Abstract:AlF3-based fluoride glasses were developed. The glass systems AlF3-YF3-RF2, AlF3-YF3-ZrF4- RF2 (RF2-alkali earth fluoride) have been studied in detail. The relationship between physical properties and chemical composition have been established. The structure of AlF3- based fluoride glasses were studied by Raman and infrared spectroscopy and new structural model has been proposed.

Abstract:In this report, the complexes of sodium (potassium, cesium and lanthanide ions)and 4-methyl-benzenesulfonate were synthesized. Their FTIR spectra were studied. Compared with 4-methyl-benzenesulfonic acid, different IR spectra were observed for these complexes. The vs of sulfonate group shift to higher wavenumbers and vas of sulfonate split into several peaks. For the alkali metal complexes, the variation of the spectra reflect that the coordination structure of sulfonate group are different. The IR spectra of complexes of rare earth ions (Sm, Eu, Tb, Er, Y) and 4-methyl-benzenesulfonate were similar. These results showed that the coordination structure of sulfonate group were same. The studies of IR spectra of these complexes indicate that the water molecules in the complexes have obvious influence on the coordination structure of the sulfonate group.

Abstract:The crystal structure of lanthanum 4-amino-benzenesulfonate complex has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystal data indicate that lanthanum and neodymium 4-amino-benzenesulfonates are isomorphous. The FT-IR spectroscopic study of rare earth 4-amino-benzenesulfonate complexes showed that the spectra of light rare earth (La, Nd, Sm, Eu) complexes are similar and so are the spectra of heavy rare earth (Dy, Er, Y) complexes. There are remarkable differences between the spectra of light rare earth and heavy rare earth complexes. Based on above results, we infer that light rare earth (La, Nd, Sm, Eu) complexes are isomorphous and three heavy rare earth (Dy, Er, Y) complexes are of a different structure but also isomorphous.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculation is carried out to investigate the structures, (19)F and (27)Al NMR chemical shifts of aqueous Al-F complexes and their water-exchange reactions. The following investigations are performed in this paper: (1) the microscopic properties of typical aqueous Al-F complexes are obtained at the level of B3LYP/6-311+G**. Al-OH(2) bond lengths increase with F(-) replacing inner-sphere H(2)O progressively, indicating labilizing effect of F(-) ligand. The Al-OH(2) distance trans to fluoride is longer than other Al-OH(2) distance, accounting for trans effect of F(-) ligand. (19)F and (27)Al NMR chemical shifts are calculated using GIAO method at the HF/6-311+G** level relative to F(H(2)O)(6)(-) and Al(H(2)O)(6)(3+) references, respectively. The results are consistent with available experimental values; (2) the dissociative (D) activated mechanism is observed by modeling water-exchange reaction for [Al(H(2)O)(6-i)F(i)]((3-i)+) (i = 1-4). The activation energy barriers are found to decrease with increasing F(-) substitution, which is in line with experimental rate constants (k(ex)). The log k(ex) of AlF(3)(H(2)O)(3)(0) and AlF(4)(H(2)O)(2)(-) are predicted by three ways. The results indicate that the correlation between log k(ex) and Al-O bond length as well as the given transmission coefficient allows experimental rate constants to be predicted, whereas the correlation between log k(ex) and activation free energy is poor; (3) the environmental significance of this work is elucidated by the extension toward three fields, that is, polyaluminum system, monomer Al-organic system and other metal ions system with high charge-to-radius ratio.

Abstract:NaF, KF, RbF and CsF have been adsorbed onto alumina and the resulting reagents have been analysed by IR and 19F magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy. The results show that MF reacts with the alumina surface to form AlF63−, and CO32− is formed as a byproduct due to the adsorption and reaction of atmospheric CO2.

Abstract:Solutions of alkali metal fluorides in aliphatic diols or carboxylic acids have been investigated by 19F n.m.r. at concentrations of ca. 0.5 mol kg–1 and greater. Heats of association of potassium fluoride with ethane-1,2-diol and methanoic acid are obtained from variable-temperature n.m.r. studies. The nature of the strong hydrogen bond and its influence on the n.m.r. spectra are discussed.

