Abstract:A series of glasses with compositions (50 − x)AlF3xYF3MeF2 (Me = Ca + Mg + Sr + Ba; x = 0, 10, 15, 20 and 30) have been prepared. Raman and infrared spectra of these glasses have also been measured. In the Raman spectrum of 50AlF350MeF2 glass there were two main bands at 530 cm−1 and 614 cm−1, which were assigned as the vibration of [AlF6]3− and [AlF4]− groups, respectively. As the AlF3 content was reduced, the intensity of the band at 530 cm−1 increased and that of the 614 cm−1 band decreased, while the positions of bands moved to higher frequency. This indicated that the [AlF4]− tetrahedra almost disappeared in the glass structure. In addition, new bands occurred in the Raman spectra at about 272 cm−1, 368 cm−1 and 440 cm−1 when part of the AlF3 in the glass compositions was replaced by YF3. With increasing YF3 content, the intensities of these peaks strengthened and a peak at about 350 cm−1 in the infrared (IR) spectra also strengthened. Almost all of the glasses had two main IR absorption bands at 350 cm−1 and 640 cm−1. Comparing these results with the spectrum of crystalline YF3, it was concluded that these bands correspond to the vibration of yttrium-containing polyhedra and that the Y atoms are present in 8-coordination in the glass structure. In conclusion, AlF3YF3MeF2 glasses are proposed to consist of [AlF6]3−, [AlF4]− and 8-coordinated yttrium atoms [YF8] with the [AlF4]− groups being replaced by [YF8] groups as YF3 is substituted for AlF3.
