophysical properties of a practical external wall to show its applications. This work can provide guidelines for the designers of building materials.

Abstract:Incorporating phase change materials (PCMs) into opaque ventilated walls is proposed to improve the indoor thermal environment of a passive solar heating building in the winter season. In this work, numerical simulations based on a comprehensive model considering various physical mechanisms are conducted, with the focus placed on the real-time indoor thermal response to the variation of ambient changes. Results show that the PCMs are able to reduce the fluctuations of the indoor temperature owing to the ability of thermal-damping, daytime heat storage and nighttime heat release. A variety of PCM thicknesses and partitioning configurations are examined, and both factors are proved to be critical in influencing the indoor thermal environment. Moderate partitioning numbers and PCM thickness should be chosen for designing this type of ventilated walls. For achieving a 24-hour stable and comfortable indoor temperature, an optimal choice of 8 in partitioning number and 3 cm in thickness should be adopted for the building investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, a parameter-based design approach for phase change wallboard is presented. Based on existing gypsum composite phase change materials, COMSOL simulation software was used to understand the influence of parameters including phase change temperature, wallboard thickness, thermal conductivity, and latent heat value on the thermal performance of phase change wallboard and analyze different indoor environments and energy-saving efficiency of various parameter schemes in practical application. The effect of those parameters for phase change wallboard that used in outer envelopes and inner partitions is also compared to determine an optimized scheme for phase change wallboard applied in the city of Xi'an. The results demonstrate the most important element that affects the inner surface temperature is the thickness of the phase change wallboard, then the phase change temperature, and last thermal conductivity. Using integrated PCM on the envelope is not only beneficial to adjust the indoor thermal environment and reduce energy consumption, but also help to achieve the best cooling and energy conservation effects by optimizing material parameters in practice. The phase transition temperature of PCM applied in walls should approach mean temperature. Furthermore, exterior walls need PCW with larger thickness and smaller thermal conductivity, and interior walls equip PCW with higher thermal conductivity and latent heat. The optimized scheme can reduce the average room maximum temperature by 1.24 °C and the cooling load by 953 W per square meter.

Abstract:The building wall is the main interface of the interior and exterior of the building and is the main channel for the exchange of heat between the interior and exterior of the building. Therefore, reducing the wall energy consumption is one of the main methods to reduce the energy consumption of the building, in the traditional building. In the energy-saving design of the envelope structure, the wall heat transfer coefficient is considered as a fixed value. The constant wall heat transfer coefficient is not conducive to the timely use of outdoor air heat dissipation or heating in buildings in areas with relatively poor daily temperatures. In order to make better use of the outdoor air and to reduce the energy consumption of buildings. This research presents a new type of wall in view of the properties that traditional building structure material's heat transfer coefficient is relatively stable, which the heat transfer coefficient changing with outdoor temperature. The characteristic of the heat transfer coefficient changing with temperature outdoor wall is the use of the natural cold/heat energy to adjust its heat transfer coefficient, at the same time it reduces indoor heating/cooling energy consumption and saves energy. This paper studies the principle and performance about regulating the heat transfer coefficient of the heat transfer coefficient changing with outdoor temperature wall and verifies the energy saving effect and automatic adjustment characteristic of the heat transfer coefficient by experimental analysis and theoretical calculation of this wall.
The roles of thermal insulation and heat storage in the energy performance of the wall materials: a simulation study

Abstract:A high-performance envelope is the prerequisite and foundation to a zero energy building. The thermal conductivity and volumetric heat capacity of a wall are two thermophysical properties that strongly influence the energy performance. Although many case studies have been performed, the results failed to give a big picture of the roles of these properties in the energy performance of an active building. In this work, a traversal study on the energy performance of a standard room with all potential wall materials was performed for the first time. It was revealed that both heat storage materials and insulation materials are suitable for external walls. However, the importances of those materials are distinct in different situations: the heat storage plays a primary role when the thermal conductivity of the material is relatively high, but the effect of the thermal insulation is dominant when the conductivity is relatively low. Regarding internal walls, they are less significant to the energy performance than the external ones, and they need exclusively the heat storage materials with a high thermal conductivity. These requirements for materials are consistent under various climate conditions. This study may provide a roadmap for the material scientists interested in developing high-performance wall materials.