Abstract:The quantitative distribution of different types of clusters in a binary NaF-AlF 3 molten salt system with a series of cryolite ratios (CR, NaF/AlF 3 molar ratio) was explored by in situ high-temperature Raman spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemistry (QC) ab initio calculations. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to simulate the Raman spectra of solid crystalline Na 5 Al 3 F 14 (CR = 1.67) and Na 3 AlF 6 (CR = 3.00). Aluminum-fluorine molecular model clusters containing species with typical characteristic microstructures were built in a molten NaF-AlF 3 system. Deconvolution of the major stretching vibrational bands of Al-F-Al and Al-F bonds was carried out by using the Voigt function. The anionic fractions of different species present in the molten NaF-AlF 3 system were quantitatively analyzed by a function of the microstructure dependent on Raman scattering cross sections (RSCS). AlF 6 3- , AlF 5 2- , and AlF 4 - were the dominant species in the aluminum-fluorine molten salt system. As the NaF in the melt increased, the content of AlF 5 2- reached the maximum concentration when CR = 2.00. Apart from the recognized existence of both AlF 4 - and AlF 6 3- , the aluminum bridging fluorine species of Al 2 F 7 - has been proven to exist in molten systems when CR ≤ 1.00. The relationship between the viscosity and various (n-3)Na + ·AlF n (n-3)- species distributions has been investigated. The results showed that the contribution of different (n-3)Na + ·AlF n (n-3)- to viscosity was essentially the same, and simply depended on the number of different species.

Abstract:Two CF2O⋯IF complexes have been found during laser photolysis of CF3I/O2 in Ar and Xe matrices. The geometries and fundamental vibrational frequencies of two complexes CF2O⋯IF (A) and CF2⋯IF(B) have been determined by ab initio calculations at MP2 level with the LANL2DZ basis set. The calculated potential energies indicate that the complex(B) is more stable than the complex(A) by 23kJ/mol. The frequencies and stability are in agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:A series of glasses with compositions (50 − x)AlF3xYF3MeF2 (Me = Ca + Mg + Sr + Ba; x = 0, 10, 15, 20 and 30) have been prepared. Raman and infrared spectra of these glasses have also been measured. In the Raman spectrum of 50AlF350MeF2 glass there were two main bands at 530 cm−1 and 614 cm−1, which were assigned as the vibration of [AlF6]3− and [AlF4]− groups, respectively. As the AlF3 content was reduced, the intensity of the band at 530 cm−1 increased and that of the 614 cm−1 band decreased, while the positions of bands moved to higher frequency. This indicated that the [AlF4]− tetrahedra almost disappeared in the glass structure. In addition, new bands occurred in the Raman spectra at about 272 cm−1, 368 cm−1 and 440 cm−1 when part of the AlF3 in the glass compositions was replaced by YF3. With increasing YF3 content, the intensities of these peaks strengthened and a peak at about 350 cm−1 in the infrared (IR) spectra also strengthened. Almost all of the glasses had two main IR absorption bands at 350 cm−1 and 640 cm−1. Comparing these results with the spectrum of crystalline YF3, it was concluded that these bands correspond to the vibration of yttrium-containing polyhedra and that the Y atoms are present in 8-coordination in the glass structure. In conclusion, AlF3YF3MeF2 glasses are proposed to consist of [AlF6]3−, [AlF4]− and 8-coordinated yttrium atoms [YF8] with the [AlF4]− groups being replaced by [YF8] groups as YF3 is substituted for AlF3.

Abstract:Free electron laser has been developed as tunable lasers over a wide range of wavelengths. Devices irradiating in the region of 6–16μm (1666–625cm−1) are operable in the Beijing free electron lasers facilities (BFEL). For understanding the interactions between FEL and biological tissues, in this study wavelength-selective infrared-induced structure changes of substances under irradiation by FEL were measured using FT-IR spectroscopy. The carboxyl acids and carboxylates samples investigated include salicylic acid, sulfosalicylic acid, cholic acid, deoxycholic acid, sodium cholate and sodium deoxycholate. The changes of the FT-IR spectra of the molecules prove that the spectral variations of the samples induced by FEL are closely related to their hydrogen bond networks.

Abstract:Ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations, using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method with the generalized gradient approximation and Hubbard-U term were used to investigate the structural properties, whereas Tm-mBj used for electronic, optical thermodynamic properties of Al-based fluoroperovskite compounds AlMF 3 (M = Ca and Cd). With a careful investigation of the contribution from various bands, using total and partial density of state curves, electronic band structure analysis, identified AlCaF 3 and AlCdF 3 as direct band gap materials. Calculations of optical spectra spanning from 0 to 40 eV were done, including real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function, optical reflectivity, absorption coefficient, optical conductivity, refractive index, and extinction coefficients. In the present work, thermodynamic properties are also investigated by using Gibbs package integrated in quasi harmonic. Because of their unique optical properties, the materials are suggested to have potential applications in optoelectronic devices

The discrete ALF fluoroaluminate anion in the structure of

Abstract:: The first crystallographically defined example of the discrete AlF 52− fluoroaluminate anion was elucidated via X-ray analysis of [Et 4 N] 2 [AlF 5 ](H 2 O) 2 (Et 4 N + = tetraethylammonium) single crystals. Intentional preparation of a compound containing the Al 2 F 93− anion via the reaction of two equivalents of [Et 4 N][AlF 4 ] with [Me 4 N]F (Me 4 N + = tetramethylammonium) resulted in the formation of [Et 4 N][Me 4 N][AlF 5 ] with unreacted [Et 4 N][AlF 4 ]. Cation exchange between these species in the presence of water furnished [Et 4 N] 2 [AlF 5 ](H 2 O) 2 as a precipitate containing the trigonal bipyramidal AlF 52− anion. The data from the present study allows supplementing the ligand close packing (LCP) model for the 3rd period of the periodic table. The Raman spectrum of [Et 4 N] 2 [AlF 5 ](H 2 O) 2 was analyzed on the basis of quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract:In the present investigation, four rare earth oxalates with different electronic structure [f 0(La, Y),f 7(Gd) andf 14(Lu)] were prepared. Their Fourier transform far- and mid-infrared spectra were examined with a Nicolet 7199 B spectrometer in a range from 100–4000 cm−1. Normal vibrational analysis of La, Gd, Lu and Y oxalate hydrates were carried out according to the FT-IR results. The assignment of vibrational frequencies is made on the basis of normal coordinate analysis. The average deviations of 30 frequencies of the four oxalates between the calculated and the experimental values are La=4.49, Gd=4.04, Lu=4.63 and Y=4.98 cm−1, respectively.

Abstract:The aim of this paper was to examine the calcium-cholate-phosphate tenary complexes by FTIR spectroscopy. The results indicated that the mole ratio of cholate to phosphate were 1:3 and 1:4 in ternary complexes respectively when the initial mole ratio of cholate to phosphate were 3:1 and 1.5:1 in reaction. The FTIR spectroscopic results demonstrated that in the ternary complexes Ca2+ was coordinated with O in both COO- and PO(4)3- groups.
The basic intermediate-range order structures in the FLiNaK–LaF3–Li2O melt: identification and characterisation

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the structure of FLiNaK–LaF 3 melt with small addition of Li 2 O through the theoretical approach combining ab initio molecular dynamics and simulation of the isolated structural units. The structure of the melt was studied in detail by calculation of radial distribution functions along with coordination numbers and radii. We found that oxyfluoride intermediate-range structure is formed in the melt. Our observations support the suggestions of other authors on formation of intermediate-range structures in fluoride melts containing metal oxides. Given structure shows long lifetime, the consideration of the isolated specie is valuable. We performed a simulation of 'gas-phase' [O 2 La 4 F n ] structure in order to calculate its Raman spectrum. It was found that the spectrum of the isolated structure agree in semi-quantitative manner with the vibrational density of states of the oxygen ions in the melt.

Abstract:To help address the need for predicting radiative heat transfer (RHT) behavior of molten salts, we conducted a comprehensive review of methods and data from infrared optical spectroscopic measurements on molten fluoride salts. Transmittance, reflectance, and trans-reflectance experimental methods are discussed, along with the corresponding data reduction methodology and the limitations of each technique. Optical spectroscopy is a convenient indirect probe for changes in structural parameters with temperature and composition. Electronic and vibrational absorption data for transition-metal, lanthanide, and actinide solutes and vibrational absorption data for alkali and alkaline earth fluoride solvents are compiled, and the corresponding structural interpretation is discussed and compared with other experimental and theoretical work. We find that solvent and solute vibrational absorption can be significant in the mid-infrared, resulting in near-infrared edges of significance to RHT. Extrapolation and averaging of existing edge data leads to estimated gray absorption coefficient values at 700 ˚C of 546 m-1 for FLiBe and 276 m-1 for FLiNaK, both within the range of 1 – 6000 m-1 identified to be of engineering relevance for radiative heat transfer analysis.

Abstract:FT-IR spectra of the mixtures of praseodymium chloride and glucose in glassy state were investigated. From the changes of relative intensity and shifts of the characteristic frequency of glucose and water, it is concluded that the coordinated water molecules of the praseodymium ions are partially substituted by glucose through O-H groups which coordinated with praseodymium ions to form chelate ions.

Abstract:Abstract [M 6 F] 5+ clusters were chosen to calculate the 19 F NMR chemical shielding for solid state alkali-metal fluorides MF (M=Li, Na, K, Rb) using gauge-independent atomic orbitals (GIAO) at Hartree–Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT) levels, respectively. The results agree with those measured experimentally, in particular when the relative deviations within the same series are considered. Our results reveal that the variation of chemical shielding from LiF to RbF correlates well with a combined effect from the lattice factor R −2 and the valency factor Q + Q − .