Abstract:Based on the intermittent and compartmental energy consuming method of residential buildings in Hot Summer and Cold Winter Zone, a two-dimensional heat transfer model of one household flat is built for a transient study of the wall insulation effect on building energy efficiency. With the mode of compartmental energy consuming, the energy consumption of interior walls accounts for nearly 45% of the total amount, thus insulation for interior walls should be taken into more consideration as well as for exterior walls. With the intermittent energy consuming mode, exterior wall external insulation can decrease air-conditioner heating load. However, when cooling in summer nights, the temperature of wall is higher than both indoor and outdoor. External insulation hinders heat in walls from dissipating to outside, and thus there is an “anti-insulation” effect existing here. Interior insulation can effectively decrease both heating and cooling loads of air-conditioner.
Effect of Location and Distribution of Insulation Layers on the Dynamic Thermal Performance of Chinese Solar Greenhouse Walls

Abstract:Chinese solar greenhouses (CSG) are fully passive solar greenhouses. The dynamic thermal characteristics of 15 wall configurations with one or two insulation layers were investigated numerically during clear winter days for a typical CSG design using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. The total wall thickness of 0.6 m and the total insulation layer thickness of 0.12 m were kept constant for all cases. For the case of a single layer of insulation, the optimum wall design consisted of (from inside to outside): 0.12 m of brick, 0.12 m of insulation, and 0.36 m of brick. For the case of two layers of insulation, the optimum wall design consisted of (from the inside to the outside): 0.12 m of brick, 0.06 m of insulation, 0.36 m of brick, and 0.06 m of insulation. This study also showed that the wall configuration having the maximum time lag and the minimum decrement factor was similar to the configurations reported by other studies, but that the maximum time lag and the minimum decrement usually used to optimize the design of insulated building walls did not result in the optimum configuration of the insulation layers in Chinese solar greenhouse walls.

Abstract:It can provide theoretical support for the optimal design of low-energy walls by measuring the actual thermal conditions inside the walls of passive low-energy buildings and studying the rationality of the wall structure design. Taking the teaching and laboratory building of Shandong Jianzhu University as an example, this paper explores the method of using temperature and humidity sensor to measure the air temperature and humidity inside the wall to represent the solid temperature and humidity of the wall. Based on the measured data and calculation results, the rationality of the structure of the test external wall is analyzed from four aspects: the performance of insulation, the moisture drain performance of wall, the ability of preventing the penetration of the hot and humid air of the inner wall, and the waterproof performance of the outer wall. Results show that the external wall structure of polystyrene board (200 mm thick) for external insulation and thin plastering has good practical operation effect in three aspects of thermal insulation, internal moisture discharge, and external wall waterproof, which basically meets the design requirements of external wall of passive house in Germany. In terms of moisture protection of the inner wall, the inner wall of cement mortar (15 mm thick) may not be able to effectively prevent the infiltration of indoor hot and humid air. Thus, the insulation layer should be added into the external wall. In addition, the moisture inside the wall is obviously affected by the season. The drain performance of moisture inside the wall mainly occurs in the sweltering heat, and the drain direction is from the indoor side to the outdoor side. In the external insulation structure, there are two layers of graphite polystyrene plate (100 mm thick), and the insulation effect of polystyrene plate near the outdoor side is better than that near the indoor side. The combination of anticrack mortar (5 mm thick) and paint cannot completely prevent the infiltration of rainwater, but the infiltration of rainwater in the wall will be quickly discharged in a short time.

Abstract:Hydronic thermal barriers with ultra-low carbon emission attributes are progressively gaining prominence in the competition of thermal insulation solutions for opaque envelopes of low-energy buildings due to their excellent thermal performance and low-grade energy utilization potential. This paper introduces a novel approach involving a modular hydronic thermal barrier wall (MHTB) that incorporates preset pipe cavities and replaceable filling material. This proposition seeks to address the challenges confronted by conventional hydronic thermal barrier walls (CHTBs), specifically in terms of internal heat transfer enhancement and rapid assembly/dismantling. On-site thermal performance tests and energy-saving evaluations were conducted in summer conditions based on three scaled-down rooms with MHTB, CHTB and a conventional external insulation wall as the south walls. The results showed that the MHTB could significantly reduce heat passing through the south wall in summer, resulting in a decreased cooling load attributed to the wall and subsequently lowering indoor temperatures. At a charging temperature of 17.0 °C, the MHTB exhibited a reduction of 11.3 °C in interior surface temperature compared to the conventional external insulation wall, accompanied by a corresponding increase of 2.76 kWh·m −2 in cumulative heat flux. In addition, the MHTB could effectively mitigate inhomogeneous heat transfer within the wall, enhancing the overall heat transfer effect . Across the four investigated conditions, the MHTB with a steel grit-sand mixture as the filling material demonstrated an approximate 4.7% increase in cumulative heat flux and a 12.2% enhancement in cumulative cooling quantity compared to the CHTB. Overall, the findings substantiated the efficacy of the MHTB system and offered a crucial point of reference for advancing research in optimizing the performance and modular construction of hydronic thermal barrier walls.
